56” wide 97% polyester, 3% spandex fairly lightweight Italian jersey which has been printed in a sort of mottled silver, grey and black so it doesn’t really have a pattern it’s just a melange of the said colours in addition to which it has this sort of metallic sheen. An interesting cloth to say the least.

✿✿ A Life LeSS OrdinAry60” wide light weight polyester suiting in beige, with a little bit of a surface sheen that keeps it away from being absolutely boring, however it has a nice colour and a nice hand being poly it doesn’t crease easily.

✿✿ AnimAL KingdOm ii (picture on the back)These are two very nice animal prints, they have come at a price, hence the price. The Heffalump is on better quality cloth. a) Heffalump - A charming aqua cotton with different coloured elephants all over it. This really is something special, not to mention really cute. This is 56”/144cm wide b) Dinopaws - A lovely dinosaur novelty print on a grey ground. This is 53”/136cm wide

✿✿ AS gOOd ASIf you like viscose dress fabrics and you like a bit of a pattern, then this is the fabric for you. I am biased but I would love a pair of trousers made out of this. It is a super lightweight high twist viscose that doesn’t crease. It has a subtle but interesting blue kaleidoscope print. The label tells me it was made in France.


✿✿ A tAngLed WebIn this case it’s a knitted web, not a woven web. It’s a fashion fabric; that alarms me somewhat, as every fabric made is a fashion fabric. This is fashionable as long as you want it to be, it is a cream acrylic, polyester and wool mix, knitted jersey fabric which has a bit of a bouclé loop on the surface and then this has been lightly brushed. It is very, very soft. And fairly flimsy. But it is rather clever and in addition to all this, it has got an all over rose-like pattern print in pink with a little bit of purple and some dark green sage green in the foliage. There is quite a bit of pattern, and it is rather pretty.

✿✿ Aye, Aye60” wide polyester georgette, in black and cream with an all-over design that looks something a bit like the eyes in a peacock’s tail. The face in an Edward Munch painting, but without the drama. Ultra lightweight and beautifully made.

In early August I was asked to come along and see

the latest developments at Croft Mill, so when Caroline said

“I’ve got a new office” I was more than a little bit surprised. I didn’t

know she had an old one! Funnily, what has happened since, is

that this office, which was quite large and she would have rattled

around in, is now quite compact because it is half full of cloth! It is

from this heartfelt space that I commence my Sermon.

Since we last spoke quite a lot has happened. There has been a

lovely summer, much ado about the football World Cup, cricket’s ups

and downs and the Commonwealth Games. The latter appeared to

go awfully well for all of the home nations, and you would hope this

would bode well for Great Britain at the next Olympics.

Speaking of Sport, I heard a little missive the other day...I’m sorry

I haven’t a clue which programme it was on, when the host asked

the panel for the difference between phlegm and catarrh; the

answer “one is mucus fluid and the other.. a cheating nation that

bribed FIFA.”

There is lots to talk about so I better get on with it or my pocket

money may be stopped!

A 60” (150cm) wide pale blue, cotton rich poly/cotton chambray shirting. Another cloth, which has a bit of a history, probably made locally quite a few years ago, when they were experimenting how to get rid of cotton when it became too expensive. Because as you probably are well aware, chambrays should be all cotton. Nonetheless it’s a very nice cloth, with a nice soft hand.

✿✿ bLAcK SuitingS & dreSS fAbricSAs Tears Go By it is the Evening of the Day, I Sit and Watch… For those of us who can remember the era, from which that song came, you may have had a garment made out of this rather fabulous black polyester dress fabric. It is somewhat shiny and definitely made for the posh side of things. A rather beautiful cloth. On the label it says ‘Canadian peach skin’ - it is not a peach skin in my mind but it is nice and soft.

Look at Me When I’m Talking to You - Black, heavy polyester and elastane dress fabric. This is perfect for trousers and it would also make skirts, school skirts and trousers. A strong fabric with good stretch.

Out of time - Black - It would also be prudent at this time to tell you of this 60 inch wide black wool worsted suiting, 2% lycra whose wondrous nature I am almost a loss to describe. If you want send for a sample you probably will anyway because of the price but e-by-gum is gradley.


The Big Swirl - 58” wide darkest black polyester/Lycra lightweight skirt cloth or trousers for that matter but not jackets, beautifully soft and wonderfully swirly fabric. Quite densely woven polyester crepe suiting.

✿✿ bLueberry hiLL54” wide densely printed viscose in navy blue with an all over, small floral pattern in orange, turquoise, cerise, pale blue and white. Lovely colouring, although there is a slight sporadic blur on the print along one of the edges - this will reduce the width by about 10cm and we have reduced the price to reflect this.

✿✿ bOLd Stripe Now you can either wear this or sit on it. It looks somewhat like a deck chair fabric, in fact made for medium shorts for a famous and expensive outlet. I know this because we had its sister fabric a, year or two back, exactly the same, so I know where it is from. A medium weight, woven cotton twill in a multi-coloured stripe in oranges/fawn/lemon/bit of pink and white. Despite its fairly light weight it is an extremely strong fabric, soft finish so is not pristine or smooth as an ironed poly-cotton very pliable, not stiff in any way. A bit of a blast.


✿✿ bOO!If you want something to brighten your day, this might just be it, a colourful and pretty jersey fabric. It is a fine jersey, so although not fully opaque, it will drape very nicely; especially in a top. We have it in two colours. a) Blue b) Red

Birds Eye - 60” wide pure worsted wool suiting/jacketing with tiny “bird’s eye” weave. Woven in Yorkshire this stunning wool is even suitable for a light weight coating (used with a good lining) Timeless!

Brace Yourself (Picture on the Cover) - 60” wide woollen mouflon coating in dark wine/burgundy. And for those unfamiliar, a mouflon is a coating which has a very light brushed appearance, giving the cloth a little bit more volume, obviously without adding to the weight. A glorious cloth in every respect.

Donegal - A 60” wide woollen Donegal tweed in a mixture of red, beige, black, maroon and other odd sundry colours mixed in too form the tweed. Suiting weight, rather than a coat weight. Another beautiful cloth; woven, hand finished entirely in Yorkshire.


Harry - 60” wide black/grey fine herringbone weave, woollen suiting. Another all Yorkshire cloth, which I have seen made up into men’s jackets of the variety that start off at around £500 and finish up in somebody’s sale at £150. Another beautiful cloth.


Lamb - Grey pure new wool jacketing / lightweight coating. It is not a plain flat grey, there is a suggestion of other tones in it. It has the appearance of a sort of flattened lambs wool weave if you will, with an ever so slightly polished finish. Exquisite.

✿✿ burn OutThis describes a processes of textiles, a process whereby some parts of a cloth are removed chemically to a pattern, leaving it thickened in places, basically. What has happened in this particular case, is that the thin places are almost a fine net, and the thicker places look like ribbons that have been swirled and twirled and left to lie a bit where they landed so to speak. So to get the chemical process to do that, it is fairly clever. Not to other people, because they do it every day but to you and I it’s a clever process. This cloth is 54” wide maybe a tad wider and is in a very delicate shade of duck egg blue. Very drapey, floppy almost and certainly made as a garment to go on top of, as well as, if you understand what I am saying? Nice cloth.

Changing SPoTS ConCourS d’eleganCe ConCerTina


✿✿ chAnging SpOtS58/60” wide polyester, lightweight crepe with an all-over animal print, which could be a leopard, could be a cheetah, or just a figment of someone’s imagination… but I hope that conveys the animal bit of it too you. It’s a bit of a see-through cloth, despite the amount of pattern there is on the cloth. The colouring is: black, beige cream and a hint of what looks like dark green. Now you won’t see that on a cheetah, anywhere.

✿✿ cOcKAdOOdLe dOOI’m not so sure what this cloth reminded me of to give it that title, but perhaps it has something to do with the swirling featherlike pattern in white on a black. The fabric has been dyed and the pattern has been printed using a pattern called discharge printing; which means that the black gets bleached out to create the white. Which, to be fair is actually slightly off white. The black will not run at 40 degrees. It is a very drapey, knitted viscose cloth. Not exactly for the faint-hearted but it is rather delicious. 60” wide at least. So you get a lot of feathers for your money, and it is a fairly substantial cloth to boot. John Kaldor is printed on the selvedge.

60”/150cm wide 30% wool, 70% polyester knitted jersey in a weight suitable for items like bison jackets, the basic cloth is a mottled grey, but that has had a print added to the surface in an abstract geometric pattern in lots of lovely colours including: mauve, cerise, hints of purple. Blue, orange and combinations in these colours where they criss-cross in the pattern. Another Italian masterpiece.


✿✿ deAd pOetS SOcietyThis is a 150cm or 58/60” wide 97% cotton, 3% elastane lightweight trousering/jacket cloth. It’s printed in a quite zany abstract pattern, in black, pale green, blue, mustard, red, cerise, with all manner of shapes and articles within the print, but none that you could exactly put your finger on. A fantastic cloth.

b) Washed Denim - Wonderfully soft 60inch wide washed denim in a super traditional mid blue. This one is £10.95

c) Navy Denim - 60inch Wide soft dark navy (almost black.) It is medium to lightweight, but just light enough for a shirt. This one is £8.00 per metre

d) Heavy weight with lycra - 63inch/158cm. Very dark navy denim/20% lycra. Unlike the other navy denim above, this has a texture in the weave; it is subtle and very nice. This one is £8.00 per metre

e) Sebastian - Smart, classy, strong (maybe a little posh?!) who knows, but these are the words that came to mind as I looked at this denim fabric. Maybe they are not what you think of when you here the name Sebastian but… Here we have a rather stunning cotton/poly/elastane lightweight black denim. 60”/152cm wide and £8.95 per metre

The cloth shares, well obviously shares the attributes of linen in the little slubbiness in the appearance. ✿✿ diSguiSe60” wide polyester crepe in cream, grey and little bit of a mustardy beige colour. The cloth is 60” wide, the zebra pattern stripes don’t bedazzle, they are quite easy on the eye and the cloth certainly, from a medium sort of distance, is extremely classy. As you get up to it you are drawn to the detail, in the print and all in all I think it is an outstanding cloth. Only 1 roll.

This cloth is Italian but there were cloths in the good old days, fabrics as fine as this were woven on Lancashire looms, but there was probably one weaver to two or three looms.

Cotton Gabardine These are all 60inch wide and £6.75

a) Green Tea - Lightweight cotton gabardine in a not too creamy cream, pretty much of the bowling/ croquet kind of colour.

b) One of those days - Cotton gabardine trousering in pale grey. Beautiful cloth but you might need to embellish it to brighten it up.

c) Boris - 60” wide fine cotton lightweight gabardine in a rich camel colour. Sufficiently finely woven to give the cloth a sheen, it is not artificial, it is the quality of the yarn and the tightness of the weave that has caused this. It won’t be that often that he has a smart cloth named after him.

a) Cherry Ripe - 60” wide (at least) cotton rich cotton/poly gabardine trousering pleasant shade of cherry red, not shouting, not whispering; just talking. This is the last roll. There is a fault every 2 metres so it is reduced to £5.00 per metre.

b) Lime Grove - 62” poly/cotton trousering. A bright, but not too bright, mint. Very refreshing.

c) Lotta Bottle - 59” wide cotton rich cotton/poly chino in dark bottle green and with very fine twill weave.

a) Death in paradise - This is a 63 inch wide softly brushed lightweight cotton canvas soft but strong in the way of the best toilet tissue, it comes in a rather pleasant shade of light camel. It will make anything from wonderful floppy hats to bush trousers.

b) Tonto - 64” wide very fine cotton canvas trousering in Wyoming sunset yellow that’s a soft dark yellow.


Sanded Trousering This has been sanded so it has a lovely soft feel, almost like a baby’s bottom.

b) Pickup - 59” wide. Very fine but substantial cotton Bedford cord with at 1 cm intervals a hiccup which gives it a bit of a stripe pattern.

I✿✿ if yOu buiLd it...

As in the dream of the Iowan farmer who built a baseball field eventually things happened. There’s a cloth here 60” wide Italian cotton shirting, made for Paul Smith. Almost like a chambray, but differing in that it also has some little flecks in the weave and some of the white yarn is slightly proud of the cloth. But still the overall effect is a sort of pale air-force..y blue. It then has this wonderful finish; which is inherent in the yarns; it’s not going to wash out, or anything like that. But it gives it the hand of an angel.

✿✿ i’m A LittLe teApOtBelieve it or not I know a person who has a shirt made out of this. He has shirts made out of all kinds of things but this I though took the biscuit. It’s a 59” wide, 100% cotton, deep cream/slightly yellowy base cloth with an all over kitchen print in navy blue depicting tea pots, pepper pots, onions, pea pods etc. with the word for these printed on the fabric. A great pinny fabric, excellent cloth.

✿✿ mAgentA150cm wide, 98% polyester, 2% spandex dress fabric in, as the title suggests, a vibrant magenta colour. A plain weave, with just a hint of crepeyness teamed with black or navy blue; this is a real corker.


✿✿ mexicAn WidOW60” wide polyester velour with a little bit of stretch, in a rather glorious dark red colour. The sort of things to make a Scottish widow’s cloak from. But in this case it might be a Mexican widow’s.

54” wide gobsmackingly gorgeous wool, mohair, knitted jacketing in orange, made in France for Chanel. Now that is what I call orange. Wonderfully bright and rich. The surface isn’t unlike a heavy bouclé, I’m not sure how to describe the actual knit, but it’s in sort of wavy lines It’s furry and although quite thick, it is extremely light; which I suppose is what wool and mohair are all about. Break a leg to get this one.

Just as I was settling down to my pie and peas, along comes a cloth which from one side, you wouldn’t think it had this on the other. Well it’s a 60” wide woven, wool tweed in quite a mixture of yarns, as you would expect a tweed to be, but predominately the overall effect is light brown. But then printed on it, is a floral design in brown, black, purple, dark orange and I can’t really see why they’ve done it apart from the fact that you might wear it in some partly reversible article. It has a bit of a rugged feel, there is not a great deal of it, but it must have been popular at some point in its native Italy.

✿✿ Open Wide64/66” wide knitted silky viscose jersey in a very pale cream, might be a little too sensual for some. There is a shine in one of the yarns in this which means that it does not have a matt finish. It is not shiny though; very nice.

A 60” wide suiting fabric from Paul Smith. It is in a dark grey and would be ideal in unstructured garments, that isn’t to say not tailored, but certainly unstructured – maybe not even lined. It is made from cotton viscose and is fairly special, there is lots of interest in the yarns that have been used. Little slubs, speckles; none of which detract from the overall colour but soften it somewhat. So there you have it.

This is a cloth made for sheeting but it has a lovely satin finish there are hundreds of threads to the square inch, it is only the width that prevents it from being a magnificent all-rounder but a beautiful cloth any way.


✿✿ picK Of the bunch60” wide viscose/nylon/elastane suiting in a beautiful shade of aubergine; which I think quite a lot of red wines, these days, share. A nice soft finish. Quite a delightful cloth.


✿✿ pigeOn fOrce60 inch wide cotton check lightweight flannel shirting from Paul Smith with just a hint of bluegrass about it. It has a slub in the weft which shows up in the paler part of the cloth and the cloth itself is made up of pale grey, dark grey and purple yarns forming a gingham-like check. It has a wonderful hand and can be best described as a wonderful cloth.

✿✿ pin heAdNot to be confused with any form of insult, this is a 60” wide cotton chino weight cloth, with the finest of tiny pinhead checks. Really only caused by locking up the yarns going one way then t’other, and where they cross it makes a check that is very, very fine. But there is a lot of yarn which makes the cloth a touch on the heavy side of light. If you are confused it is a very good trouser/jacket weight fabric and is in a clerical grey.

✿✿ SAfeLy gAthered 54” wide polyester elastane blouse/skirt fabric in deepest darkest black with the addition that 4”/10cm possibly intervals, a band of gathering which is where the elastane comes in. So it draws the cloth in, widths ways, not length ways, to give a ruched effect. Can’t say further than that.


✿✿ ShrinKing feeLingAs I approach my umpteenth birthday, and as hard I try to stand tall, I can’t see over some of these racks of cloth; which it makes it a bit of a hard job as it means I then have to go round t’other side and perhaps do a bit of climbing. But I have just found a cloth that was worth the effort. A 60” wide, polyester crepe of a dress/suiting weight in a rather magnificent shade of a RAF Blue/Mauve...that is to say it is a bluey-mauve, or a mauvey-blue. Easy care, easy wear. And as dressed up or down as you would like.


✿✿ SienA60” wide burnt orange, very fine polyester crepe suiting. Virtually creaseless, beautifully soft and a delight to wear with the colour being a bit of an Italian sunset.

✿✿ SiLK vOiLeI think you may rather like this, rather too good to be true at this price, but I don’t think the guy who sold it to me knew what it was. Ultra – fine red silk voile.


✿✿ SLinKyThe width of this polyester cloth suggests to me, that it has been made for underwear. It’s quite stretchy, so I can’t be exact about the width but it’s around the 50” mark and comes in a pale olive a) green or b) silvery pale grey. It doesn’t have to disappear under anything, it can be worn on top in its own right, it’s a beautifully made article. a) Mid olive green b) Pale silver


✿✿ SOfiAA 54” wide, quite sensational cloth from Missoni, in Italy. Its knitted, it’s in a zig-zag knit pattern with lots of muted colour, must have been made for jackets, or stoles, or shawls or that type of thing. Another cloth that is as rare as hens teeth.


✿✿ Striped tAffetA – brOWn And turQuOiSeI am not absolutely certain that this cloth isn’t a lining, if it’s a lining it’s a stormer, if it’s for skirts, waistcoats, bodices, that type of thing, it’s extremely good. Basically it is a brown/ turquoise/ aqua stripe with finer brown/ turquoise/ aqua stripes bordering the wider three main coloured stripes. Does that make sense? Or have I been wasting my time. It is a great cloth, a nice hand. 100% polyester. a) Brown b) Turquoise


✿✿ Summer dAyVery pretty floral dress fabric in a classic summer pattern and eye catching colours.


✿✿ SupernOvA2.3m wide (90”) knitted polyester/acrylic/viscose heavy jersey. Fairly loosely knitted in, a sort of unstructured check pattern. The colours involved in the cloth are white, black, grey and an element of verlouex thread which adorns some of the squares in the check. It’s not knitted as a square check, it’s knitted as a diamond shape check, but the shapes within that are sort of square. A very interesting and awfully clever cloth, which because of the weight will make excellent loose or even baggy articles.

✿✿ SWAn LAKe (picture on back cover)60” wide polyester crinkle georgette in a deep turquoise blue with what appeared to be small swans in balletic positions all over the cloth in cream. Not for me, as I am big boy now, but ever so delicately feminine.

58/59” “150cm” wide superfine velvet cord. And when I say superfine, I really do mean it. It’s a finer cord as you have ever seen, and comes in an absolutely delicious colour; which is described on the label as ‘chestnut’ which to me is a very dark, rusty, reddy brown. Almost bordering on burgundy. 97% cord, 3% elastane. Fill your boots.

✿✿ the cOLOur purpLeWell, that’s what it says on the ticket; it also says on the ticket that it’s 60” wide which I disbelieved. But subsequently find to be correct. 100% Viscose. Beautifully made, nice soft hand, easy care...What more do you want of a cloth.


✿✿ the finAL frOntier (picture on front cover)60” at least, fine viscose jersey in a shade of bluey-purple which astronauts see as they are entering space. There is a fine, lighter fleck yarn running through the cloth, which could give the impression of the light shining through some other galaxy. Soft, silky and slinky I’ll bet this is a delight to wear.

✿✿ there cOmeS A timeHaving been around as long as I have, and been in this game as long as I have, not much can surprise, but every so often something crops up that almost takes your breath away. This is one such cloth, it is 54” wide. It’s in black and a brown mix, if it was a fur fabric it would be extraordinarily ordinary. But it isn’t. This is a knitted bouclé jacketing, lightweight, warm; it has wool and mohair and I think, a bit of nylon in it to keep it hardwearing. But it is exceptionally soft, wonderful to handle and absolutely astonishing to look at. If there is enough of it, buy it all.

✿✿ When in dOubtThis is a 52” wide approximately cotton 36%, viscose 34%, linen 10% cheesecloth, in a riot of a paisley/floral pattern. And whilst it looks random, it is not. It has a proper repeat and at 12” intervals across the cloth, it has quite a large chrysanthemum. It has pretty much every colour you can think of, but they are muted rather than bold. And it’s a great loose garment cloth.


✿✿ WhO’S A nice bOy then?58/59” wide dark navy blue poly/viscose suiting with an absolutely gorgeous finish. More of a summer weight than anything else. Beautifully made.

Y✿✿ yucAtAn

This 54” wide acrylic and wool loose knitted jersey in beige, with a very dark brown, very soft and silky lace tacked on to it, that reminds me of something Mexican. I have no idea why, the lace certainly looks like something that a Mexican women of means would wear on the stoop on her adobe hacienda. The lace is considerably wider than the base cloth, so that when you do make something out of this, you’ll have something other of which to contemplate, at least. Gorgeous in the extreme.


Z✿✿ ZeeZee tOp

I doubt that you will see many fabrics like this away from very high class, very trendy menswear shops. It is a 58” wide (147cm) Italian cotton suiting. It is in a very dark navy, with thousands of tiny, little ‘z’ marks in very narrow rows across the cloth. It could have actually been up and down the cloth, but they are not; they are from East to West. A very good suiting weight, and suited to structured as well as unstructured jackets, I believe it was part of a suit, so you can make trousers as well.
