    CORE COUNCIL MEETING

    January 21, 2011

    Those in attendance: Jerry Tarvin, Alena Boguki, Jane Snider, Linda Hanson, Linda Walker, Robin Sowder,

    Shirley thacker, Kathy Flatter, and Heather Poston.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS: Linda Hanson announced that August 1, 2011 is her target date for retirement.

    Linda Walker will be assisting Paul Ranieri, BSU faculty member, as he takes over the directors position.

    Linda mentioned looking for a support committee. She mentioned Bea, Brian Rousch, Sue Errington.

    There was discussion about Saturday Seminars. Susan Darling is leading the next one: Writing to a

    Prompt on January 22 at Robert Bell Building. She is willing to try a Thursday night (5:00pm-8:00pm).

    She will try that on February 10th

    . Linda will see about the availability of the Alumni Center for easier

    parking and classrooms.

    NWP-IN Retreat in Indianapolis- February 25 and 26: IWP is in charge of registration and receipts from

    5:00-6:30. Let Bea know if you are willing to help. Dinner starts at 6:30, browsing site displays

    (Heather will be in charge of our display). Open Mic is at 9:00. Take a piece that you have completed or

    Mary Michillini is in charge of the writing that evening. Breakfast on Saturday is from 7:30-8:30. The

    morning activities include: Idea exchange, break out sessions (Barb and Shirley will be responsible for

    Comp Camp and Preservice teacher training in Comp Camp), What is working Demos, Writing our

    legislatures, and reflection.

    REPORTS: NWP in Orlando was outstanding. Comments made were: Interaction with like minded

    writing people, collaboration, feeling honored, NWP is a notch higher and deeper than NCTE . . . it was amagical time for sure. Discussion about next years conference will be in Chicago November 17 and

    18. Mega bus possibility was discussed. REMINDER: Those that attended should get comments about

    the conference and the sessions to Alena . . . ASAP.

    Continuity- The committee sent out the surveys and the team will be looking at how to involve the TCs.

    Matt has information from Bea that Shirley and Heather have not received yet. Bea was unable to be

    here. More information will be given at the next meeting.

    Comp Camp Jerry Tarvin and Barb Miller will be running the spring Saturday BSU Comp Camp. The

    preservice class will not be coming to this camp. Barb and Alena mentioned that if that happened again,

    there was a need for a third person (liaison) to help with the log and managing the two groups of young

    students and older students. Barb and Tammy Underwood are applying for a grant for a Comp Camp at

    Cowan for grades 6-10th

    . Robin has received another grant for the high ability students at Shelbyville.

    Alexandria is also having a high ability Camp. There was discussion about helping schools with high

    ability grants and Comp Camps or other writing possibilities.

    Monograph Shirley, Barb, and Linda H are working on a monograph about Satellite Comp Camps and

    instruction of writing for preservice teachers. Barb and Linda are meeting with the editor next week in

    ST. Louis.

    Summer Programs SI application deadline is Jan 31. Interviews will be in February. Linda Valley, Jane

    Snider, and Tammy Taylor will be the facilitators. AI. . . Joy is facilitating, Beyond ISI. Jenny isfacilitating Struggling Writers. OI . . . Susan Darling and Shirley Thacker will be facilitators.

    New Business from the Inservice Leadership Team

    y Next Core Council members are asked to bring a professional book and share how they haveused that book. . . not an Amazon review. The following books were chosen by members that

    were present: Book Whisperer, Shimmering Images, Memoir, In the Middle, Reading Zone, Katie

    Wood Rays Writing Workshop.

    y Marketing - Ask the expert blog. Jane is interested in this, but she would also need a committeeto filter and field answers to the questions before posting the answers.

    Heather is working on 3 min video clips that could be posted. Linda is looking to purchase three

    flip cameras to share with the TCs to help with this project. Some ideas for videos to show:

    reading like a writer, conferencing, notebook, I-search, craft, revision.

    y Training inservice for TCs Barb is interested in this. . . perhaps a 2-3 day workshop for credit.This would also be part of continuity mentoring a TC with preservice student.

    y IWP Library would have videos of writing workshop from Elementary, Middle School, HighSchool from our TC classrooms.

    y Changing the IWP logo The committee is looking to give the logo a more professional look.Teal was the color of choice. Hopefully this can be completed soon so that we have handouts

    when Jane and Linda Walker meet with principals to discuss the opportunities of IWP for their

    schools.

    Alena is responsible for the meal at the next CORE COUNCIL meeting in April.
