Efficient small milling machine for standard applications

Cold milling machine W 50

The economically efficient alternativefor countless small milling jobs

The W 50 is the perfect intermediate-size machine

between the tried-and-tested small milling machine

models W 35 DC and W 50 DC, and fully meets the require-

ments of standard users. Whether milling on small to medium-

sized roads, carrying out small repairs or milling tie-ins,

milling around manhole covers or removing asphalt strips:

The W 50 performs all the jobs that are typical of a small

milling machine with tremendous economic efficiency. Ease

of operation, low fuel consumption and the machine’s solid

design do their bit to guarantee surprisingly low operating

costs. It goes without saying that many different customer

expectations are also taken into account, for the W 50’s

equipment concept offers a tremendous variety of individual

options.

Efficiency is the W 50’s hallmark

2 // 3

The W 50’s intuitive control interface and ergonomically

optimized operator’s platform considerably increase

comfort for the machine operator.

Highly precise milling results of top quality can be

achieved with the optional LEVEL PRO levelling system,

which has been specially developed for use in milling

machines.

Additional options, such as different conveyor choices,

canopy, three-wheel or four-wheel design, or FCS

extend the range of applications and ease of operation.

The W 50’s compact design guarantees ease of

transport, exceptional manoeuvrability, and good

overall view.

The W 50 is distinctive for its tried-and-tested equipment featuresand extremely easy handling

In accordance with thecustomer’s specification:machine without loadingconveyor

Large surfaces are no problem for small machines

A class of its own in practical operation

The W 50 impresses not only when swiftly removing

surface courses at depths of up to 4 cm. It cuts a fine

figure also when milling off several layers or even entire

asphalt packages at depths of up to 16 cm. The perform-

ance diagram is proof that the small milling machine is

capable of achieving high daily production rates.

The schematic diagram on the opposite page can be used

for a rough calculation of the practical milling performance

to be expected. An allowance factor takes account of influ-

encing factors that may reduce the performance, such as

hindrances to the work resulting from traffic, waiting times

for trucks, non-contiguous milling areas or road fixtures.

4 // 5

The modern engine and direct mechanical milling drum

drive guarantee full performance up to a milling depth

of 160 mm.

The allowance factor is between 0.7 for free sections

of road and 0.3 for heavy urban traffic.

The machine's powerful, flexible conveyor system can

be depended on to preclude performance losses during

loading of the milled material.

Wirtgen has been the leader in cutting technology for

many years, guaranteeing high-quality milling results.

An optimized arrangement of the toolholders on the milling

drum and clever tooling of the drum edges ensure a clean

milling texture and quiet operation of the machine. The

milling drum is fitted with welded toolholders and works

against the direction of travel in an effectively sealed milling

chamber. Clean loading of the milled material is ensured

by the hydraulically height-adjustable scraper blade:

Depending on its position, all or just part of the milled

material is loaded on trucks, while the remainder is left in

the milled cut.

Making child’s play of work on the job site

FCS makes the W 50 an all-rounder on the job site

The small milling machine W 50 is fully equipped

for meeting the daily challenges on the job site.

A mechanically driven milling drum guarantees maximum

efficiency and top performance. The power belts of the

milling drum drive ensure optimum transmission of power,

while successfully absorbing peak loads. The optional FCS

offers an even larger range of applications – the patented

quick-change system for milling drums turns the W 50 into

an all-rounder, guaranteeing full utilization of the small milling

machine at all times. The system enables the W 50 to be

fitted with milling drums of different working widths and tool

spacings easily and in an extremely short period of time.

The machine’s electrically operated water spray

system reduces cutting tool wear and tear, as well as

the development of dust during the milling operation.

The nozzles of the water spray system can be

removed and cleaned in no time at all.

The side plates on both sides of the milling drum can

be raised, preventing them from digging into unpaved

shoulders.

Special milling drums for different applications are

available upon request.

Fast and flexible loading of material

Economically efficient material loading is most important

Reliable loading of the milled material is of crucial

importance when it comes to ensuring the smooth

completion of a milling site. That’s where our W 50 makes

a strong showing. Customers can choose from as many as

four different loading conveyor options. Whether the milled

material is loaded on trucks or into the bucket of a wheel

loader, deposited as a windrow next to the machine, or left

in the milled cut – efficient removal is guaranteed at all

times. The conveyor belts are fitted with robust, sturdy cleats

to ensure powerful transport of the milled material. All con-

veyors are adjustable in height and can be slewed to either

side. The conveyor belt speed is continuously adjustable to

enable even large trucks to be filled right to the top.

The loading conveyor can be adjusted in height …

… and slewed by 25° to the left and 20° to the right, permitting

loading to be effected to the side

10 // 11

The W 50 is available with the following conveyor

options: without conveyor, with one-stage short conveyor,

one-stage long conveyor, or long folding conveyor.

The optionally available folding conveyor shortens the

transport length by approx. 2 m, enabling the small

milling machine to be transported on smaller trailers.

A special coupling device enables the loading conveyor

to be attached or removed in a few swift moves by one

person only.

The conveyor’s hydraulic power take-off can optionally

be used for ancillary equipment like, for instance,

a hydraulic hammer.

The short conveyor permits loading into the bucket of a wheelloader or onto a mini dumper

The W 50 leaves the milledmaterial in the cut when working

without loading conveyor

Effective milling when space is limited

Unmatched in terms of manoeuvrability

A compact, manoeuvrable cold milling machine on

three (optionally four) individually driven wheels – that’s

the W 50 from Wirtgen. The machine’s superior manoeuvra-

bility in space-restricted conditions enables many jobs on

a milling site to be completed with much more ease and

speed. An extremely large locking angle of the front axle is

part and parcel of the entirely coherent machine concept,

enabling extremely tight milling radii when milling around

manhole covers or gas valves. The rear right support wheel

can additionally be folded in or out quickly to improve the

machine’s side clearance. This practical feature permits

highly precise milling along obstacles like, for instance, walls

or traffic islands.

The W 50 can turn nearly on thespot when the front wheel issteered to maximum lock

Four instead of three wheels for even better traction

A steering angle indicator on theengine cowling shows the position ofthe front wheel (3-wheeled model only)

12 // 13

Manoeuvrability offers significant time

advantages

The W 50’s hydraulic, finger-light steering supports the

machine operator when working in narrow sections.

A hydraulic flow divider acts as differential lock,

guaranteeing permanent and uniform traction all the

time regardless of ground conditions.

The travel speed can be infinitely varied from zero to

maximum speed in both milling gears and in travel gear.

The machine’s large ground clearance protects the

lower part of the chassis from being damaged by, for

instance, high kerbstones.

Permanent all-wheel drive withengageable differential lock is astandard feature

The W 50 is capable of milling flushto kerb with the support wheel

folded in front of the drum

Ergonomics and operator comfort

Ergonomics boost performance! For precisely that

reason, the development of the W 50 has produced

a role model of user-friendliness and maximum customer

benefit. The control elements are arranged clearly, within

easy reach and within the operator’s immediate field of

vision. The optional driver’s seat, which can be moved

beyond the right edge of the machine, and comfortable

working in both standing and sitting positions ensure an

excellent view of the milling edge and the working environ-

ment. It goes without saying that the steering wheel can be

tilted to adapt to each operator’s personal preferences.

Altogether, the intelligent workplace design prevents fatigue

and ensures relaxed working for extended periods of time.

14 // 15

The machine operator has a full view of the milling edge,

which guarantees maximum safety.

The spring-mounted driver’s seat can be adjusted in the

direction of travel, in height and lengthwise, offering a

maximum degree of individual comfort.

A multi-functional display at the control panel keeps the

operator informed of all relevant operating states.

The W 50’s main functions are easily operated via the

control elements integrated in the right-hand armrest.

Full control of milling depth and slope

A unique feature in this machine class, the innovative

LEVEL PRO automatic levelling system (optional) en-

ables the performance capacity of small milling machines to

be increased even further. Wire-rope and cross slope sen-

sors integrated in the LEVEL PRO levelling system ensure

precise, automatic control of milling depth and slope. The

user-friendly LEVEL PRO control panel is arranged on the

operator’s platform and within the machine driver’s immedi-

ate field of vision. Its clearly structured, intuitive design

makes operation of the W 50 simple and significantly

increases operator comfort. Target and actual values of the

milling depths left and right are displayed on easy-to-read

milling depth indicators all the time. Target values are easily

pre-programmed, saved and called up as required.

An ingenious maintenance conceptpays for itself daily

Little effort is needed to keep the W 50 in top shape

The W 50 impresses with a simple maintenance con-

cept. The small amount of maintenance work has been

reduced to a small number of individual inspection points.

Wide opening doors on both sides enable maintenance to

be carried out quickly and easily from the ground. Engine,

service points and filters are all located within easy reach.

Water or fuel are refilled just as quickly via the easily acces-

sible filling ports. The surprisingly simple maintenance

concept will ultimately give the machine user a lucrative

lead, allowing rapid completion of the construction work.

18 // 19

All maintenance points are within easy reach thanks

to the wide opening engine cowling.

A comprehensive tool kit is part of the standard

scope of delivery.

The W 50 is equipped with a spacious, lockable

storage compartment for tool containers or tools.

Working under controlled conditionsday and night

Effective lighting system ensures safe operation

An excellent range of vision by day and night, as well

as controlled working even in difficult conditions – the

W 50 is a role model when it comes to meeting these vital

criteria. The advantages are obvious: In addition to ensuring

the safety of the machine driver and producing a clean work

result, undisturbed working at night also increases the

machine’s overall utilization. Optimum illumination is ensured

by two headlights at the front, as well as several additional

lamps that can be attached in any position on the machine.

The safety package is completed by quickly accessible

emergency stop buttons, exterior mirrors, a clearly audible

reversing horn and illuminated control panel.

Safe and fast loading permits the cold milling machine

to be transported to the next job location as quickly as

possible.

The W 50 has the ideal size not only for low-loaders but

also for small, low-cost trailers.

The optional canopy can be folded down conveniently

via gas-filled springs to save space during transport.

Wirtgen’s product portfolio offers made-to-measure

trailers for transport of the W 50.

Milling along road fixtures is no problem at all

A normal working day for the W 50 can sometimes be

quite multi-faceted: In the morning, a trailer transports

the machine to the job site, where it is quickly unloaded.

Work commences immediately, consisting of the many jobs

that are typical of a small milling machine: On this day, the

W 50 will carry out work that the large milling machine

working on the same job is not capable of performing.

The pavement around some manhole covers needs to be

milled off first, followed by pavement strips in difficult bends.

At around lunchtime, the rear right wheel is folded in without

further ado to mill off any remaining pavement strips flush to

kerb. Just before the working day ends, the W 50 quickly

mills two wedge-shaped tie-ins. That’s it for today! All that

remains to be done is load the machine because the next

job site is waiting on the next day.

22 // 23

On milling sites, the W 50 is an ideal companion of large

milling machines which are responsible for milling off the

large surfaces.

A broad variety of special milling drums are available,

including a slot cutting ring for cutting butt joints, or a

milling drum for producing water gutters.

The compact small milling machine’s exceptional

manoeuvrability makes it the ideal candidate in particular

for jobs in space-restricted conditions.

Three different loading conveyor options broaden the

machine’s spectrum of applications, while ensuring

optimum completion of jobs at the same time.

Milling larger surfaces is no problem at all for the W 50
