Jack Lucas - Dorridge's Own BBC Masterchef StarJack Lucas is just 20 years old but has achieved a level of success that belies his youth.
From his high A level grades at Solihull School which enabled him to get into Exeter University where he was awarded a First in Physical Geography, to being accepted onto a Graduate Programme - he was doing well.
And then his girlfriend decided one evening to go online and enrol him on to BBC’s Masterchef 2014. A long arduous journey later, having reached the Finals, he came second! Not bad in one of the toughest competitions on live television.
Jack’s road to being a successful chef began at home in Dorridge with his Mum and Grandma both excellent cooks. Unusual for a young man his age, if there is a dinner party to prepare, he will happily rise early to get to the Birmingham Markets where he says the selection, choice and competitive prices are unbeatable. He mentioned he could buy 4 wood pigeons there for under a fiver,
something I thought might cause a chuckle or two from a few readers. He’s seen whole deer, razor clams, scallops and the best fish…his choices are not for the culinary faint hearted.
Whilst attending the Sainsbury’s 20/20 Leaders programme he’s also been continuing his work with Masterchef’s pop up restaurants in London, cooking in a team for 12,000 people in five weeks. A further introduction to the brutally stressful world of being a chef.
I asked him what the best thing was about coming home and he said immediately “Mum’s roast lamb at Sunday dinner”…Mrs Lucas - you are officially appreciated..…!
An extended version of this article together with Jack’s Christmas Chocolate Tart with Orange Ice Cream recipe created especially for the readers of MY Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge is available online at www.swanpublishing.org

“People often associate the need for an LPA with old age and dementia. However it can become necessary in the case of stroke or accident in which case there is the chance of temporary incapacity but then when the individual is back on their feet they regain control of making their own decisions again. So it is never too early to consider an LPA,” Eleanor adds.
Wilkes offers their clients an efficient, friendly service in the community where they can see somebody face to face who will handle their wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and trust and probate needs from beginning to end.
If you would like any more information you can contact Eleanor Holland at The Wilkes Partnership to discuss in person - [email protected]
The Wilkes Partnership LLPStanton House, 54 Stratford RoadShirley, Solihull, B90 3LS0121 733 8000 | www.wilkes.co.uk
So, you have a will - but have you considered a Lasting Power of Attorney?
Having a will means your affairs should be in order for after you are gone, but a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a vital document to have in place should decisions need to be made on your behalf whilst you are still alive, according to Eleanor Holland from Solihull-based solicitors The Wilkes Partnership.
“If you suffer from dementia, financial and medical decisions will need to be made on your behalf and if you have an LPA in place this means that your named attorney or attorneys can make those decisions for you,” she says.
“The sad fact is that if you show any signs of dementia then it may not be possible to put an LPA in place at that point. The costly, lengthy alternative is for a loved one to apply to be your deputy and it can take up to 4-6 months from the point of instruction for the court to consider your application, and that is after you have gone through the paperwork and all parties have signed it. And the cost can be more than double the cost of an LPA application.
“Whilst your family wait for the deputy application to go through your life could be in limbo. For example it can affect the accessibility of funds for care home fees and can stop your loved ones making health and welfare decisions for you, which an LPA will provide for.
“You could save yourself and your family a lot of stress, heartache and expense if you have an LPA in place.

TESTIMONIAL“I put an advertisement in the last issue for Dog Sitting. I just wanted to let anyone whose business would benefit from more customers know
that advertising in here works. Since the magazine was distributed, I
have received approximately 3 calls a week - sometimes one a day which
has resulted in confirmed work.”

This picture shows the present premises on Solihull High Street, as they were in the early part of the 20th century. As you can see, little has changed.
Vintage Solihull
Look familiar? This building now houses MacDonalds on the high street and was the Solihull post office from 1857 to 1911.Thank you for your responses to our query on Mrs Harris’ flat in the High Street.
One person’s memories of her were clearly not fond ones. (Sent unpunctuated - an irony of its own) "my headmistress flora forster did live in the flat over harris's shoe shop but i never went there because i dont think any pupils did. she used to walk her wretched little dog through the park to malvern hall" . Jill.
Quite a different opinion from Maureen Bragg:
“As a pupil of Malvern Hall from 1952 - 1959 I can confirm that Miss Forster, our headmistress, lived in the flat pictured. She had a fine view of many of the goings and would know if any of her girls had visited the cinema on weeknights as the building was opposite.
“She kept an eye on our out of school behaviour, and informed us in no uncertain terms if something displeased her!
“Incidentally she had a lovely old lady, named Violet, who looked after the domestic side of her life.”
Don’t forget to leave us your name and email address so we can respond or give you a credit.

How healthy would your business look if all your customers paid on time?Do you shudder at the thought of expenses like wages and VAT?Do you want to get customers to pay more promptly without upsetting them? What if we were to tell you all this can be achieved without costing the earth or making a long term financial commitment?
The ladies at UK Central Credit Management offer a service that not only brings in what’s owed to you more quickly, but also helps you evaluate your processes to avoid scary financial situations in the future.
Small businesses are the worst for giving credit but not chasing their own money. They are too busy doing a great job for their customers and often embarrassed to chase up payments. But the sad truth is, waiting in vain for these payments to come through is bankrupting businesses.
These charming ladies are no stuffed suits, and have an astonishing success rate, which we at Swan Publishing have seen first hand (within one week!). They will manage invoices, statements going out, cash coming in and resolve queries quickly to get the results you need. And their friendly manner makes you proud to call them a part of your team. They operate as an extension of your business providing a back

A new venture?Local businessman Roger Browne looks at a few critical success factors for your new business.
You’ve had lots of advice, read the books, perhaps been on a course and got the plan. Here are a few key questions and thoughts that I hope will help you start well, develop your customer base, and move your business from strength to strength.
Delivering your pitch expertly and confidently is a key tool. Are you able to clearly say what you are offering, at what cost, and crucially what the benefits will be to your customer? Practice your pitch on friends and family. They can help to ‘sell’ you.
Do you look, act and sound professional? Customers need to be confident that they will receive the promised benefits. The importance of how you present yourself cannot be over stressed.
Under-promise and over-deliver! Never deliver less than expected!
Delight and reward your first customers – they can be a powerful marketing force by spreading the word.
Invoicing & Payments. You have to be confident you will be paid AND also know when – often it’s later than you think! If you spend significantly on raw materials you need to be certain you will be paid before your suppliers demand their money! If finances aren’t your strength – get help.
Have you done a financial business plan? No? Free assistance can always be found to help you. Understanding financial limitations and keeping tight control is critical. Learn what “Over-trading” means.
Focus on what people ‘want’ and not what they need.
Bullet point the advantages of buying from you. Find your Unique Selling Point.
Do your research on competitors. Nothing wrong in duplicating success – but make it even better.
Important… Budget for PR and marketing in your Business Plan. Don’t ignore Social Media … and Network.
And finally, all the very best. Roger.
Roger worked with Coventry University on the creation of the Innovation School, the delivery of innovation support to existing businesses and support to new businesses to help them commercialise their offerings.

The Edgbaston High School Ethos: Educate, Enrich, EngageFollowing outstanding examination results this summer, Edgbaston High School‘s leavers are now studying a broad range of competitive degree courses at some of the country’s most sought after universities, amongst them Birmingham, King’s College, London and Manchester. These achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils but also to the success of the EHS Ethos. Pastoral care as an integral part of every aspect of school life, working hand-in-hand with academic success, has long been considered a trademark of the School.
Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience: pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work and benefit from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem.
“We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges and to acquire new skills. This can provide character-building opportunities for all, which in turn instils confidence and a sense of achievement.
”Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly holistic education.”

We won an Award! My Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge magazine is still in its infancy having been launched in August this year, and already has achieved award winning status.
At the glittering international Community Magazine Awards evening in October Amy Watson, Director of Swan Publishing was presented with the award for Best New Magazine for My Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge.
Amy said: “We were honoured and delighted to receive this award which is largely due to the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of our wonderful editor Julia Parsons.
“Julia’s focus on strong locally relevant editorial content, together with the exciting mix of advertisers was what grabbed the attention of the judges. They were particularly impressed that it was supported by the Mayor and its pages were also graced with the likes of Prince Charles and Lesley Joseph.”
“But the proof of the pudding is in the eating so we would love to know what you the reader thinks of this fledgeling magazine. Please tweet, Facebook or email us any comments or suggestions you might have.”

Unveiling The Truth About CataractsLatest research for Optegra Birmingham Eye Hospital shows while 63 per cent of British adults state they know what a cataract is, when challenged to describe it, incorrect responses varied from scarring of the eye to skin growing over the eye.
Myth: You have to wait for your cataract to be ‘ripe’ to remove it
FALSE. You can have a cataract removed as soon as it is diagnosed that symptoms are affecting your lifestyle. Avoid delay before your cataract is seriously affecting day to day activities like driving.
Myth: A cataract is a film which grows across the surface of the eye
FALSE. A cataract is the clouding of the lens within the eye. It is very common, expected to affect one in three people aged over 65 years.
Myth: I can still drive safely with cataracts
FALSE. As the nights draw in more and more people with cataracts will notice strong glare from car lights, which can make driving more dangerous. If you are noticing these symptoms get your eyes checked.
Myth: I will still need to wear glasses after my cataract op
TRUE. If you were wearing glasses for near and far vision before your cataract developed, you will probably still need to wear them after your procedure.
HOWEVER, outside of the NHS, you can ‘upgrade’ from a monofocal lens to a multifocal lens – such as Optegra’s ClarivuTM refractive lens exchange package – and have an opportunity to reduce your dependence on glasses at the same time as removing your cataract.
Myth: Cataract surgery is complicated and means an overnight stay in hospital
FALSE. With the skills of the surgeon and the latest technology, this can be a straightforward, painless procedure for the patient and is treated as a day case. The procedure is typically performed with local anaesthetic eye drops and can take less than 20 minutes per eye.

• If there is any tension in your family then steer clear of alcohol, it will only aggravate the situation.
• Christmas can be a very hectic time especially if not everyone is helping. If things get a bit heated, head out for a long walk on a frosty afternoon – a bit of space, fresh air and exercise are great antidotes for tension.
• Consider family members who struggle with the festive period and may be on their own. Just popping in briefly or giving them a call can really help.
Ruth Levesley of Relate Birmingham, says: “The period after Christmas is the busiest time for Relate. We know the pressures that people face. If the festive season is getting too much for you, then talk to someone, or come and see one of our counsellors by calling 0121 643 1638 or visit the website www.relate.org.uk
All I Want For Christmas Is..... No ArgumentsThis Christmas, Relate has put together the following tips to help families keep the peace this festive season:
• For a lot of people money will be tight, so don’t succumb to pressure and spend more than you can afford. Getting into a mountain of debt will cost a great deal more in the long run. An honest positive chat with your children explaining what is possible and what isn’t could save a lot of heartbreak in the future.
• Who goes where and when can be a huge issue for parents who have split up and step families, especially if you are at loggerheads. Keep your children’s best interests at heart. Talk to your child about who they want to spend time with over the holidays, perhaps involving grandparents. Children feel guilty about who they spend time with and will worry if anyone is left on their own. Discuss it with them if they are old enough and if not, then compromise with the other parent to find a harmonious solution.

Pat remembers a couple coming into the store for their lunchtime sandwiches many years ago when courting. They subsequently married and now have college age children and still catch up with Pat when a return or order is required. ”I feel honoured when people allow me to share their lives” Pat says.
She also remembers helping a local dignitary in sourcing some hard to find boots for a trip to Lapland only to find a bottle of champagne waiting as thanks upon her arrival to work the next day.
One of her career highlights was being chosen as a Host Guide at the Company’s AGM held at the NIA where Pat met Sir Stuart Rose, and more recently, the current CEO Marc Bolland during a visit to the Solihull store.

There can’t be many people who haven’t stood in the queue on the 2nd floor of our M&S, patiently observing the staff, whilst waiting for their turn, so we thought you’d like to know about someone who is about to see her 25th year working in one of our national institutions.
Pat Gray has lived and worked in Solihull for most of her life and has two grown up children. She went to Harrison Barrow Girls Grammar School in Hall Green and left at 16. Her first job was at The Norfolk Hotel on the Hagley Road, part of a temperance chain of hotels.
Ask Pat what it is that she enjoys the most about her job, and without hesitation says, “..meeting people”. She loves the strong rapport with customers and colleagues alike. Having joined temporarily for Christmas, M&S wisely recognised her as a valuable asset proven after 25 years with them.

Tales From HeronfieldThe Little Fox Cub Lost in West Bromwich Finds his way to Knowle
Late one afternoon, a veterinary nurse in West Bromwich called me on the off chance that as a rescue centre, we would take a tiny fox cub found out in daylight, alone and standing on the side of a busy road. The baby was dazed and easily captured by a kindly person.
The little fox cub was cold, undernourished and dehydrated but otherwise, unhurt. The vet estimated his age at four weeks old.
I agreed to take him, so the veterinary nurse drove all the way with him from West Bromwich to our centre. We named him Little Fox.
The little fella had to be taught how to eat. At this stage he’d still be suckling underground. I rushed to my vets and bought food used for weaning wildlife and, using fingers, put it on his gums and lips, which he had to lick off. This paid off and with patience and time, he began to eat solids and thrive.

Chris Tye - A Singer SongwriterDo you like Paul Simon? Nick Drake? Lovely melodies and poignant lyrics that delight with their eloquent poetry? A song you only have to listen to once or twice - and you get it and want more?
I’d been sent a link to Soundcloud and asked if I could mention Chris to you as he released an album in November. I duly listened and …well…I loved it. Each track was better than the last! My ears are only the same as yours but having spent all my life in the record industry I like to think I know quality when I hear it.
Chris is based in Balsall Common and recorded the album in Knowle and Kings Heath mixing bare acoustic guitar and vocal songs with more ambitious string-filled arrangements. He says, “…one song was written after having a crisis chat with my mum. I was stressed out about some life matter and she told me how I was a really calm and loving child. It made me think about how we change through life and so I wrote ‘The Unassuming Start.’ I have two long time collaborators on backing vocals and on this track, a brass ensemble. I was fixed on the idea of some ‘Hovis’ brass over the middle-eight…”

usually have much trouble with donations but we do have problems raising £10,000, the cost to send the container. We also have problems storing the equipment we have collected until the container departs for Africa. And then it’s a struggle on our own to get the donated equipment to the collection depot (which is usually in Castle Bromwich) on the day the container is loaded. If anyone can offer a solution to our short term storage problem or perhaps assist us on the day with transport to Castle Bromwich, we’d love to hear from them.”
If any school or group is looking for a good cause to do an event for, this is high on the list of worthwhile charities to support, helping to fund the transport of the container to Malawi.

From Solihull to MalawiSolihull couple, Graham and Angela Smith are the driving force behind a charity, Friends of Malawi.
During an African sojourn the couple visited a village in Malawi and were so moved by the conditions they began collections of needed items and now annually in March, send a container to a village called Mtunthama in Central Malawi.
The village has a hospital; an orphanage, a church; secondary and primary schools; and wonderfully, a Scout Group. Supplies are sent to all, mostly in the form of second hand goods such as furniture and books no longer required and discarded by Solihull schools.
Additionally, much needed medical equipment not wanted by our surgeries and hospitals are gathered, together with blankets and clothes for the orphanage. Scouting equipment such as tents, cooking equipment and uniforms are gratefully received.

Solihull RemembersHow many times have you walked past a war memorial and perhaps noticed the list of names but never stopped to to wonder about the person that name represents.
Every name has a story behind it and Solihull Libraries Heritage & Local Studies would like your assistance helping them trace anyone who died as a result of their war service in The Great War of WW1 be they a soldier, a nurse or perhaps a doctor…their role wasn’t relevant as long as they were in the military and died serving their country. So far the dedicated group of people doing the research have tracked down 730 people but there are about 20 who are not on any of the war memorials and on whom have they no information.
This is an ongoing project for the next four years. They’d like as much information as is possible about the backgrounds of the names they’ve uncovered - family, location, loves and lives so they become people like you and me.
