CONCORDIA’S PURPOSE “To Make the Love of Jesus R.E.A.L. in the Lives of All

People”

SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

TRANSFIGUATION OF OUR LORD February 15, 2015

8:15 and 10:45 a.m.

AS WE GATHER

Who is the Christ? Old Testament believers had the Law and the

Prophets to point ahead to Christ, but this was only a shadow of

what would come. The transfiguration provided an opportunity

for the disciples to see this manifest: the fading glory of the old, the Law and

the Prophets; replaced with the permanence of the new, Christ Jesus, come to

save us. By the work of the Holy Spirit, the veil that obscures Christ’s face is

removed, and by faith, we are called to the light.

 means to be seated

means to stand, unless repeated standing is difficult

+ DIVINE SERVICE – SETTING FIVE +

 INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and

confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the

name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and

iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly

deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am

heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I

pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the

holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved

Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor,

sinful being.

(Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.)

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called

and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God

unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord

Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father

and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

 PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray together.

ALL: God of glory and grace, in the transfiguration of Jesus, You

revealed Him to be Your only begotten Son sent from Your

presence for the salvation of all people. Grant that we all may

be transformed into His image from one degree of glory to

another; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives

and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever. Amen.

CATECHISM INSTRUCTION

The Sacrament of the Altar, Articles 1, 2

P: What is the Sacrament of the Altar?

ALL: It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ

under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us

Christians to eat and to drink.

P: Where is this written?

ALL: The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul

write: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was

betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He

broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this

is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance

of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper,

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying:

“Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My

blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This

do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

We invite the children forward as we sing: LSB #740, v.1

I am Jesus’ little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am;

For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need and well

provides me,

Loves me ev’ry day the same, Even calls me by my name.

 TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS

 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us lift the needs of God’s people before the throne of grace and

intercede for all people in Jesus’ name.

Gracious Father, Your Law is written on the hearts of all people,

and the veil with which it clouds our vision is a burden that

neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear. Grant that as

Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, we may be transformed

by the Gospel; that through turning to the Lord in faith, the veil

may be removed, and we may walk in the freedom ministered by

the Holy Spirit through Your Word and Sacraments.

Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Gracious Father, You call certain men to become pastors among

Your people for the purpose of equipping Your saints for the

work of ministry, speaking the Gospel to all who will hear. Grant

to these men Your Holy Spirit through Your Word, that they may

be filled with all boldness in proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord.

Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Gracious Father, You appoint all who serve in positions of public

service in this and every nation. Grant that all civil servants may

discharge the duties of their offices with humility and instill in

them a desire to protect those among us who have no voice.

Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

7

P: Gracious Father, You have perfectly created this universe and all

who inhabit it. Grant that all who suffer from the corrupting

effects of human sin may experience Your healing power both

now and in the age to come, [especially . . .].

Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Gracious Father, You have given Yourself in Jesus for the life of

the world. Grant that we who feast at His Table may turn away

from our sins and toward the Lord in faith, trusting that in this

bread and wine He feeds us with His true body and blood.

Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

(Additional prayers may be offered here.)

P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,

trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

 SANCTUS

 WORDS OF OUR LORD

 PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup. We proclaim the

Lord’s death until He comes.

 THE LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
