Grade Level: First Grade Time not to exceed: 60 minutes
Day: 1
Parent Guidance
The following activities are intended to be a review. These activities were chosen to be
accessible to both you and your child. You know your child and yourself, so monitor if
either of you become frustrated. Discontinue the activity. Please make note of this to
share with your classroom teacher, so adjustments can be made as necessary. Feel free
to do the activities in the order of your child’s preference.
English Language Arts
Activity 1: Independent Reading
Have your first grader read the decodable Nat’s Cat out loud to you.
Activity 2: Reading Retell (Story Champs) Read the short passage, Hurt, aloud to your first grader while pointing to the
pictures that go along with the story.
Next, fold the sheet in half so that your student is only able to see the pictures.
Then, have your first grader tell you the story. Listen to see if your first grader
names each of the parts listed below. If they miss a part of the retell, use the
questions provided to prompt them.
Character: Who is the story about?
Setting: Where did this story take place?
Problem: What was his/her problem?
Feeling: How did he/she feel about his/her problem?
Action: What did he/she do fix his/her problem?
Ending: How did the story end?
Activity 3: Reading Response

Ask your first grader the following questions:
Who are the main characters? Where does this part of the story take place? (Ask this question for each
chapter.)
What are the main events that happened in the story?

Math
Activity 1: Math Game – Choose from one of the Math Games Provided (All
materials for games are included in this packet.)
1. Doubles Memory: This game will help your first grader practice their doubles
facts. If you choose this game, you will need to cut apart the Doubles Fact Cards.
Directions:
Doubles Memory is played just like regular Memory, but your student is trying to
find a match between the doubles fact and the sum. Your first grader should lay
the cards face down in rows. Each person will take turns choosing two cards. If
the player gets a match (the double fact and the sum), the player keeps the
cards. If it is not a match, the player returns the cards to the same spot and it
is the next player’s turn. As your child tries to make matches, be sure they are
finding the answer to the doubles fact. The player with the most matches at the
end of the game is the winner.
2. Add Up Tiles: This game will help your first grader practice addition
combinations. If you choose this game, you will need to cut out the add up tiles.
(See game sheet for directions.)
3. Tens Go Fish: This game will help your first grader practice combinations to ten.
If you choose this game, you will need to cut out the Primary Number Cards. (See
game sheet for directions.)

Add Up Tiles A game for 2 players
All tiles are placed face down beside the board. Players take turns to choose a tile and cover two spaces on the board that add to the total on the tile. The tile can be laid vertically or horizontally. A tile card cannot be placed on top of another tile. When a player picks up a tile and can’t find a place to lay the tile, the other
player is the winner.
