Dorridge Primary School was formed inSeptember 2014, when the well-establishedNursery & Infant and Junior schools amalgamated. The school is a community school situatedon an attractive and spacious site near thecentre of Dorridge village.

The school buildings are situated on a largesite comprising Nursery and Key Stage 1buildings and a few steps away the KeyStage 2 building. Darby’s (wraparound provision) is a new purpose built spaceadjoining the Key Stage 2 building.Classrooms are modern and well-equippedand both buildings have a large hall. Each building also has an IT suite with modern equipment and a well-resourcedlibrary. At Key Stage 2 there is also a newArts facility used for Music, drama and infuture for Cookery.

We are lucky to have extensive grounds surrounding both buildings. Outside spacesat Key Stage 2 include a large playing field,a Trim Trail, a conservation area, provisionfor Forest School, a large playground and aquiet area. At Key Stage 1 children benefitfrom a ‘soft’ surfaced playground, anadventure playground, a field surroundedby a track for bikes and trikes, an allotmentand outdoor learning spaces attached toeach year group.

We are a three-form entry school with 3 classesin each Year Group. In Nursery there are 2 sessions – morning andafternoon – with a maximum of 40 in each session.From Year 2 to Year 6, children are put into Setsfor English and Mathematics which are taught inthe mornings. Other subjects are taught in theafternoons when children are classes.

PARENTSIN PARTNERSHIP

COMMUNICATIONWe communicate with parents and carers ina variety of ways, for example through ourtermly and weekly newsletter, questionnaires, workshops and informalsocial events. Parents are invited to Parents’Evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms todiscuss progress and next steps. In the Summer term, parents are invited to aWalkabout when they can talk to the classteacher as well as meet the teacher for thenext year. Staff are always happy to meetwith parents to discuss any concerns.Appointments can be made via the schooloffice.Every year parents are invited to attend anOpen Morning, termly Walkabouts, SportsAfternoons, children’s performances andspecial assemblies.The School has a Home School Agreementto support the partnership between homeand school, and foster shared dialogue. This agreement is signed by children andparents at the beginning of each year.All children from Reception to Year 6 have aHome School Organiser. The use of thisbook aids communication, as well as providing a place to record Reading athome and homework.

The School’s revamped website has a wealthof information including the newsletters,Year group pages and copies of key policies.Most letters are sent via email, apart fromletters that require a response. Letters willalso be put on the website for reference.

HELPING IN SCHOOLParents’ support and expertise can be usedin many ways and is greatly valued andappreciated. Other family members such asGrandparents are also very welcome. At the start of the day, many join us forReading time and enjoy reading with asmall group of children. Other classroomactivities benefit from extra adult help, suchas Art and D&T and parents are often asked to help on school trips. Parents also help in the running of the Libraries, Key Stage1and EYFS Book and DVD clubs. All volunteers working in school are required to have an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check (DBS). Advice regarding this can be obtained from either office.

We welcome parents and carers into Dorridge Primary School believing we are partners in the education of your children. There are many opportunities for parents to become involved in the life of the school and to gain a greater understanding of its work.

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)

The PTA exists to support the life and workof the school and is open to all members ofthe school community. Members of the PTAwork extremely hard organising many socialevents for parents and children, involvingthe wider local community. Money raisedprovides extra facilities and equipment forall children. We look forward to your support to the work of the PTA.

GOVERNING BODY

The Governing Body is made up of peoplefrom a variety of backgrounds. The schoolGovernors are a group of individuals, whoare elected, co-opted and are representativeof parents, staff, the Local Authority and thelocal community. School Governors workwith the Head Teacher and are responsiblefor setting the strategic direction of theschool. Contact with the Governing Bodycan be made via the school office.

Our curriculum is designed to reflect ouraims and to meet the requirements of theNational Curriculum (September 2014) andother Government guidance. Teaching during the morning sessions has afocus on English and Maths skills. The threeclasses are organised into ability sets forthese subjects, based on the learning needsof children.

Other subjects are taught within a cross-curricular theme, although some subjects are taught separately if this isjudged to be more appropriate. These afternoon sessions are taught inmixed-ability classes and teachers use avariety of organisational strategies, teachingtechniques and groupings, to ensure all children achieve their full potential.The curriculum is enhanced through a rangeof exciting opportunities, including themedays, theme weeks, theatre groups, visiting speakers, trips, artists and authors.

The School curriculum comprises all learningand experiences that we plan for our children. The central aims of our curriculumare to provide opportunities for all childrento learn and achieve; to promote children’sspiritual, moral, social and cultural develop-ment and prepare all children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. Our curriculum is organised so that children are stimulated,encouraged and challenged to develop theirindividual potential and personality. Our enthusiastic teachers plan, organiseand teach an effective curriculum, encouraging children to:

ENGLISHEnglish is our way of communicating inschool and in life. Children will developskills in speaking and listening, reading andwriting. Our English curriculum aims toenable children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively.Children are encouraged to read with confidence, fluency and understanding, aswell as developing a genuine desire to readfor pleasure and purpose. All children areencouraged to take books home to practiseand reinforce skills taught in school. OxfordReading Tree books provide a structure tothe teaching of reading and are enhancedby wider reading in a range of genres fromthe excellent selection of reading books fromthe school library. Children are helped to express theirthoughts and ideas through the writtenword. The link between reading and writingis emphasised, as well as the importance ofa real purpose for writing. Phonics, spellingand grammar are taught carefully to ensurechildren have the necessary skills to help

them become effective and accuratereaders and writers.

MATHEMATICSMathematics is important in everyday life.Our curriculum aims to develop children’sconfidence and enthusiasm in using andapplying mathematical skills and knowledgeto the world around them. It emphasisespractical activities to develop skills withnumbers, calculations, problem solving,measures, shape and space and data handling.

SCIENCEScience stimulates and excites children’s curiosity about events and things in the world around them. It can engage learners at many levels,including practical experiences. Teachingand learning in Science reflects our beliefthat children have a natural sense of aweand wonder in the world around them. We aim to provide children with a scienceknowledge base and encourage them to askquestions, make predictions and then to testthese in order to discover more about theworld around them.

COMPUTINGA high-quality computing education equipschildren to use computational thinking andcreativity to understand and change theworld. Computing has deep links with math-ematics, science and design and technology.The core of computing is computer science,in which children are taught the principlesof information and computation, how digitalsystems work and how to put this knowledgeto use through programming. Building onthis knowledge and understanding, childrenare equipped to use information technologyto create programs and systems. Computing also ensures that childrenbecome digitally literate – able to use, andexpress themselves and develop their ideasthrough, information and communicationtechnology – at a level suitable for the futureworkplace and as active participants in adigital world.

GEOGRAPHYThrough the study of geography as part ofThemed learning, children are given oppor-tunities to develop an awareness of theirimmediate surroundings, other places andhow people have used their environment.Fieldwork techniques, geographical enquiry,understanding and using maps are continu-ous themes. Children are encouraged tobroaden their knowledge of places andenvironments throughout the world,enabling them to encounter different soci-eties and cultures. Key Stage 1 has been awarded EcoSchoolsGreen Flag, recognising the importance ofour work focused on taking responsibility forour environment.

HISTORYHistory fires children’s curiosity about thepast in Britain and the wider world.Children consider how the past influencesthe present, what past societies were likeand what beliefs and cultures influencedpeople’s actions. Children develop achronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people,as well as being encouraged to research,sift through evidence and engage in activediscussion.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGYDesign and technology helps to preparechildren to participate in tomorrow’s rapidlychanging technologies. Children are helpedto develop the skills that enable them toplan, design, make and evaluate productsand systems. Older children have opportunities to become involved in projectsrun by Arden and recently, the Jaguar F1Challenge.

ARTArt is a natural form of expression and asource of great pleasure. We encouragechildren to develop their creative and imaginative talents through learning skillsand techniques using a variety of materialsand tools. Children learn to appreciateworks of art from a variety of artists andcultures, including paintings, sculptures and artefacts.

MFL – FRENCHLearning a language enriches the curriculumand provides children in Key Stage 2 withthe opportunity to learn French. Lessons arefun and interactive and the intention is to

promote positive attitudes to languagelearning through life.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONReligious Education (RE) is provided inaccordance with the Solihull AgreedSyllabus. The RE curriculum enables childrento learn about religion as well as reflect ontheir feelings about ideas and themes froma range of religions. Children will be developing skills and attitudes crucial in adiverse society – tolerance, respect andunderstanding.

MUSICIn Music, children engage practically insinging, composing and working creativelywith sound. Through active listening, children’s awareness, understanding and

appreciation of a wide variety of music aredeveloped.The school provides a wide range of musical activities and performances, including Wider Opportunities Strings,School Orchestra and Choir. Many childrenbegin their journey learning a musicalinstrument in Key Stage 1, with a busyschedule of lessons provided Solihull MusicService.

PE&GAMES

Physical Education is concerned with thepromotion of positive attitudes towardsphysical activity and well-being. Childrenare helped to acquire the skills needed toparticipate with confidence and enjoymentin a range of individual team activities atschool and in the wider community, and toappreciate the value of regular exercise asa way of keeping fit. A well-balanced programme of sportingactivities is provided for children across arange of indoor and outdoor opportunitiesin games, gymnastics, dance, swimming,outdoor and adventurous activities. Children have the opportunity to take partin sporting activities within school, and withother schools, including local tournamentsand festivals. Links are made within ourcluster schools and we benefit from supportfrom Arden and Lode Heath, with gymnastics, hockey, rugby and bench ball.

PE is enriched through a wide range of wellattended extra-curricular clubs and activities, for example cheerleading, fencing, girls and boys football and dance.These opportunities are provided by teachers and outside providers and enablechildren to develop personal and socialskills as well as preparing them for leisureactivities in later life.

All children in Year 6 have the opportunityto take part in a residential visit to PGL inShropshire. A range of outdoor and adventurous pursuits are offered including abseiling,high-ropes, canoeing, raft-building andarchery. These activities are highly valuedas children participate in physically challenging activities, making an importantcontribution to children’s personal andsocial development.Forest School is a developing curriculumarea in the school and currently children inReception and Year 3 participate in thisexciting and challenging activity. We are lucky to have provision for ForestSchool on the school site and withinDorridge Park.

PERSONAL, SOCIAL &HEALTHEDUCATION

Personal, Social and Health Education(PSHE) is an important area of the curriculum that helps children grow anddevelop as individuals and as members offamilies and communities. Through PSHE children will have the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes they need to lead confident,healthy, independent lives and to becomeinformed, active and responsible citizens.

Whole school systems emphasise the celebration of positive behaviour and sus-tained effort and achievement. The House system is integral to the schoolwith children and staff being members of ahouse:Warwick (Red)Kenilworth (Green)Ludlow (Yellow)Tamworth (Blue)Children are awarded House Tokens forpositive attitudes and behaviours which theyadd to class containers. Year 6 House Captains count up and collatethe results across the school, ready toannounce in Celebration Assemblies eachweek. House events, designed by the children are held each term and haveincluded Talent contests, Quiz shows, Craftcompetitions and sports events.

having met the national standard at theEnhanced Level. The School Council is a vibrant group ofchildren elected democratically from eachclass who meet weekly. This group puts forward new ideas, suggestions and ways of solving issues.

EARLY YEARS & FOUNDATION STAGECURRICULUMThe Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)Framework sets out the standards for development, learning and care of childrenfrom birth to five. It is important that all children are given the opportunity to experience the best possible start to theireducation. Children experience an exciting curriculum,both indoors and outdoors, designed tomeet the needs of children. This is fun, creative and play-based andchallenges each child to achieve their potential. Nursery and Reception teamswork closely to ensure a consistentapproach across this stage.

COLLECTIVE WORSHIPAssemblies take place each day and are animportant part of the daily routine. Themesare planned for each week to cover a rangeof topics and are delivered by Senior Teamand teachers. Themes are based on impor-tant values, reflecting Christian themes, butregularly incorporate stories and messagesfrom other religions. Children are encouraged to develop a posi-tive attitude to other people, respecting theirright to hold different beliefs from their ownand towards living in a society of diversereligions. Parents are invited to special assemblies,such as Harvest, Mother’s Day andRemembrance Day.

HOMEWORKHomework can make an important contribu-tion to children’s progress at school. As wellas reinforcing learning in the classroom,homework helps children to develop theskills and attitudes they will need for suc-cessful independent lifelong learning.Tasks set include:● Daily reading to be recorded in the HomeSchool Organiser● Weekly spellings in Years 2 to Year 6● Weekly English and Maths tasks in Years1 to Year 6

Reception children should read regularlyand parents are invited to record this in theHome School Organiser. Children also havea pack of words and sounds to practise athome to support phonics learning in school.In Key Stage 2 teachers will include tasksthat link to other curriculum areas encourag-ing creative tasks and research. Parents areencouraged to support their children withhomework, providing invaluable attentionand interest in their learning.

BEHAVIOURAt Dorridge Primary School we continuallyseek to improve and develop good behaviour because we believe that if children behave well they are happy, and ifthey are happy, they will learn.‘Golden Time’ has been included in eachclass’ weekly curriculum as part of ourschool’s positive behaviour policy.We want every child to feel confident,happy and safe. We have the highestexpectations in terms of learning, behaviourand attitudes, and encourage children todevelop similar beliefs in their own potential, together with pride in theirachievement.Systems emphasising praise, recognitionand reward are in place across the schoolto promote and celebrate sustained effortand contributions towards the school community. These include WeeklyEndeavour for each class, House tokens andMerit Marks. Dorridge Decorum enhances our behaviourpolicy by giving positive praise for goodmanners and respect and reflects our positive ethos towards good behaviour.A graduated system of time-out within classes and at lunchtimes is used to helpchildren learn how to improve their behaviour and take responsibility for thechoices they make. All forms of bullying and harassment areconsidered to be unacceptable and are nottolerated.

All incidents will be taken very seriously andfollowed up in accordance with our Anti-bullying Policy which is available viathe website. Children are taught how torecognise and seek support with anyinstances of bullying and Year 6 childrendesign an Anti-bullying Charter for thewhole school to sign up to.

CATERING FOR THE NEEDS OF ALL CHILDRENWe believe that every child at DorridgePrimary School is unique and special, andwe aim to provide a broad and balancedcurriculum for all. We are committed todeveloping cultures, policies and practicesthat are inclusive.

Systems are in place to identify when children have barriers affecting their learning, followed by specific interventionsto help children overcome these barriers.This practice of personalising learningapplies to all children and for academicallymore able children this means provision ofappropriate challenge to develop their particular talents.

Children succeed highly at our school inmany aspects across the curriculum and wecelebrate and encourage excellence.Children leave Dorridge Primary School literate and numerate and our end of Year 6results are consistently above the nationalaverage.

Where children are identified as needingadditional support in any aspect, the schoolfollows the Statutory Code of Practice forSpecial Educational Needs and Disabilities(SEND). This ensures that each child’s needsare individually and appropriately cateredfor, and that any outside agencies areinvolved in providing guidance and support.

TRANSITIONChildren are grouped into 3 mixed abilityclasses at Reception. At the end of Year 2and Year 4 these classes are reviewed andarranged into three new classes to ensure abalanced distribution of children, givingconsideration to gender, ability and SpecialNeeds. Children’s views are taken intoaccount and they are asked to name threechildren they would like to be with in theirnew class when they move into the KeyStage 2 school building. We guarantee thateach child will be with at least one of the

children they have listed.

This system of creating three new classes may be necessary in other

year groups and this will be thedecision of the Head teacher

after consultation with staff.

We are an accredited National HealthySchool and were recently awardedEnhanced Status for our work to ensure children understand the importance of ahealthy lifestyle. There are many opportunities, in the curriculum and in other activities, for children to learn about healthy choices.

HEALTHYEATING & SCHOOL

MEALS

SCHOOL MEALSWe are very fortunate to have a kitchen inboth Key Stage 1 and 2 buildings. Children from Reception to Year 2 are enti-tled to a Universal Free School meal. In KeyStage 2 a charge is made for mealspayable through the Parent Pay system. In both Key Stages children have a range ofchoices which can be viewed on line.Children with specific dietary requirementscan be accommodated by communicatingthis to the school cooks.

Alternatively, children maybring in a packed lunch

and again, healthy choices are encouraged.

A drink of water is provided for all

children who bringpacked lunches.

Alternatively,they can bring in a healthy snack fromhome. Chocolate, crisps or sweets of anykind are not permitted. If you feel your child may be eligible forFree School meals, please contact the schooloffice for information.WATERChildren are encouraged to bring water ina named container each day, as being well-hydrated has been shown to help our brainsstay active and alert. No squashes or juicesare permitted and bottles should be takenhome each day to be washed.

ABSENCESRegular attendance is central to ensure allchildren can reach their full potential andaccess all that school has to offer.Government guidance does not permit parents to take children on holidays duringterm time and any taken will be unauthorised. Any application for leave ofabsence during term time should be madeto the Head Teacher, who must be satisfiedthat there are exceptional circumstances thatwarrant the granting of leave.The Attendance Policy can be viewed on theschool website.If your child is absent through sickness orany unavoidable cause, please contactschool by telephone by 9.00am on the firstday of absence. This will be an authorisedabsence.If your child has an appointment of anykind, such as a doctor’s appointment, pleasecomplete a Request for Leave of Absenceform, even if it is only part of the day. These will be authorised. Where possible,appointments should be made outside ofschool hours.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER ILLNESSChildren returning to school after illnessshould clearly be fit to do so and free fromany infection. Details of exclusion periodsfor infectious illnesses can be found on theschool website.Please send your child with a writtenexplanatory note when he or she returns toschool to complete our records.

FIRST AIDMinor cuts and grazes are dealt with atschool and many staff have First Aid training. Parents will be contacted if we areconcerned about an injury so that furthertreatment can be arranged by the parent.

HEAD LICEHead lice are a constant problem withschool-age children. Please check yourchild’s hair and scalp weekly. If head liceare found, children should not be in schooluntil they have received treatment and theyare clear from lice. Please inform school ifyou find head lice. If lice are found in yourchild’s hair, we will contact you to take yourchild home for treatment.

MEDICINESParents are advised to provide the schoolwith full information about any medicalneeds so that staff can exercise appropriatelevels of care for children. If medicines arerequired to be held in school for the schoolyear, a School Nurse will call you to discussa care plan which is held in the schooloffice. Items such as inhalers and allergymedicines can be sent to school and storedcentrally for children to access when neededand taken on trips. When children need short-term medicines,such as antibiotics, age-appropriate systemsare in place. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, parents should come in to school to administer medicines and no medicines ofthis kind can be given to children by staff.In Key Stage 2 we encourage a little moreindependence. Parents can choose toadminister medicines themselves as beforeor, if they feel their child is sufficiently sensible and well-organised, children cancome to the school office to receive medicine from a member of the office staff. In this case, parents should complete aConsent to Administer Medicines form.

SUN PROTECTIONDuring sunny weather, children should havea named sun hat in school to wear outside.We would ask you to apply a long lastingsun cream to children before school asschool staff are not permitted to applycream to children. Children may reapplytheir own sun cream.

BICYCLES & SCOOTERSYear 5 children learn cycling skills throughthe BIKEABILITY scheme (formerly CyclingProficiency). If they pass the test at the endof the course they can ride their bike toschool if parents wish them to. A writtenrequest must be made to the Head Teacher.Whilst we encourage proficient cyclists toride to school, we are aware of the significant traffic hazards at busy times.Parents should consider carefully the risksinvolved and should choose their route carefully. It is expected that children whocycle to school should wear a helmet.Younger children may ride scooters andbikes to school, always accompanied by anadult. Scooters and bikes should be namedand parked only in the appropriate sheds

provided. No cycling or scooting is permitted in the

school.

CHARGING POLICYAt Dorridge Primary School we are constantly seeking to enrich the children’s learning experiencessuch as memorable trips, visitors to schooland running activities and workshops. For educational visits we ask for a voluntary contribution; however there may be an occasion that a trip is cancelled if there are insufficient contributions to make it financially viable.

SCHOOL FUNDParents are asked to give a voluntary contribution per family, per year to SchoolFund (which has charitable status). All money donated will be used in the genuine educational interests of all children.

COMPLAINTSAny complaints about school matters shouldfirst be discussed with the class teacher orbrought to the attention of the Head Teacher.There is a formal Complaints Procedurewhich parents can follow if a matter cannotbe resolved informally. See the school website for details.

MOBILE PHONESOnly children in Year 6 may bring a phoneto school after a written request, includingvalid justification, has been made to theHead Teacher. If permitted, phones mustthen be handed in to the school office, kept in the school safe during the day andcollected by children at 3.30pm.

PARKINGThe roads around our school are very busyat the start and end of the school day. In theinterests of safety for everyone, it is vital thatcars are parked legally and considerately.Please observe the voluntary one-way sys-tem on Hanbury Road.Do not:● Park on yellow lines or ‘Keep Clear’areas● Park across driveways● Park half on and half off kerbs● Park or stop to drop off on Station Road
