Brothers and Sisters of the Lodge: September is a very tough month for our family…and this year it seemed to be espe-cially hard. As you may recall, this September 11th was nearly identical to the infamous day in 2001. . . clear skies, mild temperature and what some would consider, a perfect Septem-

ber day; but for us, just a sad reminder of what that day took from us. So if Jan and I seemed a bit distracted the past few weeks, I apologize.

The last newsletter went to print before the Luau…but my prediction for a successful night was accurate. Everyone who at-tended seemed to have good time. As usual, the menu and the food was both plentiful and delicious. Cudos to Anita Montuori and her Committee. It was a wonderful night.

Latest update on Lodge events: Bingo and Vegas con-tinue to maintain on a positive course. Again, I want to thank those members who pitch in to help. To those who still refuse to help us, I appeal to you to come down and give us a few hours…remember, it is your Lodge; and to maintain it takes money and work, so recon-sider your thoughts and join us. We could use your help.

The magic of DJ Ray is still working…between his music and Rose’s constant vigilance, the place is filled with happy and content dancers. Thank you Ray and thank you Rose for being a part of our Lodge.

September was a slow month for our catering. I am sure most people were trying to get their families ready for the school…either driving them to college, or just shopping for clothes and sup-plies needed for the school year. Hopefully, October will bring a resurgence of customers and some income to the Lodge.

We took the break in catering to do some needed repairs. The outside front stucco was repaired and painted. This was one of those things most of us never see, but it had to be done. We also have been battling a chronic water leak and each rain storm brings new challenges. Hopefully that too will be corrected in the coming weeks. As you know, most of the appliances we have are “up in age.” Fortunately, they are quality items but they need repairs every month…a fan, a belt, a gasket or whatever. It has been slow, but we are still in the game.

A drain pipe in the bar split and thankfully Paul Perticone came over immediately, replaced parts and repaired it. That is something that could not be put off. We hope to “clean up”

the bar in the coming months. Hopefully, with a new bar top, some paint and a few tables…it will really look like a bar / lounge. Maybe more of you will come down and “hang out” and enjoy the Lodge.

We have a few other items the Board of Directors has been supportive of…and as we raise the money, they will be done. I will keep you appraised as we go along.

This past month brought two new venues to our Lodge: a Saturday night dance run by Joanne and Gene Blennau. I know they put a lot of effort into doing this for the Lodge; and yes, all the income was donated to us. Thank you and the volunteers who helped make your night a success.

We also had our Ladies Auxiliary Fashion Show. I can not believe how many hours these ladies put into this to make it suc-ceed. Thank you ladies for another wonderful event for our Lodge.

This month we went back in history and once again tried our luck with an Art Auction…As some of you may recall, we ran one a few years back and Chris Schiavo wanted to try it again. He certainly put in the time and effort to make it succeed. Thank you Chris.

The medical list is still growing. Jim Caravella is still going for treatments. Fran and Al Barone seem to be mending well, nice to see Fran back at the tables. Faye Ferante was admitted to the hospital for some tests, but is now home and on the slow road to recovery. Mike Feratto still showing positive signs of recovery. And what would a month be like without Tom Lepore getting something replaced or rebuilt. I guess he saw how well Nunzio was doing and he elected to have his hip replaced. Hopefully, Frank Acerno is mending from his heart surgery…and the latest is Brother Sal Pipia who recently had some heart surgery and is still in the hospital. Also, Barbara Mangano who is having some medical issues.

I hope you will all join us for the Long Island Columbus Day parade. Remember, we have a bus leaving from the Lodge at 10:30 and after the parade, it will return you to the Lodge where we will have dinner.

On a sad note, we lost two of our senior members…Brothers Barney Ferrante and JoJo Rannazzisi have passed away this month; they will be missed.

Respectfully, John Vigiano

President’s Message

About Our Heritage . . . Some Italians go on to make a mark or take a stand in our country, yet little about them is known or remembered. Four Italians were at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876: John Martini, Augusto De Voto, Giovanni Casella and Lieutenant Charles De Rudio. All four survived the massacre. John Martini/Martin was born Giovanni Chrisostomo Martini in either Sala Consilina, Salerno or Apricale, Liguria (records differ on his hometown). The young Giovanni fought for Italy‘s independence, serving as a drummer boy under Garibaldi. After the Risorgimento, he left for the United States, where he anglicized his name and became known as John Martin. He served as a U.S. Army soldier for 30 years. During that time he was assigned to the 7th Cavalry as orderly bugler of the day, at Little Big Horn, carried Custer‘s last message; and credited to be the last soldier to see Colonel George Armstong Custer alive. After retirement from the Army, he worked as a ticket-taker for the New York subway system. John Martin has been immortalized in Arlington National Cemetery's “Taps Project” - a permanent exhibit honoring fa-mous buglers in the US Army.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Fall is here, and as I write this message, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. “Goodbye Summer.” As October begins to set in the mem-bers of the Brumidi Lodge and Ladies

Auxiliary are ready to “keep the Lion on the move!!” On Sept. 18th, our own members D.J. Gene & Joanne held a Fundraiser for the Lodge and set the room swinging and swaying with great music. It was a great night. Thank you to those that at-tended. What would Fall be without Our Annual Fashion Show? Chair-lady Lorena Lanzilotta, Co-Chairlady Lucille DiNardo and their committee did a fantastic job. This is always a great evening and a very special event for our Auxiliary. Many hours of planning and endless work goes into making this successful; and you Ladies did it again. Many thanks to the Sisters on the Fashion Show Committee and all our members that attended. As you all may already know, October is “Italian Heritage Month”.

On Sunday, October 10th , we will be stepping out in Huntington for the Long Island Columbus Day Parade. Hope you will join us to celebrate your Italian Pride. Saturday, October 30th is our Halloween Dance, dust off those costumes and join us for our “Spookiest Event” of the year. Mass for the Deceased Members will be held in November. More info to follow. As I close this message, I would like to remind everyone that the next three months are always the busiest here at the Lodge. I would like to thank you all for your support in the past and con-tinued support during this upcoming season. Please continue to support our Vegas and Bingo nights. It is truly appreciated. Please continue to pray for sick and deceased members. God Bless you All. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Fraternally, President Diana

Surrounding the nucleus of Columbus Day parades and festivities are the accomplish-ments and contributions of Italians in America and Americans of Italian descent. This is an ideal time to reflect and identify with our heritage and culture. Italian Americans are said to place a strong emphasis on family, church and fraternity. Perhaps it's also an ideal time to embrace those family and fraternal qualities and bring a brother or sister into the fold. Thursday, October 7th at 7:30 p.m. is our Lodge Membership Drive. Contact your family and friends and invite them to learn about the Order Sons of Italy . . . Who we are . . . What we do; and enjoy a pasta dinner. Brothers and Sisters, take an active role in the growth of your Lodge and Brumidi family.

Happy 50th Anniversary to Salvatore (Sonny) & Angela Mento. Love is to have witnessed what they shared for fifty years. God Bless them on this special occasion. ~ Lucy Caldone
