Welcome

MARY VALLENTINE AOCEO, Melbourne Recital Centre

Welcome to the new edition of What’s On at Melbourne Recital Centre. This spring, discover the power of music performed in the Centre’s two sublime spaces by brilliant Australian and international artists. In October, the Melbourne Festival brings legendary guitarist John McLaughlin and visionary film composer Clint Mansell to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, in addition to celebrating the art of the string quartet with the London Haydn Quartet and the stylish Modigliani Quartet from France. The Centre’s Local Heroes present Melbourne’s most diverse array of classical concerts in our perfectly-sized Salon. These early evening concerts are a great place to discover something new or enjoy your favourite chamber music; an affordable luxury with tickets from $38 to $50. If pop is your thing, relive the best moments of My Friend the Chocolate Cake’s catalogue, or experience magical sounds of Hauschka’s prepared piano and audio-visual spectacular Lumière II by electronic artist Robert Henke. In November, classical music’s rock-star organist Cameron Carpenter will lift the roof on Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. The fabulous young musician has been storming concert halls around the world, and ours is next. I hope you’ll join us for this and much more soon.

More bouquets for Les Arts FlorissantsIn July, Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, who performed at Melbourne Recital Centre to great acclaim in March 2015, were honoured with two prestigious Helpmann Awards – the Australian performing arts industry’s ‘Oscars’. Les Arts Florissants and Le Jardin des Voix – Un jardin à l’italienne won the Helpmann for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Concert, and William Christie, the conductor and musical director of Les Arts Florissants, won the award for Best Individual Musical Performance. This takes the total number of Helpmanns won by the Centre’s presentations and artists to five. Other Melbourne Recital Centre artists nominated in the 2015 Helpmann Awards were violinist Christian Tetzlaff and choral ensemble The Sixteen.

Extraordinary young pianist, Simon Tedeschi performs one of the greatest works in the keyboard literature, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. In this all-Russian program, Tedeschi also performs Tchaikovsky's delightful and innocent Album for the Young, and Prokofiev's altogether darker Visions Fugitives. Celebrating the launch of his highly anticipated new recording for ABC Classics, Tedeschi brings his own magic to these works in an unforgettable evening of sweeping, Russian Romantic music. Simon is one of Australia’s most renowned and sought-after pianists, performing throughout Europe, North America and Asia, including at Carnegie Hall. Winner of many prestigious prizes in Australia and overseas, he has performed for world leaders such as the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark, Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama.

The gift of music can be a most profound gesture. Haydn and Beethoven honoured the special people in their lives with some of their most beautiful music. Beethoven’s noble masterpiece was dedicated to a dear friend and student Archduke Rudolph of Austria, while Haydn wrote passionately for his English lover, Rebecca Schroeter. Centuries later, we all are the beneficiaries. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Benaud Trio and as such their concerts look nostalgically to some favourite pieces but also enthusiastically into the future with new music from composers with whom the Trio feels a special connection.

His eerie, expansive scores layer dozens of movies – including all of Darren Aronofsky’s projects, from Pi and Requiem for a Dream to The Fountain, Black Swan and Noah. Joyous MasterworksThis joyous program shows that great art need not always be serious. Three sunny creations usher out winter and welcome spring with their joyous melodies and bouncy rhythms. J.S. Bach’s celebrated Brandenburg Concerto No.3 is a triumph of virtuoso string writing. Its kaleidoscopic array of ever-changing textures beautifully demonstrates the lighter side of Bach’s genius. Mozart’s famous Horn Concerto No.4 in E-flat features some of the composer’s most celebrated and playful melodies bringing the horn’s bucolic hunting ancestry to the fore in the work’s high spirited finale. Composed in 1812, Beethoven’s Symphony No.8 shows a rare moment of cheerfulness in the troubled composer’s otherwise stormy output. Referred to by Beethoven himself as ‘my little Symphony in F’, its string of musical jokes and unexpected surprises leads to a good humoured finale.

One of Melbourne’s favourite pianists, Hoang Pham, joins Flinders Quartet to open the concert with the sublime Schumann piano quintet. Complementing Schumann’s impassioned piece is Beethoven’s youthful String Quartet, Op.18, No.6, a quartet so incredibly inventive that it has the artists forever on their toes. In between these two chamber music masterpieces will be a new work by Tom Henry, winner of the 2013 Melbourne Recital Centre composition prize. Since 2000 Flinders Quartet has performed with some of the country’s greatest musicians, toured nationally and internationally, and commissioned numerous Australian works for string quartet. Fifteen years on, the Quartet is thrilled to continue its journey with performances that showcase their passion for playing the greatest music written for the string quartet.

Young virtuosi, Ji Won Kim (violin) and Young Kwon Choi (piano), winners of the 2009 and 2012 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer Awards, represent the next generation of ‘global musical talent’. It is also a perfect partner for Pēteris Vasks’ glowing Fantasia for violin and strings. Vasks wrote Vox Amoris for the unique sound of Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2008, and over the last seven years the Orchestra has taken its mesmerising sound around the world. Now the ACO brings Vox Amoris home. Put Tchaikovsky and Vasks together with the classical invention of CPE Bach and you are hearing the essence of the ACO’s sound: direct, intense, truthful. An exciting addition to the program is Britten's exquisite song cycle and poems by Arthur Rimbaud Les Illuminations, featuring leading Australian soprano Taryn Fiebig.

Something… UnexpectedTrio Anima Mundi’s final concert at the Centre for the year is Something… Unexpected. The doubt expressed by Beethoven’s teacher Joseph Haydn as to whether the Op.1, No.3 piano trio should be published, wary that audiences may not appreciate or understand Beethoven’s bold voice, highlights the new and ‘unexpected’ nature of this work. The introduction of a mystery work – chosen by Trio Anima Mundi’s subscribers earlier this year – continues the overall theme. This concert also presents the world premiere performance of the winning work from the Trio Anima Mundi International Composition Prize.

Fantasies & RondosMozart’s rondo ‘Alla turca’ and Beethoven’s 'Moonlight' sonata are among the favourite works to be presented in this enlightening program of classical treasures. Melbourne pianist Julie Haskell will shed light on the concepts of improvisation and fantasies in the Classical era by performing these contrasting works on the Centre’s forte-piano. By showcasing well-known sonata movements by Mozart and Beethoven, the audience will be introduced to the excitement of Turkish Janissary music (all the rage in 18th-century Vienna), with its full, percussive effects and to the mysterious musical moods captured by the use of the early ‘una corda’, or soft pedal.

To end its 30th-anniversary year, the Australian String Quartet brings life to Schubert’s masterpiece for string quartet, Death & the Maiden. Considered one of the benchmark works of the string quartet repertoire, this piece was written when the composer was facing his own mortality following serious illness. The work ends with a frenzied rush to the finish line, almost triumphant, thus ending an epic journey filled with heartache, hope and acceptance. Brett Dean’s And once I played Ophelia for soprano and string quartet is full of drama, lament and Dean’s characteristic rhythmic drive and punch. Australian soprano Allison Bell joins the Quartet for this exciting and visceral work. Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga was known as the ‘Spanish Mozart’ and his rarely heard, wonderful third quartet opens the program. Written when the composer was only 16,

Eggner TrioThere is a special connectedness that lights up the stage when the Eggner brothers perform. The almost telepathic power of any good chamber ensemble is, with them, magically enhanced by lifelong familiarity. Christoph, Georg and Florian Eggner make a welcome return, sharing their joy in music full of warmth and passion.

Their programs draw listeners into the emotional intensity of the 19th century, seen through the lens of Johannes Brahms and his friends Robert and Clara Schumann. The melodiousness and technical assurance of Clara’s Trio was praised by Mendelssohn – and may have inspired her husband Robert to try his hand at the same extended form. His third Trio was admired by Clara as ‘unique, and full of passion.’ Brahms’ youthful Trio Op.8 was quickly taken up by both amateur and professional performers drawn to its nobility (and gorgeous tunes) and no doubt was well-known to Dvořák, whose irresistible ‘Dumky’ is a perfect fit for the Eggners.

Music from wartime Melbourne by Dulcie Holland, created in 1944 when war had cut short her London studies, offers a fascinating musical and societal contrast and parallel. Her extensive career as an award-winning composer is sometimes overshadowed by her educational work – but this Trio is rightly described as a gem of Australian music, crammed with inventiveness, and richly satisfying.

A Musical Portrait – music from the court of Charles IWhile King Charles I was not a very successful ruler, he did institute the post Master of the King’s Music; a position which still survives today. Lutenist, composer, singer and painter Nicholas Lanier was the first to hold the post. His art-collecting missions to Italy were a great influence, and he brought a new style of monody to England. HAUSCHKA

‘GERMAN COMPOSER MAKES ASTONISHING

SOUNDS SIMPLY BY MODIFYING THE INTERNAL WORKINGS OF HIS PIANO, TO HAUNTING RESULTS.’

THE STAR MUSIC TORONTO

Master of the prepared piano, Volker Bertelmann – better known as Hauschka – embodies a story of vast musical influences. His music inspires comparisons with Eric Satie, John Cage and Steve Reich. Volker Bertelmann devoted himself to nine years of classical training and yet, from a young age, his musical mind wandered to new possibilities for the piano. By the age of 18, Bertelmann had already composed his first film score and in the 90s he was rapping and playing keyboards with God’s Favourite Dog – a major hip hop act.

A dalliance with electronica spurred on a fascination to strip back anything that he considered redundant within his compositions. Soon he tried to create the same effect with no electricity whatsoever. Enter the ‘prepared’ piano which involves placing foreign material within a piano (think super-magnets, art erasers, rubber tubing, ping-pong balls, duct tape, aluminium foil, leather straps and marbles). Hauschka’s unusually broad church of influences makes sense when you listen to his music closely, the sound is both instinctive and fuelled by a love of

rhythm. He is a musician who knows his instrument – quite literally – inside out, and he’s unafraid of approaching it with a fresh sensibility.

How do you describe Cameron Carpenter? Musical genius? Mad inventor? Rockstar? Whatever you call him, his fans are in agreement: this is an artist who combines intelligence, showmanship and virtuosity with a determination to smash the pious stereotype of the classical pipe organ.

Born in North Carolina and trained at the Juilliard School, Carpenter has been breaking rules and wowing audiences since his debut world tour in 2006. Until 2014, his performances have necessarily been at venues with their own organ (including a sell-out recital playing the Grand Organ at Melbourne Town Hall in 2012). All that changed this year, when Carpenter unveiled his International Touring Organ, a purpose-built digital organ created by Massachusetts-based organ builders Marshall & Ogletree. The instrument, which fits on a large truck and takes three hours to assemble, consists of a console (with five keyboards and one set of foot pedals) and a bank of speakers through which Carpenter orchestrates sounds sampled from organs from around the world, from cathedrals to Wurlitzers. And how does it sound? ‘Terrific’, says New York Times music critic, Anthony Tommasini, who witnessed its debut at the Lincoln Center earlier this year.

Cameron Carpenter is now touring the world with his new creation. Hear this extravagantly talented renegade play music from Bach to Bernstein and beyond in a recital that will be challenging, immersive and unforgettable.

Sound is vision is sound, treated as one absolute unity.

‘IT WAS A FULL-BODY EXPERIENCE, WITH PIERCINGLY BRIGHT LASERS DANCING ON A SCREEN AND CHEST-VIBRATING SUB-BASS PERFECTLY PAIRED

WITH THE VISUALS.’ NOW TORONTO

Robert Henke is a German sound artist who builds and operates machines that create sounds, shapes and structures. He is also responsible for ground-breaking techno productions under the Monolake moniker, which epitomises the 'Berlin' sound. In his new project, Lumière II, Henke teaches lasers to dance. Powerful lasers draw rapid successions of morphing shapes and connected points in space, precisely synched with carefully crafted sonic events to create a situation of total audio-visual synesthesia. Perfect geometric figures are contrasted with floating organic structures, the archaic sign language of an alien culture communicating via traces of light. Massive and overwhelming at times, fragile and delicate at others, Lumière II explores the limits of what can be done with lasers, pushing the medium to the extreme and playing with its very own

properties to create previously unseen images of excessive brightness or near complete darkness, pure white or colors impossible to achieve with video, shapes and movements between boldness and complex elegance. The constantly refined software written by Henke himself makes it possible to compose in a process that always links sound and vision. Lumière II is a performance where concert and visual arts meet and is the second iteration of a long term exploration of a commonly underrated medium. The Sutherland Trio – Elizabeth Sellars (violin), Molly Kadarauch (cello) and Caroline Almonte (piano) – performs classics of the chamber repertoire and celebrates exciting new directions in composition. The Trio trace family footprints during World War I paying homage to previous generations with music from worlds old and new. In America, Charles Ives was creating new musical worlds, as he combined European traditions with the everyday sounds and folk songs of America – a nation soon to be drawn into the war.

Celebrating their 10th-anniversary season, Sydney-based Omega Ensemble makes its Melbourne debut with two of the best loved pieces for clarinet, viola and piano. One of the last works from the pen of Robert Schumann, Märchenerzählungen (Fairy Tales) combines an elfin light-heartedness with an agitated tinge of melancholy. Jean Françaix’s Trio is a tour de force of neoclassical refinement and ebullient wit, whilst Bruch's lyrical and deeply romantic Eight Pieces explores the uniquely rich and mellow timbres of the clarinet and viola.

Sparkling serenades, swoon-worthy nocturnes, moonlit street parties – let the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra Virtuosi carry you away into the emotional world of the night. The program features stunning Tchaikovsky andantes for cello and strings, performed by soloist Michael Dahlenburg; Boccherini’s evocative homage to street music in 18th-century Madrid; and the most famous night-music ever written, Mozart’s joyous Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

Divertimento, Béla Bartók’s dark take on the Baroque, kick-starts this night of European festivities with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Brahms’ Violin Concerto delivers a fiery, gypsy-inspired rondo, while Tchaikovsky’s homage to the serenades of Mozart thrills with its breathtaking, resonant strings and Russian-influenced themes.

Four well known Melbourne musicians deeply immersed in the music traditions of Indonesia, India, Japan and Europe come together to write and perform as Fine Blue Thread. They create music which is exquisite, intimate and uniquely Australian. With subtly poetic lyrics telling stories of characters journeying through our region, Helen Mountfort (cello), Ria Soemardjo (vocals) and Sam Evans (tabla) with special guest Anne Norman (shakuhachi), perform sweet, moody and surprising music.

Piano Masterpieces – Janine Sowden

Described by The Times (UK) as having ‘a delicate mixture of poetry with virtuosity’, pianist Janine Sowden’s international career has seen her record and perform in many of the world’s great concert venues. Surveying some of the greatest masterpieces of the piano literature, this program highlights the range and versatility of her pianistic technique; from Beethoven’s improvisatory Piano Sonata in E-flat, Op.27, No.1, through the moonlit eroticism of Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, to the brutal, mechanistic angularity of Prokofiev’s Toccata. Two of Percy Grainger’s highly characteristic transcriptions bring a local flavour to the program; the rhapsodically lush ‘Ramble’ on the Love Duet from Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier is a tour de force of pianistic virtuosity whilst the dreamily bucolic ‘Pastoral’ from In a Nutshell highlights the unique originality of Grainger’s piano writing.

Corpus Medicorum’s final concert for 2015 opens with a world premiere by highly talented guest artist Stefan Cassomenos. Sinfonietta has been commissioned especially for Corpus Medicorum and will be followed by the dazzling Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.1 with Stefan as soloist. The ever-popular Beethoven Symphony No.5 ends the program and a highly successful year for Corpus Medicorum music-making.

Juxtaposing works by British and Australian World War I composers with Brahms’ final piano quartet masterpiece, the Australia Piano Quartet returns for an evening of passionate performance celebrating the piano quartet. Septimus Kelly’s Fragment for piano quartet premiered at the 2014 Canberra International Music Festival, reconstructed from wartime sketches taken from the composer’s diary. An accomplished pianist, Kelly performed a Brahms Piano Quartet at the Aeolian Hall in London in 1913 but was tragically killed in action during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. This is music that is impossible to categorise: strange but accessible, abstracted but also melodic. This is music that exists in the meeting point between folk-pop and nu-jazz/improv/sound art. Daughter’s Fever is a collaborative project co-led by singer/songwriter Paddy Mann of legendary Melbourne alt-folk group, Grand Salvo, and progressive composer, sound artist, trumpeter Peter Knight (artistic director of the Australian Art Orchestra). Featuring leading experimental/new jazz musicians: Erik Griswold on prepared piano and toy piano, Vanessa Tomlinson on percussion, Rosiland Hall on saxophone and Joe Talia on drums/Revox B77. This performance coincides with the launch of the album Daughter’s Fever.

Following the resounding influence of McAll's project Graft, dream dual-piano partners Andrea Keller and Barney McAll are back together to explore their favourite Australian jazz musicians and some original compositions.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s critically-acclaimed 2015 Season highlight concert returns to Melbourne for one night only. Experience Richard Tognetti’s unique exploration of musical connections between East and West, as he pairs Vivaldi’s Baroque masterpiece with original compositions by ARIA Award-winning oud virtuoso, Joseph Tawadros.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has undergone many reincarnations since it was first played by the talented orphans of the Ospedale della Pietà in 18th-century Venice. Now, Richard Tognetti and Joseph Tawadros bring their own blend of musical alchemy to this program, reminding us that Venice is barely a day’s sail from Cairo.

‘We all like figgy pudding,’ asserts the old carol, and most of us do. Rich, intriguing, sweet-but-not-too-sweet and long in the preparation, there is something very special – and satisfying – about Christmas pudding. The boys of the Australian Boys Choir and the men of The Vocal Consort invite you to share just such a special experience to celebrate Christmas in 2015. William Mathias’ Salvator Mundi is the featured major work.

The SnowmanThe Snowman is an enchanting Christmas story for children of all ages. This family friendly Christmas concert, an annual Melbourne Recital Centre tradition, includes a live orchestra along with a screening of the animated film The Snowman. One morning James wakes to see his backyard covered in a thick blanket of snow. Overjoyed, he sets about building a snowman. That night, unable to sleep, he gets up to check on his creation. There’s magic in the air as he opens the back door and James can’t believe his eyes, the snowman has come to life!

Join this Grand Tour through Europe with three of the greatest composers. Beethoven’s gruff and dramatic overture to Goethe’s Egmont, is a concentrated expression of the Dutch hero’s triumph sacrifice in the name of liberty and freedom from the Spanish. Mozart’s youthful Piano Concerto No.12, K.414 is a miracle of the Austrian genius’ maturity beyond his years. Although premiered in London in 1833, Mendelssohn’s Italian symphony was first conceived during a –tour the young composer took through the major capital cities of Italy. He wrote to his sister that ‘it will be the happiest piece I have ever written, especially the last movement’ and certainly a feeling of joyous energy dominates the symphony, which throbs with Italian dance rhythms, from the Roman saltarello to the frenzied Neapolitan tarantella.
