“Connecting People to the Transforming and Redeeming Love of Jesus Christ” www.threetimbers.org t December 2, 2018 Main Text: Isaiah 9:1-9 Optional Ice Breaker What was a gift you hoped for as a child at Christmas? How did it feel when you did/did not receive it? The BIG IDEA Knowing Where to Find Hope Getting in the Word Read Isaiah 8:19-22, is this something that we see happening today in our culture? Give some examples and some reasons as to why you think this is taking place? Understanding the context of how hopeless things were for the people of God, how does Isaiah 4:2 & 7:14 give them hope and how does it give you hope in the midst of our dark world? Why is the word “nevertheless” so important that begin chapter nine? How does this word give people hope then and now? \ Look up the definition of this word and talk about how we can be people who live the “nevertheless” in our lives when things are dark all around us. The people walking in darkness had seen a great light, the light bulb came on and they realized where hope would truly come from, when did you “see the light” and realize where hope comes from? Read Judges chapters 6-7 to better understand the “day of Midian’s defeat,” how does this give you hope when you are facing overwhelming circumstances? Jesus frees us from the yoke of sin and slavery that burdens all of us, what has He freed you from and what do you need Him to free you from? How are you trying to free yourself instead of looking to Jesus? Talk about the “names of hope” assigned to Jesus in verse 6, break each one of them down and discuss how Jesus gives us hope in these areas. What does Isaiah teach us about Christ’s Kingdom, how long will it last, what is it established on and how does this give you hope? The BIG Question Is: Is Your Hope from within or from Above?
