given to alternatives todeveloping Delta farmlandsfor port-related uses.

“I’m not one of thesepeople who say all tradeis bad and we shouldn’thave a port out here. WhatI want to see is Port MetroVancouver maximize thefootprint of what’s outhere, work with (port of)Prince Rupert and changethe infrastructure model, sothat they’re not relying on

road movement to and fromthe port,” Emsley told theOptimist.

“The important thingnow is going to be the nextsessions in the fall, whenwe’ll get to see just howthe port is going to react toall the comments that weremade,” he said.

Emsley said that whilethere was some good dis-cussion during the work-shops, the most important

idea that should have hadmore conversation was theneed to examine alterna-tive locations outside theLower Mainland, includ-ing expanding the portin Prince Rupert and theproposed inland port inAshcroft. Such alterna-tives should be examinedin greater detail before anychanges to land designationin the Lower Mainland areconsidered, he said.

“In some respects, I wasquite pleased to hear anumber of comments sug-

gesting the port has got todo much more to respectcommunities and respectthe environment, and ques-tioning whether they shouldbe continuing to expandin areas such as RobertsBank,” Emsley said.

Emsley noted his groupsupports the Ashcroft termi-nal project.

He also pointed to a 2008federal panel’s suggestionthat one way to handle port-related expansion is throughthe development of inlandterminals.

“During the (workshop)discussions there were anumber of people who said,‘Why aren’t you cooper-ating more with PrinceRupert?’ They’re trying todo the same things you areand have a very good infra-structure,” said Emsley.

“I’ve said it at the work-shops, and before, that thecurrent infrastructure modelthat relies extensively onroad movement to serve theport is broken. You can’tkeep just adding trucks andmoving between port prop-

erties and building moredistribution centres andintermodel yards. One ofthe solutions to that is thekind of inland terminal (byrail) that Ashcroft is pro-posing,” he added.

Delta council recentlyrenewed a call for the gov-ernment to give seriousconsideration to the propos-al to build an inland con-tainer terminal at Ashcroft.

Andy Anderson, themayor of that community, recently thanked Delta forits support.

Work is now under wayto give two local heritagebuildings a new lease onlife.

Ladner United Churchand the former LadnerBaptist Church building, which are both more than100 years old, will begin tosee new life in the comingweeks and months.

Last week, scaffoldingwent up at Ladner Unitedas the exterior work on thechurch began.

The church, constructedin the Gothic Revival styleof architecture, has servedthe community for 120years.

It opened in 1893 asSt. Andrew’s PresbyterianChurch and served that con-gregation until 1925 whenit merged with the LadnerMethodist Church andbecame Ladner United.

The building has under-gone some changes over theyears. It was raised in the1930s to allow for the con-struction of a basement. Ahall was added to the southof the original building in1938 and in the 1970s, alarge, single story additionwas constructed on the westside of the church.

Despite the changes, thechurch has maintained itsoriginal character through-out the years, however, timeand weather have takentheir toll.

Exterior repairs, includ-ing a new roof, repainting, gutter replacements, out-door lighting and perimeterdraining, will be takingplace to protect the buildingfrom damage in the comingwinter months.

On the interior, the sanc-tuary will be restored andplanned upgrades include,a community kitchen, newoffices, refurbished meet-ing spaces and a desig-nated space for the extremeweather shelter.

Rev. Jim Short said therestoration of the buildinghas been in the works forseveral years.

“The church membershave worked long and hardfor this,” he said.

The church held a briefceremony, which includedMayor Lois Jackson andCoun. Ian Paton, Fridaymorning to kick off thework. In lieu of a ceremo-nial ground breaking, sinceno ground is being brokenfor the project, Jacksonand Paton, along withchurch representatives andbuilder Steve Knoblauch, whose company RAMConstruction is heading theproject, started the exteriorwork with a ceremonialpaint scraping.

Another new addition tothe church includes a bellfor the bell tower.

Short said the church was

build with a tower but hasnever had a bell.

“When I came 11 yearsago, one of my goals was to

get a bell up in that tower,”he said.

A member of a congrega-tion donated the bell. Short

said it was cast in Ohioaround the same time as thechurch. The cast steel bellwas originally designed tobe used in a school or on afarm.

Construction is expectedto take about seven months,Knoblauch said, and costaround $2.5 million, evenwith the Corporation waiv-ing about $250,000 indevelopment cost charges.

“Ladner United Churchwould like to extend abig work of thanks to theCorporation of Delta,Mayor Lois Jackson, themunicipal council, commu-nity planning and develop-ment, and the engineeringdepartment for their supportof this project,” Short said.

Just a few blocks away,Knoblauch has taken onanother heritage churchrestoration. His companyrecently started work on

restoring the former LadnerBaptist Church building.

The church, which islocated on the cornerof Delta Street and 47AAvenue, was originally builtin 1902. The steeple andtwo additional rooms wereconstructed in 1912.

It was sold in the 1970safter the construction ofa new Baptist church. Itwas leased for educationalpurposes and most recentlywas home to a daycare, buthas been vacant for severalmonths.

While Knoblauch aimsto restore the exterior of thebuilding, the interior willbe renovated into an office. In addition to restoring theold church, Knoblauch hadapplied to build three townhomes at the rear of the lot.

The small house behindthe church, which was usedas a parsonage, was recentlydemolished. The churchbuilding was also moved sixfeet closer to 47A Avenueto make room for the resi-dences.

While the restorationword has already begun onthe church, which requiressignificant work to repairthe deteriorating founda-tion, council has not yetapproved the townhousedevelopment phase of theproject.

“It was in pretty badshape,” Knoblauch said ofthe old church, adding thatthe tower had sunk by fiveinches.

Restoring the twochurches, which are twoof the oldest buildings inDelta, is a labour of love forKnoblauch.

“It’s a good feeling,” hesaid.

“I will never in my lifeget the money back that Iput in to save this,” he saidof the Ladner Baptist build-ing.

The restoration of thechurch building is sched-uled for completion byNovember.

Delta South MLA VickiHuntington has some majorconcerns about the prospectof the provincial govern-ment allowing online vot-ing.

“The attorney generaland her office should knowthat the problems are almostinsurmountable,” she saidon Monday.

Last week, Minsterof Justice and AttorneyGeneral Shirley Bondannounced that she hasasked B.C.’s chief electoralofficer, Keith Archer, toconvene a panel to look intothe use of Internet-basedvoting in other jurisdictionsto determine any techno-logical or logistical barriersthat exist.

“Our province is widelyrecognized as being techno-logically progressive and aleader in open governmentinitiatives,” Bond said.“If the independent paneldetermines we can maintainthe utmost electoral integ-rity, I’m optimistic Internetvoting could increase

accessibility for BritishColumbians to participatein the democratic process.”

Huntington said she isnot confident the technol-ogy exists today to makeonline voting secure enoughto guard against hacking orpeople abusing the systemto stuff the ballot box.

“I don’t see it working atall,” she said.

Huntington added thatshe has spoken to someexperts on the subject who,she said, are also “very, very concerned.”

“The security issues areprofound and very real.”

Huntington said thepractice has been plaguedwith problems when usedduring leadership votesfor political parties. Shesaid voters were acquiringmultiple PINs and holding“PIN parties” in an effort tocast multiple votes for onecandidate.

More than 40 municipali-ties in Ontario and EasternCanada conduct a portionof voting online.

New Democratic Partyattorney-general criticLeonard Krog said he is

pleased with the announcedreview.

“This will be an oppor-tunity for an independentofficer of the legislatureto create a panel that willhopefully give the govern-ment and the legislatureand British Columbians theinformation and evidence itneeds to determine whetheror not [online voting] isfeasible, practical and mostimportantly whether, ifimplemented, it would haveintegrity,” he said, addinghe does not hold a strongopinion on the subject.

“I don’t have a personalleaning on Internet votingone way or the other. WhatI am personally strongon, and what [NDP leaderAdrian Dix] is very strongon obviously is increasingvoter participation,” Krogsaid.

“Internet voting may beone of the tools by whichwe can increase participa-tion and ensure that thegovernments fairly repre-sent the people who actu-ally are citizens.”

Delta spending $200,000 on North Delta plan review

Delta will spend almost$210,000 for a consultant toundertake the North DeltaArea Plan review.

Delta council a fewweeks ago approved acontract to DIALOG BCto undertake an extensivestudy of the area plan, which hasn’t been updatedsince 1995.

The consultant will con-duct such tasks as a demo-graphic analysis, publicconsultation, set priorityareas, land use planning, urban design, transportationplanning, public amenitiesand market analysis.

Delta staff are to providedirection to the consultantthroughout the process aswell as ensure the compo-nents are completed on timeand on budget.

When council earlieragreed to issue a request forproposals for a consultant, acouple of councillors askedwhy the cost seemed highand why the work wasn’t

being done by Delta plan-ning staff. Communityplanning director ThomasLeathem explained that nor-mally area plan reviews arecompleted in-house by staff, which might use consultantservices for small com-ponents such as technicalresearch or illustrations.

However, given the num-ber of other major projectsto be undertaken by thedepartment this year, aswell as an increasing num-ber of new developmentapplications to process, staff asked for a consultantto undertake the extensiveNorth Delta work so thereview could be completedin a timely manner.

Leathem said the scopeof the North Delta AreaPlan review is quite largeand the issues are complex.

Meanwhile, the recentlyassembled North Delta AreaPlan Committee is to alsodiscuss a range of issues, including housing and den-sity.

At around 52,000 resi-dents, North Delta has a

bigger population thanLadner and Tsawwassencombined.

Single-family makes upthe vast majority of thehousing stock, but much ofit is aging.

In an interview last year,Mayor Lois Jackson, aNorth Delta resident, saidthe community has its chal-lenges due to the age andlack of variety of housingand the fact little redevelop-ment has taken place.

A separate committeecalled the Invest in NorthDelta Mayor’s Standing

Committee is to identifyspecific measures to attractinvestment along the ScottRoad corridor and otherareas of the community tohelp the revitalization.

That committee is toreview residential, commer-cial and mixed-use develop-ment applications. It willalso explore potential part-nerships Delta could enterinto with the developmentcommunity to encourageeconomic investment, witha particular emphasis onScott Road.

At a recent meeting of

the committee, staff notedthere are many differentland use designations alongthe Scott Road corridor andthey will be try to deter-mine whether these couldbe simplified for the benefitof the development com-munity, noting that higherdensity is an objective forthe corridor.

An earlier study conclud-ed that there is no singleeconomic barrier to devel-opment in North Delta, specifically Scott Road, andmarket forces play a role, staff explained.

One member at thatmeeting stated it is impor-tant to send a clear signalthat “Delta is open for busi-ness” and create confidencein the building communityby following through withwhat is promised despitepotential community oppo-sition.

The new area plan is tobe completed by the endof this year with adoptionlikely to take place in early2013.

Residents can fill out anon-line survey available onthe municipal website.

My son got a chance to meet hisidol, Tony Hawk, recently. I knowhe was excited, but I couldn’t real-ly tell — he’s still pretty young andhe didn’t say much. I was thrilled, not so much to meet Tony, but tosee the look on my son’s face whenhe did.It reminded me of the day Brent

Seabrook brought the Stanley Cupto the South Delta Rec Centre forall the minor hockey players tosee, and to have a picture takenwith it and our local super-star. Itmay take 10 years or so, but I’msure we’ll be celebrating anotherlocal athlete’s success, and how he,or she, will mention that day as aturning point in their career. There are so many examples of

kids achieving great things aftermeeting their idol. Wayne Gretzkymeeting Gordie Howe. Bill Clintonmeeting John F. Kennedy. And how

many of our current Olympiansmentioned watching the Gamesof years past as the inspiration toexcel in their particular sport. For the last two weeks, I’ve been

glued to the television watchingthe London Games. I don’t knowwhat it is, but every four years I’llwake up in the middle of the nightto watch rowing, diving, decathlonand water polo, when other times Iwouldn’t change the channel froma Seinfeld episode I’ve seen 15times to watch these competitions.I even got caught up in the racewalking. They walk 50 kilometres, and faster than I can jog! The odd-est part was, even when they fin-ished, they still have to walk awayfrom the course. You’d think afterwalking 50km, the last thing they’dwant to do is walk some more. The best part of the Olympics

is seeing and hearing the stories ofwhat athletes overcome just to bethere. A strong performance is abonus. Imagine how young soccerplayers must feel after watchingChristine Sinclair and the women’ssoccer team battle on to take thebronze medal. We have lots of inspiration

around us, but it means nothing ifwe can’t translate inspiration intomotivation. After meeting Tony, I

used the opportunity to subtly talkwith my son about setting goals. It’s great talking to a young childabout setting a goal, because theydream so big and don’t see anylimitations on how high they canreach.“I want to go to the X-Games,

Dad,” he tells me.Then we talked about the steps

we need to take along the way tomake his dream a reality, just likewith any other goal.I tried to find some research on

the effectiveness of setting goals.Unfortunately, the Harvard studythat gets quoted all of the time(three per cent of the ‘54 class thatset goals had a higher net worththan all the remaining 97 per centwho didn’t) never actually hap-pened.Most successful people I know

of, however, write down their goalsand review them often. Seems likean easy lesson to teach a child, especially with the Olympic expe-rience so fresh in our minds. So, thanks to Tony Hawk, it

looks like we are on the road to X-Games 2020. Sounds like a lot oftime hanging around the skate parkfor me.Then again, I can use that time

to look over my goals.

MURPHY’SLAW

Perhaps it just makes too much sense.I’m trying to come up with some kind

of explanation as to why the provincialand federal governments refuse to cometo the table with money to address thesediment build up in the secondary chan-nels of the Fraser River. It’s painfully obvious this untenable

situation, created by more than a decadeof government neglect, will continue toworsen until one of those giant dredg-ers eventually shows up on the Ladnerwaterfront. Yet no one in senior govern-ment, or at least no one high enoughup the food chain, seems in any kind ofhurry to make that happen. The case for dredging has been made

articulately and repeatedly over the yearsby a number of individuals and organiza-tions, most notably the Ladner SedimentGroup, yet it doesn’t seem to matter whattactic has been used, senior governmenthas been able to look the other way.Initial lobbying efforts focused on the

physical and how an annoying situationhas evolved into a dangerous one whereboats are stuck at low tide and floathomes are thrown off kilter.Advocates then did the necessary

homework to hand government a ready-made dredging plan and more recently,Delta and Port Metro Vancouver eachpledged $2 million toward putting thatplan into practice. A report detailing theeconomic activity along the river has alsobeen prepared.Throw in the efforts of MLAVicki

Huntington, the Delta Chamber ofCommerce and MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, and it’s clear everyone in these parts ison the same page. That’s because theargument in favour of dredging is notpartisan or self-serving, but simply theright thing to do for a town that’s situatedon the banks of a major river.Yet somehow, in a logic-defying move,

both levels of senior government remainsilent. Speaking of illogical, given adredging program was in place for areason before the feds bailed on it, didthey think if they stopped funding it thatsomehow the silt would magically stopaccumulating?None of this makes any sense and you

wonder what more this community has todo or, heaven forbid, what has to happenin one of the secondary channels, beforethe powers that be finally comes to theirsenses. The ironic part is we’re only asking

for a one-time contribution of a relativelypaltry $4 million, a figure that would besplit between Victoria and Ottawa, andthen just a half-million annually. It’s hardto believe senior governments can’t digthat up.

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Re: Thriving rowing pro-

gram is already availablefor high school athletes, let-

ter to the editor, July 20Jane McCall begins

her letter by stating that a“thriving rowing programis already available for highschool athletes,” but shelater reveals, “it would bewonderful to have a highschool program.” FirstMcCall claims they have ahigh school program, thenshe states it would be niceto have one. What exactly isshe saying? Isn’t this a con-tradiction?

She then goes on to saythe Delta Deas RowingClub “has an expandingjunior program,” but how

can that be when manyjunior members have leftthe club in the past twoyears? Most of the athletesthat once attended this clubhave been successful onlyafter leaving DDRC to rowelsewhere.

McCall’s statement thatthe DDRC is unable toreceive interest from anyhigh schools is false. In thefall of 2010, at the localhigh school I attend, 48students showed an interestin joining the rowing pro-gram. McCall and the clubresponded that “DDRC willnot be able to offer pro-grams to the high schoolsuntil the spring.” But whenspring came around, nosuch program emerged and

we were told it could not bedone.

Three years ago my fam-ily and I came across thesport of rowing at DeasSlough, which has led mybrothers and I to manyacademic opportunities andathletic experiences. Sadly, all of these were outsideDelta.

We were surprised athow few youth had thechance to row compared tothe amount of teenagers inDelta.

We brought the juniorprogram, or lack of one, tothe attention of the boardof directors, including thepresident, McCall. Weexplained that more Deltayouth should be involved,

and that a “thriving juniorprogram” does not consistof two local high schoolrowers.

Unfortunately, our state-ments were ignored and theadult members continue tomonopolize this facility.

Delta and Delta youthdeserve more from thisbeautiful communityresource at Deas Slough.I take exception to DeltaDeas Rowing Club. It istime for this club to own upto its actions and respon-sibilities. Every teenagerin Delta deserves the sameopportunities I have beengiven through rowing. Thisletter is for them.

the lack of industrial land,Aug. 3

It seems we are oncemore being urged to allowdestruction of farmland forindustrial purposes. We areencouraged to fear certainloss of jobs if we don’t dothis.

We know better, thanks

to local citizens like RogerEmsley [www.againstpor-texpansion.org], DonnaPassmore and HaroldSteves of the FarmlandDefense League of B.C.,Anne Murray, Mary Taittand Susan Jones.

We know there is noneed for a second terminalat Deltaport and the resultsof building it would be

disastrous for people andwildlife.

We know we don’t havesufficient farmland forfood security and must saveevery piece that we can. Weknow that serious droughtin regions we have importedfood from is causing highprices and that shortageswill follow.

We know that farming

sustainably will producemore jobs. We know thePacific Flyway for migra-tory birds is too importantto lose and we have noteven begun to find waysto develop eco-tourism asother communities have.

We are not fooled by fearmongering and will opposefurther loss of farmland.

Editor:Re: ‘Junior Kindergarten’

school given the go aheadto develop vacant lot adja-cent to 7-Eleven in Ladner,Aug. 3

I read with alarm thearticle on the expan-sion of so-called “JuniorKindergarten” into Ladner.

Core Education andFine Arts (CEFA) is reallyhigh priced childcare withuniforms for toddlers. Iwonder if taxpayers knowthat CEFA and other com-mercial, big-box, for-profitchild care operations areable to access operatingfunds from the provincialgovernment while theysimultaneously chargehigher than market fees inorder to make a profit forshareholders and investors.

There is indeed a child-care crisis in B.C. with too

few quality licensed spaces, poverty wages for workersand parent fees that havereached $1,915 per monthper child.

But the solution isnot going to be found inexpanding commercialchildcare. The solution isthe $10/day Early Care& Learning Plan that hashuge support from parents, grandparents, municipali-ties, school boards, com-munity organizations andacademics across B.C.

Quality affordable child-care services should not justbe for the wealthy or thelucky.

Let’s make childcarean election issue in May2013 and make sure work-ing families can access theservices they need for theirchildren.

Editor:Re: Premier gets an ear-

ful on traffic, Aug. 8Both our premier and

mayor and council haveapparently recognized thechaotic traffic situation thatwould follow the introduc-tion of more vehicles, bothcommercial and passen-ger, if development of theTsawwassen First Nationlands and the Southlandsproperty take place.

In spite of this, Deltacouncil is still encouragingboth proposals by not deny-ing services to the TFN forthe major shopping plaza, and by proceeding with theSouthlands public hear-ings as if they were totallyunaware of the impact suchdevelopments would haveon local citizens.

The signs erected alongthe fence on the west sideof 56th Street (surround-ing the Southlands) andthe pretty little home pres-ently receiving finishingtouches at Town CentreMall — proclaiming nottoo subtly that it is a sampleof many soon to be built atSouthlands — suggest thatfar from being concernedfor the quality of life inTsawwassen, our council’sprotestations and expres-sions of concern may sim-ply be a smokescreen toconvince us its decision hasreally not been made.

Meanwhile, both the TFNand the developer of theSouthlands know they maysoon be permitted to “pro-ceed as planned.”

There are many thingsabout this amazing worldof ours that I do not under-stand, but there is one thingI know for sure. No oneneeds five dozen pairs ofsocks.

This occurred to merecently when I had a dayoff work and decided to payattention to some of thosethings I never have time for.Today, I said to myself, Iwill take stock of the sockdrawer. (What’s that, yousay? I need to “get a life”?)

I noticed, pretty darnedquick, that the sock drawerhad undergone somewhat ofa transformation since I’dlast taken stock.

Simply put, some 28extra pairs of socks —anklets, knee-highs, mid-calf argyles, you name it— had made their way intothe drawer when I wasn’t

paying attention. (Wherethey had come from, I donot know. I can only sur-mise that some beneficentsock fairy had placed themthere while I was sleeping.)

“How many socks doyou think a person shouldhave?” I asked my husbandand son.

“Eighteen,” said the hus-band.

“Thirty,” said the son.“So you don’t have to washtoo often.”

“But 60, we agree, is toomany?” I asked.

They nodded.I began to purge, and

turned my attention to thehousehold stock of coffeecups. Again, some kind-hearted cup fairy had clear-ly been stopping by.

“And coffee cups?” Iasked the family. “The idealnumber?”

The husband and sonpondered.

“I think about 12,” saidthe husband. “After all, wewouldn’t be able to fit morethan 12 people around thedining room table.”

“Maybe 14,” said the son.

“But 37, we agree, is toomany?” I asked.

They nodded, and Ibegan to purge. Out wentthe cups with the chips andthe stains and the picturesof Niagara Falls.

The day off workremained wide open.

I turned my attention tothe linen closet, and dis-covered that while I hadn’tbeen looking, the stashof towels had multiplied.I counted some 46 of thethings, a good 30 morethan the average familyneeds, the husband and soninformed me.

The drawer of dishclothsbeckoned, as did the cutlerydrawer and the bookshelves, which happened to houseseven atlases, 14 VancouverIsland travel guides and fiveFrench-English dictionaries.

I purged, then looked atthe clock.

The day off had beenproductive, but the produc-tive part would end.

I made some iced teaand plopped myself down— and kept watch for thosevisiting fairies.

As is the case every year, the Delta Museum is get-ting ready to open its doorswith a special exhibit thisweekend.

In honour of the annualQuilt Walk and ClassicCar Show, the museumhas pulled out a numberof quilts from its archives, dating back to the 1860s,for its Historical Quilt Walkdisplay.

Traditionally, womenmade quilts as gifts to mark

special occasions, such asweddings or the birth of ababy.

Many of the patternsincorporate smaller piecesof fabric from worn outclothing and served tobecome historical docu-ments for the quilt makerand his or her loved ones.

One of the better knownquilts at the museum is theCrazy Quilt, which wascreated by Delta pioneerIsabella McKee Curtis

in the 1880s. She usedlush scraps of velvet, silkand cotton with inventiveembroidery stitches to jointhe patches together.

The antique quilts willbe on display throughoutthe museum’s recreatedperiod rooms. The museumwill be open from 10 a.m.until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.Admission is by donation.

Some of the quilts willremain on display until theend of the month.

TsawwassenSpringsscorecard

‘Springs’ layout will appeal to everyoneNew Tsawwassen golf course features more yardage and challenges yet is still ideal for higher handicappers

Casual golfers and high handi-cappers can breathe a sigh ofrelief. South Delta once againhas a golf course for you.

What made the oldTsawwassen Golf and CountryClub appealing for seniors, nov-ice players and even corporatetournaments was its relativelyforgiving trek that served upplenty of scoring holes. It meanthours of practice at the drivingrange wasn’t a must for a slighthope to see a couple of pars oreven birdies on the scorecard.

With that in mind, the develop-ment group behind TsawwassenSprings approached renownedVancouver area course designerTed Locke to redraw the 18 holesaround the new $400-million res-idential development with a lay-out that would satisfy everyone.

Locke has done just that.Tsawwassen Springs is a

par 70 that plays over 5,400yards from the tips, yet is just ashade over 4,000 yards from theforward tees. There is a muchgreater emphasis on shot mak-ing that won’t allow big hittersto just “grip it and rip it” fromevery tee box.

The course officially openedfor public play last week whileconstruction continues on therest of the development. A tem-porary pro shop is in operation,as is the driving range that willeventually be a full practice/teaching facility. The permanentpro shop will be located in thenew clubhouse that will be com-pleted sometime next spring.

“It is a lot more challengingthan what it was but if you playthe way Ted designed it and don’tget greedy, then you can playwell,” said Roy Toigo of ShatoHoldings Ltd, the majority owner

of Tsawwassen Springs.“You want a course where it is

challenging but not so tough thatyou hated it. You want to enjoyyourself and feel good aboutyourself. We have three sets oftee blocks so you can play whereyou feel most comfortable.”

Tsawwassen Springs headprofessional Murray Poje hasalready played the course “fouror five times” with a 4-under 66being his best score to date. Healso happens to hold the courserecord at the old layout, a 13-under 52. He says those days ofjaw dropping scores are over forany pro that tries to go that lowon the new trek.

“Ted has put a thought processinto every hole,” said Poje. “Itdoesn’t matter what your abilityis because it’s still going to beinteresting. Anybody with twogood shots can make birdie (onthese par 4s) but then you’ve gota big hitter who could also makea six really easy. That makes it agood hole.

“I think it is a good layout forthe people who will be playinghere. There is also plenty of risk/reward holes which is a fun partof golf.”

Ten of the 18 holes are locatedon the old course layout where asubstantial amount of money wasspent to improve overall drain-age. It’s on this side where thereis more of an emphasis on pre-mium shot making.

“A lot of the allure of thiscourse is the greens. They arevery interesting to putt,” addedPoje. “When you get over theother side of the course, thereare more wide open holes like 11and 12 but both have very toughgreens.”

About a third of the coursearea is set aside as undisturbednatural habit for local wildlife, while many mature trees have

been carefully transplantedwhich provide some old coursefeel to returning players.”

“There is a lot of familiarityfor all the old residents that useto play here all the time,” saidToigo. “There are a lot of areaswhere people will feel they areback home again after a renova-tion. That’s going to make peoplehappy to be here too.”

Tsawwassen Springs greenfees range from $29-$79 onweekdays and $39-$89 on week-ends.

Delta residents receive a $10discount during peak time whilea special $99 eight month ratecard provides one free round and$30 discount on peak time fees. The pro shop number is 604-948-GOLF (4653).

Tsawwassen Springs head professional Murray Poje says the brand new par-70 layout is a good fit for golfers of allages and ability. Below, Poje takes aim for his third shot on the par-5 18th hole where players will have to hit overwater to attack the pin. The course is now open for public play.

Ladner Red Sox capped a perfect summerof all-star baseball by capturing the Bantam“A” provincial championship in Kamloops.

The Red Sox headed to the Interior Cityas the number one seed and the team to beatafter going undefeated in qualifying play.

The momentum continued in Kamloopswhere Ladner had to overcome its opponentsand sizzling daily temperatures.

The bats were swinging and connectingright out of the gate as the locals defeatedBurnaby 17-7, in a game that was closerthan the final score indicated.

Game two featured a rematch of theDiane Cook Tournament back in Newtontwo months earlier as Ladner squared offagainst the Cloverdale Spurs.

Both teams displayed excellent pitch-ing and defence as the game went to extrainnings tied at 1-1. Ladner erupted for fourruns in the top of the eighth inning and heldon for a 5-1 victory.

After strong pitching and hitting produceda 10-0 win over Vernon, Ladner closed outround-robin play against number three seedRidge Meadows. The well-played game sawthe lead change hands on a number of occa-sions before the Red Sox pulled away for a

7-5 victory. The undefeated locals moved onto the

semi-finals where they were matched upagainst host Kamloops.

It proved to be a tight struggle from theopening pitch until the Ladner bats camethrough with enough timely hits to win 5-0.

The championship game was a rematchagainst Cloverdale who were looking toavenge their only loss of the tournament.

The Spurs had played an extra inninggame earlier in the day and was short onpitchers for the final. Ladner took advan-tage and scored early and often on route to adecisive 11-1 victory.

Throughout the season, the Red Sox dis-played good skill, matched with enthusiasmand a hard work ethic.

The roster featured Drake Carruthers,Greg Scott, Gord Cooper, Mackenzie Falk,Justin Mackenzie, Ethan Silvey, TylerAndrews, Thomas Costin, Jared Krueger,Will Robinson, Matteo Corea, JacksonGoodman, Jordan Dawson and DaelenMagcalas.

The team was coached by BrianYamasaki, Trevor Falk, Jon Andrews andRay Beisick.
