Date of Lesson: 10/20-10/22

Common Core Standards Used ● CCSS.LA.9-10.RST.01: Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to the precise details of explanations or descriptions.

· CCSS.LA.9-10.RST.05: Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms (e.g., force, friction, CCSS.LA.9-10.RST.02: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; trace the text’s explanation or depiction of a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text.· CCSS.LA.9-10.RST.02: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; trace the text’s explanation or depiction of a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text.

Objective (or Content Language Objective) 1. After reading information on a website and analyzing my answers, I can construct a definition and provide examples of natural selection.

T/F pd. , and both 8/9 classes⅘

The following students were assigned detention Friday because they did not turn in their fossil essay:If you did not go to detention you now have Saturday school :( (I don’t think there’s a way to get your name off of that list)If you have your essay, turn it in

Do Now10/21

1. Herds of elk live around Rocky Mountain National Park. Bears are predators of Elk. Explain how elk have evolved with the ability to run faster.(Write 2-3 sentences in your notebook.)

2. For less than 1 minute, pair with your shoulder buddy and share your explanation.

Today’s Agenda

1. Turn in any completed work 2. Do Now3. Vocab practice4. Bird Q5. Natural Selection/Index cards6. Antibiotic Resistance7. Exit Ticket(correct review TEST)

Page 5: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

Vocab Practice Challenge: 4 min1.You have 1 OR 2 numbers on your white

board that correspond (go with) the number of a definition.

2.Work with your group on matching the correct word with its definition. Look at the word bank and write your answer on your board.

3.When ready, send 1 person up to write the word into its definition

Answer questions

Page 9: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

Check in about #1-2

#1: “Raw material” for Darwin’s theory of evolution???

#2: Speculation???

Write your answers to #1-2 on the whiteboard and show it to the class.

Page 10: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

Partner work

Ask each other:Where did you find that answer? How do you know that?

Check answers for #1-4, move onto #5-8.

Page 11: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

#7-8 on Review Test

Can a bird grow its beak to adapt to its environment over a lifetime?

Is a bird like Pinnochio???Do we agree with Lamarck and acquired traits?

Page 12: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

As you watch these scientists studying the effect of a drought, a selective pressure, on the finches, answer the following:

1)Did the finches change their beak size in one generation? Did the birds grow longer beaks?

2)Did the average length of beaks change from one generation to the next? Did the birds with the unfavorable trait die and not pass traits on?

Do Now10/22

1. Why do you think scientists who study evolution and natural selection believe it is important to study antibiotic resistance?

Write 2-3 sentences justifying your answer.

According to natural selection, a species that doesn’t have necessary adaptations to changing environments will most likely:A. become dormant (sleep/hibernate)B. reproduceC.become extinctD.fossilize

Page 24: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

Answer

C.become extinct

Page 25: DCIS Montbello - Daily Lesson Plan Template

Explain

A species that doesn’t have necessary adaptations to changing environments will most likely go extinct. Beneficial traits help organisms survive and are passed on. However, if organisms never adapt, never become better, they are unable to live long enough to survive and reproduce (make babies).
