IMAX® FILMS – NOW SHOWING

ELYSIUM: The IMAX ExperienceNow showing through September 4, 2013In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well. Now Showing through September 30, 2013It's a natural history epic. It's a compelling detective story. It's a scientific adventure at its best. It took Dr. Fred Urquhart almost 40 years to discover the monarch butterflies' secret hideaway and prove the most incredible migration on Earth. Following the year-long annual migration cycle of the butterflies, the award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of monarchs in their remote wintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2011 and again in 2012 and also along their migratory routes from Canada, across the U.S. and into Mexico. The IMAX 3D technology immerses you in the astounding migration experience as two generations of the butterflies migrate north and then a Super Generation miraculously finds its way from Canada to a few isolated mountaintops in Mexico - to a place it has never been! SPECIAL EXHIBITS

TONY HAWK: RAD SCIENCEOn exhibit through September 2, 2013What does Sir Isaac Newton have to do with skateboarding? Find out when you explore the 25 interactive exhibits that demonstrate force, momentum, acceleration, velocity and inertia in the new traveling exhibit, Tony Hawk: RAD Science. This new exhibition shows how skateboarding uses important physics principles to produce radical tricks. Find out how the physics of gravity, force, velocity and balance make radical tricks possible in action sports. Explore over 25 interactive experiences including: Bodacious Board Balance: Ride stationary skateboards designed to test your balance in

classic tricks like “grinding” and “manuals” on the safety of a padded surface. 900 Vert Theatre: Watch a short video and see the first time Tony Hawk ever successfully

completed the "900" (2.5 revolutions in mid air) in competition. Board Drop: Predict which skateboard will drop first in this exhibit that demonstrates the

principle of free fall. Weight vs. Mass: Does gravitational force change your weight or mass? Step on a skate deck

scale to find out your weight and mass on the sun and on all the planets in our solar system. Radical Trick Breakdown: Using super slow motion video frame-by-frame, break down the

four most common skateboarding street tricks. Create-a-Skate: Learn the science behind skateboards including design, engineering, wood

selection, production and accessorizing. Energy Skate Shop: Learn about simple machines, how they make work easier, and how a

skateboard is a combination of six simple machines. History Bowl: Compare major milestones in physics history to major accomplishments in the

history of skateboarding. Learn about the evolution of skateboard design and see Tony Hawk's first skateboard.

Video Game Physics: Use your knowledge of physics to control Tony Hawk's ride through a virtual skate park.

Newton’s Pool: Go inside a replica of an empty swimming pool to experiment with Newton's Laws of Motion (inertia, acceleration and action/reaction). See how a pool’s unique characteristics created the origin of extreme skateboarding.

Friction Hill: Use pucks on three different simulated surfaces (dirt, concrete and ice) to see how the surface affects motion.

Momentum Machine: Jump and spin to learn about angular momentum. Loop of Centripetal Force: Using plastic balls, attempt the 360-degree "loop of death". Watch

videos of skateboarders who have succeeded and failed at this trick. Wipeout Ambulance: See how inventions like helmets, kneepads, and wrist guards have

helped dissipate the extreme forces of a wipeout. Forces Ramp: Find out what forces affect a skateboarder's ability to do tricks. Tech Deck Mini Skate Park: A tabletop, mini skate park to help younger visitors understand

the physics presented in the exhibition.

POWERFUL YOU! Presented by Broward Health

Page 5: docs/Calendar of Events …  · Web viewCURRENT EVENTS CALENDAR. August 9, 2013 (Photos available . u. pon req. u. est) Museum of Discovery and Science and AutoNation® IMAX …

Powerful You! showcases the amazing miracle of your body and the tools used by health professionals to keep you healthy. Powerful You! is comprised of four zones: Powerful Team, Powerful Pulse, Powerful You and The Cutting Edge. Visitors use a robot to conduct surgery, operate a simulated Cyberknife, drive a DUI simulator and learn all about the importance of the “Golden Hour.”

GO GREEN! Sponsored by, Republic Services, Inc.Ever wonder where your waste goes after the garbage truck takes it away? Harry the Heap, the recycling robot, knows and is excited to show you the importance of recycling, safe waste disposal, and the science behind landfills. Come explore with Harry as he guides visitors in learning what “Going Green” really means. In Go Green! guests will discover how to recognize the right materials for recycling, ways to reduce household waste and to be familiar with new sources of clean energy.

AVIATION STATION Take to the sky as you learn the science of flight in Aviation Station. The hands-on experience begins by climbing into three different replica cockpit simulators. Visitors can practice their piloting skills by test “flying” the Lockheed Martin F/35 Joint Strike fighter, the newest jet fighter now being developed; the Edge 540, an aerobatic single engine aircraft used in the worldwide Red Bull Air Race; and the Vought F4U Corsair, argued to be one of the finest aircrafts of WWII. These interactive simulators will immerse visitors in aviation technology and put them right in the pilot’s seat. Try your hand at the Interactive Radio Control Helicopter Station as you test your skills and watch the helicopter lift off, hover, fly clockwise and counter clockwise and ultimately land on the helipad. Ever see a real aircraft engine? Get up-close-and-personal with the Pratt & Whitney 985 Bushwacker rotary engine and examine its detail.
