PENDANT LIGHTS
EDISON BULBS
CABINET LIGHTING
RECESSED LIGHTING
Jerry Yarnell from Yarnell electric, along with some local builders, dis-cussed what was trending in lighting for new home construction and remodeling projects. here are the top trends:
People are asking for additional recessed lighting in addition to their main lights in each room. For example a great dramatic center room light might be used in a bedroom then people are up-grading for additional recessed lights; Yarnell suggests an additional recessed light in each of the four corners of the room and possibly some additional for a specific reading area. Bedrooms don’t need as much lighting as a kitchen but the recessed lights will make any room brighter and appear larger.
Another trend that continues to be popular is under cabinet lighting especially in kitchens. Some new home buyers are opting for lighting with remotes that can be dimmed or can change colors. If you need to save your energy costs, turning to LED under cabinet lighting would be a great option.
Hanging pendant lights in the kitchen over a bar area is extremely popular and will create a statement in your new kitchen. Swapping out pendant lights can make a big difference in the look and feel of your current home without a lot of effort. Black is a new favorite neutral. It’s chic, edgy and making a space for itself in modern color palettes. Clear pendants are a charming combination of rustic and industrial design. Some people choose to add an element of fun by hanging three at vary-ing heights.
The exposed Edison bulbs are also very popular and help create a sophisticated look. You can also find Edison bulbs in LED.

the lbrighten up basement with shelving, lightingLook up “basement” in the dictio-nary and you’ll see cellar, vault — even crypt. But with a little effort and some design flair you can make your basement come alive and reclaim valuable living space.
Create the workout room you al-ways wanted. A dramatic home the-ater. Or a spacious office, playroom or craft area. If you can re-imagine your basement, you can remodel it.
Here are hints on how:1. Make a plan: An accurate floor
plan will help you visualize the end result, especially if you’re dividing rooms, adding a pool table, a large sectional or a projector and theater seating.
Check to see if you’ll need a permit for improvements.
2. Banish water: Does your basement pass the smell test? If your lower level has moisture problems, your nose will know.
Besides a musty smell, moisture leaves other clues: dark, saturated concrete block walls, flaking paint or condensation. Consult a basement waterproofing contractor if you have any concerns before you begin remodeling.
3. Elevate your ceiling style: Stained or sagging ceilings also point to excess moisture. Identify the cause and make repairs. Then replace the old ceiling with coffered ceiling tiles. With the look of sunken panels, they add depth and distinction.
4. Beautify floors and walls: Beau-tiful, versatile flooring options are abundant today. Before you choose, think about how you’ll use the space. Consider structural issues, too.
Creating a playroom or cozy retreat? If moisture isn’t a worry, add warmth and softness underfoot with carpeting or an area rug.
If your sub-floor is smooth and even, vinyl is hard to beat. Whether in tile, sheet or plank form, the styles are versatile and the material is wa-ter-resistant or waterproof.
If you’re adding a basement gym, consider rubber interlocking tiles. They absorb shock and you can install them yourself.
You’ll discover abundant wall-cov-ering options, too, such as wain-scoting, paneling and beadboard. Subtle grass cloth wallpapers add sophistication. Peel-and-stick cork wall tiles create design interest and absorb sound.
Whatever your choice, be sure to waterproof the walls before you cover them.
5. Make a statement: Once you’ve landed on the look you love — whether it’s traditional, farmhouse or mid-century modern — personalize your decor to make it your own.
Display cubes or built-in shelving with lighting are great options for showing off your trophies, baskets, pottery or collectibles. For color and warmth, mix and match a variety of pillows and plush throws.
To personalize your walls without making a permanent design com-mitment, consider wall decals. Their elegant patterns and bold images add instant interest. You can even make your mark with an inspiring, oversized quote.
Use every type of lighting — general, task and accent — to bring your basement out of the shadows. Mirrors are another great way to add light and the illusion of space.
DIYers have never had more ver-satile design tools and materials to choose from. So don’t let your lower level go unloved and unused any longer. Let the transformation begin.

maintenance, he says. Today’s quartz is also versatile when it comes to color.
“They’ve come a long way over the years,” Hickey says. “We sell a lot of the white with the gray veining. The beauty of that is it’s a lot harder than a natural marble.”
There are also new porcelain products that come in slab form, which is becoming popular, Hickey says. It is also hard and scratch resistant. “Once they are installed they are very durable,” he says. “As a countertop, it is as hard as granite.”
When it comes to cost, it is a matter of “how much of the type of stone is in the world,” Hickey says. Avail-ability and type of material determine what a customer will pay. The cost ranges from bread-and-butter to mid- and high end, and, lastly, exotic.
The process of replacing countertops today is rela-tively mess-free, Hickey says. A typical job, from when the initial measurements are taken to installation, should generally take about four weeks.
“Typically you are going in to take out laminate countertop, which is basically plastic over wood,” Hickey says. “No cutting is done in the house, so there is minimal dirt and dust.” Prior to installation, all countertops are cut to dimension off site.
A sealer may be used to reinforce the material’s existing durability, Hickey says. For instance, there is a misconception that the use of a sealer on a granite countertop is simply to make the surface shine, but that isn’t necessarily the case.
“The reality is, it finds the super-micro pores that are in 90 percent of natural granite products and seals it so liquids cannot penetrate the surface,” he says.
Customers often ask if countertops should match the cabinetry. Whether you are reusing, refurbishing or buying new cabinetry, Hickey recommends having a drawer or door handy when it is time to pick out countertop material and color, especially if you are extending the countertop up the wall or installing a complementary backsplash.
“A lot of people are using a tile backsplash,” he says. “And, typically, that is picked out after the cabinets are picked out. You don’t want something that is going to clash, but since you are spending a good amount of money on countertops, you want that to be the focal point of your kitchen, not your cabinets.”
In some instances, homeowners will create an eye-catching, large island of granite or quartz that serves as a focal point, Hickey says, and the perimeter is a more generic color.
When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, it pays to do your research, he says, and to shop locally. Essentially, it comes down to the adage, “You get what you pay for.”
HHomeowners who want to replace outdated counter-tops or who are tackling an entire kitchen remodeling frequently turn to natural stone products. Three types top the list, and for good reason.
Granite, quartz and porcelain have become go-to materials for many homeowners in the area, says Dan Hickey, owner of Natural Stone Creations in Franklin.
“Granite is God-made, porous and needs to be sealed after installation,” he explained. “The beauty of granite is you can cut on it (however it will dull your knives), and you can set hot pots on it directly from the stove.”
Granite is also a great choice for outdoor applications where there is a lot of direct sunlight, Hickey says, because it does not fade.
A close second, when it comes to durability, is quartz. As a nonporous material, quartz can be a bit more resilient than granite, doesn’t have to be sealed and is low-

FARMHOUSE SINKS
FREESTANDING BATHTUBS

TRENDY FINISHES
plumbers supply in Franklin recently discussed kitchen and bathroom plumbing. here’s what is trending:
Free-standing tubs are incredibly popular for new home construction and remodeling, often replac-ing traditional bathtubs. There are many styles and materials to choose from. The freestanding tub exudes a sense of luxury that built-in tubs can’t offer.
You can choose a pedestal base, claw foot or modern soaking tub; each brings a different style to your new bathroom.
Farmhouse sinks are another popular trend right now. They are more accommo-dating due to the exposed front and large basin.
You can choose from a double or single bowl. The large bowl allows for additional room for larger pots and pans, while the double bowl allows for food prep on one side while you are able to wash on the other. The large front basin has proven to be very stylish in new and remodeled kitchens and laundry rooms.
The trend in faucets is leaning toward the industrial look. This is very popular in open kitchens. Combined with clean lines, this makes an industrial design statement in more contemporary spaces.
Popular finishes for 2020 are matte black and elegant gold. The matte black is part of the simplistic look with clean lines and few accessories. The black fixtures paired with white creates a clean, minimalistic look. Elegant gold fixtures are gaining popularity and create a high-end look in your bathroom or kitchen.

six hints to keep your home safe in extreme weather
SHElTER FROM THE STORM
STORY BY NAPSI | PHOTO FROM ADOBE STOCK
AAs the climate changes, rough weather
— tornadoes, hailstorms and the like — that used to trouble single areas of the country now occur in places that never expected to see them.
Consider these statistics:Rain: Over the last 50 years, much of
the United States has seen increases in downpours, reports the National Climate Assessment Federal Advisory Committee. The heaviest rainfall events have be-come denser and more frequent, and the amount of rain falling during the stormi-est days has also increased. Since 1991, the amount of rain falling has consistently been significantly above average.
Hail: While hail has been most common in the “hail belt” covering the Midwest and Great Plains states, it is increasingly occurring in other parts of the country, just as tornadoes are not confined to “tor-nado alley” between the Rocky and the Appalachian Mountains. Hailstorms in-flict billions of dollars in damage yearly in North America, and the cost will continue to rise, according to Insurance Journal. Last year was the 11th year in a row in which the damage from severe storms exceeded $1 billion in the United States, and 70 percent of that cost came from hail, explained Ian Giammanco, a research meteorologist for the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.
The costBetween 2011 and 2017, 84 extreme
weather events in the United States caused at least $1 billion each in damage.
Although damage from extreme weather of one kind or another can generally be felt all across the country, you can take measures to help protect your home and family.
What you can do1. Look out for your windows and
doors. Get storm windows and consider storm shutters.
2. Check for cracks. Make sure the building envelope is intact and there are no holes in the walls or around the windows and doors. In high-wind storm events, holes in the building envelope can result in sudden pressure equalization that can lift off the roof.
3. Clean out clogged gutters and down-spouts regularly.
4. Prevent damage from flying objects. Remove all dead and dying limbs from your trees, and secure lawn furniture, trash cans, flowerpots, sheds, doghouses, playhouses, swing sets and boats before severe storms.
5. Ensure there’s sealing around any chimneys or vent pipes.
6. Keep your roof in top shape. An effective roof can shield your home from the storm. According to a recent Harris poll, while 80 percent of homeowners believe that a roof is important to the overall protection of their house, only 48 percent perform routine maintenance and examinations of the health of their roof. Of course, it’s recommended that roof maintenance should be conducted by hired professionals, rather than by the
homeowner for safety reasons.According to a study done by the Na-
tional Association of Home Builders, an asphalt roof typically lasts up to 20 years if maintained appropriately. However, the day will inevitably come when all residential roofs need to be repaired or replaced. When it does, it’s wise to use top-quality shingles designed for perfor-mance against severe weather. “Severe weather activity further solidifies the need for weather performance, especially wind resistance, in roofing shingles,” explained Scott Campbell, vice president of sales at IKO, a manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing products. “A roof is the most essential aspect of shelter. It silently endures high winds, hail, heat, cold, moisture and flying debris, all while keeping what’s under it safe. If a roof fails, everything under it may be at risk of damage.”
The futureAs for what’s to come, according to
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, windstorms are likely to become more common and more severe. Models project there will be an increase in the number of strong hurricanes as well as greater rainfall rates.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office predicts the cost to the federal gov-ernment for responding to climate-related disasters could reach $35 billion annually by 2050. So, consider today what you need to do to protect your shelter from the storm.
