Eighth grade students in the United States received a collective “F” in their knowledge of U.S. history, geography, and civics, according to the Nation’s Report Card issued this spring by the National Assessment of Education Progress. These results were, sadly, unsurprising to those of us familiar with the challenging trends in education. Increased standardized testing and shifting national priorities have largely consigned social studies to the back burner in many elementary and middle schools. One
need only watch the deteriorated level of national discourse in order to understand how critical civil dialogue and confli t resolution are to addressing the complex problems our children are confronting and will confront in the future. Discovering Justice helps solves these problems by providing elementary and middle school teachers with the proper tools to return civics to their classrooms in a meaningful, engaging way.
The 2014-2015 fisca year was a period of success as well as transition for Discovering Justice. Our programs reached an
unprecedented 24,073 individuals—including 20,835 students through our flagshi Children Discovering Justice curriculum. After seven years of adept and enthusiastic leadership, Elisabeth Medvedow stepped down as Executive Director. Lissy guided Discovering Justice through the 2008 financia crisis and its aftermath, brought our programs districtwide in Gateway Cities as well as in Cambridge and Watertown, and tirelessly advocated for quality civic education for all children. We are grateful for the strong path she forged, and we look forward to continued success under our new Executive Director Jon Spack. Over the last 16 years, Jon has focused on leading education nonprofit to scale through fundraising, mobilizing volunteers, and building boards of directors. He was previously the Vice President of Development for Education Pioneers and prior to that, Chief Growth Officer at San Francisco-based Spark. Before Spark, Jon worked in Boston and in San Jose at Citizen Schools.
Starting in kindergarten, Discovering Justice provides the resources necessary to dramatically improve eighth grade civic proficien y. I am confide t that Jon’s energy and record of success in growing educational nonprofit will bring the benefit of our programs to even more students, transforming individual lives and building stronger communities in Massachusetts and across the nation. Please join us in these critical efforts.
With warm regards,
Deborah S. Birnbach Board Chair
“I am honored to lead Discovering Justice, a recognized leader in K-8 civic education. Through our partnerships with school districts, lawyers, judges, and teachers, we are bridging the civic opportunity gap with dynamic programming at the Moakley U.S. Courthouse and in classrooms across Massachusetts.”
– Jon Spack, Executive Director

A nonprofi leader in civic education that prepares young
people to value the justice system, realize the power of their
own voices, and embrace civic responsibility by connecting classrooms and courtrooms
Discovering the Bill of Rights draws middle school students into the midst of the judicial process. In real courtrooms, students learn about the Bill of Rights and the appellate process, then develop and present appellate arguments based on landmark Supreme Court cases before lawyers presiding as judges. This 90-minute fiel trip challenges students to think critically, advocate for their “client,” and consider opposing arguments.
Discovering JusticeRIGHTSTHE BILL OFDISCOVERING
Courthouse Tours of the Moakley U.S. Courthouse afford the public the opportunity to learn about the court system and the history, art, and architecture
of this magnifi ent building from volunteer docents. The tour demystifie the justice system and shows visitors that courthouses truly belong to the public.

Stand Up for Your Rights, offered in the spring, transforms middle school students into appellate lawyers. Working with a team of volunteer attorneys for 11 weeks, students delve into the Bill of Rights, explore how constitutional protections apply in public schools, and argue their cases in real courtrooms before Appellate Panels composed of actual judges and experienced attorneys.
The Mock Trial Program, offered in the fall, is an 11-week afterschool experiential learning program during which middle school students become trial lawyers. With the support of volunteer attorneys, students tackle age-appropriate legal issues, engage in legal analysis, and ultimately try cases in real courtrooms before federal or state judges and juries made up of community members.
Children Discovering Justice (CDJ) is a literacy-based social studies curriculum for elementary
and middle school, that provides students with the tools to understand sophisticated ideas such as democracy, tolerance, rights, responsibilities, and the connection between rules and law. CDJ includes interactive mock trials that further empower children to stand up for their beliefs, engage in respectful discourse, and resolve differences in constructive ways.
![Page 4: Discovering Justicediscoveringjustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Annual...Discovering Justice is proud to introduce the revised and expanded second edition of the Children Discovering](https://reader030.vdocuments.site/reader030/viewer/2022040514/5e6b642721467a0a3e39ffde/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Discovering Justice is proud to introduce the revised and expanded
second edition of the Children Discovering Justice curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grade (with seventh and eighth grades in development).
CDJ empowers students to see different viewpoints, respectfully convey their thoughts, stand up for their beliefs, and resolve differences in constructive ways. By connecting children’s innate sense of fairness with classroom lessons, CDJ builds stronger school communities and helps children believe in their own potential for success.
The second edition of the CDJ curriculum:
Uses children’s literature to teach social studies concepts and skills such as critical thinking and problem solving
Includes interactive mock trials or mock appellate arguments at every grade level so students can experience justice in action
Provides opportunities for debate, voting, community service learning, and other hands-on projects
Promotes a positive school culture
Aligns with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and the MA Curriculum Frameworks for History and Social Science

Students explore this idea by:
Mixing ingredients to create colors that refle t the racial diversity within the classroom
Mapping their neighborhood and comparing it to others around the world
Assembling a class book of students’ understandings of peace
Drawing pictures to explain the preamble to the Constitution
— 5 —
It Begins with You, the kindergarten curriculum, introduces the idea that as citizens of a community, we all have a responsibility to help create safe and peaceful places for work and play.

Through engaging narratives and informational texts, students explore:
Bullying, and how to address it
Courageous responses to pressure
Acts of bravery in the struggle for justice
The creation and purpose of the Constitution of the United States
A rule-breaking problem brought to court as students conduct the trial of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Justice for All, the second grade curriculum, tackles big ideas: justice, equality, liberty, and freedom.
Students’ understanding of justice grows by:
Exploring what happens when people feel the need to challenge laws
Building a word web to connect examples of justice and equality
Reading about Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Thurgood Marshall, and a fi tional little girl named Grace, who wants to be the firs female president
Learning the meaning of patriotic symbols and holidays including the American fla and the Fourth of July
Participating in a mock trial to determine the ownership of a beloved teddy bear

Rights and Responsibilities, the third grade curriculum, asks students to look deeply at their own rights and responsibilities as well as the rights that our government protects and the responsibility it has to govern justly.
Through literature-based activities, students:
Examine the roles of colonial English and Native American children in the 1600s and compare them to their own
Explore the causes and effects of the events that led to the American Revolution
Learn the underlying principles of the Declaration of Independence
Study the life and work of Phillis Wheatley, the firs published African American poet
Re-enact the trial of British soldiers in the aftermath of the Boston Massacre

Out of Many, One, the fourth grade curriculum, focuses on immigration to the United States: why people move, how they form communities, and the impact of geography on people’s lives.
As students develop an understanding of geographic movements across borders, they:
Study regions of the United States and explore how geographic factors impact people’s lives
Learn how to read and create maps
Bring story characters to life as they enact a mock immigration trial
Act out a Naturalization Ceremony
Analyze political cartoons
Read and write poetry about the immigrant experience
Invent a fi tional country

Solving Problems: The United States Constitution,
the fi th grade curriculum, examines the creation of the
Constitution and the ideals and principles it sets forth.
To explore how groups solve problems, students:
Identify the compromises and the structures established in the Constitution to protect the balance of power
Brainstorm problem-solving strategies using historical examples
Examine the internment of Japanese Americans as a negative example of problem solving
Analyze the Bill of Rights
Take part in a criminal mock trial involving a case of stolen property
Address a local problem through community service

Exploring Constitutional Rights around the World, the sixth grade curriculum, takes students to seven regions outside of North America to explore the histories, governments, cultures, geographies, and constitutions of different nations. As students take intellectual journeys through their studies, they:
Explore Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Iraq, South Africa, and Ukraine
Examine the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution
Argue a landmark Supreme Court case about the constitutional rights of students in public schools through Discovering the Bill of Rights (DBR)
Create regional and world maps
Debate the merits of rights found in other constitutions but not in the U.S. Constitution
[Through the DBR fiel trip,] my kids were actually able to see how the justice system works ... they got to see that their opinions mattered. To have young students like that appreciated and valued and taken seriously was such a joy.

My favorite moment [of the Mock Trial Program] – hands down – was when the verdict was delivered. Not only because it was in my team’s favor, but because of the feeling I got knowing that I had defended my client to the best of my ability. That feeling that I got is just unexplainable, and I would give anything to have it again.
Alyana Cruz Stoklosa Middle School, Lowell
If I was asked to say one thing I took away from [Stand Up], it is professionalism. Your words are only as profound as you allow them to be.
Bryan Quinonez, Boston Collegiate Charter School
With The Mock Trial Program in the fall
and our mock appellate program Stand Up for Your Rights in the spring, student attorneys have the extraordinary opportunity to experience the progression of a case through the
justice system. Through the guidance of volunteer attorneys and over a period of 11 or 22 weeks, students prepare their cases and gain the confiden e and skills required to argue on behalf of their clients.
![Page 13: Discovering Justicediscoveringjustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Annual...Discovering Justice is proud to introduce the revised and expanded second edition of the Children Discovering](https://reader030.vdocuments.site/reader030/viewer/2022040514/5e6b642721467a0a3e39ffde/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Moakley U.S. Courthouse, many groups stay to meet with a federal judge or attorney. Groups also have the opportunity to observe trials and other court proceedings, attend naturalization ceremonies, and view the art on display in the building.

The [Courthouse Tours] program allows students to witness firsthan something they may never see again, and for that I am beyond thankful. What your program
does is an incredible task, but pulling it off means educating students like me about one of the most special, most carefully thought-out systems in our country.
