Editors RANT!
Spot the difference with these two logos!
Yes, this all yellow thing is supposed to be the new recognisable logo for our great organisa-
tion! WHY!!
This will mean huge cost to Rotarians & Rotary Clubs due to clothing, paperwork, banners etc, etc, having to be changed —— I understand that it probably cost some £10,000 (or dollars) for some overpaid ‘designer’ to come up with this radical design! - if that amount is correct;-
WHY??
This money could have supplied a huge amount of Polio vaccinations—it could have

supplied a huge number of folk with Jaipur Limbs—it could have paid for loads of mosquito
nets or a stack of Shelter boxes—it would have been far better used by Rotary Foundation—
PLEASE don't tell me it wasn't charity money & that the money came from ‘a different pot’ —All
Rotary money comes in through the efforts of Rotarians around the world.
As the person who designed the brilliant Phoenix logo for this club, I probably would have done a better job or told them not to bother and either way would have DONATED THE (alleged) £10,000 TO Rotary Charities but to just change the logo to a gold colour (which won’t even show
up properly on a white background) is absolutely disgraceful)
Come on all you Assistant DG’s - DGs - past DGs & Rotarians in the UK - USA - India - Australia and Europe who read this Birdy —if you agree with me let the powers that be know of our feel-ings.
Whilst I am on this subject, just who was on the committee that gave permission to spend money on such a lame project, have they never heard of—
IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT! Maybe they should put whatever it cost into Rotary Founda-tion out of their own pockets
I stress this is a personal view and as it says on the front of this epistle ‘the comments of the Editor may
not be the feelings of the whole of the Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix.’
Yours sincerely; 32 years a member, now known as Angry of Swindon!
Golds! (Whew! got that off me chest!)
I will be delighted to print the comments that any of the Birdy readers have on this sub-
ject.
I am also sending this issue to the editor of the Rotary Magazine
in RIBI - so you could also send emails to; [email protected]
YES
INDEED!
To those who are going this coming Sunday.
Our guests from CALM will be arriving from 11am
The weather is going to be OK (so the weather man says) & I am envisaging about 60 people of all ages (CALM & Rotary). If you have a kite in the garage or in the loft why not bring it along, there will be experts available to help you, in fact why not buy a new one, Argos have them from £10.00 to £20.00, Toys R Us have a good one at £12.99, there are probably more places around that sell them, it’s good fun & healthy, don’t forget we are aiming to give a
few hours enjoyment for some deserving families.
Foodwise, The Co-op at Wroughton have donated the Rolls (thank you Liam) we are buying the Sausages, Burgers,
Onions, Sauces & some cold drinks.
If you wish to bring a flask (thermos or hip) you are most welcome plus any more food that you may want to consume (or share). Think of this as an outdoor party, no money will pass hands
we are just aiming to have a good day out & put some smiles on people’s faces.
Assistance will be needed to drive the 2 BBQs & clear away at the end of the Kite Flying
at approx 2.30.
Finally,
Accesses to Barbury Country Park, The British Heart Foundation have their Half Marathon on
the same day.
If you live in Marlborough Road (as we do) you can only go east bound to Coate Water & then to-wards Marlborough turning right at the ESSO Filling Station at Chiseldon, then straight on in a
Wroughton direction where it’s signposted.

A while ago now Rotarian Gail brought forward the opportunity for the Club to sponsor Lydiard Park Academy to the tune of £200.00 to give the four schoolhous- es a competition opportunity to raise money for charity to which the club happily agreed, here Gail explains the workings; Lydiard Park Academy is split up into four houses and each will be tasked to make as much money as they can from the initial stake of £50 donated by Phoenix Rotary. Outset, a local charity that run free courses for people that are looking to start up their own business is going to go into the school and give the students advice and help them draw up a business plan. Each house will choose a charity to which their profits will go to. The initial £50 stake money per house will transfer to the following years classes and therefore be an on-going project for the Academy It will be called the ‘Phoenix enterprise scheme.’ Gail adds;- I thought it may be an idea if we got them a trophy that could be presented to the winning house each year? What do u think? Gail xx Golds adds; I think a trophy will be a great idea too! If I get approval from the Club I will contact Vince Ayris for something suitable (I know Vince reads this Birdy too, y’know!)

Hi—Its that time of year again (Its Skittle time)
the 1st game is away at the Elliot at South Cerney for 7.30 on the 22nd Oct. We need 8 players its a very good fun night.
Thanks Andy (sports officer)
Andy,
I would like to be considered for selection for this first match. My recent training for the Swindon Half Marathon means I am lean, mean and a skittling machine.
Bizarrely enough, the Elliot in South Cerney is where I took Gina on our very first date (many years ago) - so it ob-viously is a lucky location for me.
When the going gets tough, the tough go skittling. Will there be chunky chips and sandwiches available on the night !!??
Geoff
Hi Andy
I'm available if selected. Nigel.

Miscellaneous Club Items (cont.)
Hi All
As you know, President Peter is supporting Prostate Cancer Charities this year and to help raise funds to-wards this, he has asked for the club members to get engaged in MOVEMBER 2013. (Ladies please read on.....)
I briefly mentioned this at Club on Wednesday evening, and have now attached a sponsor form and a poster to help you get those much needed sponsorships in supporting you growing your facial hair for the month of November. (the male model has given his approval......please read on)
President Peter will kick this off as of the last club meeting of October (Wed 30th) and will be asking you all the come along on the 20th November when we have a partners night and a guest speaker from U-Care who will be speaking about Prostate Cancer, as the there will be a prize for the best dressed beard and/or moustache and for the person who has raised the most sponsorship.....:-)
But LADIES, you haven't got away with it yet, we don't expect you to participate, and wouldn't want you too, but please pass this onto any male friends you have and get them to participate. You can bring them along on the 20th (for £16) or just bring a vali- dated photo of their manly growth and they can be in-cluded in the competition.
Lets make this fun fun fun !!!!! YEAH!
Thanks in advance for your support to President Pete and Jan.

WOMEN WHO KNOW THEIR PLACE
Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Af-
ghan conflict.
She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.
She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the op-pressive Taliban regime the women now seem happy to maintain the old custom.
Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?."
The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, "Land mines."
Moral of the story: no matter what language you speak or where you go, behind every man there's a smart woman

Q. If you were pregnant for two years, what would you give birth to? A. Paul Lynde: Whatever it is, it would never be afraid of the dark.. Q. According to Ann Landers, is there anything wrong with getting into the habit of kissing a lot of people? A. Charley Weaver: It got me out of the army. Q. Back in the old days, when Great Grandpa put horseradish on his head, what was he trying to do? A. George Gobel: Get it in his mouth. Q. Who stays pregnant for a longer period of time, your wife or your elephant? A. Paul Lynde: Who told you about my elephant? Q. Jackie Gleason recently revealed that he firmly believes in them and has actually seen them on at least two occasions. What are they? A. Charley Weaver: His feet. Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed? A. Paul Lynde: Point and laugh

At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, 'Do you un-derstand what coop-eration is? What a
team is?' The little boy nodded in the affirmative.
'Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?'
The little boy nodded 'yes'.
'So,' the coach continued, 'I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the um-pire, or call him a pecker-head, di*khead or a**hole. Do you under-stand all that? '
The little boy nodded 'yes' again.
He continued, 'And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play too, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach "a dumb ass or sh*thead" is it?'
The little boy shook his head 'NO'.
'GOOD', said the coach . . . 'Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother!
WONDERFULLY BRITISH !
English Stiff Upper Lip On a train from London to Man-chester an Australian was berating the Englishman sitting across from him in the compartment. "You English are too stuffy. You set yourselves apart too much. You think your stiff upper lip makes you above the rest of us. Look at me... I'm ME! I have Italian blood, Greek blood, a little Irish blood, and some Aborigi-ne blood. What do you say to that ?" The Englishman replied, "Awfully
sporting of your mother, old chap!"
Thanks Lillian in OZ for both of
these

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of
service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to
encourage and foster:
1)The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for
service;
2) High ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful
occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation
as an opportunity to serve society;
3) The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s
personal, business, and community life;
4) The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace through a world fellowship of business and profes-
sional persons united in the ideal of service.
