you are forced to be more creative and deliberate with your marketing efforts. As a reminder, your business has many options that are cost effective or even built into your investment with the Chamber. Outside of our daily referrals to people looking for reputable businesses, there are

opportunities for your business to reach new and current residents and other businesses through- out the year. Here are some tips to help your business get more exposure:

Check our calendar online www.castlerock.org for upcoming opportunities to network

The Town of Castle Rock dressed up in its finest to kick off the holiday season at Starlighting 2011 on November 19th. Area

businesses competed in a decorating contest with four categories: Best of Show, Best Small Town Theme, Most Creative and Best Use of Lights, which complimented the year’s theme, “Light Up the Season!”

The following businesses earned the coveted awards: Best of Show was awarded to Castle Country Assisted Living; Best

Small Town Theme, Find Your Stash; Most Creative, Gene’s Muffler and Auto Body and Best Use of Lights, Cherokee Ranch & Castle. All Chamber member businesses and those in the surrounding area were encouraged to participate by decorating the

outside of their businesses by Starlighting. “A business doesn’t necessarily need to be located in the downtown area to com-pete,” said Pam Ridler, President and CEO of the Castle Rock Chamber.

The weather cooperated for the most part, turning chilly at sunset. More than 12,000 braved the cold to participate in the

Starlighting Ceremony hosted by Gary Shapiro of Channel 9. Town, County and business sponsors joined the public ceremony with a skit, poem, carols and well-wishes. The Jolly Old Elf himself made an appearance to the delight of thousands.

Due to the efforts of the Downtown Development Authority, a new downtown canopy of lights was unveiled after the lighting of the Star. This canopy replaces street lighting between Third and Fourth Streets on Wilcox and most certainly produces a

festive mood for holiday revelers and shoppers!

Thanks to the Douglas County Parks department, the Plaza

for the Douglas County Veterans Monument was finished by Veterans Day 2011 and will be ready to receive the 14’ bronze statue by Veterans Day 2012.

Though we are making great headway in fund raising by reaching more than $35,000 toward our goal of $120,000, the Douglas County

Veterans Monument Foundation (DCVMF) needs the help of our citi-zens to bring to reality this tribute for military men and women who have passed, veterans living, and those currently serving our country.

Monetary gifts for specific items for the monument, e.g., f lag poles, flags, branch of service seals, etc. are possible as well. All gifts are

tax deductible as the DCVMF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

ployers Support of the Guard and Reserve (“ESGR”) presented the law firm of Folkestad Fazekas Barrick & Patoile, P.C. with Patriot Award Certif icates of Appreciation. The awards were

accepted by the directors in the law firm: Jim Folkestad, Ernie Fazekas and Mark Patoile.

ESGR awards this prestigious national honor on behalf of the Department of Defense. According to Major General (Retired) Don Marrow, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to

publicly recognize employers who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered the nation’s call to serve.” Established in 1972,

the ESGR promotes cooperation and understanding between reserve component members and their civilian employers and assists in the resolution of conflicts arising from employee’s

military commitment. More than 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve are currently serving their country and state on the war on terror, homeland defense missions

and humanitarian relief efforts. There are currently about 15,000 members of the Reserve component in Colorado. These reserve members represent over 50% of the total U.S.

military. The law firm was nominated by its managing director, Aaron

Barrick (second from right). Colonel Barrick is the State Judge Advocate for Colorado and the Senior Legal Advisor and

General Counsel to

the Adjutant General for Colorado. In this capacity, he oversees

all legal personnel in the state militia and is responsible for all

matters of state and federal law impact-ing the National

Guard and its more than 4,500 military members and their

families.

Colonel Barrick has served more than 20 years in the active

duty Air Force and the Colorado National Guard and enjoys the cooperation, respect and accommodations of his employer when called to assist with military contingencies.

“Being recognized for the Patriot Award is a great honor”, said Ernie Fazekas. “I am very grateful for our military men and

women and am proud that we can support Aaron and the Colo-rado National Guard in their call to duty.” Folkestad Fazekas Barrick & Patoile is a regional full-service

law firm strategically located between Denver and Colorado Springs, in Castle Rock, Colorado. Founded in 1972, it is one of the most established and largest law firms in Douglas

County and the surrounding region. The firm and its attorneys hold the highest rating of AV-Preeminent Lawyer by the attor-ney rating system of Martindale Hubbell. To learn more about

the law firm and the Patriot Award, please refer to the firm’s website at www.ffcolorado.com.

parents are unable to buy them a gift. The Douglas/Elbert Task Force “Santa’s Sharing” program helps by organizing sponsors for families in Douglas and Elbert counties. Individuals, businesses

and groups willing to share the joy of the holidays are urged to “adopt” a local family going through difficult times. These families are a part of our community, our neighbors and friends so we hope

you will help us help them. Last year 186 families were adopted, the need is even greater

this year. There are several sponsor opportunities. For informa-tion and an application to sponsor a family, go to http://www.detaskforce.org/santassharing.htm or call the Task Force

at 303-688-1114. The Douglas/Elbert Task Force is a non-profit organization that

It is official, thanks to local support throughout the whole campaign from such entities as Castle Rock Development

Company, the Town of Castle Rock and Castle Rock Chamber, the St. Jude campaign to raise money for its research hospital sold out of tickets, raising $1.1 million for the kids of St. Jude!

This is truly an amazing feat considering this is the first year for the campaign in this area.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It is the only comprehensive

cancer center devoted solely to children, and no family ever pays St. Jude for care. For more information, go to stjude.org and follow St. Jude on facebook.com/stjude and twitter.com/stjude.

The sheriff’s office has developed an on-line survey that will help them deter-

mine the community’s perception of their performance. The survey also provides an opportunity for citizens to make commenda-tions and suggestions for improving law enforcement in unincorporated Douglas County. Please take a few minutes and com-plete the short survey that can be accessed at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DU4XTL2NZ

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the dates for the 7th Community Safety Volunteer Academy March 13 – May 17, 2012. The CSV Academy will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm-10pm and four Saturdays from 8am-5pm.

The training consists of over 100 hours of field and classroom instruction and graduates contribute a minimum of 16 hours of volunteer time each month. Graduation is set for May 17, 2012.

The Community Safety Volunteer Program began in April, 2006 and has since graduated 35 Douglas County

citizens who are involved in supporting the work of law enforcement profession-als in the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office.

A CSV since 2007, Bill Wilson states “It provides me and others a real opportu-nity to give back to our community and

hopefully contribute to providing a safe environment for the families of Douglas County.”

The Community Safety Volunteer program is community policing in its

most basic form – a structured way for citizens to participate in helping provide for the safety and security of

their own community. CSVs support the major activities of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office – Patrol, Investigations,

Detentions, Civil, and Community Resources – activities where their unique expertise and or life experience are of benefit.

CSV Larry Walters, graduate of the 2010 CSV Academy, says, “The camaraderie enjoyed among the group of people from widely varying backgrounds is fun. The quality and attitude of its members, the good leadership and the appreciation shown by the

Sheriff 's Office are some of the reasons I enjoy being a CSV. This is a most satisfying way to serve the citizens of Douglas County.” If you are interested in becoming a part of this outstanding group of individuals and contributing your time and your unique life

experience and expertise in support of law enforcement in Douglas County, visit the DCSO website at dcsheriff.net and click on the Community Safety Volunteer link for personal requirements and additional information. Interested individuals should submit a completed application as soon as possible since the background investigation may take 2-3 months to complete.

If you have questions or require further information, please contact CSV Coordinator Walt Wohlgemuth at 303-814-7063 opt. 1 or send an e-mail to [email protected] .

Heather Browning happened onto Castle Rock during a family

vacation in 2007 from California, decided to set roots here in Colorado. Castle Rock is the perfect family place. It is community based, with an old fashioned feel of civic respon-

sibility, neighborhood involvement, with outstanding schools, and those are just a few of the reasons that Heather decided to make Castle Rock her home.

Heather joined the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce and has contributed greatly in a very short time with anniversary

calls, Business After Hours, grand openings and ribbon cuttings, the Colorado Art Fest and the new business expo in February 2012.

Her business, Colonial Benefit Group, was founded in 2000 in California and continues to thrive and become an experi-

enced, creative, independent insurance brokerage, and benefit consulting firm. Its services include all aspects of business insurance with added expertise in human resources.

They provide their clients with a steadfast commitment to proactive communication and excellent customer service. Now, living in Colorado, it is the perfect spot to open another

agency. Heather is excited to partner with the Castle Rock Chamber

of Commerce. “Our goal is to work to further its mission, support local business, and promote a high quality of life in the community.”

Heather is the very proud mother of two children, Josh 10, and Kaylee 5, whose activities keep her busy indeed. She

has a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University in Business Management and Marketing, and is licensed in several states. She has a background teaching dance,

aerobics, and is a certif ied spinning instructor. Heather has been a tireless worker for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Association and Santa Claus, Inc., a charitable association

who provide clothes and toys for needy families at Christmas. Heather is proud to be an Ambassador for the Chamber of

Commerce and looks forward to participating in activities which build business relationships and that further create the wonderful neighborhood communities in Castle Rock.

Few things are more critical to business success than an

effective, systematized sales process. The second session of the Chamber’s 2011-2012 Business Boot Camp, held on the evening of November 8, was devoted to sales and marketing.

Instructor Mike Tafoya, CEO Coach at Estrada Strategies-DTC,

walked the class through the differences between marketing, advertising

and branding. While the terms often are used interchangeably, in reality each is a unique, critical task in support of the sales process. With those elements in place, the sales process itself is a continuous loop, with defined steps and techniques that turn prospects into clients.

At the close of the session, participants identified two principal

takeaways: 1) business owners could not afford to skip steps in the sales process and 2) sales and marketing activities should not be undertaken randomly but must be integrated into a system.

This is the first in a series of Business Boot Camp training highlights by Brian Leugs, President of Business Communications Support,

Boot Camp Mentor and Castl e Rock Chamber Member.

Keep abreas t of training information being imparted each month by Boot Camp ins tructor, Mike Tafoya, of Estrada Strategies .

This is a Castl e Rock Chamber-sponsored program for local businesses.
