On November 15, 2012, The American marketing as-
sociation (AMA) at the University of Texas Pan-American
(UTPA) held their second annual fashion show, "I AMA
Fashionista" at RED in McAllen, Texas, featuring clothes
from A’gaci, Banana Republic and Cache'. Sponsors in-
cluded: Mali Corpus (stylist), Mary Chapa (makeup artist),
Veronica Lake (makeup artist), Ralph Magaña-publisher,
Contempo Magazine, Natalie Bugarin-Fashion Editor,
Contempo Magazine, Fox Aguilar-photographer, Con-
tempo Magazine, Hermes music and our host, RED. AMA
had one success event with a large supportive crowd
eager to view the style show at RED, a sophisticated
new dinner and cocktail venue on the Miracle Mile just
west of 10th. Street. Twenty two models paraded on the
Contempo runway two or three outfits representing fall
inventories from the sponsor retailers. Feature photogra-
pher Fox Aguilar set up just off the runway end with spe-
cial lighting to snap various shots along the path with his
Canon-EOS 5D-Mark II, and captured the really great
images you see here. The event was a great fashion es-
cape and gave the A.M.A. marketeers a chance to show
off their talents.

Now what exactly is AMA?
AMA or The American Marketing Association is the world's
largest and most comprehensive professional society of
marketers. It is a professional non-profit organization for
marketers that promotes education and assists personal
and professional career development among marketing
professionals while encouraging the advancement, sci-
ence, and ethical practice of marketing disciplines. AMA
is the only organization that provides direct benefits to
marketing professionals in both business and academia,
including all levels of marketing practitioners, educators
and students. Nonetheless, AMA is an organization that
thrives on the idea of growing as a professional. It is that
main reason this organization dedicates itself in fundrais-
ing in the professional level. The AMA looks forward with
plans for more events that will showcase more marketing
projects. So keep your eyes peeled!

(photo)Graham led The Post to
prominence and earned a reputation as one of the most
admired women of her time.
By: Erik Perales, Ralph Magaña
From Clara Barton (founder of the American Red Cross), to Mary Edwards Walker (first female to receive the Med-al of Honor), to Florence Butt (Founder of H-E-B) and Oprah Winfrey (self-made billionaire through television) women have been leaving their own legacy in business, showing the world they can swim with the sharks. Accord-ing to Forbes, “women make up 46.9% of the U.S. work-force and they will be creating over half (4.86-million) of the projected new jobs to come in the next six years.”
A 1940’s symbol recently resurfaced, known as the “We can do it” poster that once highlighted American women for their spirit in filling the void left by men who had to go off and fight (women did not have access to combat duty back then) during the last world war. That same “we can do it” attitude that took women out of the home and into factories during the war is taking them into board rooms as they now represent a much larger and better paid movement, giving the old poster a new purpose.
The impact of women in the business world culture has been dynamic in the last decade. But, in a big way, this trend really began in the 60’s with the burning of the bras. Although women didn’t have much power, their atti-tude was rich with ambition and determination, and per-sistence paid off. The first single event that catapulted the movement occurred in 1963 when Katherine Graham became the publisher of the Washington Post after her husband’s death. She remained there until 1991.
Today, you don’t have to be a lip executive to see how women have climbed quickly in the business world-it ’s all around us. For us, most of the businesses our magazine deals with are either run or owned by women. A record number of companies (4%) are now run by women who started getting their feet wet in the 1970’s. Firsts, IBM ap-pointed a woman, Ginni Rometty, to lead the company. Wal-Mart appointed Rosalind Brewer as its first woman and first African-American to head Sam’s Club.
Having the ability to multi-task comes to their advan-tage when running their own businesses. A study done by Forbes found that In the earning of bachelor degrees, women are now outpacing men by 68%. When start-ing their own businesses, women earned only 1/8 of the funding that men earn; however, they still have had the strength and ability to break through the barriers and lead their companies to success.
That entrepreneurial ascension and the drive it inspires in young women today translates into increased market influence and buying power. According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, female entrepreneurs gener-ate $2.3 trillion into the American economy and employ more than 18 million people. The traditional economic influences are still there ie: the broad spectrum of domes-tic purchasing, but what has changed is their level of af-fluent spending. According to the Economist, women are the single biggest driver of the global economy. They are responsible for 85 percent of all consumer spending, representing $7 trillion in personal and business spend-ing — roughly the size of Japan’s economy and it looks like the trend is well established.
30 years ago all the guys in junior high school would note how, even then, the girls made all the good grades. And we would scratch our heads, ponder for a moment the consequences, and give it no more thought. Well, nothing has changed by all contemporary standards as women out-score men overall in primary, secondary, and in higher educational pursuits and as mature business women’s incomes continue to rise. The now famous poster of the 40’s could be replaced soon with another, more appropriate portrayal of a board room chief executive wearing a chiffon scarf.

It’s not easy getting over the hill, specially when you are trying to keep pace with dynamic industries like fashion magazines, construction, real estate, and all the newer generation gizmos. I like keeping busy, staying on top of my game, and giv-ing it all I got. But, sometimes my busy lifestyle keeps me from being at my best and I need a boost to reach the top. So, I keep my distance from those high octane “cafenators” that only give me a kick in the head, and later on, a headache. Instead, about 10 years ago, I discovered a vitamin and mineral supplement, Regeneration by Nature’s Plus, and I have taken it ever since.Regeneration is a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement that I know will replen-ish all the “right stuff” I am lacking from missed meals. It’s loaded with botanical extracts and antioxidants for protection and brain power vitamins like Vitamin B6
at 2500% DV! It’s liquid ingredients come in a softgel casing that is easier on the stomach than powdered capsules. Find Regeneration at Major Health Foods in Tiffany Plaza, and tell them Ralph sent you!

As early as 4000B.C. Ancient Egyptians, both men and women, wore distinct eye make up, rouge and perfumed oils that soft-ened the skin and prevented burning in the sun and damage from the sandy desert winds. They also adorned their statues with different types of cosmetics. The higher the person’s status, the more clothes and make-up they wore.
Ancient Egyptian eye make up was extremely elaborate and mostly char-acterized by the almond eye look. The eye make they used concentrated in providing color to their eye lashes, eye lids and eye brows. The favorite eye make up colors were black, blue and green. The powders used to create the eye make up were ground on a palette then mixed with water to form a paste. The black coloring of Ancient Egyptian eye make up was achieved by the use of galena, a blue-grey form of lead sulfide that was mined in the eastern dessert near Gebel el-Zeit. When mixed with soot it becomes kohl which was used to make black eye makeup. Ancient Egyptian Physicians prescribed the use of kohl against eye diseases, while galena, was known for having
disinfectant qualities. Kohl was effective at shielding the ancient egyptian from a sever dessert sun and was also used to discourage insects.
The green coloring of Ancient Egyptian eye make up was achieved by the use green pigment called malachite-a mineral pigment dating back from antiquity that was imported from the Sinai Desert. The malchite stone was first crushed and then mixed as green eye make up.
Ancient Egyptians used a type of rouge to stain their lips and cheeks. The red coloring used by Ancient Egyptian in make up was achieved by the use of ochre. Red ochre is a pigment made from naturally tinted clay hydrated iron oxide. To make the ochre used for make up the clay was first mined from the ground, washed to separate sand from ochre and then dried in the sun and sometimes burned to enhance the natural color.

THE JEANS withBORDER ROOTSTAKES ON TEXAS!
With all the chatter afoot in the greater market-place these days creating a brand isn’t easy and it is particularly challenging for the fashion indus-try. But, one pair of entrepreneurs with Valley roots, Aimee Miller and Megan Carreker seem to have found their way through the fog and successfully launching their own brand of jeans labeled Hip Chixs. These two border girls are the first women in the country to brand a pair of jeans. But they aren’t just any jeans. Their Hip Chix brand of denims are designed to accomodate features women care most about-comfort and styling.
Both living in Dallas, Aimee has always been in-spired by the world of denim. A woman about town, Aimee loves to sport the latest in fashion – particularly jeans. She has a huge denim collec-tion, but wanted to start her own line because she’s always been in search of the perfect pair. An avid runner, Aimee knows the need for comfortable clothing, whether she’s circling White Rock Lake in the morning or going out with friends at night. Hip Chixs, like Aimee, is all about style and comfort. She also has a great passion for animals – she owns two rescue dogs and is involved in several Dallas rescue organizations. Aimee’s sexy, gregarious and energetic nature is evident in the creation of this brand’s personality.
Megan, a ten year veteran in the fashion industry, and whose career stems from the fashion design and photography stylist world, has her ear to the ground for the latest trends. As a designer she sat through the fittings, created patterns, sewn proto-types, forecasted revenues, worked hands on with textiles and colors to create the Hip Chix look. Her closet holds endless pairs of shoes, scarves, mas-cara and red lipstick – her other fashion passions. And, while Megan loves an eclectic, chic look with lots of jewelry, she can constantly be found in her favorite jeans, a tank top and a great necklace - as that tends to be the best garb when you have two tots to raise (ages two and five).
Hip Chix jeans are now available in Houston, Dal-las, and Los Angeles and they recent visited the Valley to speak to retailers about supporting the brand.
