PIKES PEAK IRON MARICOPA

Went to the Pikes Peak iron deposits of Kaiser Steel Co. in the Hieroglyphic Mts., in approximately S. 24 T6N R2W where 2 drifts and a x-cut were examined, mainly for the purpos-e of estima ting the manganese content; no samples were taken. As a matter of fact, no samples or measurements were taken at any of the deposits, however~ several rolls of 35 mm film were used. GW WR 4/22/76

__ ~bs~r~tt from IIArizona Iron Ore Depositsll in IRON COMMODITY file: The Pike's Peak Iron Mine, Maricopa County, lies 6 to 8 miles west of Lake Pleasant (Sections 8, 17-19, T6N, R1W and Sections 13, 24 & 25, T6N, R2W) is reported ' to be optioned by Kaiser Steel Company. The ore occurs in 10 large lenses (and some smaller ones) of limonite and hematite impregnated in or replacing schist. These ore lenses lie in a zone which is 500 to 2,000 feet wide and 16,000 feet in length. The lenses are generally parallel and trend northeastward. The U.S. Bureau of Mines tested this deposit and estimated 100,000,000 tons of material which averaged about 30 percent iron, variable but high silica, and 2.5 to 3 percent manganese. The bureau work is reported in U.S. Bureau of Mines R.I. 5319.

According to otto E. Elvert, who millS iron claims in the Agua }l ..... ria District, , Kaiser Steel Co. brought the Pikes Peak Mine from !Barnes for ~~il,50o.?ooo.

John D. Co l eman reported that he had been advised that Kaiser Steel was drilling t be Pikes Peak iron deposit. They ~~8re reported t o have begun a 1-Jeek ago.

----.----.-----I'Jr. D.P. NcCarthy, 551 H. 2nd Pl., l1esa, reported that Kai.ser Steel Co. had been building roads on the Pikes Peak Iron deposit. He stated that it IrJas rumored that they plan some dri lling , but so far only roads v-Iere built. This may be assessment work. This informati.on indicates that Kaiser Steel Co. still has the claims optioned.

FIELD ENGINEERS REPORT

Date September 23, 1975

Engineer Ken A. Phi 11 ips

Subject: Current Sta tus and immediate plans

References: Previous memos by L.A. Smith and map showing property locations.

In a telephone conversation with Harrison Scott, Kaiser Steel, Oakland,

California, he explained their present plans for the Pikes Peak Iron

deposit.

They plan to drill two relatively deep holes later this fall to recover

samples for metallurgical testing. The hole- will be drilled down dip

and are not intended to be used to deter~ine additional reserves. The

metallurgical testing is being handled by a private laboratory and the

recovered samples wi 11 be used to verify the magnetiC character of the

ore with depth. Beneficiation by flotation is one of · the methods being

investigated.

As to 'Vlhere the Pikes Peak depoei t fi ts into Kaiser' s fu ture is not yet

known. "file typical ore grade is i.n the 25-30 percent range ~.,hereas the

grade at Eagle Mtn. in California (which feeds Kaiser's Fontana plant)

is in the high 30·s. It is doubtfull that Pikes Peak will feed the

Fontana plant. One possible use of Pikes Peak ore might be in the pro

duct10n of upgradedlpellents for the small electric furnace iron plants.

For such use the or:e would likely be upgraded at the mine site.
