I bring up this topic, because a) I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes me happy andb) I think December can be a stressful month with the seemingly endless list of obligations.Considering these two things, the Dalai Lama quote at the top of the article and all I’ve learnedin my research, I plan to do a few things this December.

1. Volunteer alongside as many Central folks as my schedule allows with the CommunityLunch on Capitol Hill.

2. Have fun decorating cookies at Christmas Camp with people of all ages on December 13th!3. Find out what makes people hopeful during the season of Advent on Sunday mornings.4. Be intentional about spending time with my friends and having shared experiences!

News from CIM

Since Advent is a season of hope and knowing that I am only a flawed human being, I will ask

God for the grace, guidance, and patience to be present and loving in all of my good inten-

tions. May all of us at Central be happy and hopeful as we anticipate Christ’s birth!

Blessings,

David De Block

News from Church Council

The days are getting shorter and the weather less appealing, which naturally leads us to a time ofreflection on who we are, where we are, and what we’ve got to be proud of and thankful for. Luck-ily for us at Central, there has been much to celebrate this year: this summer’s mission trip toMexico, our new sign, another fantastic year of spiritual growth through Sunday school, faith forma-tion forum, confirmation and youth group, and the theology book group, the passage of I-594, andthe continued opportunity to come together as members both new and not-so-new. I have nodoubt that December will bring other opportunities for us to celebrate our vibrant and bright

community (and I’m sure I’ve missed plenty of exciting things that have happened this year!)

However, the darkness that we encounter during the season of Advent reminds us that although weoften would prefer to stay in the light and warmth, darkness is also an important part of our spiri-tual journey and growth. God is with us, even when we face difficult times - especially when weface difficult times. At this month’s council meeting, we spent a significant amount of time discuss-ing the 2015 budget. We are facing another year of significant deficit in our budget and we willneed to make some tough decisions about how we would like to fund our ministry in the comingyears. These discussions aren’t easy; it is tempting to ignore these questions and hope that it will

take care of itself. However, this conversation affords us a greatopportunity to grow as a community. What is important for usto fund as a community? What is meaningful for us to offer? Wecan believe that everything will work out (and we do believethat it will) but still engage in these difficult talks - they will helpus know each other better and grow in a way that feels right for

us as a congregation.

There will be plenty of opportunities to come together as acommunity and celebrate who we are as Central: the Christmaspageant and the evening variety show event are two coming upin December. In January we’ll get to business talking a littlemore about the budget, and we’ll try to make sure that we canfocus the conversation so that we are really getting at whatmatters: what do we want our community to look like in 2015and beyond? And how should we get there?

Additionally, the KAC Committee has been discussing ways in which we can add onto the many wayswe keep our children safe in our Sunday School, Confirmation and Youth Group programs. Some ofthe things we’ve discussed involve making sure that we do background checks annually, replace theFireside Room door with a glass one, and have healthy relationship trainings with our Confirmandsand Youth Group with a Planned Parenthood Educator.

We’d also like to know if there is parental interest where parents of young children can come to-gether and share ideas/language they use to teach their children about their bodies and selves. Howdo we teach our kids in a Christian context about the gifts God has given them? If you have ideas orwould like to learn more, please feel free to contact any of the members of the KAC Committee!

Elementary Lutherwood OvernightPutting it on your Radar!

For the last couple of years a group of Parents and Elementary Kids have been going to Lutherwoodfor a 24 hour retreat. Open to 1st through 6th graders, this opportunity has been a great introduc-tion to camp and chance to bond with fellow Centralities outside of the weekly ritual of SundaySchool and Worship. Typically this event has been organized by a parent with kids in this age range. Not only enriching for the elementary students, parents have found that this 24 hours is a way tobond with fellow parents. Please prayerfully consider putting this on your agenda and let me knowif you’d like more information. You can email me at [email protected].

“Carriers of the Light”Central’s Christmas Pageant

Our Sunday School children and youth will perform “Carriers of the Light” by Anna Laura Page andJean Anne Shafferman. This Pageant is a children’s Christmas musical inspired by scriptural passagesfrom Isaiah, Matthew, and Luke focusing on Jesus as the Light of Salvation. It celebrates the passingof God’s Light, from Mary to Joseph to the animals in the manger, from the shepherds in the coun-tryside to the wise men in the east.

An annual highlight of the Advent season, please join us on December 21, 2014 during 11 amWorship. Invite your friends and family to this event and share the joy of seeing our kids presentthe Christmas Story under the direction of our Pageant Director Jonna Farley.

We’re Celebrating EpiphanySunday, January 4, 2015

Three things to Know!

1. Costumes! Epiphany, the 12th day after Christmas, (Technically January 6th, 2015) celebratesthe visit of the three wise men to the Christ Child. We invite the children to dress up as a king orqueen for a procession into worship.

2. Cake! Following worship we’ll have a King’s cake with a small baby Jesus hidden inside. Thelucky person who gets the slice of cake containing the baby gets to make the King’s cake for nextyear’s Epiphany event.

3. Wack the Star! During coffee hour there will be star piñata for kids 12 and under to strike andenjoy.

Faith Formation Forum Schedule

December 7 - As Central once again provides volunteers to serve the Community Lunch on CapitolHill this December, we will be joined by CLCH Executive Director Don Jensen who will update us onall things Community Lunch. We will also have an opportunity to discuss some of the latest newsinvolving hunger in our community and see how Central's long-standing commitment to servingthose in need is helping struggling folks in our neighborhood.

December 14 & 21 - Join us for a two part Advent devotional andbook study using Barbara Brown Taylor's “Learning to Walk in theDark”. Advent provides us with an opportunity to learn from thedarkness that surrounds us. Taylor's book plunges headlong into thatdark space, looking for the spiritual lessons that we miss when weimmerse ourselves exclusively in the light. As usual, no need to readthe book ahead of time!

December 28 - Café Central - Join us for hotcoffee and cool conversations in the Parish Hall.

It’s hard to believe that 2015 is just around the corner! If you would like tosign up to bring communion bread for a month in 2015, please let Sandyknow. You can either bring a fresh loaf each Sunday or bring enoughloaves for the month and put them in the freezer. Sandy will then makesure a loaf is thawed for each Sunday. You can either call the office or e-mail Sandy at [email protected]. There will also be a sign-up sheetat coffee hour. Thanks for your consideration!

Where: Columbia City Church of Hope3818 S Angeline St.Seattle, WA 98118

What: Do you find yourself in the midst of transition and in need of some direction? Transitionis the process we undergo when we encounter “change”. Changes such as: starting a newjob or school, moving to a new place, making a commitment to a life partner, welcominga new member into our family, or grieving some loss. In between the letting go of the oldand taking hold of the new, we find ourselves in the “neutral zone” which can be chaotic, but can also provide an opportunity for us to look at our lives through a new lens.

Join Dr. Joe Sherman, pediatrician and veteran retreat leader, and Philip Pascual, a newcounselling psychology student at The Seattle School, as we explore how to tend to oursouls while we navigate these transitions and come to know ourselves more fully.

Details: A light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This is a free offering with asuggested donation of $20.
