Redeeming points for an upgrade award

It’s a two-step process:

1. Redeem points for an upgrade award and you’ll receive an upgrade certificate via email.

2. Request the upgrade (for a ticketed reservation) online, by phone, or travel agency.

From the Upgrades tab on the Redeem Points page, expand the applicable geographic location to find the upgrade award detail.

You can click on the award code to see the award Terms and Conditions.

Click ‘Redeem Now’.

The Redeem Points pop-up summarizes the award scope, award point value and your current balance.

Enter the quantity of awards you want to redeem. The certificate will be emailed to all Travel Managers registered on the account. Agree to the Terms and Conditions and click ‘Confirm’.

The confirmation page will have the Authorization Number and award expiration. The recipient of the certificate will use the authorization number when requesting the upgrade.

Once redemption is complete, an email is sent to all Travel Managers registered on the account. The email includes authorization numbers for each award ordered – the traveler will need this email when processing their upgrade.

Details of the point redemption are on your Account Summary, on the Transactions tab. You can click on the arrow to view redemption details like award type, confirmation number and authorization number.

Requesting an upgrade

After the reservation is ticketed, the traveler can request an upgrade online at business.aa.com or by phone:

1. In the United States and Canada, contact American Airlines Meeting Services at 800-433-1790 Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (CT) and Saturday and Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (CT).

2. Outside of the United States and Canada, contact your local American Airlines reservations or ticket office.
