PEACEFUL TIDINGS!

From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church

Serving in Jesus’ name since March 1871

Blessed with heritage,

vision for the future and peace in the present.

Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville June 2016

A Note from Pastor Lisa . . . 4 Down! 1 to Go! Yep, the Dietrich’s have been celebrating another

graduation. On May 22nd Mary graduated from Dike/New Hartford High

School. It’s times like these that I find myself being nostalgic, reminiscing,

and reflecting. This accomplishment of Mary’s, while her accomplishment

is also one for the whole family, has me thinking about the many years

and the many people who have made up our family. God has sent Scott

and I so many people, young and old, who have been the voice and the

face of God in our lives. Each person has been an example of God’s love

and grace and has challenged us, supported us, loved us, shared the word

of God with us and made us better people. These pictures are just a small

reflection of the grace of God. May you too reflect on the people who have

brought you the love of God and may each of us be an example of God’s

grace to one another.

The Family Closet has new SUMMER HOURS The 1st and 3rd Saturday only from 9:30 a.m. – noon.

Trisha has created an on-line sign up for the Family Closet in hopes it helps get more people to sign up that are not necessarily in Church to use that sheet. Here is the link you can go to https://www.volunteersignup.org/CXPAW she also posted this on Fredsville’s Facebook page; at least 2 workers are needed per shift. If you have questions, please contact: Trisha Weichers at 319-939-7224 or [email protected]

Did you know? Since we opened in Sept 2015, we have helped over 200 people

from 6 different counties. We received some racking and hangers from a clothing closet

that was closing its doors free of charge. We received a $1000 grant from Grundy County Community

Foundation to purchase new socks and underwear. These items are very much in need and we cannot keep a supply very long.

Ways you can help at The Family Closet: Take donations we cannot use to Goodwill or other organizations. SHOP – we have money to spend on socks and underwear, are

you willing to do the shopping? Pick up donations at Dike City Hall or New Hartford Library Staff the closet during our open hours.

What is required of you when staffing the closet? A friendly smile and warm welcome. Willingness to accept gratitude and thanks for providing this

service, you may also get a hug or two.

That’s it! We may do some sorting of donations during the time we are open depending on the number of visitors. Some days are busier than others so bring a book to pass the time or invite a friend to come with you and have some social time together. There is no better way to see how this ministry is helping people right here in our own neighborhood. If you would like to volunteer in some way you can contact: Trisha Weichers at [email protected] or 319-939-7224 Carol Andersen at 319-989-2034 or the Church Office where a volunteer sign-up is available. Thank you to all that have volunteered and signed up!

Northeast Iowa Synod Assembly

June 10-12 Pastor Lisa will be attending Northeast Iowa’s synod assembly at Wartburg College in Waverly. The 2016 Synod

Assembly will gather for business surrounded by word and sacrament; with the theme, “Celebrating Renewal”. This year

St. Elizabeth of Hungary is honored and her devotion to serving.

Assembly events begin Friday with communion service and end

Sunday with communion service and lunch. Forums, seminars and ministry exhibits are set for Saturday.

Dr. Susan Kosche Vallem, retired professor of Social Work,

Wartburg College, will deliver the keynote address on the servant

ministry of Saint Elizabeth.

Molly Beck Dean, program director, ELCA Youth Gathering, will bring greetings and a report from the church wide organization.

Continuing Education

Part of a requirement of the ELCA is that each pastor should complete 2 weeks of continuing education each year. This year Pastor Lisa will be fulfilling her continuing education requirement May 30- June 3 and June 6- June 9th. This year pastor will be studying several different topics including a lecture series on World Religions, How Jesus became God, Science and Religion and a refresher course on Greek. NewAldaya News

"Congratulations to Jane Christiansen and Sue Green who were among those chosen for "NewAldaya's Volunteer of the Year - 2016". Jane was selected for the time she puts in as a member of NewAldaya’s Auxiliary, NewAldaya's Board of Directors, being a "Decorating Diva" and for her weekly visits to the residents. Sue was selected for the time she puts in on Thursday evenings pushing residents to the weekly Hymn Sing, for the two months of Sundays that Fredsville has the responsibility of pushing residents to chapel, and for being on the Christian Caring Committee which includes visits to the new residents in skilled care. It was noted that Sue often brings her 7th grade students along to help push the residents in wheel chairs".

NewAldaya is always looking for volunteers. Please contact Jane or Sue if you are interested. Both have found volunteering at NewAldaya to be very rewarding personally and more importantly, a way to serve Christ.

Fredsville Fellowship We will meet at NewAldaya Tuesday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m.

WELCA

Synodical Women’s Organization (SWO) Convention will be held Saturday June 18th at Wartburg College in Waverly. Watch the Sunday bulletin for further details and see Carol Andersen with questions.

June 2016

Happy Father’s Day!

Many of the boys and young men that Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) serves in our residential programs have never had a positive male role model in their lives. Recently, at a gathering of mentors and mentees, a few of these children introduced their mentors to each other. When a boy from Beloit spoke, you could hear the quiet pride in his voice. “This is Josh,” he said simply. “And he’s the mentor I’ve always wanted.” As you celebrate Father’s Day with your family or by remembering someone who served as a father figure or mentor for you, remember what you have to give to others around you: a word of encouragement, a listening ear or the gift of your time and presence. You may be surprised how much it means. You provide all these things and more through your support of LSI. Thank you for responding to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service!

LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

Building Confidence from Legos

Once a week Beloit becomes an imagination station of Legos, robotics and computer programming. That’s what happens when the passions of LSI mentors and LSI clients align. Tom first learned about LSI's Beloit Residential Treatment Center through a mission event at his church. Together, he and LSI’s volunteer staff began exploring the idea of creating a robotics group at Beloit. “You’re playing, but you’re also learning,” said Tom. “I enjoy helping them experiment and learn what is or isn’t interesting to them. It’s a great opportunity to match up their interests and passions.” As a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activity, the group also helps youth practice problem-solving skills they can use in the classroom. Many schools now offer robotics as an extracurricular activity. LSI hopes this activity helps youth at Beloit feel a sense of belonging with their peers when they are introduced to STEM subjects in the future. “Our kids love going to this program,” said Angie, an LSI caseworker. “They like it because it is out of the ordinary, and they get to use their imagination, too. It’s something they are able to create and see the end result.” On this day, Daniel, age 14, has just learned how to make his “robot” move. “I built that,” he says with a huge grin. And thanks to LSI donors and volunteers, he’s building a bright future, too.
