Why crop-livestock integration?

• The synergies between different farming enterprises ensure food and nutritional security, increase income, reduce risk and increase resilience.

• Integrated systems improve the input/output ratios of water, land, labor and other inputs.

• Integration of crops and livestock, specifically goats and groundnuts & mucuna have immense positive impact on women and children!

What have we learnt?• Farmers respond to market signals and invest

in agricultural production.• Feed production is crucial in reducing

mortalities and producing high quality animal products

• Farmers understand the role of legumes in improving overall system functioning

• Huge opportunities for legumes!!!• Integrated systems reduce climatic shock• Innovation Platform process is effective in

facilitating change within these systems

Page 21: Crop-livestock integration and intensification

The future: ZimCLIFS, ENSURE & EXTRA

• Refine the CLL system within different areas through participatory modeling and capacity building

• Continue building on the successes achieved with mucuna, need to investigate other legumes and dual purpose crop varieties

• Crucial to release CG7 (in Zimbabwe) – seed supply!!!• Introduce small scale mechanization for groundnuts; lifters,

strippers, shellers• Strengthen value chains for groundnuts and small ruminants• Higher level stakeholders & policy engagement for building

longer term adaptive capacity and impact• Continue to refine the Innovation Platform process and build

local capacity to increase its use and impact.• Continuously evaluate the progress and adjust course where

needed.
