    CSE Diary for 24.01.2013

Colombo stocks dipped during the morning session by 13 points

before a partial recovery in the index. However index still ended in

the red with a dip of 5 points as Sri Lanka Telecom, Peoples

Leasing, Lanka Orix Leasing and Asian Hotels and Properties led

the top weighted losers for the day. Some volatility was noted in

the S&P SL20 index, but finally closed broadly flat with only a

    marginal dip of 1 point.

The decline in the interest rates has resulted in an increase in localinvestor participation while the uptrend in the bourse during the last

week has led some foreigners to be on the selling side. Similar to

the rest of the days during the week today also the bourse

recorded a net foreign outflow. However local investors who were

late to enter the market should not be disheartened by this factor

as the market still trades at attractive valuations with the market

trading at a PER of 10x on FY14E earnings. We believe investors

should step into the attractive Banking and Finance sector and the

Hotel sector which are likely to record strong growth figures in

earnings during the current earnings season.Strong local interest inCommercial Bank of Ceylon led the counter

to be the top performer for the day with a single crossing of 926k

shares at LKR104.0. This was followed by an on-board deal of 131kshares dealt at a similar price. A marginal dip in the counter was

noted at close of trading of 0.1% at LKR104.0. Its Non-Voting share

too grabbed investor attention with a number of mid-sized blocks

changing hands. The counter however closed flat for the day at

LKR92.0. Further interest in banking sector counters were witnessed

with Sampath Bank and Hatton National Bank entering the top

turnover list. The former registered 2 off-market deals amounting to

250k shares at a similar price of LKR213.0 while another 100k block

was on-board at the same price. The former closed the day with a

gain of 0.4% while the latter closed flat for the day.Crossings were also recorded in John Keells Holdings of 100k shares

at LKR224.5 and Tokyo Cement of 1.1mn shares at LKR27.0.

Meanwhile retail buying interest was recorded in Environmental

Resources Investments and HVA Foods despite both counter

sclosing in the red with dips of 1.1% and 2.7%.European Stocks Pare Decline as EasyJet Advances: European

stocks pared their decline as chemical makers advanced,

offsetting Apple Inc. (AAPL)s slowest profit growth since 2003. U.S.

index futures and Asian shares were little changed. The StoxxEurope 600 Index (SXXP) retreated less than 0.1% to 288.13 at 9:19

a.m. in London.Oil Trades Near One-Week Low on U.S. Supplies, Seaway Pipeline:

Oil traded near the lowest level in a week in New York after U.S.

crude stockpiles gained and capacity on the Seaway pipeline was

    reduced.

WTI crude for March delivery was at USD95.58 a barrel,up 35 cents, in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile

Exchange at 9:56 a.m. London time.

Foreign outflow continuesamidst improving localinvestor participation

Frost damage likely to hamper January tea output- Tea broker: Sri Lankas January tea production will benegatively impacted by frost damage, a scenario caused by extreme temperature fluctuations during a very

short period of time, a tea broker in the country said. According to John Keells Tea Brokers, in addition to the

dry weather prevailing in tea planting districts, a cold wave is sweeping over the central hills that could cause

frost damage and subsequently cut production. With temperatures plummeting to well below 10 Celsius in

the past few days, plantations in the Kandapola, Agarapatana, Lindula and Talawakelle Districts have

reported frost damage. Frost damage is brought about by high day time temperature followed by very lownight temperatures,John Keells Tea Brokers said. They further noted that the tender leaves tend to freeze

when there is a rapid change in temperatures from day to night. Frost could cause extensive damage to all

types of crop, particularly vegetables which are grown extensively in an around Nuwara Eliya. The resulting

shortages could see vegetable prices skyrocketing in the coming days. Present weather is expected to

continue, the commodity brokerage said. It also pointed out that the dry weather that is prevailing could

delay the recovery of the tea bushes furtherlonger than the three monthsthat it takes under normal

    circumstances.

G-Sec to see complete overhaul this year: The Government Securities market (G-Sec) comprising of treasurybills and bonds is expected to see a complete overhaul with the establishment of an e-trading platform for

the secondary market, according the Central Bank Governor. This is amongst the many reforms andimprovements planned for 2013. According to the Public Debt Department official at the CB, general public

will also be enabled to invest in T-bills & T-bonds electronically, similar to the existing electronic bidding

process in the primary market. We are expecting to provide liquidity support for primary dealers and an

appropriate mechanism will be put in place to ensure complete underwriting of issuances, said Ajith Nivaard

Cabraal on the primary market operations adding that half-year T-bond calendar would also be issued. The

improvements to the G-Sec market could not have come at a better time when there is increased emphasis

on domestic sources (particularly in the non-bank borrowings) to finance the 2013 budget deficit. Total

domestic financing is estimated to rise 62% Year-on-Year to LKR421 bn, likely due to non-bank borrowings

(consisting largely of T-bills & T-bonds) of LKR289 bn (vs. an avg. of LKR62 bn over the past two years).

    Global News

IMF: Global economic recovery 'weakening': The International Monetary Fund has warned again of aweakening global economic recovery despite government efforts to stimulate growth. The global economy is

likely to grow at a slower rate than previously forecast over the next two years, the organisation said in its

latest report. It said it now expected the eurozone to remain in recession in 2013, having previously

predicted growth. The UK's growth forecasts have also been revised down. The IMF said continued problems

in the eurozone were weighing on the global economy. "The euro area continues to pose a large downside

risk to the global outlook,"the IMF report said. "In particular, risks of prolonged stagnation in the euro area

as a whole will rise if the momentum for reform is not maintained."

China Manufacturing Expands at Fastest Pace in Two Years: Chinas manufacturing is expanding at thefastest rate in two years, according to a private survey of companies, bolstering prospects that economic

growth will accelerate for a second straight quarter. The preliminary reading of a Purchasing Managers

Index was 51.9 in January, according to a statement from HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics today.

That compares with the 51.5 final reading for December and the 51.7 median estimate of 17 analysts

surveyed by Bloomberg News. The data suggest that economic growth at the start of 2013 will equal or

exceed its 7.9% clip in the fourth quarter, reducing the likelihood that the nations new leadership headed by

Xi Jinping will roll out additional measures to support expansion. Chinas industry ministry is forecasting a

10% rise in factory output this year, unchanged from 2012s pace.

annual deficit was 6.93 trillion yen (USD78 billion), the finance ministry said in Tokyo today. Japan is

mounting a defense of its currency policies ahead of a Group of 20 meeting next month, as officials from

Germany to South Korea express concern at efforts to weaken the yen. In an interview in Tokyo yesterday,

currency chief Takehiko Nakao said that the Bank of Japan (8301) is not undertaking a competitive

devaluation and its aim is to end deflation.

Vietnam Inflation Accelerates in January After Interest-Rate Cut: Vietnams inflation accelerated in January, limiting the central banks scope to add to last months interest-rate cut and bolster the economy. Consumer

prices climbed 7.07% from a year earlier after rising 6.81% in December, the General Statistics Office said in

Hanoi today. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of six economists was 6.95%. The central bank cut

its refinancing rate for the sixth time last year in December as the economy expanded 5% in 2012, the least

since 1999. The World Bank is concerned about the policy easing, as the country faces the risk of double-

digit inflation in 2013, the World Banks lead economist for Vietnam, said in Ho Chi Minh City this week.
