At Eucharist in the Cathedral on February 25 of this year Bishop Roger Foys inaugurated the Year of Women Religious in the Diocese of Covington. He was joined by retired Bishop William Hughes and many priests of the diocese. The Covington Cathedral was filled with women religious from the nine com-munities represented in the diocese, many of our co-workers and friends. One of the most touching moments of that day was the public renewal of commitment to religious life by all the religious present. The hope of all who attended that day was to stir the embers and fan the flame of consecrated life. Since February the diocesan newspaper has carried numerous articles about various aspects of religious life and interesting bits of history about each community from the Dioc-esan Archives. We have received supportive letters from friends and parishes where we’ve served . In the fall of this year each community will host an Open House for the public. The official closing of the year will be February 2, 2013. Anyone interested in reading more and seeing pictures of the events can visit our webpage, www.stwalburg.org for a link to the Diocese of Covington. Meanwhile, join us in offering the following prayer written by Sr. Deborah for this grace-filled year.

O God, through the grace of Baptism youmade of us a faithful people.

You call each of usto serve you and the Church

in various ways.

We give you thanks for the giftsand ministries of women

Through their lives and serviceyou have blessed our diocese

with many living traditions of prayer, community life, apostolic works

and the perfection of charity.

and bring to fulfillment the good workyou have begun in them.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christwho abides with you and the Holy spirit,

by Sr. Andrea Collopy, OSBDec. 7—At 4 pm today Mark Czarnik, a professional videographer, and his team arrived to begin taping “The Benedictine Sisters of St. Wal-burg Monastery” segment for the 2012 celebration of the Year of Women Re-ligious in the Diocese of Covington. Portions of the Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours as well as less formal activities were recorded. The team will also visit Villa Madonna Academy and Villa Madonna Montessori.Dec. 11—The Northern Kentucky Community Chorus and Orchestra, of which Sr. Mariana Kirk is a long-time member, presented an inspira-tional concert of Christmas music at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. A full 45 minutes of various aspects of the Magnificat delighted the audience. Traditional sacred carols completed the program which received a standing ovation. A good number of community members attended.Dec. 19—Today our employees en-joyed the annual Christmas party with an added attraction—a real hayride around the property with bale of hay as seats. Accompanying the wagon were two decorated horses ridden by our cook, Maureen Smain and her friend Stacey Brosky, administrator of Villa Madonna Montessori.Dec. 21—Immediately after Morning Prayer Sr. Stella Gough, Infirmary and House Coordinator, announced the death of Sr. Marilyn Thiel which had just occurred. Sr. Marilyn was taken to St. Elizabeth Emergency Room on Sat-urday. Her condition gradually became a serious concern and her transfer to ICU occurred early Wednesday. Her death was unexpected and a shock.Dec. 24-25—A subdued but joyful celebration of the Nativity was shared by the community, subdued in the absence of Sr. Marilyn but joyful in the presence of the Incarnate Word. Congratulations, Sr. Dorothy Schuette!

2012 is a year of celebra-tion for Sr. Dorothy Schuette. On June 9 she celebrated her 50th Jubilee, marking 50 years of monastic profession. Bishop Roger Foys (pictured right with Sr. Dorothy and Sr. Mary Cathe-rine Wenstrup) was the presider at Eucharist and guest at a luncheon that followed. The next day Moth-er of God Parish held receptions for Sr. Dorothy in between Mass-es, and the mayor of Covington declared it Sr. Dorothy Schuette Day. On July 16 Sr. Dorothy

received a surprise. She was attending the Kentucky Department of Correc-tions’ annual luncheon/awards cer-emony and as the awards ceremony part was coming to a close, LaDonna Thompson, Commissioner of the De-partment, (pictured left with Sr. Doro-thy) announced that Sister Dorothy Schuette was the recipient of the 2012 Lucille Hurt Robuck “Commitment to Corrections” Award. Everyone else at the luncheon, including Bill Jones, Director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Covington, who made sure she came to the luncheon, knew about the award. The award is given

annually to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding con-tribution to the field of corrections during the past year. The program which Sr. Dorothy was not allowed to see until after she received the award states, “Sr. Dorothy ... [coordinates] volunteers who visit offenders in local jails to discuss their challenges and communicate resources. She is a tireless advocate, and her years of service are evidence of her commitment to assist offenders, and their families, as they transition from prison or jail to their community.” Sr. Dorothy serves part-time at Mother of God Parish as Pastoral Associate and part-time at Catholic Charities as Jail Ministry Coordinator.

Sister Marilyn Thiel, OSB was born to Elmer G. and Marie Cecilia Bender Thiel on November 20, 1932 and given the name Marilyn Ann at her baptism. Her mother died in January when Marilyn was but two months old and her father’s parents cared for her while she was a young child. Marilyn’s father married Mary Gertrude Anna. Together they had seven children—David, Michael, Charles, Linda, Sandy, Steve and Rita. Mari-lyn rejoiced in her seven siblings and they remained a close-knit group always. Charles is now deceased. In her early years Marilyn was very close to her younger cousin, Elaine Poage, and they remained close—almost like sisters—always. Both girls attended Villa Ma-donna Academy where Marilyn became well acquainted with the Benedictine Sisters. After graduation in 1951 she became a postulant at St. Walburg Mon-astery on September 15 and a novice on March 21, 1952 with a new name, Sr. Marita. When given the option to return to her baptismal name in the 1960’s, Sr. Marita again became Marilyn. Sr. Marilyn was missioned to parish schools and completed her edu-cation courses on Saturdays and in summers. She received her B.A. degree from Villa Madonna College and an M.A. from Xavier University. Marilyn exercised her piano and organ skills in parishes where she taught. Her own summation of her professional activities appeared in the 50th Reunion book-let of the VMA Class of ’51. She says: “I taught grades 2-8 for 30 years and was organist wherever I taught. During this time I was principal at 2 schools and was a director of the CCD program, pre-school through 12th grade. After years of teaching, I worked with the elderly at Madonna Manor for 13 years.” The schools in which Marilyn taught were St. Paul, Mary Queen of Heaven, St. Henry, St. Francis Xavier (Falmouth), Blessed Sacrament, St. Patrick (LaJunta, CO), and Villa Madonna Academy. Sr. Marilyn retired in 2000 and took an active role at the monastery. She was often a member of the schola (choir) and took her turn as a cantor. In recent years her activities were limited but she contributed whenever and wherever she could. She greatly enjoyed the company of friends and co-workers. Sr. Marilyn’s death was sudden and a shock to the community. Dif-ficulty with breathing caused problems. She moved to the infirmary on Friday and entered the hospital on Sunday with congestive heart failure. A worsening condition took her to ICU where she died peacefully at 6:19 a.m. on Wednes-day, December 21. Sr. Marilyn is survived by this religious community, six brothers and sisters, a devoted cousin, and many nieces and nephews.

The traditional Christ-mas brunch was enjoyed by commu-nity and guests after the Christmas Day Eucharist.Dec. 31—An eventful and unusual Christmas week ended with the Feast of the Holy Family on Friday. Saturday Evening Prayer celebrated the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God. There was the annual New Year’s Eve party with refreshments, games and good spirit, and a few hearty souls stayed up for the fireworks to celebrate the beginning of 2012. Tonight we celebrated her presence here and her achievement of her BA degree in education. A special dinner of Sr. Petra’s favorite American foods—pizza and ice cream—was enjoyed by all. In Amsterdam Sr. Petra will connect with Sr. Gaudentia, who has been studying in Minnesota. From Amsterdam they will travel home to Tanzania.Jan. 17-19—Sr. Mary Catherine Wenstrup left for Rapid City, South Dakota, where she assisted the Bene-dictine community of St. Martin Mon-astery in preparation for an election of prioress.Jan. 26—Srs. Dorothy Schuette and Mary Carol Hellmann, as well as Lorita Wadsworth, an infirmary nurse, made the annual six-hour trip to Eddyville Prison to visit the men on death row. They visited with the war-den, celebrated Eucharist with eleven red-garbed prisoners and visited with them for a full hour. Observations: an aging group of men, no executions in sight, one man may be released after 30 years, the generous assistance of these men to each other, an apprecia-tion of the visitors. Sister Carla Cook, OSB was born to Carl and Lucille French Cook on October 1, 1920 and given the name Rosemary at her baptism. Mr. Cook’s first wife had died, leav-ing three young daughters who were Rosemary’s half-sisters; two brothers followed her into the family. The Cooks belonged to Holy Cross Parish where Rosemary attended school for twelve years and became familiar with the Benedictine Sisters. After graduation she worked at Shillito’s in Cincinnati and enjoyed her job but soon felt a call to religious life. Rosemary became a postulant at St. Walburg Monastery on September 8, 1941 and a novice known as Sister Carla on June 29, 1942. First and perpetual monastic profession occurred in 1943 and 1946; silver, golden and diamond jubi-lees in 1968, 1993 and 2003. Sr. Carla served in schools as teacher and sometimes princi-pal from 1946-1983 at St. Joseph, Crescent Springs, Holy Cross, St. Patrick in La Junta, CO, St. Pius X, St. Anthony, Blessed Sacrament and Villa Madonna Academy. After her retirement from teaching she earned a certificate in Spiritual Direction. Some sisters remember her weekends of reflection with them. She was closely associated with the New Jerusalem Community and became a lifelong friend of Fr. Rich-ard Rohr, OFM and Fr. John Quigley, OFM. During these years Sr. Carla resided at the Knoll and at Villa Madonna Academy; in 1996 she moved to the monastery. Health needs took her to the infirmary in 2002. Sr. Carla developed deep and lasting friendships. These were a steady source of support; her hearty laugh was a joy to all. In time movement became difficult for her. Good days would find her in her recliner but these became fewer. Her mood was cheerful and her ap-preciation deep for any little service. She regularly offered candy to her visitors. A fall and two trips to the hospital followed and her condition deteriorated. Friends and family visited this past week, prepared for her death which came peacefully on Wednesday, March 7 at 11:20 p.m.

Sister Regis Egger, OSB, was born to Joseph and Mary Magdalena Friedman Egger on April 3, 1916 and given the name Loretta Frances at her baptism.

Seventeen children, seven boys and ten girls, were born to the Egger family, three of whom died in infancy. The area where the Eggers lived was mountain-ous, beautiful country where hard work was a necessity. In her early twenties Loretta met Fr. Regis Barrett, OSB, a friend of the Benedictines of St. Walburg Monastery. It was to this monastery that he directed her and where she was received as a pos-

tulant on January 10, 1940. Loretta became a novice, Sister Regis, on June 28, 1940. She made first and perpetual monastic profession in 1941 and 1944, and celebrated silver, golden and diamond jubi-lees in 1966, 1991, and 2001. Early in her religious life Sr. Regis taught elementary school for two years at Villa Madonna Academy and St. Henry. The Bene-dictine community had moved into health care during this time. Sr. Regis then trained in x-ray and medical technology. At St. Elizabeth Hospital she was the first med tech to graduate. With few interruptions Sr. Regis served over thirty years at Santa Fe Hospital, LaJunta CO; St. Joseph Hospital, Florence, CO; and Estill County/Marcum Wallace Hospital in Irvine, KY. In 1982 Sr. Regis met Sr. Catherine Hurley, a Servite sister, working at the Appalachian Servite Mission in Harlan, KY. Other Benedictines were working in the area so Sr. Regis joinedSr. Catherine in serving the Appalachian poor. Serving the needy in every way, living among the people and giving of herself became the work closest to her heart. During a visit to Harlan in 2004 Sr. Regis had a bad fall and in time moved to the infirmary. This past year she slowly weakened. Death came peacefully on April 16, 2012. Sr. Regis is sur-vived by three sisters: Gladys Garlitz, Regina Imbruglia, Rose Ann Young and a brother, R. Daniel Egger, as well as by many nieces and nephews and the Benedictine community. Her funeral took place on Monday, April 23, 2012 followed by burial at St. Walburg Mon-astery.

In the evening members of the community served in various capacities at Villa-Rama, the annual fund raiser for Villa Madonna Academy.Mar. 2—Sirens in the surrounding areas signaled approaching storms and radios advised immediate shelter. It was mid-afternoon and the community gathered in various safe places listening to ac-counts of approaching tornadoes threat-ening nearby towns—Piner, Crittenden, Peach Grove, Morning View—familiar names not usually in the news. The warning was lifted shortly before 5 pm when we assembled for Evening Prayer. Banner headlines the next morning told of terrible devastation suffered in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, areas very close to us. In days following, members of the community helped where pos-sible, cleaning up, donating food or clothing for the tornado victims.Mar. 6—A large and responsive audi-ence was present in the chapel for the first of two Lenten lectures, Weeping over Jerusalem given by Dr. Walter Brueggemann, a noted author and scholar of Old Testament theology. On July 2, 2012, Anne M. Maxfield, VMA ’79 began her du-ties as the new president/CEO for her Alma Mater Villa Madonna Academy. Anne, the former Vice President/CEO for Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, worked for 26 years in nonprofits and companies in the private sector. J. David Bender, 2011-12 Chair of the VMA Board, stated “Ms. Maxfield will provide lead-ership and strategic management for all areas of the academy, with an emphasis on developing diverse, sustainable revenue streams. In addition, Anne will perpetuate a high-performing culture that includes a robust athletic program, continued success in academics, as well as making sound business decisions that advance the academy’s impor-tant mission.” Anne’s whole family has been a part of Villa Madonna Acad-emy and friends of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery. Serving the Academy and helping the Benedictine Sisters is a family tradition. Of her new position Anne says the following: Every morning I park my car facing the monastery and experience a sense of peace. This feeling continues with me as I walk down the manicured pathway and take in the verdant landscape and finally enter the academy. Since 1940, a member of my family has graced the halls, checked out li-brary books, and stood on the grounds over-looking the Ohio River for yearbook pic-tures. Yes, three generations of my family received a stellar education at Villa Madonna Academy (VMA). Seventy-two years later, I am providing visionary leadership ("Benedictine style") for 500 students, along with very talented faculty/staff. How blessed am I? My love and respect for the sisters at St. Walburg Monastery began as a young child when my late mother would share stories of her relation-ship with Sr. Marcella [Fedders], who taught her piano as a young girl in the 1930's. Once my parents married and began having a family, my father was integrated into the monastery's volunteer structure by Sr. Bene-dict Bunning, who relied on him for a variety of initiatives. Both of my parents instilled in my siblings and me the Benedictine values. While they never said "you will live by the Benedictine values" -- they didn't have to -- they demonstrated it -- we lived it. It is a thrill for me to come "full-circle." As I reflect on my own education, it occurs to my that my first educators were Benedictine sisters -- Sr. Jean Scott, Sr. Rosemary McCormack and the late Sr. Lois Krouse. Here I am 45 years later working with the Benedictine sisters and their sponsoring school, VMA, as I endeavor to fulfill an important mission: educate students in grades K – 12 for full Christian participation in 21st century life - forming students who seek God in the Benedictine traditions of reverence and peace, scholarship, service and community. The Benedictine Sisters are grateful that Anne has come back to Villa Madonna Academy and look forward to working with her as we plan for the future of Villa Madonna Academy.

A long shot, I’ll Have Another, was the first horse ever to win from No. 19 post. The jockey was a first time rider in the Derby, and the trainer and owner were also first timers. It was amazing to see the sud-den dash of the winner at the very end of the race. May 19--We assembled in the front entry to begin Evening Prayer I for the Feast of the Ascension and to formally welcome Janice Merkle as a resident of St. Walburg Monastery. A large contingent of Benedictines enjoyed the festivities as well as meeting many friends.

These chronicles could not conclude without mention of the weather. A warm and dry spring followed by unusually high temperatures in June and July increased our appreciation of the air conditioning. Temperatures frequently rose into three digits and predicted rains, most of the time, seemed to go in other directions. What will the rest of summer bring?

The Chronicles continued On the Grounds This spring St. Mary’s House, the oldest house on St. Walburg Monastery proper-ty, received a fresh coat of paint. Pro-fessional painters needed almost two weeks to complete the task in very hot weather. The bright white paint gives a new look to the house.

Roberto Fernandez, one of our groundskeep-ers, cleared away dead and dying growth around the St. Theresa garden between the monastery and Cottage 8. He also re-enforced the stone-work and planted new rose bushes. We hope the roses can survive the summer.

This spring seemed to be an unusually intense mating season for the wild turkeys on the property. Three young toms (pic-tured below) roamed all over trying to impress the hens and strutting their stuff. Sr. Deborah called them Tom, Dick and Harry while Sr. Aileen named them the Three Amigos. The heat wave seems to have closed down the fashion show.

Coming in November Since December 2011 Sr. Deborah Harmeling and Deborah Kohl Kremer have been working to find pictures and text for The Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery. The book will be part of Arcadia Publishing Company’s Images of America series. Arcadia publishes “general visual histories intended to tell in broad strokes the story of the title community from its earliest days. … The pictures and text should bring to life a wide variety of topics within the main subject and should showcase vintage views of and special moments from your history.” Other general Arcadia guidelines call for no fewer than 180 images and no more than 240 images in total and a completed layout of 127 pages. Images will be in black and white and only a small percentage of pictures can date after 1983. Using these criteria, the authors are happy with the images featured in the book. There will be seven chapters entitled Begin-nings in Covington, Expanding to the Country, Community Educational Ministries, Commu-nity Healthcare Ministries, Other Ministries, Faces of St. Walburg Monastery, Community Life and Prayer. The book will be published on No-vember 26, just in time for Christmas presents, and the retail price will be $21.99. The Benedictine Sisters will sell prepaid orders for $17.00 and orders after November 26 for $20.00. We ask that those who order from the

Benedictine Sisters pick up their copies at the front entry of the monastery. We really do not want to go into shipping and handling expenses. If you are not in the local area, we suggest that you pre-order from Amazon.com or Arcadia Publishing Company at http://www.arcadiapublishing.com. We will receive royalties from all books purchased from Amazon, Arcadia or other bookstores. After November 26, we will be sell these books from the monastery and at all functions held here. To pre-order, send a check payable to St. Wal-burg Monastery for $17.00 per copy to Sr. Deborah Harmeling, St. Walburg Monastery, 2500 Amster-dam Rd., Villa Hills, KY 41017. If you have any

questions, please call Sr. Deborah at 859-331-6771 or email her at [email protected]. The authors will also schedule some local book signings. The cover photo on p.1 shows the Holy Cross High School Faculty of 1947 (l to r) Srs. Judith Hock, Alice (Avila) McAvoy, Frances Jacobs, Julitta Ege, Frances Jacobs, Mildred Obermeier and Euphrasia Von Hoene. The top picture on this page was a cover contender but was not crisp enough. It features (l to r) Srs. Mary Anne Wolking, Regis Egger, Joyce Quinlan, Perpetua Booth, Assunta Hessling, Frances Jacobs Teresa Wolking, Judith Hock and Bertilla (Mary Margaret) Bell. The bottom picture which is also in the book is a gathering of (l to r) Srs. Agnes Ruschmann, Nancy Kordenbrock, Immaculata Campbell, Esther O’Hara, Pauline Rice, Mary Anne Wolking and Martha Feder.
