Since the Christmas break time has just flown by and we

find ourselves in March already. Having said this from a

results point of view the last couple of months have

certainly been interesting and have found the Men’s first

team 2nd in their league with a game in hand, the ladies 1st

XI sitting mid-table, the men’s 2nd’s mid table following 5

consecutive wins and the ladies 2nd XI also sitting in the

middle of their respective table following some promising

results during the second half of the season!

As we continue our 2014/15 campaign it is time to show

the rest of the county why…

“Three is the Magic Number!”

Three has certainly been “The Magic Number” so far for Cobdown in 2015.

• Three exciting months • Three different matches • Three different players • Three awesome Hat-Tricks.

Kerry Fowler started proceedings back in January with 4 goals against Welcome in the ladies 1st XI 4-2 victory at Hoo. This was the second time in a month that Kerry had put 4 passed the opposition having done the same during a 7-2 victory in a friendly over Blackheath immediately after the Christmas break.

Men’s 1st XI (Left Midfield Maestro) Rob Bryer soon joined in the fun by netting a hat-trick (for those of you who hadn’t heard already) on 28th Feb during the Men’s 1st XI 5-0 victory over local rivals Gillingham Anchorians.

Finally it was returning player Kirsty Wood who joined the elite group by netting 3 of the 5 goals in a 5-0 win for the ladies 2nd XI against Dartford last weekend.

Congratulations to all 3 players on achieving these feats and congratulations to all teams for their recent successes in the league.

All I can say is - Top goal scorer is certainly going to be interesting at the dinner and dance this year. J

UNDER STARTERS ORDERS…

Friday 27th March 2015 will see the second of our fund raising events of the 2014 / 15 season. First race is set to start at 19:30 in the Cedar Suite (where the annual dinner is held) of Cobdown Sports Club. If you have not already purchased a horse there is still time to do so if you wish, contact your captain for further details!! Alternatively just come along on the night with your little pot of change and join in the fun of the races. – Full details available from your captain or the fundraising committee.

Great day out at Wembley for Indoor Fives!

Sunday 25th January saw some 22 members of the club travel to Wembley Arena for the annual Maxi-Nutrition Indoor 5’s Hockey Finals.

The day started off with the first of the Men’s Semi-Final matches where East Grinstead took on Reading, from the off this was going to be end to end with excitement and it certainly didn’t disappoint. East Grinstead eventually went onto the final knocking Reading out 7-5

The second game of the day could be argued as the best game of the day, Kent Rivals, Canterbury and Sevenoaks were to meet. The Cobdown camp was split with half staying local with Sevenoaks and the remainder fancying Caterbury. It could have gone either way but it was Caterbury who scored the winner with just ONE second left on the clock to put them into the final against East Grinstead.

Following a bit of lunch it was the time for the ladies final. This was another game promising to be a thriller with several England and GB players on the pitch, however it was a slightly one way affair with Bowden beating East Grinstead convincingly 4-1 to take the title and put their demons of 2014 behind them where they had been denied the title.

The final bit of hockey of the day was the return of East Grinstead and Canterbury for the Men’s Final, the game started tight with end to end battles before a quick-fire hat-rick from Chris Griffiths put East Grinstead well on their way to another win. Canterbury had other thoughts and pulled their keeper to give an additional on field player with a staggering 14 minutes still on the clock. This proved beneficial though as they failed to concede any more goals and pulled one goal at a time. However, time ran out and East Grinstead held onto their lead to win 6-5 and claim a record 7th consecutive Indoor Finals Title.

Since playing hockey the club has had 3 different names: - Aylesford Paper Mill Hockey Club, Reed Hockey Club and Cobdown Hockey Club. What next one might ask? Your starter for 10!! What year was this photo of APM Ladies Hockey Team taken?

This was in the days when you might have to herd sheep off the pitch before being able to play. Although I can remember one such incident at Smarden. Recently I have been making contact with ex-players with a view to constructing a history of the Hockey Club (both Men’s + Ladies). If you have any family members/friends/neighbours who used to play hockey at the Mill/Club, please give me their contact details; - I would love to chat to them.
