08:30-09:00 Registrations

09:00-09-10 Chairman’s IntroductionCostas Tjiapouras, President of the PMI Cyprus Chapter

Session 1 Standards And Methodologies

09:10-09:40 The Power of Project Leadership - Seven Leadership Lessons The ‘seven lessons’ I learned about leadership since I was 17 was when I joined Siemens as a ‘Youth Training Scheme’ Trainee, and I ap-

plied to my projects what all managers could apply to theirs as they make the transition into a leader. This is an interactive, storytelling and personal presentation and it starts with the hardest interview I’ve ever had……….one where I was only asked three very simple questions! Paul Hodgkins, Executive Director,Paul Hodgkins Project Consultancy, United Kingdom

09:40-10:00 Professionalism and dedication in project management - why bother? In times of change and financial instability many workplaces look into ways to reduce cost. Under such circumstances it is even more

important to ensure the desired effect of change initiatives. I will argue why this requires professional and dedicated project managers. Merete Munch Lange, Project Manager, Miles, Norway

10:00-10:15 The value of portfolio management for the effective implementation of organizational strategyPortfolio management is a standardized management framework that bridges the space between strategy, change initiatives leading to the strategic objectives and their successful execution. It has to be performed in an organizational environment broad-er than the portfolio itself. The purpose of the presentation is to briefly present the management framework and the benefits that result from adopting standardized portfolio management. Moreover, the presentation aims to create awareness to senior management that nowadays in a constantly changing environment extreme events are ubiquitous and need to be proactively navigated in a wide range of dynamical systems. These, for business, primarily include organizational strategic change initiatives implemented via a portfolio management system. Panos Chatzipanos, CEO - ECONTECH SA, Consultant - World Bank Group, Core Committee Member - PMI-ANSI, PMI Greece Chapter President

10:15-10:35 Audit by PMBOK - Auditing major IT projects using the PMI methodology Internal Audit is an important function in every publically traded company. One of the significant audit objectives is audit-

ing major projects an organization is carrying out, in order to mitigate risks and assure governance, policies, proce-dures and project outcomes aligned with the organization’s business and IT strategy. This presentation will focus on IT projects and will provide an overview of the methodology for auditing major multi-million projects performed by one of the largest Israeli banks. It will present the “Audit by PMBOK” methodology and give some “real-life” examples. Jenny Guber, PMP, CISA ,VP Methodology & Standards,PMI, Israel

10:35-10:45 Questions & Discussion

10:45-11:15 Networking Coffee Break

Session 2 Case Studies

11:15-11:35 Managing Projects in the Face of Meddling Stakeholders This presentation is on a failed project leadership. It addresses the difficult project management dilemma of interfering stakeholders.

It probes the difficulties in managing principal stakeholders and the sponsor through a project, and how they can unwittingly com-promise it. Through the Titanic case study the presentation examines the construction project that designed, built, and launched the ship through a project management lens. It reviews the background as to how White Star initiated and planned a project to outpace its competition with 3 super liners, using the latest in emerging technologies. The sponsor’s determination “to create the ultimate passenger (first class) experience” became the project mantra. The presentation then analyzes each of the project stages and shows how stakeholder meddling that started in the requirements process, caused continual problems for the naval architects. The project leader’s inability to control the meddling led to compromises which then led to serious flaws in a supposedly “perfect ship,” considered so safe that it did not even need a full complement of lifeboats. With the safety systems compromised the probability of a disaster increased substantially with the pomp and grandeur of a maiden voyage. The presentation also examines how through (mis) communication the ship was considered by practically all, including the public, to be an unsinkable ship. This raised the compla-cency, during the early days of the ship’s operations, and allowed major mistakes to be made which led to the disaster. All of these disastrous compromises and mistakes were fully avoidable. It resulted in a collision that put an end to the ship on its maiden voyage.
