Mentorship ABC

Heather Sterling-Marriott, ACB, CL

Imagine that you are

about to explore the

beautiful Amazon jungle

and you are given the

choices between

navigating on your own or

with an experienced tour guide, what would

you choose? I believe that I would choose

with immense gratitude the companionship

of an experienced guide as he or she would

provide me a safer, more productive and

pleasant experience.

As a Toastmaster, our educational program

is very well developed network of projects

that are designed to guide each member on

a self-development track in either

communication or leadership track. The

map is laid out before us, but with

implementation of the mentorship, the

benefits could be greater.

Mentorship is a personal developmental

relationship between two people that

helps them maximize their potential. As a

matter of fact the potency of a well-

established and implemented mentorship

program is a triple “win-win-win” formula

for the mentee, the mentor and the

Toastmasters organization. The mentor

learns to become more and more effective

at synthesizing and transmitting

information. The mentee learns a fresh

perspective on navigating the program and

the Toastmasters organization witness

significant personal growth and

development.

In these programs, the needs and specific

goals of the mentee are usually the

centrepiece of the assessment, plan and

implementation. The context can be set up

to work one-on-one, in teams consisting of

peers with different backgrounds and skills

mentoring each other (as in an executive

team, area council team or a division

council team) or a small group with a senior

person guiding.

Some of the benefits:

For the mentee:

  Access to support system

A fresh perspective & exposure to

experience on navigating the program,

a project or a specific situation.

  Identification of skill set

For mentor:

  Exposure to new talent pool

  Satisfaction from imparting wisdom &

experience to others

Enhancement of coaching, mentoring, leadership and management skills

It is a proved program that allows members

to move forward and manifest their

leadership within their club, in the

community at large or in given areas of life.

Our Toastmaster organization is an

organization where one member learns,

grows and accomplishes and then passes on

best practices and lessons learned to the

next. With this partnership, navigating

leadership and communication can be a

very stimulating, secure and promising

adventure.

McGill Mentorship Program

Diana Cheptene, VP Mentorship of McGill

Toastmasters Club

A few months ago, I

took on the

challenge of

revamping our club’s

Mentorship Program

in order to provide a

better experience for members. I have

learned a lot about mentorship since and I

would like to share my thoughts to inspire

you to embark on your personal mentorship

 journey.

We have collected feedback through a short

online survey and come up with the

following ideas:

We have set expectations for

mentors. Mentors are encouraged to

meet with mentees on a monthly basis,

provide one-on-one evaluation and

coaching on public speaking and

provide support and encouragement;

We decided to organize a mentorship

orientation session to help mentorsand mentees establish goals,

expectations and rules and we will also

organize a social dedicated to

mentorship to provide more

opportunity for individual feedback.

We have created an online flipbook of

mentors to facilitate the process and

help new members find a mentor

faster. Mentors featured in the

flipbook share their biography, public

speaking experience, hobbies and

interests.

Mentorship is a journey of sharing and

improvement for both the mentor and

mentee. We hope that our club’s

experience can spark enthusiasm and new

ideas for your club’s

mentorship program.

Expectations for your mentor:

Provide one-on-one evaluation andfeedback

Provide coaching and tips on public

speaking

Help me prepare and review speeches

pre-meetings

Evaluate performance in Toastmasters

manuals

Answer questions related to meetings

Support me with my own personal

goals and expectations in joining

Toastmaster

Provide support and encouragement

Moment of Humour

This man was driving with his wife

and mother-in-law when he was

stopped by the Highway Patrol. When the man rolled down his

window the officer smiled and said,

"We've been trying to encourage

better driving habits in this state,

so we've been stopping our most

courteous drivers and giving them

awards for their superior driving

skills. It's my pleasure to present

you with this citation and a check

for $100."

"Wow," said the man who was very

impressed with the award.

The officer asked, "Just out of

curiosity, how do you think you'll

spend the money."

The man answered, "Well, now

that I can afford it, I think I'll go and

get my driver's license, perhaps

even some auto insurance."

His wife was stunned, and said,

"Don't mind him, officer. He

ALWAYS says ridiculous thingswhen he's been drinking."

This really angered the mother-in-

law who said "I knew it! I just knew

something like this would happen. I

TOLD you we wouldn't get far in

this stolen car!
