Potted History

Spain colonised the Philippines in the 16th century. The US took control in 1898 after the Spanish-American war. The path to independence began in 1935 but was interrupted by Japanese occupation in 1942, before finally arriving after the second world war. Mass demonstrations in 1986 ended 21 years of rule by Ferdinand Marcos and installed Corazon Aquino as president.

Political pressure points

Islamist rebels have fought a separatist insurgency in the mainly Catholic country for decades on the southern island of Mindanao. The New People’s Army, the armed wing of the Communist party, has targeted establishment officials in rural areas since 1969. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was re-elected in 2004, but is under opposition pressure over the disputed election and her husband’s alleged corruption.

The Nottinghamshire Context

Most new arrivals from this country come to Nottinghamshire for economic reasons. They are often involved in the health industry and NHS, working in hospitals and private care homes. Often they are in skilled jobs such as nursing, especially as there have been restrictions for unskilled migrants from outside the EU.

Education in the Philippines

Education in the Philippines has a similar system to that of the United States, as the Philippines was colonised by the Americans from 1898 to 1945. Filipino children enter public school at about age four, starting from Nursery and then moving to Kindergarten. At about seven years of age, children enter a 'primary school' (6 to 7 years of study). This is followed by secondary school (4 years of study). Students then sit for the College Entrance Examinations (CEE), after which they enter collegiate school (3 to 5 years).

Primary school is called 'Elementary school'. It consists of six levels, with some schools adding an additional level (level 7). Primary education in the Philippines covers a wide curriculum. The core subjects (major subjects) include Mathematics, English, and Makabayan (a mixture of Social Studies and Filipino). Other subjects include Sciences, Music, Arts, and Physical Education. Starting at the third level, Science becomes an integral part of the core subjects.

Secondary education in the Philippines is largely based on the American schooling system. It consists of four levels. Secondary schooling is compartmentalised, meaning each level focuses on a particular 'theme or content'. Secondary school is often called 'High school'. The first year of High school includes five core subjects, namely, Algebra I, Integrated Science, English I, Filipino I, and Philippine History I. The second year of High school includes Geometry, Biology, English II, Filipino II, and Asian History. The third year of High school includes Trigonometry, Chemistry, American Literature, Filipino III, and World History, and the fourth year of High school has Calculus, Physics, World Literature, Filipino IV, and Economics. subjects include Health, Advanced Computer, Music, Arts, Technology and Home Economics, and Physical Education.

In exclusive schools, various languages are offered together with Computer programming, Literary writing, as well as other subjects.

As of now, there is no government-sponsored entrance examination for Tertiary schools, and all schools, public or private, administer their own College Entrance Examinations (CEE). After finishing secondary education, students have a choice of either continuing their education by taking two or three years of vocational courses, or going to college or university.

Technical/ Vocational school is a school offering practical courses to enhance skills. They offer short programmes or two year courses on technology subjects e.g automotive technology, electronic technology, nursing aide, hotel and restaurant management, computer technology, drafting ,etc. In the Philippines, colleges or universities are called Tertiary schools.

Information about the Filipino (Tagalog) Language

Tagalog, with the stress on the second syllable, is the national language of the Philippines. It is the most spoken Philippine language in terms of the number of speakers. Filipino is a standardised version of Tagalog and is the principal language of the national media in the Philippines. In 1962 it was made the country’s official language and given the new name of Filipino.

Tagalog is an Austronesian language with about 57 million speakers in the Philippines, particularly in Manila, central and southern parts of Luzon, and also on the islands of Lubang, Marinduque, and the northern and eastern parts of Mindoro. Tagalog speakers can also be found in many other countries, including Canada, Guam, Midway Islands, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, UK and USA.

Tagalog uses the Latin script. Tagalog is the mother tongue of about 15 million people, most of whom live in southern Luzon in an area that includes Manila. Its study has been strongly encouraged by the government and it is estimated that over 75 percent of the population at least understands the language. It is the primary language of public education. As Filipino, it is, along with English, a co-official language and the sole national language. Tagalog is widely used as a lingua franca throughout the country, and in overseas Filipino communities. However, while Tagalog may be prevalent in those fields, English, to varying degrees of fluency, is more prevalent in the fields of government and business.

The three centuries of Spanish rule in the Philippinies left a strong imprint on the vocabulary. Mesa (table), tenedor (fork), papel (paper), and asero (steel) are only a few of hundreds of Spanish words in Tagalog.

Here is an example of Filipino Literarure.

Sample text in Filipino

Ang lahat ng tao'y isinilang na malaya at pantay-pantay sa karangalan at mga karapatan. Sila'y pinagkalooban ng katwiran at budhi at dapat magpalagayan ang isa't isa sa diwa ng pagkakapatiran.
