Q. In our Ranch style house built in 2000, we keep the house at at 68˚. Our bedroom feels as if it is 3˚ cooler. What would cause this?

Listed below are a few things you can look into before calling the furnace installer:

1. – Check to see the registers to the room are not under furniture or behind a curtain. 2. – Check for air leaks in the all duct around the furnace and in exposed duct in the basement. Air leaks here will diminish air flow to the entire house. Foil tape the duct joints and any holes you find and repair any lose joints and tape. Cover duct openings to storage rooms and unfinished areas not yet in use. 3. – Look for the return air grill in the room. If it does not have one you may need to leave the door ajar or raise the bottom of the door to clear carpet. This will allow air out of the room so more air can flow into the room. 4. – Once these are all ok then you can balance the air movement with the registers around the home. If this doesn’t work a supply air damper in the duck may work to redirect air flow to the room. 5. -The worst case is the duct to the room is sized incorrectly or it has come apart at a hidden joint in the ceiling space. For these repairs you will need to call the furnace installer.

We live in an older home. The cold air is so apparent through the winter months. Does putting plastic over the windows really work? Is there any specific product you would recommend or procedure to follow? Anything that cuts down on the air infiltration around windows and doors will help make the house more comfortable and cut down on energy costs. Before putting plastic over the windows I would check to make sure that the weather stripping that came with the window is in place and in good repair. If not that should be replaced first. There may also be several areas that could be caulked either inside or out. You should also check the glazing if it is an older wood sash. Once those things are done, covering the window with plastic is a low cost alternative to cut down on air infiltration. One of the better brands is 3M.

How do you fix a sidewalk when a tree root is making the sidewalk crack and lift?

There are many options available for the solving of this problem. First, you can repair the existing sidewalk. This requires removing the old sidewalk, grounding the tree roots or cutting them so they are much lower than the surface, placing sand under the area and re- pouring the cement. This is a very fast means of re-doing the area, however, the problem can come back. Adding reinforcement to the new concrete can help minimize future problems. Second, would be to re-direct or re-route the sidewalk itself to avoid the tree roots completely. The last option would be to remove the sidewalk, the tree or both.
