Delta Hospital has its multi-million dollar emergency depart-ment expansion to better serve thecommunity, but wait times haveincreased.

dictatorship.”The ex-premier delivered

a familiar message, sayingmany small businesses andaverage citizens that don’tearn a substantial wagewould be hit the hardest.

Vander Zalm describedhow he ended up as theFight HST leader afterexperiencing incrediblefrustration when he heardnews the Liberal govern-ment had reached a dealwith Ottawa to blend theGST and PST into a singletax, which would apply tomany goods and servicespreviously exempt.

Noting the tax will onlyencourage the growth ofthe underground economy,he said the province hasno right to pass its taxing

authority to the feds.“We’re turning things

over to the feds that belongto the province. We’re turn-ing things over to the fedsso they can make moremoney. The $1.6 billionthey’re giving us is nothing. The extra income tax they’llcollect, just because we’retaking on the HST, accord-ing to my account, will bein the order of $2 billion ayear in extra income tax,”he said.

“People will argue thatin Ottawa it’s all our moneytoo, but when you startsending them more thanwhat we already are, we’reat the losing end, so it’stotally wrong.”

Fight HST organizerChris Delaney explained

the initiative is not just a“one shot” attempt to stopthe HST.

He noted the petitionis legislation with severalparts, including telling thegovernment to repeal theagreement it signed withOttawa. The second partof the proposed bill is toreinstate the PST, while thethird part is to refund HSTmoney already collected.

“The petition is reallyPlan A, the carrot. We’regoing to give the govern-ment the opportunity todo the right thing and voteaccording to the wishes ofthe people. But as you’venoticed in the last while, this government hasn’t beenknown to do the right thing,so we didn’t want to com-pletely rely on their goodwishes,” he said.

The next part of the

strategy is what Delaneyrefers to as Plan B, or “thestick,” which is to launch arecall. A recall can’t beginuntil 18 months after thelast election, so it wouldn’toccur until November, heexplained. Thousands ofpeople have already signedup to be volunteers to targetone or two ridings. One ofthose could be the premier’sriding, suggested Delaney.

With more than sevenweeks left in the 13-weeksignature gathering cam-paign, the petition is poisedto hit the 500,000 mark, equivalent to more thanone-third of all voters inthe last provincial election, according to Fight HST.

Delta South MLA VickiHuntington, who attendedMonday’s rally, was recog-nized by Delaney for hersupport.

ministry recognizes theexceptional work of ERphysicians, nurses and otherprofessionals. While heappreciate the doctors areattempting to make theircase for increased resourc-es, discussions betweenhis ministry and the B.C.Medical Association areongoing, he said.

“As part of that process, the ministry and BCMAwill jointly determine whereadditional resources areneeded most, just as we didin 2007 when we increasedthe number of full-timeequivalent staff across theprovince by more thanseven per cent, with DeltaHospital seeing an increase.I would also like to notethat across B.C., ER visits

have increased by an annualaverage of approximatelytwo per cent since 2005,”explained Falcon.

Government and healthauthorities are turning toinnovation to deal withincreased pressures, said theminister.

The ministry notes thatas a result of a pay forperformance pilot in fourFraser Health ERs, patientsare being treated and dis-charged at a faster rate.

Falcon said discussionsbetween the BCMA andministry are ongoing, andthe ministry has commu-nicated numerous times inrecent weeks with the asso-ciation. Falcon said he metwith the president of theBCMA last week.

Over the years, Delta-Richmond East MP JohnCummins and Ernie Crey ofthe Sto:lo First Nation havetraded shots over nativefishing issues.

Cummins has accusedSto:lo fishermen — par-ticularly Cheam band mem-bers — of illegal poachingand black market sales offood fish.

But in a display of soli-darity last Friday, Crey andCummins stood togetheron the deck of a seineboat for a common cause:Fighting fish farms, whichthey believe are primarily

responsible for the decima-tion of Fraser River salmonstocks.

Crey and Cummins leftSteveston aboard the 80-foot Pacific Viking, whichwas shepherding a 26-footcanoe filled with youngpaddlers — the youngesta 13-year-old boy — toVancouver Island to joinAlexandra Morton in hermarch to the legislature topressure the B.C. govern-ment to put curbs on fishfarming.

“When it comes to sav-ing wild salmon, I thinkI’m pretty much on thesame side as John,” saidCrey, who is the fisheriesadvisor for the Sto:lo Tribal

Council.“We’re here in support

of Alexandra Morton andthe good work she’s beendoing,” said Cummins, whono longer fishes himself butwho still holds a commer-cial fishing licence.

When Elena Edwardsheard Morton was walk-ing from the north tipof Vancouver Island toVictoria to lobby for changein the way fish farms oper-ate in B.C., she wanted tohelp and organized a canoetrip. Since leaving Hope, her group has collectedhundreds of signatures on apetition calling for change.

When Crey heard aboutthe venture, he called

Cummins, who arranged forErling Olsen to accompanythem on his 80-foot seineboat.

Olsen has been fishingFraser River sockeye since1958. He has seen fluc-tuations over the years insalmon stocks but has neverwitnessed anything likewhat happened last year, when a return predicted tobe 10 million ended up atjust 1.3 million.

“I’ve never seen a wholerun disappear like that forno reason,” he said. “That’sthe highest drop in history, Iwould say.”

Morton and her support-ers converged at the legisla-ture Saturday.

A mobile blood-alco-hol laboratory could helpsave lives on B.C. streets, according to a group push-ing to have such a unitnamed in honour of AlexaMiddelaer.

The four-year-old Ladnergirl was killed byan alleged impaireddriver two yearsago.

This Fridayevening, her fam-ily and friends arehosting a meetingat Morgan CreekGolf Club in SouthSurrey to unveiltheir plans for“Alexa’s Bus,” avehicle that wouldbe dedicated togathering evidenceat crash sites wherealcohol has been afactor.

The unit would employspecially-trained officers.

“It’s very difficult work,”said Steve Barrett, an orga-nizer of the event. “In B.C.,we have no specializedvehicle (and) officers tobe equipped to investigatethose accident scenes.”

Such mobile labs existin parts of the U.S., Barrettsaid.

Friday’s event is designedto raise awareness about theconcept and raise money toget the idea off the ground,he said. Those who plan toattend are asked to register

in advance by [email protected].

Two weeks ago, SolicitorGeneral Mike de Jongannounced proposedchanges to the province’simpaired driving laws. Ifpassed, they will make

B.C.’s penalties for impaireddriving the most severe inthe country.

In memory of Middelaer,de Jong announced a newprovincial goal: to reducealcohol-impaired drivingfatalities by 35 per cent bythe end of 2013.

Alexa’s parents, Laureland Michael Middelaer, were on hand as de Jongannounced the stiffer penal-ties. The couple has workedtirelessly to bring awarenessto the issue and amend theprovince’s drunk-drivinglegislation since losing theirdaughter in May 2008.

Changes have been madeto the interchange of high-ways 17 and 99 in an effortto increase road safety.

The move came after ahorrific head-on crash onHighway 17 just south ofthe interchange in February.

On Feb. 19, three peopledied after a minivan goingthe wrong way on Highway17 between Highway 99and Ladner Trunk Roadcollided with anothervehicle. The Dodge Caravancarrying two men enteredHighway 17 heading southin the northbound HOVlane. The van crashed into acompact car, killing a Deltacouple. The driver of the

mini van also perished inthe crash.

The passenger in themini van, a 42-year-oldChilliwack man, sustainedserious injuries and burns.

Investigators said alcoholwas a factor in the collision.

In March, Delta counciland the Delta police boardsent letters to provincialTransportation MinisterShirley Bond requesting theministry review the inter-change to see if anythingcould be done to preventsimilar crashes in thefuture.

Last month, the ministryimplemented a number ofchanges to prevent driversfrom accidentally drivingsouth in the northboundHOV lane.

A “Wrong Way” sign wasinstalled at the HOV lane, pylons were installed on

the overpass to emphasizethe division of the northand southbound lanes, and

dashed lines and directionalarrows were painted onthe road to guide motoriststurning left onto Highway17 from the Highway 99off-ramp into the appropri-ate lane.

A number of newregulatory signs were also

installed at the south end ofthe intersection to preventdrivers from entering thewrong lane.

At last week’s policeboard meeting, membersvoted to send a letter ofthanks to the minister foraddressing the concerns.

Mail survey replacesonline questionnaire

Delta council decidedthis week to try a lowertech method of surveyingTsawwassen residents aboutthe area plan.

At Monday night’s meet-ing, civic politicians votedin favour of disregardingthe results of an onlinequestionnaire and issuinga new one by mail. Thenew questionnaire will beadministered and tabulatedby a professional opinionfirm.

Controversy has sur-rounded the online surveysince a problem was detect-ed last month.

Ken Kuntz, director ofparks, recreation and cul-ture who was acting chiefadministrative officer whenthe problem was discovered, told council the issue wasbrought to the attention ofmunicipal staff on April23. The online survey wasfound to not be recordingsome answers properly ornot at all.

Kuntz said the problemwas traced back to a cod-ing issue when the surveywas created. He said stafffailed to double check thework and the error wentunnoticed until later in themonth.

“That was a very unfor-tunate circumstance,” hesaid.

All 80 residents thatresponded to the surveywere advised of the situa-tion and that the results willbe disregarded, Kuntz said.

Last week, Mayor LoisJackson apologized for theerror.

“This error has obviouslyhad the effect of undermin-ing the credibility of theTsawwassen Area Plan pro-cess with some members of

the public,” she said. “It isimportant that our work beconducted in a professionalmanner and that the publicis assured of this.”

Many residents com-plained about the onlinesurvey and a complaint wasfiled with Delta police.

CAO George Harviesaid Monday night the newsurvey will be mailed out toTsawwassen residents in thenext few weeks. The pro-fessional opinion firm willphrase the questions and thecompleted surveys will bemailed to the company tobe tabulated.

The survey could costanywhere between $5,000and $15,000 depending on

its complexity.Opponents to the pro-

posal to redevelop theSouthlands spoke outagainst the move followingthe council meeting.

“It is another example oftaxpayers being forced topay for staff and council’sineptitude,” said DanaMaslovat, one of the orga-nizers of Southlands theFacts, a community groupformed to represent thoseagainst the rezoning of theSouthlands. “The mainquestion — whether theSouthlands should remaindesignated as agricultural— could be asked at nosignificant cost during theupcoming by-election.”

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

Fear the domino.Delta’s notice to Metro Vancouver that

it wants to bargain with its own civicworkers will usher in a new, and unpre-dictable, era in labour relations.

The notification period is 24 months,so the next round of negotiations willstill fall under the regional umbrella, butunless something unforeseen happens,Delta will go on its own soon enough.

This independent approach, which isalso being embraced by several otherLower Mainland municipalities, fliesin the face of the coordinated methodthat has long been considered the bestmodel because it doesn’t pit one jurisdic-tion against another, at least not openly.Dealing with public sector workers in aone-size-fits-all style kept everybody onthe same page, particularly when it cameto wages.

The drawback was always a lack ofindependence, meaning Delta had to goalong with decisions of the group even ifthey weren’t exactly what the municipal-ity or its workforce had in mind.

Once it goes on its own, Delta willenjoy that local autonomy, but it willcome at a price as local governmentswill be at the mercy of each other whensetting wages. Once a contract is settled— and usually only deals that favourworkers are consummated quickly — thedominoes begin to fall in the other juris-dictions.

Years ago, when school boards stillhad the power to set property tax rates, they also negotiated with their ownteachers. All it would take in this dis-trict-by-district set up was for a teacher-friendly board somewhere in the prov-ince, whether it be in Dawson Creek orDuncan, to provide a generous salaryincrease for every other bargaining unitto point to it and demand similar com-pensation.

They didn’t often get it, but they prob-ably ended up closer than if they hadbargained in a vacuum.

Suffice to say, it worked so well theprovincial government eventually tookover the whole process. (To be fair, givenVictoria was also paying those salaries, there was other reasons to bargain as oneentity.)

Now that Delta is headed in that direc-tion you can bet it won’t be long beforethe CUPE local here points to a contractin Port Moody or Burnaby or somewhereelse in the region and says, “Us too.”

Local autonomy means civic politi-cians in these parts won’t be beholdento Metro Vancouver’s labour relationsbureau to finalize a deal, but that doesn’tmeans their regional brethren still won’thave the ability to stick it to them.

I used to know a guy who had astrange love for taunting people. Idon’t know why, but he had someweird pathological need to findsomeone’s breaking point, and pushthem right up to it. I haven’t heardanything about him in decades, butI think he must be working as astrategist for the B.C. Liberal party.Always nice to see someone turn ahobby into a career.

I don’t know how else to explainthe Liberals’ Nixonesque tendencyto make bad situations worse. Theyfumble more than a Crisco-soakedquarterback. Although, for oneshining moment, when SolicitorGeneral Kash Heed steppeddown (following revelations thatmembers of his campaign staffhad committed a breach of theElections Act during his campaign

last year) it seemed as though theLiberals were actually going tohandle something with a modicumof grace.

Then a little voice whisperedin the Liberals’ ears, “Wait a min-ute, we’ve got to find a way toscrew this up.” And voila, GordonCampbell jumps the gun onreinstating Heed, only to have itrevealed a couple of hours later theinvestigating special prosecutor is amember of a law firm that donatedmoney to Heed’s campaign. Bravo.Fortunately, Heed had the goodsense to again step down, and so,for now, the focus is back on theHST debacle.

With all the baggage the Liberalswere already carrying in Delta,it’s no surprise the response to theanti-HST petition has been, well,Zalmtastic (sorry). It seems theday Wally Oppal lost the electionto Vicki Huntington may havebeen one of the luckiest of hislife. Had he won, his constituencyoffice would be reminiscent of the“reveal” scene in Murder on theOrient Express. Imagine what itwould be like for his staff. They’dleave work each day looking likethey were walking out of a First

World War frontline trench. The question many people are

still asking is why the Liberalsagreed to adopt the HST knowingthe potential firestorm it wouldcause across the province? Was itthe lure of $1.6 billion from thefederal government? Was it becausethey firmly believed it was such agreat idea that people would justignore the deceptions leading up toits inception? Or, did the Liberalsbelieve British Columbians are sopassive they would just shrug theirshoulders and obediently open theirwallets?

I’m guessing all of the above, but moreover, I think the HST isactually just a clever way of feed-ing cash into the pockets of B.C.’smanufacturing and forestry indus-tries without contravening NAFTA— a secret subsidy, if you will.

Nevertheless, I still maintainthat Bill Vander Zalm’s anti-HSTpetition will fail in its stated goal, regardless of how many signaturesare acquired. The HST is here tostay, for better or worse. However, the HST petition may succeed inserving as a much needed wake-up call for the Liberals. Scaredstraight, one signature at a time.

Oppal should be thankful he’snot at centre of HST revolt

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Re: Complaints not wor-

thy of police’s time, letter tothe editor, May 8

When air horns scare aninfant and cause extremestress for the infant, it is aconcern. Non-emergencynumbers are used for non-emergency issues; should911 had been used I couldsee a problem. The offi-cer on May 3 mentionedin the letter saw the B.C.Children’s Hospital releaseform.

Air horns are not neces-sary to announce a scorebut some feel they need tohave one. We don’t hearthe people cheering loudlyor unknown cars drivingdown the road honking; wejust hear the cars parked inpeople’s driveways and airhorns.

These air horns have

ruined our enjoyment ofthe game as it has made itimpossible to sit and watchas we have to tend to a dis-traught child. Should thegroup have listened whenfirst approached on April25, the police would nothave been involved. Instead, someone ran outside andset off the truck alarms andhorns.

A quick blast of a coupleseconds is not the issue;it is the long, repetitiveblast that causes the issue. On April 25, air horns, car horns and car alarmswere used simultaneouslyto announce the game waswon.

Later, when trying toapproach a neighbour, they would not listen. “Idon’t talk to losers,” wasthe response. I was able tospeak to one lady who was

willing to listen to the rea-son for the complaints; toher I say, “Thank you.” Thepolice were not called onlast Wednesday’s game aswe thought after speakingto this lady others wouldunderstand since you areall close knit. We thoughtthat maybe by the nextgame the reason would havebeen understood and someunderstanding would beshown.

Maybe if you had toforce feed your child forover a week and go to hos-pital with an infant thatstopped eating and drinkingbecause of stress you mayunderstand.

All we’re asking for isto keep it to the one quickblast. It’s not an unrea-sonable request, or so wethought.

How it works:A vibration platform is a resistance machine providing an outcome similar to ‘workingout’ with free weights. The vibration platform forces your body to have involuntarymuscle contractions and depending on the speed and frequency chosen, you canhave thousands of muscle contractions per minute. This muscle activity burnscalories and stimulates blood and oxygen flow through your body.

Scientifically Proven Benefits:- Improve circulation- Strengthen core muscles and build lean muscle mass- Build bone density- Burn calories and lose weight- Reduce back pain- Combat arthritis- Reduce cellulite- Improve flexibility, mobility and balance- Recover from injury faster

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Re: Springs revision pro-

posed, May 5And so it begins. Again. The Tsawwassen Springs

development has found itnecessary to make somechanges. The HST, a taxthat is supposed to be goodfor business, has suddenlybecome problematic. Gee,we sure didn’t see that onecoming.

I’m pretty sure thisarticle helps spell out the“fears” most people inTsawwassen have aboutthese planned projects. Nomatter how many meetingsyou attend, no matter howmany of your fellow com-munity members sing thepraises of, no matter howmuch a project is wanted orunwanted, it can change.

Case in point: A housein my neighbourhood soldabout two years ago. Adevelopment variance per-mit application sign wason the property for manymonths, asking for permis-sion to make changes tothe property. The new own-ers received permission tomake the changes, whichwould give the house extrasquare footage and changethe appearance of the out-side. Basically it was arenovation.

One day constructionstarted. As time passed, the house got smaller andsmaller and smaller. Then itwas gone. A new house wasbeing built. A new housewasn’t supposed to be there.

What is to keep CenturyGroup from discovering

sometime in the future theSouthlands project justcan’t happen as approved?Maybe there are unexpectedfinancial problems, anunexpected tax, a naturaldisaster. Whatever theexcuse, the project can’tgo forward as originallyplanned. To help solve theproblem there will be moredensity, less greenspace.

As the article states,“Once construction hasstarted, it’s far easier for adeveloper to get approvalfor something that mayhave been rejected earlier.”

In the end the develop-ment will be whatever thedeveloper wants. Whatyou get is not always whatwas expected or originallyapproved.

J. McKay

Editor:It is very easy to get

people to join you in aneffort to lower taxes as Bill

Vander Zalm proves. Onthe other hand, I wouldfeel rather hypocritical ifI would sign the petition

and then turn around anddemand more money foreducation and health care.

Taxes pay for it all.

Public doesn’t always getwhat has been approved

A10 The Delta Optimist May 12, 2010

Name: Trudy Buzdon-Barber Age: 37

Occupation: Mom of a 2 year and 5 year old and a Saturday Roaming RascalsLeader.

What is the activity? Delta Triathlon Training Clinic and the Delta Triathlon

Where and when does it take place? The Clinic was held at Winskill Aquatic &Fitness Centre, Ladner Leisure Centre, the Run Inn and on local road routes; itran January 10 to April 18. The Triathlon was on April 24th.

How often did you participate? Three times a week over four months.

Why did you decide to do a Triathlon? I always wanted to do one. The clinicwas the perfect opportunity to be coached in swimming, biking and running!

What did you like best about the Clinic? The coaches were amazing! Theywere skilled, positive and fun! I loved knowing that there was going to besomeone there three times a week to coach me and teach me new trainingskills.

What did you like best about the Triathlon? It was such a great experience: thecourse was not intimidating and there was a range of racers from pro's to firsttime participants like me. It was so encouraging to see my husband and twolittle girls outside the pool waiting to cheer me on to the bike transition area.It was pretty chilly out but my family was determined to stay until I crossedthe finish line! That gave me the extra energy I needed to keep going. All thevolunteers along the route were so wonderful with their cheering and bellsringing! It was extremely rewarding to finally cross over the finish line! I felta sense of accomplishment to go along with my wobbly legs. My goal wasto finish within 2 hours and I completed the race in 1 hour 44 minutes and 44seconds!

How did the 2010 Triathlon benefit your life? It allowed me to make timefor myself, to exercise and to become more active! I was also able to meeta great group of people with the same interest. When I started the trainingclinic, I could not even run for a minute straight. By the end, I was able to run5km without stopping. That in itself was a huge accomplishment for me. Iwould highly recommend the Delta Triathlon Training Clinic to anyone who isinterested in doing this event. If I can do it, so can you!

What other things do you do to keep active? Play with my children, walk, andswim.

Did you know the Delta Triathlon is a short course race, often called a sprint?Adults swim 700 meters, ride their bike for 20 kilometres and then run fivekilometres. The race attracts a wide range of competitors. Many, like Trudy, use this as a catalyst to improve their fitness and some are competitiveathletes. The combined swim, bike and run disciplines are excellent crosstraining for long distance runners, bike racers and track athletes as well asthose training for longer distance triathlons such as the half and full ironmancompetitions.

For more information about how to be active in Delta, call Parks,Recreation & Culture at 604.946.3300 or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca

Victor’s a good name fora boy. Venus is a good namefor a planet. And Venice is agood name for a city.

But none of them belongson a Scrabble board.

Being proper nouns, however, they may end upthere anyway — courtesy ofa new version of the gamethat will not only allowproper nouns, but alsowords spelled backward.

“So,” says my husband, who has also heard thenews, “what about some-thing like suneV? Youknow, Venus spelled back-ward? Do you think you’llget triple points for a wordthat’s a proper noun andalso spelled backward?”

“I have no idea,” I hiss.I hiss, of course, because

I am what you would call aScrabble queen. No, makethat a Scrabble king. In my

household, at least, I reignon the Scrabble board — nobragging intended.

No one in the house canbeat me. Again, not that I’mbragging.

“This is such a STUPIDidea,” I inform the husband.“Who came up with thisidea, anyway? Someonewho knows only 12 com-mon nouns, no doubt, andfeels it necessary to plunkdown the word Bill. OrMark. Or Candy.”

The husband pondered.“You know,” he said.

“Those are all also commonnouns. You know... you canpay a bill. Or mark a paper.Or eat some candy.”

I glared. This, of course,is something Scrabble kings— and Scrabble queens— are known to do whensomeone challenges theirword choices. They glare.

“OK!” I said. “Howabout Newfoundland? NowNewfoundland will bepermissible, for crying outloud!”

The husband pondered.Again.

“No, dear,” he said.

“Newfoundland is 12 let-ters. You only get seventiles. You’d have a hardtime adding on to some-thing else to come up withNewfoundland.”

True enough. But thepoint is: Scrabble is a rec-reational institution. Anda recreational institution— be it Scrabble or chessor Parcheesi — should notbe tinkered with.

“Imagine the outrage,”I said to my husband, “ifsomeone decided to changethe name of gin rummy torum rummy? Or if some-one decided to add 36 newsquares to a checkerboard?Or if Monopoly money wasconverted to euros?”

The husband had noanswer.

Scrabble, as far as I’mconcerned, is perfect as itis. And it’s not like there’s ashortage of common nounsout there.

The Scrabble folks willdo what they want, and payno attention to me. They’vedecided to mess aroundwith the rules, and com-pletely ignore the king.

Members of theTsawwassen Rotary Cluband Tsawwassen AllianceChurch are on a two-weekhouse-building trip toMalawi .

“We’re going to builda home while we’re downthere for a medical worker. The medical clinics thathave been built are in out-lying areas, rural villages, where there’s absolutelyno access to health care atall,” said Kathleen Beaton,a member of both localgroups who left for theAfrican country late lastweek.

The project is part ofan initiative of a Canadianhumanitarian medical reliefand development organiza-tion called Lifeline Malawi. The group has already setup medical clinics in thecountry.

“What happens nowis they have a hard timeattracting trained medicalpersonnel because onceyou have an education, youdon’t want to live in a mudhut in a village. Our teamis going to build a properhome,” said Beaton.

The house will be madeof brick and will have solarlighting, she noted.

Eight people are goingfrom the Rotary club and

church. The groups haveraised $15,000 for the proj-ect.

Chris Brooks, LifelineMalawi’s founder, previous-ly came to speak to both theclub and church members,Beaton said.

Beaton has been toMalawi before with thesame organization before, taking used eyeglasses andhelping fit people withthem.

“The poverty there is justamazing,” she said, notingit’s the fifth poorest countryin the world.

However, she did say thatLifeline Malawi, founded in2003, “has made some realinroads” in the country.

Landscapeproblems solvedLandscaping is about

more than just figur-ing out where to put

plants — it often turns intoa problem-solving project.

“The harder a problem a per-son has, the more exciting itis to fix,” says Kathy van Vliet, owner of Natural LandscapeSolutions, who talks anima-tedly about some of her morerecent projects.

In one case, the Tsawwassenlandscaper took a slopedback yard with a small con-crete patio and transformedit into a lush, tropical gardenoasis that includes a circularbrick patio, a low rock wall, soft lighting, palm trees andother plants.

“It looks just gorgeous.”

Van Vliet encourages her cli-ents to utilize the entire yard,

moving sitting areas to wherethere is the most sun.

“It doesn’t need to be next tothe house,” she says.

She also urges people tobe aware of exactly wheretheir property lines are whenplanting trees.

“You’re not allowed to planttrees on the municipal prop-erty,” she says. “And some-times it’s halfway into youryard.”

When planting trees, vanVliet also recommends keep-ing in mind how large theywill grow, something a pro-fessional landscaper will beable to help with.

Van Vliet says she sometimesacts as a consultant, help-ing choose what types ofplants will work in the yardand where to place them, butthen leaves the planting upto the client.

“There’s a solution for everyproblem,” adds Steve Battellas he looks at pictures of ayard he and his landscapingcompany completely trans-formed.

At 32, Battell has spentnearly half his life workingto make homeowners’ frontyards and backyards betterand more beautiful. Whilehe works in a managementcapacity now, doing every-thing from designing unorth-odox patios to dragging hisworkers out of restaurantswhen it’s time to get backto work, he still has markson his hands from the manyyears of hard, exacting work.Battell says one of the keys

to being a good landscaper isbeing able to put a custom-er’s ideas into practice.

“You’ve got to combine whatthey want with what canwork,” he says.

Because one customerwanted a patio that didn’tlook like anything people hadseen before, Battell createda pattern he figures thereisn’t even a name for. Thedesign looks like it’s partzigzag, part parquet and a bit

of maze. The patio ended uplooking unique, and surpris-ingly, quite good.

Battell says another impor-tant factor in landscaping isgetting a feel for the client’sbudget.

In 2009, Battell completedone of his most ambitiousprojects. The backyard con-sisted of two concrete decksand looked vaguely likeAlcatraz. In a job that even-tually cost $80,000, Battellused a bobcat, a crane andan excavator to completely

remake the yard.

A crane was used to plantthree large trees, decks weretaken out and the yard wasoutfitted with a fire pit, a hottub and a gazebo.

Not all projects are that largeand involved. Battell says healso caters to people thatwant to make a few improve-ments to their yard, butaren’t quite ready to fork over$80,000 to get it done.

A few tips for green thumbsFrom planning early and mulching to what to plant and how often to water, here are some tips to keep your garden blooming

Gardening is — ifyou excuse the pun— rapidly growing

into the number-one NorthAmerican hobby.

Maybe we’re trying to savemoney by growing our ownveggies or maybe garden-ers are returning to the soilas a means of working off

stress. Whatever the reason, gardening is one of the most“fruitful” returns on invest-ment one can make.Unfortunately, novice gar-

deners can end up spendingmore on seeds, tools and theother doodads required for astartup patch. The good news is there are a

few tricks that can save youmoney while still turning outa good crop.

Here are some tips to get yougoing:

Plan early

Plot out your garden beforeturning the first spade ofearth.

Several websites make iteasy to plan your gardeneither at no cost or free forthe first 30 days.

I’m particularly partial toGrowVeg.com, which helpsyou plot out the amount ofspace you’ll need for eachplant and where each shouldgo in relation to other plants.

The Farmers’ Almanac is stillone of your best guides towhen you should start plant-ing and what kind of weatheryou can anticipate for thegrowing year.

Understand your land

Before you shell out a tonof cash for new plants, askyour neighbours what plantsthrive in the soil of yourregion.

Keep in mind plants appro-priate for your growing zonemight not work in your gar-den due to variations in soilcomposition, micro-climate,pests, sunlight exposure andwater availability.

Visit your local nursery orcall your municipality tolearn how to get an analysisof your soil and recommen-dations for suitable plants.

Dig deep

Digging a deep garden bedcan increase the number ofplants you grow and ensureroots have plenty of room tothrive.

Mulch

Mulching your garden - orcovering the surface layer

with plastic, wood chips, etc.— will feed the soil, keepthe soil and plant roots cool, retain moisture to reducewatering and prevent weeds.

Mulching also will cut downon the amount of time youspend watering and weeding.

Plant from seeds

Starts are 10 times moreexpensive than seeds andoften are sold long afterthe plant should have beenunpotted.

(Never buy starts with rootsgrowing through the bottomof the pot.)

Starting seeds indoors ischeaper and will give you ajump on the season.

Save even more money bycreating your own seed-starting pots.

Save and swap weeds

Seed packets often containfar more seeds than you

actually need, so considerstarting or joining a seedexchange in your area.

You can also harvest andstore seeds for use the fol-lowing year.

Choose profitable plants

If you have limited space, consider planting producethat costs the most in a storeor at a farmers’ market.

Monetarily, you get the bestbang for your buck by grow-ing cilantro, salad greens, chives, tomatoes and squash.

Be sun savvy

You’d be surprised how oftenexperienced gardeners put ashade-loving plant in full sunor a sun-loving plant in theshade.

Daylight is a moving target,so it can be difficult to ascer-tain the best location foreach plant.

Before plotting out your gar-den, spend some time study-ing the movement of the

sun over that patch of land, paying particular attention tothose areas that are heavilyshadowed.

Smart watering

Consider installing anEvapotranspiraton (ET)Controller, if you have anin-ground sprinkler system. These systems use real-timeweather data sent by satelliteto control when your sprin-klers turn on and off.

This can cut your waterusage by up to 30 per cent.Controllers costs between$300 and $400, depending onsystem size.

Install drip irrigation

If you don’t have an in-ground sprinkler system,consider installing a drip-irrigation system.

The water won’t evaporateas quickly and plant rootswill receive a more thoroughsoaking.

2010 colours ‘livelyand cheerful’

The forecast for2010 is for lots ofblue skies, says acolour expert with

a leading Canadian paintbrand.

“The No. 1 colour is a clearsky blue,” said JenniferJones, marketing commu-nications manager for CILDecorative Paints.

“We’re seeing this light bluecoming out everywhere ...It symbolizes optimism andnew beginnings.

“It’s also associated withnature and the environment. So it gives us a feeling ofgetting away from it all.”

Jones described the hotcolours for 2010 as “reallylively and cheerful.”

“We’re going to be seeingmore energetic colours allaround us in the comingyear, not just in home decor, but on the fashion runways,

in all types of consumergoods,” she predicted.

“People are becoming a littlemore adventurous with theircolours. And we’re encourag-ing them to continue that.In general, the colours have

been a bit more muted in thelast year or two,” she pointedout.“Now they’re a lot cleanerand a lot brighter.”

Green demandsbeing fulfilled

As the demand forenvironmentallyfriendly productshas increased,

suppliers have had to stepup and deliver.

Phil Cervi, who ownsArmadio Kitchen and Bath, has been in the business formore than 20 years.

Within the last five to 10years, he said there hasbeen a steady increase in thenumber of customers look-ing for greener, eco-friendlyproducts for their homes.

With increased demand, sup-pliers have started increasingthe number of eco-consciousproducts on the market.

Cervi deals almost exclusive-ly with Nickels Cabinets, aRichmond-based, family-runcompany established in 1979.

“I’ve been selling this brandfor a long time,” he said.

“But over the years they haveintroduced more green prod-ucts.”

Three years ago, he said, the company established aspecific line of eco-friendlyproducts, and has now incor-porated those green featuresinto all its products.

Cervi said the particleboardthe company uses is sourcedfrom a mill in Smithers thatuses 100 per cent recycledmaterials.

The finishes are low VOC(volatile organic compounds)and HAPS (harmful airborneparticulate)-free.

The new water-based varnishmatches the durability ofsolvent-based coatings anddelivers improved mark andscratch resistant.

The eco-friendly finishes areodour free and non-yellow-ing, and contain no formalde-hyde or isocyanate (a compo-nent of polyurethane).

This makes the products notonly environmentally friendlybut also safer for workersand consumers.

Lighten your loadFun ways to exchange, sell and recycle items you no longer need

You know whatspring cleaninggets you? Stuff.Lots of stuff to get

rid of. Sure, you can takethe usual routes — hold agarage sale, cart it off toGoodwill, take out a classi-fied ad — or you can enter-tain yourself in the processof purging.

We’ve cooked up a few funideas for lightening yourload. You know what they sayabout all work and no play.

Host A Swap Party

Swap parties are a greatexcuse for socializing in thename of recycling.

And while you’re splurgingon that third slab of brie, youcan rationalize that you’resacrificing your bikini body tosave the environment.

Swap parties work best if youchoose a category — purses, home accessories, sportinggoods, CDs, whatever.

Everyone brings one or moregently used items in that cat-egory and gets a chance totake home an equal numberof their friends’ things.

You can make up your ownrules, but one method is togive each guest a ticket ortoken for every item he orshe brings.

Put the guests’ names ontheir tickets.

Allow everyone an hour or soafter arriving to peruse thegoods.

Then when the swap begins, have them put their ticketsnext to the items they’d liketo have.

If more than one persondesires an item, put the tick-ets into a hat and draw one.

Hold A Charity Auction

This is a variation on theswap party theme, except yousell your unwanted things toyour friends and donate the

proceeds to charity. It adds an element of com-petitive excitement as youand your BFF go paddle topaddle over that covetedGucci belt.

In the interest of full disclo-sure, it should be reportedthat this idea was brazenlylifted from the letters sec-tion of Better Homes andGardens magazine’s Marchissue.

It was just too good not toshare.

If you have a big crowd, youmight want to run the salemore like a professional auc-tion.

Assign each guest a biddingnumber, and give that persona paddle with the numberon it.

Have someone record thewinning bids for each num-ber, and collect at the end ofthe evening.

Whatever doesn’t sell goesback home with the owner orcollect the unwanted itemsand give them to charity.

Exchange It

Who says gift exchanges areonly for the holidays?

A white elephant giftexchange is a fun way toswap your stuff with yourfriends or family members.

And without the attendantstresses of the Christmasseason, a non-holiday gath-ering would be that muchmore enjoyable.

White elephant gift exchang-es have become associatedwith joke gifts, but really, awhite elephant is somethingof value that you no longerwant or can’t afford to keep.

So in a real white elephantexchange, the gifts are usedgoods that others mightwant.

Rules and procedures vary, but here’s one way to do it:

Everyone brings one gift-wrapped item, and all thegifts are piled together.

Have the participants drawnumbers to indicate theorder in which they’ll choosegifts.

When your number comesup, you either pick a gift fromthe pile, open it and show itto everyone or you steal onethat someone has alreadyopened.

If your gift is stolen, you getto either pick again or steal.

(No, you don’t get to stealback the gift that’s just beentaken from you, althoughyou can reclaim it if you getthe chance in a subsequentturn.)

Warning: This game worksbest with a group that has ahealthy sense of humour andfair play.

Good-natured wrangling andbackstabbing are all partof the process, and if someparticipants don’t understandit’s all in good fun, things canget ugly.

Get Creative

There’s nothing novel aboutturning castoffs into crafts.

What is new are the avenuesfor doing so.

The Internet has opened awealth of opportunities forcreative types to share ideasand show off the fruits oftheir labour.

Can’t think of what to do withGrandma’s old canning jars?A quick Google search for

canning jar crafts will prob-ably turn up more projectsthan you have jars.

One good resource is CleverNesting (clevernesting.com),a blog maintained by the cre-ative duo of Devona Brazierand Colleen Penn.

The two Akron, Ohio, resi-dents share ideas, experi-ences and instructions forcreating everything fromCrock-Pot cosies to heart-shaped crayons.

While the blog isn’t spe-cifically devoted to reusingitems, the two clearly have aheart for recycling.

Some other good onlineresources are the recy-cled-crafts sections ofCraftGossip.com, CraftBits.com, AllFreeCrafts.com,make-stuff.com andFamilyFun.com.

Or why not form your ownonline group devoted to turn-ing trash into treasure?

Google, Yahoo and Facebookare a few places where youcan start groups devoted to acommon interest.

You might even use them toswap materials as well asinspiration.

Feedback

Delta council gave final approval last week to a 3.98 per centproperty tax increase for this year, which will translate into anadditional $84 for the average Delta home. While property tax bills

will arrive in the mail in the coming weeks, homeowners have untilJuly 2 to pay them. The Optimist asked:

What do you think about the tax hike?

Paul TaylorI think they waste themoney, but we have topay it.

Last week we asked you:

Should there be elementary academies?15.69 per cent said yes.68.63 per cent said no.

••

15.69 per cent said give it a trialperiod.

You can have yoursay on this issue

by taking part inour web poll at www.

delta-optimist.com

Jennifer JobesI think tax hikes are neces-sary for our economy to bestable and for us to enjoythe perks that we do enjoyliving in Ladner. It’s a nicesmall town and it’s welltaken care of. Nothing isfree.

Miguel FloresPretty much as alwaysI don’t agree with thisbecause we are alreadypaying higher taxes thanour neighbours, the U.S.We are losing competitive-ness.

Marnie HuckvaleI guess they have to geta high tax hike over withbefore they have an elec-tion year next year.

Minaz KotadiaI believe it’s way too highat this moment in timewhen most of their expens-es are also simultaneouslygoing higher.

took her career to an entire-ly different level whenshe joined the VancouverRhythmic SportiveGymnastics Club under thedirection of 1984 Olympicgold medalist Lori Fung. The Ladner native didn’twaste any time in becominga novice and junior provin-cial champion in her firsttwo years of competing.Soon after, she made herinternational debut by rep-resenting Canada at a com-petition in Mexico City.

She became a memberof the national rhythmicgymnastics team in 1992and would eventuallyearn “A” team status byplacing third at the EliteCanada Championshipsin Winnipeg. She culmi-nated her career at the 1994Commonwealth Gamesin Victoria, winning threemedals — a gold in theteam event and bronze inribbon and ball.

TeamNorth Delta Huskies

BasketballThe Huskies capped a

dream season in 1975 bycapturing the provincial“AAA” championship witha 72-57 victory over theRichmond Colts. A tightbattle saw the Huskiespull away by outscoringRichmond 20-12 in thefourth quarter.

The road to the final pro-vided plenty excitement asNorth Delta edged FraserValley rival North Surrey52-51 in the semi-finalsthanks a pair of Mike Kenisfree throws with just 15seconds remaining. Earlier, the Huskies eliminated

defending champion OakBay.

The successful run com-plete a memorable debutseason for rookie headcoach Bill Edwards whobrought his team togetherto overcome the loss ofstarting centre and teamcaptain Paul Steele due toinjury. Steele would laterbecome an Olympic goldmedalist in rowing.

PioneerAlbert Huff

Harness RacingA lifetime resident of

Ladner, Huff was responsi-ble for the re-birth and con-tinued success of harnessracing at Paterson Park.

The venue was noth-ing more than a trampleddown loop until 1948 whenHuff headed a group thatwould take harness racingto another level entirely. The quality of racesimproved dramatically, asdid Paterson Park with agrandstand, floodlights andbetting machines all addedover the next 20 years. Huffcontinued his commitmentto harness racing right upuntil his death in 1967.

Huff also was a WorldWar I veteran and servedon Delta council. He wasnamed Delta Citizen of theYear in 1966.

In 2008, he was rec-ognized by the B.C.Standardbred HarnessRacing Hall of Fame for hisenormous contribution tothe sport.
