WelcomeThe Sixth Annual International Business

Summit (IBS) is under the auspices of the Tampa Bay

International Business Council (TBIBC). The TBIBC, known

earlier in its time as the Tampa Bay International Trade

Council, is an organization with over 50 years of interna-

tional activity. It has evolved into an umbrella

organization for the eleven bi-national chambers of

commerce that make up our community of interests.

We believe that you will greatly enjoy this year’s program with our newly con-

fi gured entrepreneurial panel, one excellent plenary speaker, the ever popular

speed-networking as well as three quality break-out sessions.

Our goal is the further internationalization of the Tampa Bay region. Ours is a

grass roots organization and we strive to create collaboration, prosperity and

diversity as this is the way for international business to fl ourish in our region.

We thank you for your participation.

TBIBC Mission: To foster international trade and business and put Tampa Bay on the map, through diversity, collaboration and innovation, based on our unique membership of bi-national chambers and international businesses and communities.

IBS is about networking: It connects people with new contacts, and builds relationships and trust. Our structured speed-networking is particularly popular.

IBS is about visibility: Sponsors and networkers come to IBS to defi ne their brands, promote products and services to potential clients. IBS off ers a specifi c opportunity for sales and marketing to the diverse, international and multi-lingual community. The theme “Collaboration, Diversity, Prosperity” Awards highlight achievements by innovative and inclusive companies in our region.

IBS is about resources for prosperity: The Summit showcases support services for business and skills development, international business incentives, supply-chain development, people and training. These resources benefi t large, small and international businesses.

IBS is about meeting the bi-national community: Support for IBS establishes a long-term portal to the bi-national community leadership and membership and to potential global intermediaries, partners and cultural mentors.

IBS is about collaboration: The event brings together people who want to share new thinking, ideas and opportunities. There is an emphasis on diversity as a source of innovation, and on placing innovative thinkers together to collaborate for business development.

IBS is about diversity: It showcases the diversity of the Tampa Bay area and recognizes those who value diff erentness as a source of growth, prosperity and innovation. It celebrates cultural fl uency as a key skill-set in a global economy, and acknowledges commitment to diff erentness as a best practice value in organizations.

IBS is about education and entertainment: While some conferences are “same old, same old’, IBSis a fast-paced, varied range of options, where business owners, executives, purchasing managers and their staff can learn a wide range of skills on the track of their choice, while mixing with interesting and multi-cultural thinkers.

Diversity and Inclusion at Tech Data

As a leading technology and global computer distribution company, with over $25-billion dollars in revenue, ranked Fortune 109, Tech Data understands the critical value of understanding its global customer base and how valuable it is to meet and exceed customer expectations. Led by a mission statement “To be the IT distributor of choice for our customer and vendor partners, thus enabling our shareholders to prosper” Tech Data is constantly seeking ways to broaden understanding of the culture and values of its customer base.

Tech Data embarked on a mission to create a formalized Diversity and Inclusion strategy in the last quarter of 2009, initiated by the leadership of Pete Peterson, SVP Sales, who is the current executive sponsor and visionary of the strategy. The grass roots eff orts began with the selection of a Diversity Council of 30 cross-functional and multiple levels of Tech Data employees and managers who created the initial strategy. This was followed by the selection of divisional Change Champions, representing each division of the organization at corporate as well as in the Logistics division to execute the strategic goals. While still in the building phase, to date, Tech Data has primarily worked on phase one of the strategies, establishing external partnerships which both build brand recognition and allows Tech Data to invest in communities and initiatives to broaden awareness of various cultures and events linking to our diverse population.

Another area of focus and success has been increasing summer internship to students, off ering the opportunity for diverse students to be exposed to a Fortune 109 technology company and get paid to learn about the various careers arranging from sales, after sales management, marketing, fi nance, accounting, human resources, informa-tion technology, legal, and logistics with dedicated internships off ering the ability for cross-functional project assignments. Recently we have enhanced our long partnership with INROADS, to include expansion of our sourcing through UNCF and targeted eff orts to recruit and build relationships through HBCUs for internships and careers.

The most recent initiatives have been centered on building a strategy for Supplier Diversity, working with the FMSDC (Florida Minority Supplier Diversity Council) to engage with MBE/W for opportunities where we have the ability and opportunity to invite a more diversifi ed group of service providers to the table for some bids through our procurement division. Currently in the works is gaining a broader understanding of the opportunities directly with our customer and vendor partners. We are looking at ways to become better at doing what is best to increase our understanding of service to our diverse resellers and vendor partners.

Last year we proudly introduced a Woman in the Channel luncheon at our largest customer and vendor facing event (held twice annually on east and west coast) with great success. The event features women in leadership or ownership of organizations that do business with Tech Data and off ers unique opportunities to hear the story of career path and obstacles toward success. Based on the standing room only participation, we have embarked to continue this at each of our future Channel Link events. We launched our inaugural Women in Leadership event at our corporate location this year in March, featuring Women in Leadership, representing a diverse set of leaders across various industries.

We look forward to continued growth of Tech Data’s Diversity and Inclusion initiatives and have committed to its success going forward.

Uday LeeCreator of new wealth, business expert

• Multi-Industry • International

Innovative, driven and self-made describes Uday Lee. He has created suc-

cessful businesses in eight industries and on 4 continents – every one as a

start-up.

HIS PHILOSOPHY: To create products or services distinctly unique from

anything out there in the market place and which are perceived to be

distinctly unique by the customer. This unique product or service tran-

scends from being a want to a need or perceived need by humanity, leading to an improvement

in the quality of life resulting in very profi table enterprise and the creation of new wealth!

Background: “I have been an entrepreneur and creator of new wealth all my life.” Graduating with

distinction and honors from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Chemistry and Physics, Uday

came home to his father who was in the hospital, the family steel mill in bankruptcy and the Union on

strike. At age 18, Uday stepped in. In order to save the business, he needed to deal with the suppliers,

customers and the union. Faking bravado and age beyond his years, he negotiated extended terms

with vendors, cash discounts for early customers’ payments and a deal with the union. In 6 months the

mill was stable and Uday handed it back over to his father and went to continue his education at his

father’s insistence.

In 1976, he graduated from the University of Bombay. His parents wanted him to continue his formal

education, but Uday was ready to tackle the world. With $20 dollars, Uday began U-Sales and Aida

Chemicals, Inc. Realizing it was impossible to compete with the “Big Boys” in the chemical commod-

ity market, he focused on innovation and branding. At the age of 24, he off ered 24 hour delivery and

just-in-time supplies to his customers. The company slogan was “We deliver on time” closed deals. His

accomplishment was monumental. He grew the business to $54 million in seven years and achieved

the distinction of being the youngest CEO on the Bombay stock exchange at age 32 and the stock is-

sue oversold 40 times. Further leveraging his education in Chemistry, Uday moved into the Pharma-

ceutical Industry. Again, innovation was his target. Here he developed India’s fi rst over the counter

women’s contraceptive, Today. To this day it is the best selling OTC contraceptive for women in India.

Moving to the United States in 1990, he went into confectionery. Keeping to his vision, he was the fi rst

to add fruit juice to sugar confection inventing the Juicee Gummy. He developed creative packaging

and a pre-packaged, 360 degree display unit creating a new standard for packaging. His products were

sold in all 50 states to retailers including Dollar General, K-Mart, Target, Eckerd,

Rite-aid, Walmart, 7-11, Dollar Tree, Safeway, Albertsons, and more. His candy company was one of the

fastest growing and most successful in the United States for 2 decades.

While still in the candy businesses, Uday started in Real Estate Development. Applying his vision, he

created a hybrid between luxury, single family homes and condos by off ereing 10 ft. ceilings, direct

elevators to their home and with minimal shared walls. Uday directed sales of over $30 million in the

fi rst 2 years by providing direction and leadership on lunch breaks and weekends. He now has $150

million worht of projects in the pipeline in Real Estate and Hospitality.
