I think that might be everybody, if I missed you, please accept my humblest apologies, it is appreciated that you offered your time to help us feel welcomed! I have a confession. Until this week, I didn’t know that corn had tassels that needed to be removed to prevent cross-pollination. In fact, I know very little about farming or agronomy, another thing I learned this week. This episode of learning demonstrates vividly why the ELCA sends interns in the fields. Pun intended. As much as I look forward to sharing my time, knowledge, and experience with you, I am looking forward to the many things that I can learn through our time together in this place. I have enjoyed visiting with some of you in the past weeks, hearing stories about your life and experiences and sharing in your hospitality. There is much to be learned here at Fredsville. It lives up to its name, “village of peace.” The peace of Christ, which surpasses understanding, be with you all.

PEACEFUL TIDINGS! From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church

Serving in Jesus’ name since March 1871 Blessed with heritage, vision for the future and peace in the present.

Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville August 2013

A message from Vicar Ron This has been an exciting last two weeks at Fredsville!

Angie and I are very thankful for the warm welcome that we have received upon arriving here. The house is beautiful! The food is abundant! And the welcome is beyond words! We are looking forward to spending the next year getting to know you better. We are especially thankful for those who worked on the house: Art and Bev Lupkes; Jim Wertz; Eric and Darla Anderson; Susan Sherwood; LuAnn Jones; Ann Reinicke; Jim and Jean Loger; Lance and Sawyer Loger; those who prepared our welcoming dinners: Carol Anderson, Jane Christensen, Carlyn Baugus, and Ann Reinicke, and Dan Crotty, and Liz Bergmann; as well as Sue Green and the Social Ministry Committee for coordinating the food and bags that we received, and everyone who helped us unload the truck (in record time I’ll add).

It’s hard to believe that school is about to start! Let’s send our students back to school with prayer and blessings for a great academic year! Sunday August 11th all students, preschool through graduate school are encouraged to bring their school back packs to worship. We will have a blessing of students, teachers, and backpacks during worship. All school supply donations for Bremwood should be here by the 11th as well so we can bless those supplies and get them to Bremwood before their school begins.

Bremwood Wish list for School Supplies

Help 97 Bremwood students (grades 6-12) start the 2013-2014 school year with new school supplies. One of the highlights for all students returning to school in the fall is going shopping for the new school supplies for a new school year. Although Bremwood students don’t have this shopping opportunity, we can help “set them up for success” in the new year by letting them know others care and by providing: #2 wooden pencils pens brick erasers colored pencils pocket folders washable markers dry erase markers USBs (flash drives) college ruled loose leaf paper notebooks of paper bound by tape-no spiral bound back packs for the high schools students attending Waverly-Shell Rock High School. Next time you are shopping, please pick up some things to add to our collection. In addition, monetary donations will be used to purchase school supplies. A sincere “thank you” for your support! Mystery solved! The diaper boxes are going to be used (starting in September) to represent the money donated during the second offering for "the Nest". This is the agency that donated the purple sacks for Vicar Ron and Angie's Food Drive. "The Nest" provides parenting classes for adults that are in or near the poverty level.

Q & A

Vicar Ron and Angie Poe August 2013

Q: Where did you grow up? Vicar Ron: I grew up in Kingman, Arizona, which is located in Northern Arizona about an hour and a half south of Las Vegas. Angie: I grew up in Monroe, Indiana, a small town located outside of Decatur, Indiana.

Q: Vicar Ron, when did you "hear the call" to become a pastor? Vicar Ron: I've wanted to be a leader in the church since I was young. In fact, I used to "play" church when I was young using an old story bible, some saltine crackers, and some Dixie cups of water. As I grew up it seemed like I was never going to be able to do that for whatever reason (time, money, etc.), but things seemed to work out and now I'm here. Q: Why did you choose to attend Wartburg Seminary? Vicar Ron: When I began to look at seminaries, two were recommended to me: Wartburg Seminary and Luther Seminary. I visited Dubuque and instantly loved Iowa and the community at Wartburg Theological Seminary. I called Angie on the phone from WTS and told her, "Start packing, we're moving to Iowa." Q: What does the title "Vicar" mean? Vicar Ron: Good question! A Vicar in the Lutheran tradition is a fancy name for Intern. In other Christian traditions, it has a different meaning. Q: What was your favorite class at Wartburg Seminary? Vicar Ron: That's a tough one, as I liked so many of them! Probably my favorite class has been Lutheran Confessions. The Lutheran Church has throughout their history collected what they believe, in the form of "confessions" or statements of belief. They collected these in a book called "The Book of Concord." That class is an overview of that book. It lays out what it means to be Lutheran. There's much more to it, but I don't have time here to go over it all. Runner ups to classes are Systematic Theology and Church History.

8

Q: What hobbies and interests do you have? Vicar Ron: I enjoy studying foreign languages, reading literature, and watching movies. Angie: I like scrap booking and doing crafts; along with watching movies with my husband. Q: Angie, what do you have planned for your time at Fredsville? Angie: I have enrolled in some Early Education classes at Hawkeye Community College. Q: Vicar Ron and Angie - what are your first impressions of the Fredsville Congregation? Vicar Ron: Angie and I both agree that Fredsville is the most welcoming place we have ever been. Fredsville’s hospitality is immeasurable. We are looking forward to being here the next year and getting to know everyone more.

Please Welcome these New Members!

Back to School

Education is an important part of every child’s life, and here in Iowa we pride ourselves on the quality education we provide. However, as the new school year approaches, Lutheran Services in Iowa reminds you there are still many children who do not excel in the classroom and those who never graduate from our high schools. Often times these children come from homes where poverty, abuse, neglect and other situations cause an unstable or unsafe environment.

LSI’s services such as our early childhood programs, family-centered services and residential treatment for children work to create positive environments and build stable permanency for infants, young children and teens across the state. By giving children and families the tools they need to succeed, LSI can plant the seeds of success that grow into bright futures.

For information on Lutheran Services in Iowa, visit www.LSIowa.org, or “like” us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

India Meet Rizia

A dream that never died

Rizia had a dream to attend graduate school and become a teacher. That dream was shattered when her family fell on hard times and her father couldn’t afford to continue her education. As a young girl she had to quit school – but that didn’t stop Rizia from pursuing her dream.

Although she was no longer in school, she didn’t give up on teaching. Rizia started holding informal classes with the younger children in her neighborhood.

15

Her ambition and determination continued. She became actively involved in community development projects. Because of her drive and involvement in these projects, she received a grant and was able to start taking classes again thanks to The Lutheran World Federation and your generosity to ELCA World Hunger.

Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger support projects through The Lutheran World Federation that help people like Rizia.

It wasn’t long before Rizia’s dream came true. Today she is a teacher and continues to take classes to further her education.

“Thank you for helping shape my future and give meaning to my life. I pray that you would continue to bring hope to many more lives like mine,” she says.

Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger change lives. You help people like Rizia become educated, inspired and achieve their dreams.

In India, we are working in disadvantaged communities to empower and develop female leaders. With your help, ELCA World Hunger is able to break down barriers, uphold human rights and improve quality of life – lives like Rizias.
