Rotary Year

22nd April 2017

Club Meeting 15/03/17

This week’s host was Tony Horn who hadhoped to link with a Rotary colleague in Francewho unfortunately had been delayed by thestorms in America. Despite checking thetechnology on arrival, it failed to work after themeal despite the help from Chris Sims.

After a conventional grace the menu was PeaSoup followed by braised Lamb Shoulder withmashed potato and roasted vegetables.

As there were a number of new memberspresent Tony reprised a précised job talk andalso spoke about some of the technologies thatcould be used to move Rotary into the 21st

Century.

· Joined Rotary in 1988 whilst he was aBarclays Bank Manager joining theRotary Club of SwindonThamesdown. Needed to be ap-proved by the other Bank manager inthe club the recently departed PeterWoodward.

· Bounced into being Club Secretary in1990 and served for four and a halfyears, by which time then became

Page 3: weekly€bulle n The Birdy’thephoenixbulletin.weebly.com/.../birdy_240_by_chris.pdf · 2019. 10. 23. · The Birdy ’ Immediate Past ... sick, study your lessons and after you’ve

President Nominee or Junior Vice President as it was known in those days.· President in 1996/7, when I first encountered our Rotary friends from the Rotary Club of

Foothills Highlands and other clubs in the Sacramento area when they attended the Presiden-tial Ball. Had the privilege to America in 1999 with the Parsons, Woodwards, Goldsworthys,Jefferies, Collises, Parsons, John Cole and Brian Golding.

· Proud of the activities the club was involved with which included:o Great Train Rides of 1991 and 1996. This was an activity where clubs from three Dis-

tricts took disadvantaged Children for the day to Weston Super Mare many who hadnever been to the seaside before. One of our members also ensured they received a giftfrom the local toyshop. Clubs from Didcot, Wantage, Witney, Swindon, Chippenham andBath participated in this project. It was cheaper hiring the train from Great Western in1996 than it was from British Rail in 1991.

o Joined with ardiff clubs in a Convoy of Hope to Croatia. Brian Golding, the late PeterWinton and Steve Davidson took Brian’s 7.5ton lorry full of blankets and I believe sugaron the trip.

o Settng up the Life Education Centre where we worked in partnership with Nationwide,BT and Burmah to fund a mobile unit which toured schools (usually primary schools)making children aware of healthy eating and the danger of addictions whether they becoffee, sugar or drugs. Charity ceased in 2014 when Swindon BC withdrew funding forthe Educator.

· Had taken redundancy from Barclays Bank in 1993 having been on secondment at Great West-ern Enterprise as a business counsellor and running the Start-Up Business programme.

· Worked at Wiltshire Training and Enterprise Council until their demise in 2001 when I movedto Business Link as a Contracts Manger, where I stayed in various guises of the company untilSeptember 2014.

· Then ran my own Business Consultancy until becoming District Governor of Rotary District1100 from July 15 – June 16.

· 2001 marriage broke up, and I met Jacqui the same year. Jacqui moved in in March 2003 andwe were married in September 2005 four months before Jacqui’s son Dom was married in Ja-maica in January 2006.

· Jacqui has been a tremendous support in Rotary and she was approached whether I would be-come the first person to be President twice in 2007/8.

· Club activities included continuing with the Life Education Centres and working with the Cher-nobyl Lifeline Charity to work with the Rotary Club of Minsk Ratusha to provide a mini bus totake the children from the Chernobyl area which was deemed safe to the local hospitals.

· With Jacqui became an Assistant District Governor in 2009-10.· In that year met Stefano Paola who was the team leader of the visiting GSE team from Pied-

mont. We hosted him and he invited us to stay with him in 2011. Whilst staying went to a Ro-tary meeting in Genoa where the 12 Clubs were celebrating the completion of a project withthe Moroccan government to persuade then to invest in an inoculation programme for Talla-massie (sickle-cell) disease that would be endemic around the Southern Mediterranean if itwere not for the programme. First time where I had been to a meeting held in two differentlanguages, neither of which I understood, but seeing coverage from three Television Stationsand two Radio Stations as the programme was communicated to the Moroccan groups inGenoa. This was my “Rotary Moment” in understanding the power of Rotary worldwide.

· In 2011-12 acted as District Conference Treasurer, when there was a one-day Conference inBristol together with a showcase of Rotary projects on the Sunday. The Conference attractedmore Rotarians but fewer partners and of course you would have though Grumpy had organ-ised the Festival of Rotary as it rained on the Sunday.

Page 4: weekly€bulle n The Birdy’thephoenixbulletin.weebly.com/.../birdy_240_by_chris.pdf · 2019. 10. 23. · The Birdy ’ Immediate Past ... sick, study your lessons and after you’ve

· Then went through the process of obtaining the nomination for District Governor in 15-16having narrowly missed out in the elections for 2014-15.

· Referred to the formation of Phoenix, in particular where we set a target to attract 10 new Ro-tarians in a four-month period. The moral being if you really want to do something you can.

· Passionate about diversity in Rotary, still believe we have no real leadership to recruit morewomen members and embrace flexibilities to encourage younger members. Very proud we arenow working with the Hindu community locally in Swindon.

· Have embraced e Rotary. Using a platform called Zoom where you can get up to 100 people online anywhere in the world at any time. Have joined a number of meetings with high -poweredspeakers. I see this platform as a way forward for attracting busy people. I had hoped to showsome examples of the meetings but the technology let me down in the hotel.

Tony answered questions. The main difficulty being how EClubs vet potential members. With use of theonline meetings you get to meet people, they apply to join the same way as any conventional club and inreality you are still getting personal recommendations to join. The meeting concluded we all have differentviewpoints but recognised no one-way fits all.

Lynne proposed the vote of thanks.

During the technology fracas, KNYBP day, the Jaipur Limb project and the Dragon Boat day werediscussed.

The meeting closed at 9.20 p.m.

Why is this week’s Birdy so late ?

Well first the host report was late, then alongwith a number of my fellow rotarians andpartners I atttended the FOYCS Ball onSaturday evening. Sunday morning was a littleslow with brunch at the Chop House in OldTown, then I needed a little nap……

Lynne Harper has a new ‘friend’, whom webelieve is called Hayden. Lynne stood upwell under the constant questioning overdinner this week.

All we know is that the new friend is calledHayden. I’ve attached pictures of a few wellknow people called Hayden.

PS The initial gossip was supplied byRotarian Nicki Horn.

From: Ian Price

Dear Nicole

What a night , we managed to raise in total just over £30k which is fantastic .

Yet again the Barrel of goodies went down really well and raised £1100 which is a fantastic amount ofmoney !

Can you thank everyone as without their very kind , and interesting donations , we would not raise thisamount of money .

As you know every penny we raise goes to supporting the Young Carers in Swindon.

The support that you and your fellow Rotarians give Friends of Young Carers Swindon is reallyappreciated .

Once again thank you , I would be grateful if you could pass this email on to all of the club .

Jokes

‘on the Birdy’s wing’

Words for TeenagersNorthland college principal John Tapene has offered the following words from a judge who regularly dealswith youth.

“Always we hear the cry from teenagers, ‘what can we do, where can we go?’”

“My answer is this : Go home, mow he lawn, wash the windows, learn to cook, build a raft, get a job, visit thesick, study your lessons and after you’ve finished, read a book. Your town does not owe you recreationalfacilities and your parents do not owe you fun.”

“The world does not owe you a living, you owe the world something. You owe it your time, enery and talent sothat no one will be at war, in sickness and lonely again.”

In other words grow up, stop being a cry baby, get out of your dream world and develop a backbone not awishbone. Start behaving like a responsible person. You are important and you are needed. It’s too late to sitaround and wait for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and that somebody is you.
