Metropolis is located just off I‐24 in the southern tip of Illinois.    With Superman as the city’s favorite son… and the Ohio River at our doorstep… there are many one‐of‐a‐kind and historical attractions to see!   

Attractions  

Superman Statue The famous 15‐foot, (4000 pounds of metal muscle) bronze figure stands guard over the business district of Metropolis.  Citizens raised over $125,000 for this statue that replaced the original statue in 1993.  Every day, visitors stop to stand along side the Man of Steel for a keepsake photo.   Plans are being made for a Lois Lane Statue.                 A world record was set in 2008 for the most people gathered together dressed as Superman.  

 

 The Super Museum  The Super Museum houses a $2.5 million collection of all that is Superman.  Interesting and unique items relating to the world’s most famous superhero can be found in every nook and cranny.  Here you will see Superman costumes and capes worn by many of the actors to portray the Man of Steel as well as thousands of other Superman items.  The Super Museum and gift shop are open seven days a week from 9 a.m.‐5 p.m.  $5 admission gets visitors inside both this museum and the Americana Hollywood Museum.   

 

Other Superman sites of interest What’s green, comes from outer space and is dangerous to Superman?  Kryptonite.  A large kryptonite meteorite is located on the corner of Third and Ferry streets in front of the Americana Hollywood Museum.    And ‐ hardly a day goes 

by in Metropolis when someone doesn’t have their picture made behind a cut‐out of Superman or Lois Lane.  They can be found at several businesses around town.  Just strike a pose and say cheese!  The local newspaper is called The Metropolis Planet and is located at 109 E. Fifth St.  The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce is a favorite 

stop for visitors to Metropolis.  There you will see photos of the days when Metropolis first became the “official hometown of Superman.”  The Chamber also offers lots of Superman apparel and souvenirs.                                                                                                                                                                                                       President Obama strikes a pose with the Man of Steel. 

Fort Massac State Park Fort Massac State Park is the oldest state park in Illinois.  In fact the park just celebrated its 100th birthday on Nov. 1, 2008. The fort was used in 1757 during the French anIndian War and served as a Customs Office fro1799‐1807.  It was dismantled in 1814 and reconstructed in 1971‐73 as a museum containing the fort’s history and renovated again in 2002.    A stof George Rogers Clarklooks out over the Ohio River and the park’s

Harrah’s Metropolis Casino & Hotel At Harrah’s Metropolis Casino, we’ve taken entertainment to a whole new level.  Enjoy many state‐of‐the‐art games in our luxurious casino, including over 1,100 slots and 25 exciting table games.  And, while you’re here, experience fine dining in our four restaurants.  The Range Steakhouse offers a tantalizing selection of premium steaks, succulent seafood and savory chicken. Fresh buffet features a large variety of salads, American, Asian and Italian selections as well as decadent desserts.  Ace’s dinner features 50’s style food and fun while The Rivercrest serves up breakfast favorites inside the hotel complex.  Harrah’s Metropolis Casino’s new  258‐room hotel contains a 12,000 square foot multi‐purpose event center that seats 1200 concert style and up to 800 banquet style. The casino is opens at 9 a.m. seven days a week.

Metropolis Murals A series of six murals are painted on buildings along Ferry Street and Market Street in Metropolis.  Each mural reveals a different story and makes the town’s heritage come alive through artistic renderings of local historical events.  Interpretive plaques describe the historical significance of each.   

Americana Hollywood Museum Third & Ferry streets An amazing tribute to America’s most famous Hollywood icons features life‐size figures, wardrobes, costumes, movie props, posters, dolls, and rare celebrity collectibles from around the world.  The museum features special areas devoted to Elvis, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Hendrix, Harry Houdini and many more.  Americana also houses a gift shop filled with many collectible items.  The museum is open seven days a week from 9 a.m.‐6 p.m. $5 Admission fee covers both this museum and the Super Museum. 

 Elijah P. Curtis Home Museum 405 Market St. The Curtis Home, operated now as a museum, was built in 1879 when Major Elijah P. Curtis returned to Metropolis from the Civil War.  The woodwork and other features of the home are very unusual.  From April‐October, the Curtis Home is open from 2‐4 p.m. on Sunday.  The home is also shown by appointment year‐round to groups of any size.  No admission is charged, but donations are welcome.  

Birdman of Alcatraz burial site Robert F. Stroud, better known as the Birdman of Alcatraz, is buried in a simple grave site in the Masonic Cemetery.  

Kincaid Mounds Just a short drive from Metropolis visitors can view Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site.  The site is a nationally significant Native‐American archaeological treasure.  From 800AD to 1500AD it was the “capital” of a chiefdom that stretched from Brookport to Hamletsburg along the Ohio River. Large flat‐topped mounds were erected on which the houses and temples of civil and religious elite stood.  Today the mounds still exist and a constructed overlook platform and interpretive panels tell the story of the significant contribution and historical value of the Native American culture.

Recreation & Leisure 

There are plenty of spots to enjoy a bit of leisure time in Metropolis.   Dorothy Miller Park, at right, offers a beautiful view of the Ohio River.  Sportsmen will love the fishing opportunities available in the river and at other surrounding lakes in the area.  Mermet Lake Conservation Area is located just outside of Metropolis on U.S. 45.  The shallow 450 acre lake provides excellent fishing and duck hunting.  Mermet Springs is 8 ½ acres of water in an abandoned stone quarry that is 120 feet deep.  Recreational scuba diving, diving lessons and equipment rental is available. 

  Metropolis has become well known for its personal service provided by its business owners.  You can visit specialty shops along the main highway into town, on Market St. and in other areas of the city. Metropolis offers over 30 restaurants to choose from.  From premium steaks and Chinese fare to Mexican flavors and fast food favorites, you find something that to tempt your palate.    

 Festivals and Events Metropolis is home to some of the most popular festivals in the region.  People from all over the world converge on Metropolis the second weekend of June each year for the annual Superman Celebration.  Later in June, professional and amateur archers come to Metropolis for the ASA Archery Tournament.  Spectators enjoy it, too.  The second weekend in Sept. is the Super City‐Quilt City Connection, a celebration of arts between two cities.  Then in October, visitors enjoy barbecue and music at Super City Blues and Ques the second weekend of October.  The third weekend of October brings the largest crowds of the year as the annual Fort Massac Encampment brings history to life in Illinois oldest state park.  Over 162,000 visitors attended in 2008.  

Location Metropolis is the ideal spot to make your home base while visiting surrounding sites in Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky.  Two popular Wine Trails are close by in Illinois and the National Quilt Museum and historical Downtown Paducah, Ky. is just 15 minutes away.
