Hannah’s Story Milagro de amor

Hanna is beautiful 14 year old Salvadoran girl, oldest of 5, of a family who has been through many struggles. 3 of the 5 children are special needs children. Hanna has been nearly deaf for most, or all, of her life. She doesn’t speak and only “signs” a little with her mother. Her mother’s lifelong dream has always been to some

how get some help for her daughter. Help has fi-nally come through the efforts of Dr. Melvin, a lo-cal doctor in Berlin, El Salvador, and the people of the Sacred Heart Medical Mission. It was through these people’s efforts and donations that Hanna was able to get a hearing test, a consult with a spe-cialist, and have both ears fitted for hearing aids. You can see her video on Sacred Heart Facebook page as well as the Sacred Heart website. Watch her reactions to the first time she is hearing with her new aids. It is a beautiful moment! We just received an email from Milagro, a longtime friend and one of our facilitatiors in El Salvador in regard to Hanna: Blessing to all the Team of the Medical Brigade, to all the supporters of the Sacred Heart Church that make possible these “miracles” of love.

Hugs, Milagro

We want you to know that you really can and do make a difference in someone else’s life. Thank you very much for making this possible.

Domestic Church Challenge of the Week

Every week the “Strong Catho-lic Families: Strong Catholic Youth” team will give you and

your family a new way you can promote your domestic church at

home!

As May is the month we celebrate Mary in our Catholic church, we challenge you to celebrate Mary at home! In the handout you received with your bulletin last week, "Forty Ways to Foster Prayer in Your Home", number 6, encourages you to create a May altar in your home with a statue of Mary surrounded by flowers. Make the connec-tion with your family that we did the same thing at Mass this weekend--crowned Mary with flowers. You may also want to embellish your May altar with a rosary, a candle and a cross. Once you have created your May altar in your home, pray with Mary during the month; Hail Mary and Hail Holy Queen are good choices or pray a decade of the rosary.

Look here every week for ways you can promote your Domestic Church!

Catholic Home Missions Appeal Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home missions be-cause they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs such as religious education, semi-nary formation, and lay ministry training to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

Walk for Life “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedi-cated you..” Jeremiah 1:5 The Pregnancy Center of Central Iowa is hosting their annual Walk for Life on May 6th at 9:00 AM starting at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The Pregnancy Center is a local non-profit agency that provides free services to women in crisis pregnancies. They provide counseling, post abortion counseling, parenting classes and material support where needed. They are there to provide loving support to women who might consider abortion as their only other option. This is only one of two fund-raisers held annually. You can help in one of three ways: First: COME AND WALK! First and foremost we

want walkers. By just coming to walk you can be a witness to the sanctity of human life. A witness to the fact that all life is precious in God’s eyes.

Second: Be a sponsor for the walk. Sign up to be a sponsor and collect pledges from family and friends. Many people are more than willing to do-nate a small amount to support this worthwhile cause. If you would like a sponsor sheet please con-tact Lee Mangrich at 641-831-9645.

Third: Pledge to a walker. There will be sign-up sheets in the back of church for anyone who wishes to support a walker. Any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

If you choose to be a sponsor please come to St. Stephen’s with your sponsor sheet by 8:30 for registra-tion. The walk will go on, rain or shine, so please pray for shine.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

As today’s gospel reveals, the first meal shared with the risen Lord happened in a place called Emmaus. Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on this story than in those prayerful moments at Mass when we return to our place after receiving Holy Communion. Those few moments give us an op-portunity to reflect on our stewardship of Christ’s presence within us. We have a chance to practice hospitality by inviting Jesus into our hearts to walk and talk with us about our own Emmaus journey. We can relive once again the time when he broke bread for the disciples. And just as they did, we too can recognize Christ in this meal we have just shared with others.

Life After Loss

“Grief is a most peculiar thing; we’re so helpless in the

face of it. It’s like a window that will simply open of its

own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do

nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time,

and a little less; and one day we wonder what has be-

come of it.” ― Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha

What does it mean when someone says the

Eucharist contains the “glorified” body of

our Lord Jesus Christ?

In 1551, the Council of Trent definitively taught that “in the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained’” (CCC 1374).

I’m not sure what “the glorified body of our Lord Jesus Christ” might refer to in your question, but I can make an educated guess. Since Jesus has suffered, died, and risen from

the dead, the sacramental presence contains the reality of the fullness of the experience of the paschal mystery. Every experience of the risen Jesus is an experience of

the fullness of the mystery and, as such, must include the

fact that he has been glorified through his resurrection from the dead. References to the Lord’s appearances after his res-urrection might be helpful here. “Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself” (Luke 24:39), Jesus told his disci-ples. The Catechism tells us that “Christ ‘will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body,’ into a ‘spiritual body’” (CCC 999). The reality of the resurrection “exceeds our imagination and understanding; it is accessible only to faith” (CCC 1000).

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. We have all heard it said that the Catholic Church condoned slavery; persecuted the Jews; murdered millions of Protestants during the In-quisition; and started the Crusades as a war against Muslims. Rodney Stark, one of the most respected authors and professors of early Christian history decided to discover the truth of these and other

“known faults” of Church. In his book, Bearing

False Witness : Debunking Centuries of Anti-

Catholic History, he methodically presents the fallacy of these and other statements about the church. What is particularly interesting is Professor Stark is not a Catholic. In this book he purposely supports his research by citing from the best historians in each of the areas he discusses. The book, while thorough in the presentation of facts not hearsay, is easy to read. No doubt many non-Catholics, and especially scholars, will read this because of Professor Stark’s reputation. As Catholics, we should read it for his great defense of our faith. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings.

Acts 2:14, 22–23, 1 Pt 1:17–21, Lk 24:13–35

Discouragement and exhaustion are familiar to many of us. When we are young, we are full of life, vigor, hopes, and dreams. But the challenges of life can lead us down rough and narrow streets with few exits. When a fresh hope—an opportunity or a new love—appears but doesn’t pan out, we are even more discouraged than be-fore. The two disciples returning home were convinced Jesus was the Messiah, but it doesn’t seem to be. Jesus isn’t surprised by their dissolution. He catches up to them and takes an interest in their story. When he asks, “What things?” they unburden their hearts, and Jesus listens and cares. With their eyes blinded, they do not recognize their companion. Their faith is dead, their hope is dimmed, their love is cold. The mystery of the cross makes no sense without an experience of the resurrection. They sim-

ply can’t understand why it had to be this way. Arriving in Emmaus, their newfound friend needs to go on. But they insist, as should we in our prayer, “Stay with us!” We need God’s presence to enlighten our faith, rekindle our hope, and inflame our love. Jesus accepts; there is nothing he wants more. He has promised to be with us, and we need to be with him. Jesus offers us his presence not for a moment but for an eternity. The tapestry of Pieter van Aelst depicts this scene at the precise mo-ment of the disciples realizing who Jesus is. Meditate on what this moment says to you.

For Reflection Am I discouraged with God in some area of my life? Talk through these areas in prayer. It was necessary that the Messiah suffer. Do I accept suffering? Am I willing to die with Christ to live with him?
