“We are Human “beings” not human “doings.”

Luke 5:16

But Jesus would withdraw to deserted places and pray.

Vacation is a good thing, isn’t it? I mean, we all need it, don’t we? Time away from the busy-ness, the job, the school… time away to “re-create” or recreate. In today’s day and age it seems like so many of us feel a need to “keep busy” and to justify our time and energies so that we appear to be productive and doing something. Which is all well, fine and good. We should do something with our lives (we need to eat and have a roof over our heads and to provide) but we should also take time to rest, fill up, nap and remember we are human “beings” not humans “doings.” I found this picture quite awhile ago and I think it’s appropriate.

We should find our purpose, our calling, our means of making a living in life and we should live our lives so that we can share our gifts, talents and passions with others and the world in some way. But we should also follow the example of Jesus (not the other guy!) and we should take time to rest, pray, think, reflect and “re-create” ourselves so that we can continue to live life.

I say all of this as I’m on vacation myself, so it’s foremost in my mind. We have kept busy with fun things as a family (mainly swimming!) and we have also taken time to just “be”. To not have a schedule to keep, to talk with each other and to reconnect. It was good to be away and to remember that we are enough… that God is with us (even when we have little disputes with each other!).

It has been good to be on “vacation”. We have enjoyed our time. I’m grateful I have a job and a calling that allows me to take this time. And it is good we are filled up once again with new energy to come back to school, work and everyday normal life.

I hope you can reflect and think on these kinds of things for yourself as well as when the fall “busy-ness” comes around again… as summer ends and as real life calls again. Jesus gave and gave and gave to those around him, and even he took time to reconnect, to refuel to “re-create” himself so he could continue to care and love and live life.

Jesus calls us to do the same.

Causely September For the month of September, we are partnering with Haiti Partners to empower through education. Every 10 check-ins will help provide a day of school to a child in Haiti.

Haiti Partners’ mission is to help Haitians change Haiti through education. They currently run one flagship school and partner with six more. Over 25 years of in-country experience has shown that the most fertile terrain for sustainable change in Haiti is through a high quality, community-based education that teaches students and parents active learning strategies and prepares them to be agents of change in their community and country.

If you want to learn more about Haiti Partners, you can check them out at haitipartners.org. The hashtag this month is #school4kids.

If you haven’t heard of Reach by Causely, here's how it works... Causely makes a donation to a great cause every time people check-in (Facebook or Instagram tag) at our location (Peace Lutheran Church). To learn more about Causely visit causely.com/our-good.

Get to Know Your Endowment Fund What is a congregational Endowment Fund? We generally associate the term “endowment” with “future” and “perpetual”. This is unlike other funds of the congregation which are established to meet current needs. An Endowment fund anticipates annual distribution of some portion of its assets, while retaining and growing the remainder to meet future mission and ministry opportunities in “perpetuity”. (This concept is compa-rable to your favorite fruit tree where the fruit is harvested and utilized each year while the tree continues to grow, each year bearing more fruit).

What is the purpose for the congregational Endowment Fund? The Endowment Fund will provide an opportunity and means for the congregation to expand its mission and ministry outreach beyond normal budgeted items. Therefore, an Endowment Fund receives, holds, and distributes assets with a long-term view centered on the mission and ministry of Peace Lutheran Church

Why did Peace Lutheran establish an Endowment Fund? It is important for a congregation to have a plan of how to use estate gifts. Peace Lutheran Church ratified their Endowment Fund in 2008. Although Endowment Funds may receive outright gifts, such funds typically grow by receiving benevolent gifts from estate giving. An Endowment Fund gives the members of the congregation an idea of how their gifts will be used. These members are appreciative of the existence of a plan which is structured and managed in accordance with Bylaws that set forth how their gift will be used. The Endowment Fund provides an orderly, established, convenient and transparent vehicle to responsibly receive, administer, and grow their gifts and bequests.

Who will administer the Endowment Fund? The Bylaws create an Endowment Committee of seven elected members who are voting members of Peace Lutheran Church and have the necessary experience or expertise. This Committee is responsible for promoting gifts and bequests, holding and investing funds, and reviewing and disbursing grants which meet the criteria of congregational benevolence set forth in the Bylaws. The Church Council maintains authority over the Endowment Committee.

A congregational Endowment Fund is about our part in ministry even after our death. It’s our Legacy! Through an Endowment Fund, earnings from your gift keep on giving to the ministries of the church long after we are gone. These funds make a ministry possible where otherwise it might not happen, now or in the future.

Sunday School Update

SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS SEPTEMBER 16, 2018!

To ensure that we know health, allergies and/or behavior concerns of your child(ren), a registration form is required for each child attending Sunday School. NEW THIS YEAR: Last year’s registration forms can be reviewed, dated and signed by a parent. We hope this will simplify the registration process. We will have them in your child’s classroom within the first few weeks of the Sunday School year. If you are new to Peace Lutherans’ Sunday School program or if you wish to fill out a new form, they can be found in the church narthex, the counter by Pastor Stuart’s office or fill out online at: http://www.peacelc.org/forms.html. Completed forms can be dropped off in the church office or handed into your child’s teacher. We appreciate your efforts as these forms are used by your child(ren) teacher(s) and church office in case of an emergency.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR TEACHERS, HELPERS AND SUBSTITUTES. If you

are interested in helping in one of these positions, just curious for more information or to talk to other teachers, contact Pastor Stuart or Laura Ruotsala ([email protected]). Thank you for considering helping us with Sunday School. Positions are open to ALL responsible persons. The more volunteers we have, the lighter the load for all!

See you on September 16!

Family Devotion

Ask everyone “what is your favorite thing to do in the summer?” I’m sure you’ll get some of the big ones, but if there are some simple things, try and get them in before school starts!...or even on the nicer weekends after it has!

Family Movie

For your older kids: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is really amazing! It begins with Iron Man in 2008 and the most recent is Ant-man and Wasp. They are so good and have so many great themes…and it’s about superheroes!

A Book to Read with Your Children

We’re at the point now where Lukas is being able to read a ton of things, so it’s getting pretty fun! If you’re in that part of life, let them pick their favorite books and let them read a story to you! It really is a beautiful thing.

Youth & Family Ministry I have a book called Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, by Cynthia Copeland Lewis. It is really so good. Funny, sad, true, insightful and all from a kid’s point of view. Here are some of my favorites:

It’s possible to feel full when it comes to vegetables, but not full when it comes to a piece of cake. If you’re going to bother wetting the soap and messing up the towel, you might as well go ahead and wash your hands. Ask why until you understand. Even if you’ve been fishing for three hours and haven’t gotten anything except poison ivy and a sunburn, you’re still better off than the worm. If you want pancakes for breakfast, offer to help make them. Some weeks you really need Saturday on a Wednesday. Shortcuts aren’t always. Wander. Wonder. You think your book bag is heaviest until you pick up someone else’s by mistake. Don’t tease a big kid. Getting up early gives you more time to play. When you’re the one setting the table, you can give the funny fork to your sister. Whiners usually play alone. Who cares what happened last week? You always spill juice when you’re wearing your Sunday school clothes.

Pretty good stuff, isn’t it? Can you tell why I like to read them? And you all have families and kids who also have some great and funny and insightful and sad things to say too. Ask them!

~Pastor Stuart

From the Desk of Nurse Marsha Have you ever heard of “ROADS”? The kind of “ROADS” I’m referring to is “Reaching Out About Suicide and Depression” which is a community education effort to reduce suicide rates in Shawano and Menominee Counties and surrounding areas. You will be seeing signs and information in the bathrooms here at Peace Lutheran as well as on our bulletin boards. We will have 2 presenters here on Sunday, September 23rd from 9:30 a.m.-10:30a.m. to speak to our Confirmation students and their parents about ROADS and how we may be able to help become more aware of possible warning signs, risk factors, and what to do if we are worried about a friend, family member, or yourself. We are also hoping to have 2 presenters come here again in November for anyone 6th grade and older. Please watch your bulletins, weekly e-letters, and Peace Lutheran website for date and time.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. I won’t be sharing statistics and information that talks AROUND the issues related to suicide. Getting to the heart of suicide is difficult because none of us really knows exactly what’s going on in another person’s head…we CAN listen and be aware of risk factors, look for warning signs in our loved ones as well as ourselves and call for HELP!

RISK FACTORS:

Are you worried about a family member or friend?

***STAY with the person! LISTEN and take them seriously. Talk opening and honestly about suicide. Ask him/her “Are you having thoughts of suicide?” or “Do you have a plan for how you would end your life?” Ask what you can do to help and don’t argue, debate or raise your voice when talking with him/her. This may be uncomfortable, but you may be part of their LIFELINE.

*GET or CALL 911 or the NATIONAL CRISIS LINE 1-800-273-8255 for HELP!

Are you worried about yourself?

*PRAY-ask GOD for help! Then find someone you can talk to like a close friend, family member, pastor, doctor, coach, teacher, parish nurse, or call the NATIONALCRISIS LINE 1-800-273-8255. Seek help IMMEDIATELY if you have thoughts of suicide for any reason!

*AVOID alcohol +/or drugs

*Do not tolerate physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from anyone. Tell someone you trust and get the help you need.

Last but not least…one of the best things you can do if you know or suspect your loved one is thinking about suicide is to educate yourself. Learning about suicide, what the risk factors are, what the warning signs may look like, and how it may be prevented can help you understand what to do as part of their support system. Please consider coming to the ROADS presentation being offered this Fall at Peace Lutheran. Feel free to call me or email me if you have any questions, concerns and/or want to talk. I am here for you!

God’s peace and love,

Nurse Marsha

Contact Nurse Marsha You can reach Nurse Marsha’s office by calling 920-865-7595, extension 2. She will return your call during office hours. You may also send her questions via email to: [email protected] .

*Depression/loss of self-esteem

*Major loss, such as a loved one, relationship, home, di-vorce, jobs, retirement

*Stressful family life, such as family members who are de-pressed, abusive, unstable or substance abuse

*Previous suicide attempts or having a family member or friend die from suicide

*Failures, such as school, career, or relationships

*Fear of authority, peers, group, gang members, or bullying

WARNING SIGNS:

*Suicide threats or making statements about feeling hopeless, helpless +/or worthless

*Talking, reading/researching, drawing/artwork, writing (for

example: FACEBOOK, TWITTER, SNAPCHAT) about sui-cide or death

*Dramatic changes in personality +/or dramatic change in mood from depression to euphoria

*Unusual neglect of appearance

*Visiting or calling people to say goodbye

*Giving away belongings or prized possessions

*Withdrawal from people, especially close friends, or family or a favorite activity

*Increasing use of drugs +/or alcohol

*Trouble with eating or sleeping.

*Engaging in self-injurious behaviors such as cutting +/or risk taking behaviors

Katie’s Circle will meet on Tuesday, September 11th, at 1 pm in the small fellowship hall. Please join us for our salad luncheon. We will share a delicious lunch and begin our new study. The study can be found on pages 20 – 25 in the September Gather magazine. This begins our fall study on repentance. Session one: Turning to God, time after time; with the theme verse of Joel 2:13b. We will discuss what it means to repent and why repentance is important in the life of Christian faith.

No need to bring anything but yourself. The current members of Katie’s circle will provide the salads and beverages. The hosts are Pat Kind and Sandy Hansen along with the other members of Katie’s Circle.

The Bible study is found in the Gather magazine. To order a subscription call 844-409-0576 (toll free); or write to Gather Subscription Order Center, PO Box 336, Congers, NY 10920-0336. The cost for 1 year/10 issues is $19.95.

Please plan to join us. It is a wonderful time to share with other Christian women and to grow our faith together. The discussions are wonderful and you do not need to be a Bible scholar to join in – or to just listen, if you prefer. Hope to see you in September.

Book Review

CATCHING THE WIND CATCHING THE WIND by Melanie Dobson is a story about Daniel Knight and his friend Brigitte. Daniel (13 years old) and Brigitte (10 years old) escape from the Gestapo agents who arrested both their parents. They manage to escape to England only to be separated there. Daniel vowed to find Brigitte after the war, and now 70 years later he is still looking. He hires Quenby Vaughn, an American journalist working in London. Quenby is good at finding missing people and she also has a personal investment in a related WWII espionage story.

This is a wonderful story that has fascinating historical detail. CATCHING THE WIND can be found in the adult fiction section of the library. Check it out and enjoy!
