Provincial New Democratsare applauding the move byDelta council to have the contro-versial Southlands property inTsawwassen placed back in the
Agricultural Land Reserve.Council this week unanimously
approved sending the recom-mendations for a new area plan, written by CAO George Harvie,to a March 1 public hearing. Themost surprising proposal is toapply to the Agricultural Land
Commission to have the 538-acreSouthlands put back in the ALR.The Southlands is zoned agricul-tural and in the regional district’sGreen Zone.
Supporting the move, the NDPsay a growing population and agrowing appetite for local food
are both good reasons to returnthe Southlands to the ALR.
A recent auditor general’sreport shows that under the B.C.Liberals, the amount of land inthe ALR on the south coast hasdeclined by eight per cent despitethe region’s growing population
and growing interest in local food, according to the NDP.

The dumping of largequantities of fill in Deltahighlights the AgriculturalLand Commission’s lack ofresources to protect farm-land, says Coun. Ian Paton.
The first farmer ina quarter century to beelected to council last year,Paton joined a chorus ofconcern by local farmersthat Delta’s agriculturalland is being abused by thedumping of soil and mate-rial from uncertain sources.
“The land commis-sion only has two bylawenforcing officers forthe entire province, that’show strapped they are forfunding,” Paton told theOptimist.
The issue has beenbrought to the forefrontlately with fill dumping tak-ing place at a property on104th Street in East Delta. The ALC approved thedeposit of 300,000 squaremetres of soil on the prop-erty as a non-farm use withconditions to include regu-lar monitoring by a profes-sional agroligist.
Delta’s agricultural advi-sory committee, however, isconcerned about the qualityand suitability of the mate-rial being deposited andsought clarification regard-ing what monitoring is tak-ing place.
Mayor Lois Jackson sug-gested both the ALC andmunicipal enforcementefforts be charged back toproponents in the case of
large-scale projects such asthe East Delta property thatrequires a higher level ofsupervision.
“I’ve made a suggestionto our agricultural advisorycommittee in Delta and toour planning departmentis that any time they getpermit applications forsoil deposits for agricul-tural land that they shouldconsult with members ofour agricultural advisorycommittee. We’re long timefarmers and pretty muchknow what’s going on allthe farms,” said Paton.
While there are somelegitimate reasons to allowdumping fill on farmland, there are also abuses takingplace, he said.
“Some guys may havebought cheap farmland tomake some money off ofit by taking in fill mate-
rial. Some of the fill mate-rial, we don’t know wherethe hell it’s coming from.Excavation sites in down-town Vancouver, whatever, and someof thisstuff mightbe toxic, for all weknow.”
A reportby the audi-tor generallast yearcontaineda scathingassessmentof the land commission’sability to effectively preventnon-compliance on land inthe ALR.
The report found thatsince 2002/03, the budgetfor the ALC has decreasedalmost $3 million, to justover $2 million, while the
workload has grown. The new chair of the
ALC, Richard Bullock, was tasked by the Ministryof Agriculture to come up
with his ownreport onissues regard-ing the com-mission andALR.
Bullockrecently metwith Deltacouncillors ata workshopat municipalhall, a meet-
ing where the dumping offill was a main topic. Patonsaid he was encouragedBullock seemed determinedto strengthen the abilitiesof the commission to havebetter control over the prob-lem.
Delta farmers will act
as eyes and ears for themunicipality to keep tabson property owners tryingto get away with illegaldumping in the meantime, said Paton, who recentlyjoined Metro Vancouver’sagriculture committee.
That committee’s chair,Richmond Coun. HaroldSteves, agrees the ALC’slack of monitoring andenforcement capabilities aregiving the green light foragricultural landowners inDelta and elsewhere to tryto get away with dumpingmass amounts of fill.
“We’ve have had unend-ing problems with illegalfill (in Richmond). The landcommission is understaffedafter it had its budget cutdramatically, so they onlyhave one or two people tolook after fill matters forthe entire province, which is
ludicrous.”Steves said last year he
received a tip that illegalfill was being dumped on asmall acreage in Richmond.Carrying a camera, he per-sonally followed a dumptruck to a parcel in theALR. Surprisingly, whenhe followed the truck to thesource of the fill, it turnedout to be grinded old black-top from a road construc-tion project contracted byhis city.
“It calls for personalvigilance and calls for localbylaw officers to be on theirtoes as well. I’m sure thereare more operations I don’tknow about,” said Steves.
He noted some prop-erty owners want to cashin on tipping fees of up to$100 per truck by allow-ing dumping of all kinds ofmaterial on farmland.
agricultural land to feedmore people,” said NewDemocrat agriculturecritic Lana Popham. “TheSouthlands is key to build-ing our agriculture industryin the Lower Mainland andmeeting the demands of agrowing population that’sincreasingly hungry forlocal food.”
Delta North MLAGuy Gentner said, “TheSouthlands have great farm-ing capability. Returningthe Southlands to the ALRwould be a good firststep towards reversing theloss of farmland that hashappened under the B.C.Liberals.”
The move by council willonce again bring up thedebate about the viabilityof soil-based farming onthe property that has had along history of controversy, but this time it would be theALC that will make a deter-mination.
Formerly called theSpetifore land when farmerGeorge Spetifore owned it,the property was removedamid much controversyfrom the ALR in 1981. Therequest was put forwardby Delta council and theGreater Vancouver RegionalDistrict.
The Social Credit gov-ernment issued the cabinet
decision overruling theALC at the time. Out ofmore than 8,200 acres ofland in B.C. pulled out ofthe ALR during that period, the commission opposedonly Spetifore’s parcel, theOptimist reported at thetime.
In an interview in 1981,Spetifore cited severalreasons for the exclusion, including poor soil quality. He said the land was clas-sified by the ALC in thelower soil ratings and healso pointed out the prop-erty was in a salt area builtup from the Strait of Juande Fuca.
A report by agrobiologistNorman Putnam, hired bySpetifore, noted “extensivedrainage and irrigation
facilities would have to beadded” before the land wasviable for farming.
However,a report byMarshall A.Cronkhite in1989, duringthe highlycontentiousTDL hous-ing proposalfor the prop-erty, statedtests “showa viable eco-nomic farmunit could bedeveloped onthe property.”
In the early ‘90s, theNDP government declinedDelta council’s request toput the Southlands back
in the ALR. The DeltaFarmers’ Institute at thetime voiced opposition to
council’srequest,arguing theland wasn’tsuitable forfarming.
In a let-ter thisweek tocouncil,CenturyGroup pres-ident SeanHodginscontendedHarvie’ssugges-
tion staff investigate andreport back on options forimproved irrigation anddrainage was made without
noting the fact Delta hashad two decades to fix thedumping of storm waterfrom upper Tsawwassenthrough the Southlands, butnothing was done.
“We welcome havingstaff investigate and reportback, as a basis for furtherdiscussion about agricul-tural viability in general, although I suspect that theresults will not change any-thing, given the millionsof dollars that anything butsuperficial improvementswould require,” he said.
It remains to be seen ifthe land commission wouldaccept all of the property oronly part of it for the ALR,leaving more questionmarks about the future ofwhatever could be left over.

They’ll be digging deepin Delta to heat someschools in the district.
Pipes for geothermalsystems will be buriedunder playing fields at 11local schools as part of a$6.9-million, 35-projectdeal across the provinceinvolving Terasen Gas andB.C.’s Public Sector EnergyConservation Agreementfund.
The Delta school districthas been pushing to makethe projects happen in orderto reduce energy costs andgreenhouse gas emissions.
“This means we can usemore money for educationand other important things,”said school board chairDale Saip.
In a so-called geo-
exchange system, wateris pumped through buriedpipes to heat or cool abuilding, depending on theseason.
Seven sites in SouthDelta — Delta and South
Delta secondary schools,English Bluff, NeilsonGrove and South Parkelementary schools, DeltaManor Education Centreand the board office — willhave a geoexchange system
installed sometime overthe next two years. Fourschools in North Delta willalso be included in the pro-gram.
Several South Deltaschools — Ladner, Holly,Cliff Drive and BeachGrove — will have high-efficiency boiler upgradesdone.
Terasen Gas would own, operate and maintain allof the new heat genera-tion equipment and wouldcharge the school district arate approved by the B.C.Utilities Commission.
Terasen Gas estimatesthe total environmentalbenefit of the Delta schooldistrict projects would be anapproximately 55 per centreduction in energy con-sumption and a 69 per centreduction in greenhousegases.
Feed the Bees campaignorganizers are planning togenerate a buzz in the nextfew months.
The joint Delta Chamberof Commerce andEarthwise Society proj-ect, announced last year,is aimed at promoting ahealthy and sustainable beepopulation.
Programs are being puttogether for the spring.
“It’s going to be focusing
on education and awarenessbuilding events, as well assort of a call for action,”said Feed the Bees co-chairand Earthwise Societyexecutive director PatriciaFleming.
The first event is expect-ed to coincide with EarthDay (April 22).
“We’re really trying toget people to plant bee-friendly plants in their gar-dens. We’re going to be let-ting people know just whatthose are,” she said.
Bees are very important
for the viability of manyagricultural crops and a lotof the food we eat dependson pollination in order to beproduced, Fleming said.
She noted that over thelast few years in NorthAmerica and around theworld there’s been a sharpdecline in bee populations.
Chamber board memberIan Tait, who’s also a Feedthe Bees co-chair, said theproject’s website will havedetails posted in the nextfew weeks about upcom-ing events, classes, open
houses, workshops, guestspeakers and possibly adocumentary premiere.
“Look to website formore information as we rollout what we hope to be avery successful program toencourage residents, busi-nesses and organizations toplant flowers, to feed thebees and diversify our pol-linators,” he said.
The project’s website canbe found at www.feedthe-bees.org. A Twitter accounthas been set up at twitter.com/feedthebees.

Delta council gavepreliminary approval thisweek to a zoning bylawthat, if approved, would seemore industrial develop-ment near Boundary BayAirport.
Council is consideringan application to extendthe light industrial andwarehousing area at theairport to allow for con-struction of an auto partswarehouse and distributionoperation on a one-acresite at the southwest cornerof the property.
In 2009, councilapproved an amendmentto the municipally-ownedairport’s zoning to allowpart of the site to havemore than just airport andaircraft-related businesses. The amendment redesig-nated land for a range oflight industrial and busi-ness park uses.
The area had previouslybeen zoned for aviationuses except for a small sec-tion that was designatedfor farming and is in theAgricultural Land Reserve.
The first developmentunder the new zoning, B.C.Fresh, a vegetable distribu-
tion facility, has alreadybeen constructed.
According to a staffreport, Alpha Aviation, which leases the airportfrom Delta, has startednegotiations with TGLHoldings Ltd. The compa-ny, which would sub-leasethe property, is proposinga building for a combina-tion of aircraft hangar andaviation uses, an auto partswarehouse and distributionoperation with display/retail of goods and office.
The rezoning proposalwill go to a public hearingbefore being considered forfinal approval.
A local charity will begetting some airtime thisweekend on the annualVariety Show of HeartsTelethon.
Autism Support Dogs, acompanion charity to B.C.Guide Dog Services, whichis based in Ladner, receivedsignificant financial sup-port from Variety — TheChildren’s Charity follow-ing last year’s telethon. Thecharitable organization con-tributed $50,000 towardsthe funding of four autismsupport dogs.
Breeding, raising, train-ing and placing one dogcosts about $37,000, but areprovided free to families.
“Thanks to the help fromlast year’s telethon, we hadour best year so far, placinga total of seven dogs withqualified families,” said BillThornton, chief executiveofficer of Autism SupportDogs. “We’re the only oneof our kind in WesternCanada, and we have aquickly-growing waiting listof families who would real-ly benefit from the help ourdogs provide. Without thesupport of Variety — TheChildren’s Charity, this listwould have been even lon-ger than it already is.”
A North Delta familyreceived the first autismservice dog from B.C.Guide Dog Services threeyears ago.
In March 2008, Max
Harding, then five yearsold, was matched withForest, a Labrador retrieverand the first autism servicedog trained by the organiza-tion.
Autism service dogs stayattached to an autistic childvia a belt around the child’swaist.
The dogs do not guidethe child, as a guide dogdoes for a blind person, butthe canines can help keepautistic children and indi-viduals calm and safe.
When the family is out,Forest is right there withMax, mom Kim Hardingtold the Optimist just afterthe family received the dog.
“There are so many great
charities that are funded byVariety — The Children’sCharity, and we really hopethat the public watch thisyear’s event and give fromtheir hearts in order to sup-port them all,” Thorntonsaid. “We wish the telethonevery success again thisyear.”

The board of the LittleHouse Society announcedthis week that two promi-nent South Delta citizens,Doug Husband and LeslieAbramson, would head upthe committee in charge ofraising $225,000 over thenext five months.
The Little House Societywas established at therequest of the Corporationof Delta to oversee the run-ning of a small house on12th Avenue in Tsawwassenas a meeting place forrecovery groups. The homehad been purchased byDelta in 1984 so that itmight be a place for peopledealing with drug and alco-hol addiction and for theirfamily members to partici-pate in supportive recoverymeetings.
After fire destroyed thehouse in 2009, the society’sboard decided it would notonly rebuild the house tobe a meeting and trainingfacility for recovery andcommunity groups, it alsobroadened its mandate toinclude the development, implementation and evalua-tion of education strategies
related to substance abuse, addiction and recovery. These strategies are for dif-ferent target populations:individuals, youth, retirees, families, small businesses, larger employers and thecommunity at large.
“As a life-long memberof this community and hav-ing been involved in civicpolitics for many years, when I first heard aboutthis project, I immediatelysaw the need for somethinglike it in South Delta,” said
Husband, a former mayorof Delta.
“Alcohol and drug addic-tion is a growing problemin our community, just likeit is in all Canadian com-munities. I really believeif we can provide the righteducation to the rightpeople, we can save lives. Iam confident this is some-thing the good people ofSouth Delta will want to getbehind.”
Abramson agrees, add-ing, “I was impressed by
the calibre of people theLittle House Society boardwas able to bring togetherin order to begin developingunique community strate-gies for educating peopleabout drug and alcoholabuse and their plan to cre-ate a model not only forthe communities of SouthDelta, but for other com-munities to follow as well.I’m truly excited about thepotential good work thatwill be created through therebuilding the little house.”
Statistics Canada reportsone in 10 Canadians,15 years and over, havesymptoms consistent withalcohol or illicit drugdependence. Unfortunately,a large percentage of thoseare unable to find andmaintain lasting recovery.

Issue notput to restquite yet
TEDMURPHY
MURPHY’SLAW
It’s a move intended to put the issue torest once and for all, but there will be allsorts of questions to answer before weever get to that point.
Delta council finally took some deci-sive action on the Southlands this weekby getting the ball rolling on putting thelong contentious piece of Tsawwassenproperty back in the Agricultural LandReserve.
I thought the recommendation in lastfall’s ill-fated Tsawwassen Area Plan tosimply maintain the agricultural designa-tion on the property was asking for yearsof more unrest, so I was ready to giveit to politicians if they endorsed such apolicy. Either stick it in the ALR or workwith the developer to plot its future, butdon’t ignore the issue because you don’twant to get your hands dirty.
The suggestion by CAO GeorgeHarvie to return the land to the ALR,which was given preliminary approval bycouncil and will now go to a public hear-ing as we begin what will undoubtedlybe a lengthy process, provides far greatercertainty, but it also raises some interest-ing questions.
If this was the right thing to do allalong, then why did this council andbureaucracy wait so long? Twenty yearsago the support level for developing theSouthlands would have been in the singledigits, yet now it’s approaching 40 percent based on last year’s municipal mail-out survey. With some modifications toSean Hodgins’ plan, or simply the pas-sage of more time, it’s not inconceivableto, gasp, see a majority actually favourdevelopment.
The move at this time is also curi-ous as it’s unlikely to win Mayor LoisJackson and her slate any political pointsin Tsawwassen, a place where they’venever been too popular. Opponents toSouthlands development will likely con-tinue to support other candidates, whilethe pro-growthers — and remember, there’s a significant number of them— won’t embrace this turn of events.
A pressing question as we move for-ward is who will pay for the drainageand irrigation work that’s clearly neededto make the land viable for farming?Century’s plan would see the developerpay for it with profits from buildinghousing on one-third of the property, butin the absence of that project, it appeartaxpayers would be on the hook, or theland would continue to sit fallow.
Many other questions need to beanswered, including the biggest of all— Will the land commission go for itthis time around? — in a saga that prom-ises not to draw to a conclusion any timesoon.

On Monday night, Delta coun-cil received and debated a newproposed Tsawwassen Area Plan.Whereas the earlier version hadbeen developed by two councillors, senior planners and 12 citizens, andrequired 30 meetings and 11 publicforums, it was withdrawn after twovery heated public evenings. Thisnew version was prepared overthree months by the chief adminis-trative officer, George Harvie, andthree staff. No others commented.
The proposed plan was discussedby council members for an hourand half, and was wholeheart-edly endorsed by them. Now itgoes to public hearing on March1. Congratulations to Harvie, whowas able to do what so many of usfailed to do!
How did this happen so fast, sosmoothly?
First, the degree of change being
proposed is much less than theearlier plan, probably less than 500new units in all of Tsawwassenover its life. Second, no townhomesin Tsawwassen. Third, infill hous-ing, if, where and when desired, will have to be approved one ata time. While building heights inthe town centre are proposed toincrease from four to six storeys, not much activity will take place asthat design is yet to be accepted bybuilders.
Fourth, less than 250 new unitswill be allowed in the town centre.Consequently, growth in this partof South Delta will take place notin Tsawwassen itself, but rather onTsawwassen First Nation lands.
The one major item yet to besorted out is the Southlands. Whilecurrently zoned as agriculture, theplan calls for all of Southlandsto be returned to the AgriculturalLand Reserve (ALR). This rec-ommendation flows from thesurvey of last spring where over60 per cent of the population whoresponded said it should remain asagriculture.
The process to achieve thisinvolves several steps, and willlikely encounter fierce oppositionfrom Century Group, the own-ers and want-to-be-developers of
the 500+ acres. Along with theSouthlands, all the area betweenthe McDonald’s and Highway 17,now in the ALR, will be rezonedagriculture.
How could the CAO and threestaff accomplish in three monthswhat two councillors, two seniorplanners and 12 citizens could notachieve in a year and half? Simple, the rules were changed. Speakingas one who was among the 12 citi-zens, I can tell you the guidelinesand objectives handed to us werenot the same as the CAO had.
Mayor and council backed downafter seeing the chaos last fall.Political expediency, also calledsurvival instinct, was at work here.
Do we have a better plan? If youlike what you have seen aroundyou in the past decade — yes. Ifyou were looking for changes suchas affordable housing or smallerhouses — no.
Do we have challenges? Yes,as the Tsawwassen Area Plan hasnot been updated since 1992, andthere have been many cases of spotrezoning since then. Continuedbypassing of the area plan makesan area plan meaningless.
Let’s ask council to abide bythis new plan — if it passes publicmuster next month.
Plan comes together quicklyonce ground rules change

Letters to the Editor
Editor:Taxpayers are most gen-
erous in their support ofDelta’s farmers.
We provide and maintaindikes to protect farmlandfrom 200-year floods. Weprovide, maintain and oper-ate ditches and pumps todrain farmland and dis-charge winter’s excess overthe dikes.
We provide, maintain andoperate additional pumps tofill ditches with river waterso farmers can irrigate sum-mer crops.
All of this is at little or
no cost to Delta’s farmers. This is all arguably as itshould be. As a community,we support farming.
The Southlands is muchless fortunate. It is behindBoundary Bay, whoseresidents refuse a dike, and separated from Delta’sdrainage and irrigationsystem by Beach Grove. We expect the Southlandsto trust it doesn’t flood, somehow capture and useunreliable and possiblycontaminated surface runofffrom our yards and streets, and find its own drainage
solution.Municipal staff now
recommends: 1) that Deltarequest the Southlands bereturned to the ALR; and 2)that “staff report back withoptions for the provisionof improved irrigation anddrainage services ... consis-tent with other agriculturallands in Delta.”
These seem understand-able, but should the first becontingent upon a commit-ment to implement the out-come of the second? Shouldthere be a commitment byDelta to support this land as
it does other Delta farmlandbefore requesting it be putin the ALR?
Until Delta taxpayersprovide the Southlands withdrainage and irrigation ser-vices consistent with whatthey provide other farmsin Delta, is not an ALRrequest suspect?
Is it a sincere commit-ment to the support andprotection of good farm-land, or is it only intendedto drive a stake in the heartof development proposals? Isuspect the latter.

Harvie presented a revisedTsawwassen Area Plan toDelta council on Monday. All components of therevised plan appeared tohave been unanimouslyapproved by mayor andcouncil.
The revised plan can bedivided into two parts —(1) a proposal to place theSouthlands in the ALR; and(2) several zoning changes, particularly in central andnorth Tsawwassen. Harvie
proposed to have a separatepublic hearing for each parton the same night, March 1.
I suggest the public hear-ings be held on separatenights with an interludebetween since it is unlikelyeither hearing will be com-pleted in a single evening, and since the Southlandsissue will likely dominate.
I also suggest the publichearing on the non-ALRzoning changes be heldin about six weeks ratherthan three weeks sincepast experience indicates it
takes time for the public tobecome aware of the detailsof the zoning changes andrealize the implications foreach resident.
The proposed non-ALRzoning changes are sig-nificant and deserve carefulpublic scrutiny. I am con-cerned they may be adoptedunder the smokescreen ofthe ongoing Southlandsdrama.
Finally, as the debacleof the previous area planpasses from the news,Tsawwassen residents
should remember the chairand vice-chair of the coun-cil committee were council-lors Bruce McDonald andHeather King. McDonaldand King proposed andseconded the motion lastSeptember to approve thedoomed area plan and sendit to a public hearing.
There is a municipalelection this Novemberand I suggest it wouldbe in the best interests ofTsawwassen residents tonot re-elect them.

Editor:The deadline for the
Water in Words short storycontest is less than a weekaway. I know there are atleast a few young writersout there who have hesi-tated to enter because theyknow the winners will betelling their stories on stageat Genesis Theatre on WorldStorytelling Day.
So, to all of those whoare letting that “stage” thingstop them from writingtheir stories, let me reassureyou that it’s not as scary asit sounds. You will not haveto do this alone.
The students whosestories make the top six inboth the elementary andhigh school categories will
start by attending a three-hour professional storytell-ing workshop with me atCougar Canyon Elementaryon March 3 during schoolhours.
After a fun afternoon(and notice that you get toskip out of school for a fewhours), we will see whereeveryone is. Then, over thenext few weeks, I will workprivately with each youth toensure everyone is 100 percent ready for the stage onMarch 20.
And, on the big day, Iwill be there on stage withyou, hosting the event.
Writing and performingmy stories (and coachingothers to do the same) iswhat I do for a living, so
trust me when I say I canhelp even the youngeststoryteller. And if you wantmom and dad in the wings,or your favourite stuffy inyour arms for support, that’sjust fine with me.
Don’t let the “perfor-mance” part of storytellingstand in your way.
So get writing! The dead-line is Feb. 15. You can dropoff your story at LadnerElementary (8:30 a.m. to4 p.m.) or mail it to Waterin Words, PO Box 1202,Station A, Delta, B.C., V4M3T3.

Comment, Feb. 5It would be nice if we put
our own system in, but is itgoing to change anything?
You just have to see thelocal shuttle buses that run
throughout Delta. Theyhave very bad ridership. Iwonder why this is?
It’s not becauseTransLink is providing theservice, but because we aretoo lazy to wait for the bus.TransLink tried to providea good service but a lot ofthe time it was running half
empty or it was only full atpeak times.
We won’t see ridershipgo up enough to make tran-sit viable until at least 30per cent of the drivers whogo to downtown Vancouverget out of their cars, or gasgoes up to $10 a litre.

Most days, my dog takes me for awalk on the dike at Boundary Bay.I have come to know the dike as“God’s Café” because each day Godputs on the creation menu a “blueplate special” that fills my sensesand my soul.
I have feasted on countlesssquadrons of geese; a deer standingmajestically beside the path; soaringeagles; slinking coyotes; stately blueherons; ducks unlimited; the seasonschanging from life to dormancy andback; bees; beetles and other crawl-ing insects; the mountains in theirmajesty and the ocean in calmnessand in power. Our God is a God ofabundance and variety and life.
We hear in the Gospel of John:“The Word [Jesus the Christ] was
first, the Word was present to God,God was present to the Word. TheWord was God, in readiness for Godfrom day one. Everything was cre-ated through him — not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into being was Life, andthe life was light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; thedarkness couldn’t put it out.” (TheMessage — Eugene Peterson)
I invite you to come into the light,to feast in the abundance and varietyof God’s creation. Come and fill yoursenses and your soul.

A case against genectic modification
Atypical kitchen inDelta probablyhas more geneti-cally modified
(GM) foods than you maythink. With over 30,000 dif-ferent products on our localgrocery store’s shelves, youwould be hard-pressed toopen a cupboard and notfind something made froma GM plant.
What exactly is a GMfood? A GMfood hashad its DNAaltered bythe insertionof foreigngenes froma plant, ani-mal, viralor bacte-rial source. If you arefamiliar withthe “cut”and “paste”options onyour com-puter, thinkof GM foodsas havingone organ-ism “cut out”and another “pasted” in itsplace.
For example, corn isbeing modified throughoutNorth America — via theinsertion of a soil bacterium— to self-produce a pes-ticide that makes the cornless vulnerable to insectdamage. Less damageequals greater production ofcrops, which in turn equalsmore corn on the market for
the consumer.Sounds great, doesn’t it?
However, it really isn’t thatsimple. While some peoplebelieve GM foods are theanswer to the world’s foodshortages, others believethey pose a danger to anunsuspecting public.
Consumer groups andscientists have expressed anumber of concerns aboutGM foods, including theirunknown long-term healthrisks, the possible creationof new allergens, super-weeds and superbugs, andthe potential for gene pol-lution and antibiotic resis-tance. About 60 per cent ofour processed foods contain
some geneticmodifica-tion. This islargely dueto the preva-lence of soyin processedfoods which, next to corn,is the larg-est modifiedfood. Notthat we’dbe awareof that, though. Themanufactur-ers are notrequired bylaw to labelGM foods.Where label-
ing is mandatory inEurope, a similar bill in ourParliament back in 2001was voted down.
For a list of GMO-freefoods, Greenpeace releasedits own shoppers list forconsumers (gmoguide.greenpeace.ca) that detailseverything from baby foodto vegetarian and meatalternatives.

to avoid GM foods, it reallyjust takes some commonsense. Avoid products withfood labels longer than yourarm (the more processeda food is, the more certainyou can be there is a GMingredient in there) and eatorganic fruit and vegetables.
You will also want to payattention to what you eateats too. Our livestock is
also fed GM corn and oats.Eat the cow that is fed GMfeed and you are also eatingwhat he had for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Playing lacrosse outside theLower Mainland is nothing newfor Logan Schuss.
That’s one of the reasonswhy the Nanaimo Timbermenselected the Ladner native sixthoverall in Tuesday’s WesternLacrosse Association draft.
Schuss was the Delta Junior“A” Islanders leading scorerwhen his playing rights weredealt to the Calgary Raidersof the Alberta Junior “A”Lacrosse League at the trading deadline last
season. The 22-year-old proceed-ed to lead the Raiders to the play-off championship — notching20 points in seven games. It washis second stint in the Albertacircuit, having also played for theEdmonton Eclipse in 2008.
Schuss was not the only for-mer longtime Islander to be a toppick in the draft. The CoquitlamAdanacs used the fourth over-all selection to take RobbieCampbell. He spent his entire
career with Delta before being sent to the
Junior “A” Adanacs at the trade deadlinewhere he helped them win the Minto Cupon their home floor.
The Burnaby Lakers used the fifth over-all pick on Scott Jones, who joined theIslanders late last season after a multi-play-er deal with the Port Coquitlam Saints.
Three Islanders — goalie Zack Boychuk(Nanaimo), Tyler Gohringer (Coquitlam)and Matt Laustrup (New West) were takenin the third round.
Boychuck and Laustrup also madetheir way to Delta on deadline deals fromNanaimo and PoCo respectively, while
Gohringer served as the Islanders’ teamcaptain and was a defensive standout dur-ing his three years with the club.
The Maple Ridge Burrards used theirfifth round pick to select Nathan Clare. TheLadner native began his junior “A” careerwith the Victoria Shamrocks before joininghis hometown team midway through lastseason. He recorded 21 points in 14 gamesand enjoyed a productive post-season with12 points in five games.
Rounding out the Islander selections, was Brandon Gains going in the eighthround to Burnaby.

Schuss goes 6th overall to Nanaimo in WLA draft
With the Delta Ice Hawks ina season-long battle with theRichmond Sockeyes for the bestrecord in the Pacific InternationalJunior Hockey League, it wasanother team that gladly remindedthem what they are about to face intwo weeks.
While the Ice Hawks andSockeyes meet for the final time onTuesday (7:30 p.m.) in Ladner, thelocals better start paying attentionto the Grandview Steelers.
The teams are destined to meetin the opening round of the PIJHLplayoffs and the gap between thetwo is much closer than the 14points in the conference standingssuggests. The Steelers roared backfrom a 3-0 deficit to hand Delta a4-3 home ice loss on Tuesday. Eachgame in the season series has beena battle with Grandview now win-ning the last two meetings. Theyface each other again on Sundayafternoon in Burnaby.
“Some teams you match-upwell against and some teams youdon’t,” said Ice Hawks coach DaveMcLellan. “The style they playis not our favourite style to playagainst.
“I thought all along (the play-offs) would be tougher than mostpeople think. The good thing is atleast they now know these gamesare for real. We played a lot ofgames for months that didn’t seemfor real. This will heighten ourpreparation.”
To the Ice Hawks credit, they
probably deserved better fate. After a sloppy second period
that allow the Steelers to pulleven, they dominated the final 20minutes and missed several greatchances to pull in front. It set thestage for Jeffrey Coi to jump on amiscue and put the visitors in frontfor good.
What also hurt Delta’s chanceswas playing much of the gamewithout John Proctor and MitchPacey. They combined for theteam’s opening goal but receivedgame misconducts for checking-from-behind and checking-to-the-head infractions respectively.
The fact, the duo, along withAnthony Brito, have been the IceHawks’ most productive line of latealso suggests why they only have a3-2 record in their last five games.Team captain and PIJHL leadingscorer Liam Harding has cooledoff since an injury to linemateCody Smith, while the trio of KyeBenjaminsen, Cody Fidgett andAaron Merrick have yet to play totheir potential.
“You do go through a phase inthe year when goal scorers are notgoal scorers,” added McLellan, who suggests Smith might notbe return until the playoffs.“Hopefully we get some confi-dence and get that back.
“The other thing is a month andhalf of inconsistent line-up is start-ing to catch up with us bit. First itwas Fidgett and Benjaminson out,and now it’s Smith.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS
C. John Gibson1924-2011
John Gibson was a beloved andadmired husband, Dad and Grampa.John was an RCAF pilot during WW IIand the 1950’s. He flew the P-51Mustang and was one of the first tobreak the sound barrier in the CanadairF-86 Sabre jet. He was always modestabout his flying, though, and preferredto remember his Air Force years for thefriendships he made.
John met Carol, his soon-to-be wife, at an AirForce dance. They fell head-over-heels inlove, and were married shortly after onFebruary 17, 1950. They enjoyed 8 years ofbeing stationed throughout Canada, and thenpacked up the station wagon in 1959 andmoved from Ontario to B.C. They lived in
Richmond for almost 15 years and then built their own house inTsawwassen where they lived for over 35 years.John was passionate about many things in life. He loved his family andwas proud that his five grown kids were happy and healthy, and thatthey gave him and Carol ten grandchildren.John was an athlete and in his younger years played soccer andbaseball. When he moved to Richmond, he and Carol joined the Gulf ofGeorgia Club where they were avid curlers.John loved golf. He started playing as a teenager in Winnipeg, andplayed his whole life. He liked nothing better than to be on the links atBeach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, where he was a member forover 40 years. He played almost daily and always insisted on walkingthe whole course. He liked to say that he wouldn’t use an electric cartuntil he was old. John had a great swing, and during his golfing careerachieved 7 Hole-in-Ones.John enjoyed Big Band music, and he and Carol were great dancers. Hehad a great singing voice and knew the words to almost every song;when he didn’t know the words, he would whistle. He had a greatsense of humour, and delighted his young grandchildren with magictricks. As they got older, he always had a joke to share with them. Johnalways stopped to talk to dogs and made it a habit to carry a dog cookiein his pocket whenever he went out.John and Carol loved to travel and saw many parts of the world. Theyspent 6 weeks every winter at Waikiki Beach. John would pack his golfclubs and his big straw hat and after playing 18 holes on the course, heand Carol would drink strawberry daiquiris and eat coconut shrimpwhile laughing about the rain and snow they were missing inTsawwassen.Perhaps John’s greatest legacy to his family was his unwaveringoptimism. When anyone asked him how he was, he would say, “Can’tcomplain; it could always be worse.” John was forever finding thebright side in difficult times and during his successful cancer treatmentsin the 1980’s he would intentionally schedule a golf game an hour aftera treatment so that he would have something to look forward to.To his very last days, John was determined to get back onto his golfcourse. Though confined to a wheelchair after injuring his back in May,John told his physiotherapist that he was in a hurry to get better so hecould golf again. He kept his membership up to date at the golf courseand his car filled with gas. He would say “Why give up? You neverknow what you can do until you try.”Sadly, he didn’t make it back to the golf course. He died peacefully inhis sleep and we are convinced that his last dreams were of his familyand his golf clubs.John is survived by Carol, his devoted and caring wife for 61 years, andby their five children and their families: Tom and Debbie, Cyril andCindy, Sandy and Jarron, Pat and Bruce, and Christine and Nick. Johnand Carol have 10 wonderful grandchildren: Jesse, Eric and Rosie,Andrew and Adam, Camille, Karin and Lisa, and Kaitlyn and John.We would like to thank the many friends who helped John and Carolduring the challenges of the past few months. There are so many of youand your love and support is greatly appreciated.John did not want a funeral, but we are sure he would like for you toremember him with a smile. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BCHeart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

We thought of you with love today,But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday,And days before that too.
We think of you in silence,We often speak your name; All we have now are memories,And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake,With which we will never part;God has you in his keep,We have you in our heart.
It broke our heart to lose you.But you didn’t go alone,
For a part of us went with you...The day God took you home.
You are greatly missed Dad,and will be forever in our hearts.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Feb. 13 - Feb. 19★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: Travel, call during anactive, friendly Sunday. But this night, settle into home– and there, through Monday/Tuesday, tackle somedifficult questions around relationships, marriage andlife’s opportunities. (Are there any left for you? Yes,many, but they’re all connected to ambition, career, until late 2012.) Tuesday’s better; a “secret” friendor stranger might help. Romance, creativity, pleasureand beauty whisk you to adventure midweek! (Don’tstart a love relationship this week, though. It’s doomedlong term.) Plunge into chores Friday/Saturday. Chasefun, friends, all week.Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent lies onambition, career, dealings with VIPs, bosses andparents. Take a quiet, behind-the-scenes approach.Confidential discussions, private planning, quietlylining up allies, contacting/applying to governmentor institutions – all these contain a quiet but lucky“change.” Chase money or shop Sunday, but NOT fortechie items.Monday (barriers) and Tuesday (success)bring errands, communications, paperwork, details.Midweek accents home, and a choice betweenambition and relaxation. Romance calls Friday/Saturday. All week, avoid over-exertion, physical andintellectual.Gemini May 21-June 20:DON’T fall in love, propose,or chase a new romance this week. You’ve startedto achieve success in group and social situations– and this will continue for four months of solid,heart-warming growth. If you’re single, this mightwell yield a new love. But not this week. You shineSunday: start new projects, ask favours, show yourtalents. Your intuition is superb, so just do, rather thanover-think. Quit by suppertime. Money, purchases andpossessions fill Monday (barriers, waste) and Tuesday(success – buy high-tech). Communicate, travelmidweek. Home, rest Friday/Saturday.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Mysteries continue, forone more week. Seek the truth beneath appearances.Dig deep. (Someone acts sweet but can’t or won’tdo what they seem to promise. Applies all week.)Rest, plan and meditate Sunday. Visit a psychic, pastor or other counsellor. Your energy, charisma andeffectiveness surge Monday/Tuesday. Monday holdsrefusals despite your luck, but you might vault overthem. Tuesday favours you, especially in two areas:friendship, and depths. (So again, dig deep.) Chasemoney or a sensual bond Wednesday (good) andThursday (goals might be elusive). Talk, travel Friday/Saturday.Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships are accented, but don’t fall in love or propose this week. (Don’tworry – if such seems imminent, there’s still lots oftime.) Wishes come true Sunday – happiness, friends, light romance and popularity paint your future withgolden strokes! But retreat this night through Tuesday:you need a short but deep rest: seek quietude, plan, contemplate. You’ll spy the inner workings of loveTuesday. Your energy, charisma and effectivenesssurge upward Wednesday/Thursday – strike earlyWednesday, in legal, travel, intellectual areas. Chaseand conserve money Friday/Saturday.Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last weekof work – Friday begins a month of fresh breezes, exciting meetings, new horizons and opportunities.(Opportunities are unusually important this winter/spring – seizing them can change your life.) UntilFriday afternoon, complete chores, especially theobligations that “show up” Wednesday/Thursday – ifneglected they will weigh you down later, just whenyou should be rising. Earlier, chase practical andprestige goals Sunday – success accompanies theambitious! Wishes, optimism and social joys markMonday/Tuesday. All week, DON’T begin a new love.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The romantic themecontinues, but DO NOT begin a love affair or newrelationship this week. Other themes, creativity, speculation, beauty, pleasure and teaching, are fine.Generally, you are (or your subconscious is) puttingon the brakes a bit in all these areas, preparing fora subsequent surge. Sunday’s splendid – intellectual, travel, love and communication projects succeed.Exercise your ambitions Monday (dilemmas of choice)and Tuesday (success via creative effort). Socialdelights, flirtations, wish fulfillment arrive midweek!Retreat Friday/Saturday: plan the work that looms.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your “hibernation”period continues, so rest deeply – until Friday, whena month of romance, pleasure, speculation, riskand adventure starts! Neither make nor accept anypartnership proposals this week (nor persuasivepitches for commitment of any kind). Sunday offerssuperb financial, investment, research, diagnosticand intimate opportunities. Sit down with a lovedone for a deep, exploratory talk. Gentle wisdomenters Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious mid-week,especially first thing Wednesday morning. (Avoid self-deception.) Friday/Saturday bring social delights andbright optimism!Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: If a new wish or lifegoal comes to you this week, don’t invest a lot offaith in it; your destiny is very likely going to detouraround this one. Sunday’s filled with opportunities(or opposition if you push others too hard) – excitingmeetings or openings “synch” with your intuition. It’sa good time to answer “yes” on a whim. Life’s depthsand mysteries rise to the surface Monday/Tuesday:DON’T invest, commit, nor seek intimacy Monday –Tuesday, these succeed. Gentle love, understanding, cultural stuff Wednesday/Thursday. Friday begins amonth of domestic matters.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Continue to seek money, new clients, to buy and sell, until Friday.Your personalityhas grown more gracious and alluring the past week orso, and this helps you with ambitions this week. You’reslowly changing, and slowly but seriously climbing, carving out a new “position” this decade.Tackle choresSunday – you accomplish much! Relationships containopportunity and opposition Monday, but successand good feelings Tuesday. Finances, investigation, intimacy, lifestyle choices are blessed Wednesday,“iffy” Thursday. Wisdom, gentle love come Friday/Saturday. A busy month begins.Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Yourenergy,effectivenessand charisma continue at a peak...sexual magnetismdrips from you too. (Hmm, not sure of that image.)You might attract amorous attention, but DON’Tbegin a love affair now (nor ever with anyone youfirst meet this week). Sunday’s romantic, creative, pleasurable and beautiful – you’ll win at games orlove! Tackle chores Monday (results uncertain) andTuesday (good results). Relationships, opportunities, exciting meetings fill Wednesday (lucky morning!)and Thursday (be diplomatic, not evasive). Friday’sfinancial, and begins a month of money efforts.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Continue to lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Refresh your spirit. Fridaybegins a month of fresh energy, rising charisma andeffectiveness – but rest until then. Sunday’s splendidat home or in nature – a great day to enhance yoursecurity, deal with family members, garden, etc.Romance, creativity and beauty touch you lightlyMonday/Tuesday, but the best that comes from this isfriendship. It’s not quite time, Pisces.Tackle chores andhealth concerns Wednesday/Thursday. Wednesdaymorning’s efforts can open a lucky career door. Excitingmeetings, opportunities occur Friday/Saturday.
