Dear Friends,

At a moment when people across the country and the world are working to overcome deep divisions, I am so proud to be joining with people of all ages and from all walks of life to grow a national development community filled with possibility and hope. The All Stars began working in poor neighborhoods 36 years ago, and we never left — we continue to stand on street corners, knock on doors in housing projects and walk the halls of struggling schools to offer thousands of young people and families an opportunity to be part of creating something new in their lives.

Across America, All Stars' mission and vision are being championed and shaped by forward-looking and committed partners who are passionate about opening up pathways of opportunity for inner-city youth. Privately funded from the start, last year the All Stars Project raised over $9.7 million from more than 3,500 donors who are dedicated to partnering with youth and finding new ways to strengthen our American community.

With this support, we have launched a campaign to establish our third Center for Afterschool Development — this one in Chicago’s downtown Loop. The Development School for Youth enjoyed a tremendous year of growth, including an expansion of the program into Jersey City, NJ. In addition, Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids, our groundbreaking model for police-community relations, has been endorsed by some of the country’s leading civic and law enforcement officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and the Newark Police Department, the Dallas Police Department and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and its newest commissioner, James P. O’Neill.

Thanks to your generosity, we are able to bring development and hope to many more young people and poor communities across the country — and invest in a new way forward for our nation and world.

Thank you for your friendship and support.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle L. Kurlander President and CEO

As our flagship program, the All Stars Talent Show Network (ASTSN) continues to be our most important and effective community gateway to development through performance. The ASTSN involves young people, ages 5 to 25, in performing in and producing hip-hop talent shows in their neighborhoods. Everyone who auditions makes the show. Youth take the lead in creating a new and positive culture in their communities. They are cheered on by audiences of family members, neighbors, volunteers and donors who join “Back to School” trips to the talent shows. This experience is transformative for all.

DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL FOR YOUTH

In the Development School for Youth (DSY), young people ages 16 to 21 learn to perform as professionals by partnering with business leaders across the country who conduct development workshops and provide paid summer internships at their companies.

In 2016, 1,412 executives from 189 corporations across America participated in the All Stars Project approach to involvement philanthropy through the DSY, volunteering thousands of hours of personal time to share their lives and expertise with some of our nation’s most marginalized and forgotten youth.

In response to the often tense relationship between police officers and inner-city teenagers, the ASP created Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids (OCCK), an award-winning police-community relations program. Founded in 2006, and led by ASP co-founder, Lenora Fulani, Ph.D., the program is run in partnership with both the New York City Police Department and the Newark Police Department. Monthly workshops use performance, improvisation and conversation to help young people and police officers develop positive relationships. These take place at Police Athletic League (PAL) centers and other community locations.

At the heart of the All Stars approach is our grassroots outreach in poor communities.Across the country, dedicated staff and volunteers from all walks of life go into some of the most impoverished neighborhoods. They stand on street corners and walk through housing projects to talk one-on-one with young people and adults, and introduce them to All Stars' afterschool development programs. Community organizing and outreach is the central and fundamental activity of our work at All Stars Project and an important tool to spark meaningful dialogue about how we can positively create change in poor communities.

The All Stars Project of New York is a nationally recognized development laboratory for innovations designed to expand and strengthen the field of Afterschool Development. This year, All Stars national headquarters on West 42nd Street welcomed 15,605 people from neighborhoods throughout the city’s five boroughs who participated in our development programs. Our largest program, the ASTSN, brought positive change across the city, involving thousands of youth and adults who performed in and helped produce talent show events in the Brownsville, Fordham Heights and Harlem communities. Through the DSY, 117 students completed summer internships in partnership with over 1,000 business leaders at dozens of companies, including AIG, EY, Ironshore, JPMorgan Chase, MetLife, Latham & Watkins and Viacom. Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids continues to highlight the importance of new approaches to improving the relationship between police officers and inner-city communities, bringing together thousands of youth, NYPD police officers and members of the community in performance workshops and public demonstrations.

In addition to our core programs, All Stars Project of NY continues to be a hub for program development and innovation. Through UX, our free, university-style school of continuing education, we involved over a thousand people of all ages in classes, workshops and field trips extending

opportunities for growth to adults living in New York’s most disadvantaged communities. The Castillo Theatre and Youth Onstage!, together open up the world of cutting-edge political theatre to young people and adults, and provide free training in the performing arts to hundreds of youth under the direction of volunteer theatre professionals.

This year marked the launch of our newest initiative, the Fulani Fellowship, which gives post-graduate students the opportunity to study and practice the All Stars unique approach to human development and community activism.

The All Stars Project of New Jersey continues to play a key role in Newark’s renaissance. With the Scott Flamm Center for Afterschool Development well established as an influential center for performance and development, the ASP of NJ increased programming and outreach, in addition to expanding our civic, community, cultural and corporate partnerships this year. In 2016, the Flamm Center welcomed 5,061 visitors, while ASP of NJ programs reached 8,386 young people and adults, including 375 business professionals from 43 corporations and businesses.

Through our deepening partnership with Mayor Ras Baraka and the City of Newark, ASP of NJ was proud to launch Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids in Newark this year. All Stars was also invited by the city’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) to train the young people and support the development of their workplace performances.

The inaugural DSY class in Jersey City graduated 17 young people and was made possible by an expansion committee led by Kevin Cummings, President & CEO of Investors Bank and ASP of NJ Board Co-Chair. The committee also included: Gerard McGraw, CFO, FMR, LLC; Gus Milano, President & COO, Hartz Mountain Industries; Joseph Panepinto, Sr., President & CEO, Panepinto Properties, Inc.; John Thurlow, COO, RBC Capital Markets, and, Peter Unanue, Executive Vice President, Goya Foods.

The All Stars Project of Chicago is doubling down on its efforts to make sure our country’s third largest city is a place of opportunity and growth for its poorest youth. With the help of volunteers who contributed over 2,000 hours, we successfully completed a three-year growth campaign that increased the number of community conversations from 3,000 to 6,000 and the number of DSY graduates from 20 to 47. The DSY in Chicago was also featured in Forbes as a best practice in employee volunteerism and engagement.

In 2016 the ASP of Chicago launched a 5-year, $14 million comprehensive campaign to establish a Center for Afterschool Development in downtown Chicago. The Center will give young people from the South and West Sides of Chicago a premier downtown destination in the Loop to connect with the civic, cultural and professional life of their city. Modeled after the ASP centers on 42nd Street in NYC and in the downtown arts district in Newark — the Center signals a shift away from the isolation of poor communities, and toward involving them in reshaping the city’s culture. The campaign has already received over $5 million in gifts and pledges, including $3.5 million in leadership gifts from three caring Chicago families.

The All Stars Project of Dallas, our newest start-up is forging vibrant partnerships with civic, law enforcement, community, religious and education leaders to make sure that “Big D” also stands for development. Through our outreach efforts in 2016, we reached 8,823 young people and their families in communities throughout West and South Dallas. The ASP of Dallas also has a growing network of volunteers and partners in the education and nonprofit sectors including Southern Methodist University, the Dallas County Community College District, City Year, and dozens of other community-based organizations. This year we also launched the Police Community Relations Partnership (PCRP) with the Dallas Police Department and PAL to bring performance-based programming to communities in all seven police precincts.

Teams of young people, donors, police officers and other Dallasites surveyed residents about the needs of their community, 66% of whom said they are interested in improving police-community relations.

The All Stars Project of the San Francisco Bay Area is transforming the lives of young people and their families in Northern California – and the region’s tech sector is helping to make it happen. Hundreds of volunteers helped reach 3,200 young people through outreach in Visitacion Valley, Bayview/Hunters Point, the Mission and in East and West Oakland. The first talent show cycle of the year was held in the Tenderloin, one of the poorest areas in downtown San Francisco, and All Stars was proud to partner with local community organizations including Tenderloin Afterschool Program, Hamilton Family Services, Code Tenderloin, and Larkin Street Youth Services who have made youth and community development a priority.

10

Leaders of the Bay Area business community stepped up over the last year to create new programming partnerships with the DSY, among them the launch of a DSY Technology and Development program funded by Silicon Valley Bank. In this new “Tech Track” program, new partners including Google Ventures, Salesforce, Toutapp, Spotify and Royal Bank of Scotland came on board to host weekly interactive workshops for All Stars Bay Area young people to connect with successes and opportunities in the technology field.

All Stars took an important step toward realizing our vision of becoming America’s leader in Afterschool Development by 2020, hosting events and establishing working groups in each All Stars city. Designed to foster new connections and highlight important practices in the field, the 2016 events involved 150 afterschool leaders and frontline practitioners from more than 250 organizations nationally. We continued to work with

Southern Methodist University’s Center on Research & Evaluation on a multi-year evaluation project designed to develop a methodology and tools specific to the ASP approach that will capture how young people develop through their experiences with All Stars. The project completed its second phase this year, and it is anticipated that these measurement tools will be available nationally by 2018.

ASP deepened our partnership with Stanford University and its Center for Poverty and Inequality (CPI). At the invitation of David Grusky, Ph.D., CPI director and ASP of SF board member (pictured at right with Bonny Gildin, Ph.D., ASP VP, Research & Policy), All Stars is participating in the new Stanford Technology and Poverty Lab. In 2017, ASP will work with Lab students, faculty and tech industry partners to apply technology to extend the benefits of the face-to-face interactions between inner-city youth and affluent adults that are a hallmark of our programs.

At the All Stars Project, our approach to involvement philanthropy focuses on our supporters building direct relationships and partnerships with inner-city youth. We create community by connecting caring adults with young people, so that everyone can grow and find new ways to impact on the social challenges facing our communities and country.

We are 100% privately funded, primarily through contributions from thousands of individuals and hundreds of corporate partners. Our supporters become personally involved with our programs, hosting workshops, mock interviews, and organizing internships in the DSY; cheering on youth or volunteering at an All Stars Talent Show; or participating in the dozens of other involvement opportunities we have with our programs throughout the year.

In 2016, ASP raised over $9.7 million from over 3,500 donors who gave anywhere from $10 to $1 million. Of course the backbone of our donor base has long been

at the grassroots level, including our $1,000-plus giving community, the President’s Committee. Our annual gala at Lincoln Center raised over $2 million, and we received special leadership gifts in 2016 from John and Susi Manley, Greg and Laura Mutz (for Chicago) and Greg and Ashley Arnold (for Dallas) to expand All Stars reach and impact across the country.

The ASP Board of Directors added three new members: Joe Boren, President, Ironshore U.S. Field Operations; Gloria Strickland, VP, Youth and Community Development, ASP; and Amy Weinberg, Ph.D., Professor, Linguistics Department, University of Maryland. In addition to the national ASP Board of Directors, we have now established local boards to help lead our growth in New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas and the San Francisco/Bay Area. These leaders share an unwavering commitment to connecting youth from the poorest communities to the corporate, civic and cultural success of their cities.

There is a different kind of poverty that I think the All Stars is uniquely combating right now which is what we would call relational poverty. Relational poverty is something that is sweeping through the country and, if not addressed, is actually a greater threat to our communities and the U.S. than what we’ve seen. It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are or how impoverished you are, we’re all experiencing a sense of relational poverty, in which we do not really know how to interact with each other. I think All Stars plays a critical role across the country in bridging the gap of how we relate to one another.

The Society for Racial Harmony (SRH) is a special grouping of supporters who have made a commitment to supporting the programs of the All Stars Project through their estate planning. The SRH was created with the philosophy that getting beyond differences, including those of race and ethnicity, involves everyone developing together. Special bequests have provided millions of dollars in support for key All Stars initiatives in the last twenty years to foster the development that can create racial and social harmony.

The sample legal language below is suitable for a general bequest:

“I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the All Stars Project, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of New York, now having its principal place of business at 543 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036 [the sum of money] [_percentage of my estate], the [sum] [percentage] to be used for the All Stars’ general purposes.”

While there are many reasons I have supported the All Stars over the last 25 years, I am perhaps most impressed by the All Stars’ unwavering commitment to growth and ability to identify new methods to encourage it, as with UX and Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids. Everyone, from CEO Gabrielle Kurlander to the newest staff member, is encouraged to practice the kind of innovative thinking necessary to take on some of America’s toughest issues faced by many young people today: poverty, lack of access to quality education, and insufficient opportunities to succeed. All Stars has long been at the forefront, with co-founder Dr. Lenora Fulani and so many of our passionate volunteers. I have made long-term legacy plans to help ensure that the All Stars mission continues far into the future.
