Brothers and Sisters:
Felice Estate Passa una buona estate!
"Summer was on the way;
Jem and I awaited it with impatience. Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back
screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched
landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill." ~ Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Summer Solstice 2017 begins Wednesday, June 21st at 12:24 A.M. EDT.
What is the Summer Solstice? The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflect-ing the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice). In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. This summer solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. At the winter solstice, just the opposite occurs: The Sun is at its southernmost point and is low in the sky. Its rays hit the North-ern Hemisphere at an oblique angle, creating the feeble win-ter sunlight. In ancient Egypt, summer was the start of the new year. The rising of the star Sirius roughly coincided with the summer sol-stice and the annual flooding of the Nile River. The biggest event of the year: the Total Solar Eclipse on August 21, which will sweep across the continental U.S. on August 21st. Astonishing summer solstice in Florence, Italy Florence’s summer solstice: a unique phenomenon, a spell-binding vision not to be missed occurred on Thursday, June 13th, and again on June 21 (summer solstice), Florence’s cathedral revealed one of its hidden features, probably the most singular and surprising one. At exactly 12.30PM the sun’s beams filtered into Brunelleschi’s dome passing through the hole in a small bronze disk inserted high up in the wall, and form a luminous circle which overlap perfectly with that of a white marble disk inlaid on the cathedral’s floor of the Chapel of Cross, on the left of the High Altar. This fascinating spectacle is created by the cathedral’s gnomon, (from the Greek γνώμων, it is the structure – column, dial or hole – used for the observation of the sun’s meridian altitude) and takes place every year at midday on June 21st since 1475. Installed by a famous astronomer of the time, Paolo Dal Pozzo Toscanelli, friend of Brunelleschi and correspondent of Christopher Columbus, the gnomon which is the largest in the world and 90 meters high, was used to determine the duration of the year and calculate the summer solstice. It also served as an indicator of sowing and harvest times, and to study the constancy of sun’s route through the sky and, thanks to its accuracy, was used for years even after the invention of the telescope.
One of the most popular traditions and celebrations in Ven-ice is la Festa del Redentore, (The Redeemer’s Feast): its his-tory dates back to 1577 to celebrate the end of a massive plague outbreak, celebrated with the completion of the stunning church of the same name on the Giudecca Island. Today, The Redentore Feast is a deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment, thanks to the Sat-urday night phantasmagorical fireworks’ display, attracting thousands of visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades, from a game of light and colors on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basin, lights up the spires, domes and bell towers of the city. At dusk, plenty of boats traditionally decked out with flower festoons, colorful balloons and bright Chinese lamps begin to flock into both St. Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Awaiting the firework display, which starts at 11.30 p.m. and lasts late into the night, people enjoy a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialties. This year the event will take place over the weekend of July 15 - 16, 2017. "Let us never know what old age is. Let us know the happi-ness time brings, not count the years." ~ Ausonius "God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well." ~ Voltaire "Success is like reaching an important birthday and finding you're exactly the same." ~ Audrey Hepburn Ferragosto is an Italian and Sammarinese (the people of the country of San Marino) public holiday celebrated on 15 August, coinciding with the major Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary. By metonymy (is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is referred to by the name of something closely associated with that thing or concept), it is also the height of the Italian summer vacation period around mid-August, which may be a long weekend (ponte di ferragosto) or most of August. The Catholic feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary also falls on 15 August, and is a major feast and Holy Day of Obligation "Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!" ~ Dr. Seuss My wish for you, Brothers and Sisters is that this summer be full of warm days, the smell of fresh cut grass and the ocean breeze, sand between your toes, cool nights filled with shooting stars, and LOVE for you ALL and may you always see in a 'kaleidoscope of shades'. See you ALL at the next General Meeting, Lodge function/event. Don't hesitate to reach out to me anytime, if you wish to talk, have a question or concern. Always, keep in your prayers our Brothers and Sisters who are sick; our deceased members; and ALL the Service men and women that protect and keep us safe each and every day here and abroad. As well as our police, fire and EMS who put their lives on the line each day to help us when we are in need. God Bless, In Unity,
Daniel
