Seasons Gree t ings

So where do we start… I have to admit if you had said to

me at the start of the season, following the promotion of

both 1st XI’s sides that we would be coming into the break

with both sitting comfortably in the middle of the table I

would have probably thought you were still a little “La-La”

from the end of season dinner. However, it is with great

pleasure that I can confirm this is very much the case!

What’s more the Ladies 2nd XI are also sitting comfortably

in their league and although at the lower end of the table

the Men’s 2nd XI have put in some great performances and

unfortunately been undone in the last couple of minutes on

several occasions by “Strong” opposition. (say no more)

Still despite this little frustration…

COBS ROCK!

“Cobdown Duo” take next steps in Junior Development Plan!

For those of you that read last month’s newsletter you will be aware that Brook Fowler and Ben Newmarch had both been successfully in gaining places on the first rung of the ladder at the Kent Junior Development Centre held up at Holcombe Hockey Club.

Following the completion of this course I am pleased to announce that both Brook and Ben have proved that they have what is required and have both been accepted to attend the Junior Academy Centre (JAC) Assessment Days for their age group.

The JAC is the next step on the “Hockey Development Pathway” and success at this level will mean that the players have been considered as one of the best in the county for their age group and will be part of the 20 man squad to represent Kent at their age.

Both players are currently playing for the Men’s 1stXI on a Saturday and feature regularly in the starting XI with Brook upfront having scored 5 already this season and Ben scoring 3 from his slightly deeper midfield position.

Once again we would like to wish both Ben and Brook all the best for the assessment days and we look forward to continuing to benefit from your skills throughout the remainder of the season.

Your starter for 10…

Prior to Saturday 25th November there had been some great claims of fantastic knowledge within the club. Who would have known we have a Scalextric Master, a Disney Whiz-Kid and an 80’s Music Maestro - and that’s only in the Men’s 2nds. However none of this was to pay, when the mighty “Hoof-Hearted” team made up from the Men’s 1st XI made a late comeback to win by ½ point in the last round! - (Even with a team member convinced that Louis Armstrong invented Penicillin & that foxes & bats could both turn their heads 270 degrees…) Many thanks go to Jerry and Sue for organising and running the night which in total made just over £330 for Cobdown Hockey Club!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT… Name: Andy Smith

Team: Men’s First Team

Position: Midfield Maestro

Ideal Dinner Guests: Christiano Ronaldo, Peter Kay &

David Beckham

Cobdown Ladies Train at Lee Valley Hockey Centre

On a glorious, if not early, Saturday morning in October Cobdown made the trip up to relish the delights of private tuition on the hallowed Lee Valley Astro, part of the Olympic legacy. Players from both teams travelled up to receive individual tuition from the England U21 coach as well as the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic coach. Focusing on the different teams wish lists, the coaches put the girls through their paces; providing a unique insight and new perspective on their game. The coaches instruction included formation, how to 'Capitalise on' and 'Quash' penalty corners and showed that by moving the ball and keeping their game fluid Cobdown can command their matches leading them to further wins as they continue their 2014 -15 campaign. The training ended with both teams putting practice into play as they closed with an inter-club scrimmage with all players taking part a great day, highly recommended and one Cobdown are eager to revisit in the near future as the coaches input was invaluable to the club's continued development.

Despite a slight blip the week following the coaching session itself, both teams are now back on track and have been putting in to practice the skills they learnt as they are both sitting mid-table in their respective leagues. Positions that both captains would have probably settled for at this point in the season had they been offered before the campaigns began.
