FACTS AND FIGURES OF THE GROUP PHASE

The EHF Media and Communications Department gives you all the stats: Which team had the best attack, which team conceded the least goals, who qualified for the first time, and much more. 16 teams, nine nations

• The teams in the last 16 stem from nine different nations: Germany is represented with four teams, Spain with three, Slovenia and Hungary with two teams each. Russia, Poland, FYR Macedonia, Denmark, and Belarus have one team left in the competition.

• Bjerringbro-Silkeborg and Dinamo Minsk are the two teams that qualified for the first time for the VELUX EHF Champions League knock-out phase.

• Four previous champions, with a combined tally of 14 from 19 possible final victories, have made it to the last 16: FC Barcelona (7 titles), THW Kiel (3), Atletico Madrid (3) and RK Celje Pivovarna Lasko (1).

• Nine teams which played the last 16 the previous season made it again to the knock-out phase: Füchse Berlin, HSV Hamburg, FC Barcelona Intersport, THW Kiel, Atletico Madrid, MKB Veszprem, Vive Targi Kielce, Metalurg Skopje and Ademar Leon.

• All finalists since the 2006/07 season are among the last 16 teams: THW Kiel (5 finals since 2007), Atletico Madrid (4, including the ones they reached when named Ciudad Real), FC Barcelona Intersport (2), SG Flensburg-Handewitt (1).

No one could beat Kielce

• Vive Targi Kielce are the second team since the change of the playing system in 2009 to win all ten matches in the group phase.

• Ciudad Real (now Atletico Madrid) were the first to achieve that feat in the 2009/10

season. Hardly anyone came past the Skopje defence

• As in the previous season, Metalurg Skopje sported the best defence of all 24 teams, conceding only 215 goals.

• Ranked behind the team from FYR Macedonia are the group winners MKB Veszprem

(242), Vive Targi Kielce (249) and FC Barcelona Intersport (252) – an indication that the defence becomes more and more important in order to achieve success.

THW Kiel were on fire

• Two of the main contenders for reaching the VELUX EHF FINAL 4 boasted the best attack: Defending champions, THW Kiel, had the best attacking players in their ranks, scoring 329 goals overall in ten matches. FC Barcelona Intersport follows suit with 321 goals.

• Veszprem (295 goals) are the only group winner to have scored less than 300 times, while Montpellier’s 301 goals were not enough to grant the French team a berth in the knock-out phase.

• Barcelona finished the group phase with a goal difference of +69, Kiel’s goal difference stands at +64. They are followed by Kielce and Metalurg (+56 goals each) and Veszprem (+53).

A closer look at the results

• Only seven of the 120 matches ended with a draw – and six of them occurred in the highly contested Group A.

• Matches involving Chekhovskie Medvedi ended in a draw on four different occasions.

The only draw not being a Group A result was the 27-all between Minsk and Zagreb in Group D.

• The overall statistics see 74 home victories, seven draws and 39 away victories after 120 matches.

CELJE PIVOVARNA LAŠKO vs HSV HAMBURG (Slovenia) (Germany)

1st leg: Saturday, 16 March, 16:30, Dvorana Zlatorog, Celje 2nd leg: Thursday, 21 March, 19:30, Sporthalle, Hamburg

Head-to-head stats: No previous matches in CL or EC

Qualification for last 16: fourth place in Group B Road to last 16: Directly after the group phase draw it seemed the team with the youngest age average of the competition hardly have any chance in the group with three giants – Kiel, Veszprém and Atlético Madrid. But in the race for fourth spot they not only recorded the crucial home victories against Constanta and Sävehof, but also added some unexpected points after a shocking victory over the defending champions from Kiel. Top scorers of group phase: Gašper Marguč 65, Borut Mačkovšek 42, Sebastian Skube 28 Injury report: Máté Lékai out for the rest of season with a broken finger on the right hand 3 March (Slovenian Cup final) Late entries after the group phase: Stefan Čavor (MNE) from BM Ciudad Encantada (ESP), 18-year-old, 198 cm, right back Current situation in the domestic league (as of 13 March 2013): 2nd place after the main round with 39 points out of 22 matches (19 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), three points behind the top ranked Gorenje Velenje, six points ahead of Koper in the race for the second berth in the CL 2013/14 Notes: … overall statistics of Celje against German teams in CL - 10 wins, two draws and 13 losses … winners of the 2003/2004 edition are among the best 16 teams for the eleventh time, but only for the first time since 2007 … won 17 national titles in 20 years history of the independent Slovenian league … former HSV player Roman Pungartnik will return in his new function as manager of Celje … with 22 years in average Celje have the youngest team in the competition.

Qualification for last 16: first place in Group A Road to last 16: After a shaky start to the competition, with a narrow win against Reale Ademar León and a draw at home against Chekovskie Medvedi, HSV recorded three successive victories to put them level on top of Group A. A defeat away to SG Flensburg-Handewitt was to be the only loss of the campaign, three wins and another draw in Chekhov followed as they narrowly came out on top with 16 points, one ahead of Flensburg in second. Top scorers of group phase: Hans Lindberg 69, Domagoj Duvnjak 41, Marcin Lijewski 39 Injury report: Oscar Carlén – two torn ACLs since 2011, it still may take some time, after two years of injury; Torsten Jansen – slowly starting to train again after the surgery of his Achilles tendon (15/1), he could potentially make a comeback at the end of March; Pascal Hens - ankle sprain, but has good chances of playing in the last 16 Late entries after the group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): 6th place with 31 points out of 22 matches (14 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses), ten points behind the leaders THW Kiel and four points short of a berth for the next season of CL Notes: … played only two matches against Slovenian teams in the past – one victory and one draw against Koper in the previous season of CL Group Phase … had to make their way through the Wild Card Tournament beating Plock and St. Raphael … recorded the lowest point total (16) out of all group winners in the group phase … last season they were eliminated in the last 16 by domestic rivals Füchse Berlin

Key players

Gašper Marguč: Only a few would tout him as a serious contender for a goal-scoring crown, but his 65 goals in the group phase are more than impressive. The speedy winger paid no respect to the defending champions THW Kiel and

recorded 18 goals in two matches against them in the group phase.

Domagoj Duvnjak: The Croatian is the key to everything in Hamburg’s attacks. Duvnjak is not just a typical playmaker, but also a scorer and shooter. In defence the world and EHF EURO silver medallist is

building the middle block with his country-fellow Igor Vori.

Sebastian Skube: With 42 goals in the VELUX EHF Champions League season 2011/12, Sebastian Skube was one of the key to success for Cimos Koper. Last summer the 25-year-old Slovenian international has

transferred from the last season’s quarter-finalist to the Slovenian runners-up.

Hans Lindberg: The Danish right wing was four times among the three best scorers of German Bundesliga. The two-times EHF EURO champion and runner-up at the 2011 WCh in Sweden is the counterpart of Anders Eggert in the

Danish national team and is the most successful HSV shooter in the past years.

Borut Mačkovšek: He had just turned 17 when he got his first feel of the European topflight at the start of the 2009/10 season. In less than two years Mačkovšek has become one of the key players in Celje and many

see him as a worthy successor of the legendary sniper Aleš Pajovič on the left back position in the national team.

Pascal Hens: The HSV team captain defied all injury problems in the past seasons and is back on track. The 2007 world champion only focuses on the club side now after resigning from the national team. Left back Hens is

famous for his jump shots and shots from left back.

Coaches Vladan Matić: The former Yugoslavian national team player, who was twice bronze medallist at World Championships (1999 and 2001), played for Partizan Belgrade and Pick Szeged, before he became a coach in 2006 at

the Hungarian top team. His biggest success in Szeged was the Hungarian title in 2007. He moved on and coached Hungarian side Ferencváros, before taking over Celje in 2011, where he is forming a younger team, which already won Slovenian cup and championship silver in 2012.

Martin Schwalb: Since 2005 he has been working for HSV. Schwalb (49) also coached Wallau-Massenheim, where he had played before and became three-time German

champion. In scoring 2272 goals he is the 4th best all time scorer in German Bundesliga. With the national team he became silver medallist at the 1984 Olympics and won bronze at the 1998 EHF EURO. His biggest coaching successes were the German title in 2011, the Cup Winners’ Cup title in 2007, the German cup titles in 2006 and 2010 and the semi-final of the CL three times. 26

REALE ADEMAR LEÓN vs MKB VESZPRÉM KC (Spain) (Hungary)

1st leg: Sunday, 17 March, 17:00, Palacio de los Deportes de León 2nd leg: Saturday, 23 March, 19:30, Veszprém Arena

Head-to-head stats: 1-0-5 (152:172)

25/03/2012: 25:27 in Veszprém, VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16, 2nd leg 17/03/2012: 31:28 in León, VELUX EHF Champions League Last 16, 1st leg 28/02/2009: 30:32 in León, EHF Champions League Main Round 15/02/2009: 26:28 in Veszprém, EHF Champions League Main Round 03/03/2002: 18:30 in Veszprém, EHF Champions League Quarter-finals 24/02/2002: 22:27 in León, EHF Champions League Quarter-finals

Qualification for last 16: fourth place in Group A Road to last 16: After massive departures of key players after the last season the León´s youngsters were virtually written off from the race to the knock-out stage, but they confirmed the role of group´s dark horses leaving Montpellier behind as they beat the French champions on both occasions. However they had to shiver until the last minutes of Round 10 match between Hamburg and Montpellier. Top scorers of group phase: Carlos Ruesga 48, Josu Goni 37, Felipe Borges 31 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after the group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 13 March 2013): 3rd place with 31 points out of 21 matches (15 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses), eleven points behind the leaders FC Barcelona Intersport, one point ahead of Naturhouse La Rioja in the race for the third and the last berth in the CL 2013/14 Notes: … just several days before the 1st leg Brazilian left wing Felipe Borges transferred to Montpellier … will be playing against Veszprém at home exactly one year after their only win over this opponent … out of four remaining players (Alvaro Cabans, Gonzalo Carou, Iosu Goni and Carlos Ruesga) who witnessed the last year´s success only Ruesga scored in the crucial rematch in Veszprém … in the previous season they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Füchse Berlin despite a 12 goal lead from the first leg … with only two players over 30 and the average age of 23 years and 5 months the second youngest team of the Last 16 (behind Celje)

Qualification for last 16: first place in Group B Road to last 16: Veszprém were consistently dominant for most of the group phase, winning by 10 goals in five of their first eight games. The only dip in their form came in the penultimate game against reigning champions THW Kiel, who they had narrowly beaten in the first leg. A heavy defeat against the Germans did not seem to harm Veszprém, who ended with a seven goal victory over Atlético Madrid to secure top spot in Group B. Top scorers of group phase: László Nagy 50, Gábor Császár 44, Tamás Iváncsik 34 Injury report: Marco Oneto – he injured his kidney with his own elbow after a fall on 17/02 against Kiel Late entries after the group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 13 March 2013): They finished the main round on the 1st place with 38 points out of 20 matches (19 wins, 1 loss), one point ahead of Szeged - the only serious rival for the single Hungarian berth in the next season of CL. Notes: … eliminated four consecutive times since the 2008/09 season by Spanish teams in the last 16 or quarter-finals, including last season, when León stopped Veszprém in the Last 16 … best result in the CL was the final 2001/02 against SC Magdeburg after beating León in the quarter-finals … MKB were among the CL top 16 teams 14 times … Déjà vu for Veszprém – like in the last season they had concluded the group phase with a win over Atlético Madrid, before they were drawn against León … Carlos Perez, who missed the goal in the last minute last year, left Veszprém after 16 years and joined Qatari club Al-Shamal.

Key players

Gonzalo Carou: The powerful line player from Argentina is one of the keys to the success of one of the best non-European national team. Carou is a wall in León´s defence and very movable in attack – one to lead the young team.

László Nagy: It was THE transfer of year, when right back Nagy returned to his home-country after 12 years at FC Barcelona. 2.10 metres tall Nagy started a major handball euphoria in Hungary and Veszprem. The two-time CL

winner is one of the best left handed players in the world with strengths in attack and defence.

Iosu Goni Leoz: One of the young future stars of Spanish handball became the second best scorer of the club in the group phase. His father Javier was a goalkeeper in Teka Santander and

Atlético Madrid and his two brothers play handball as well.

Mirko Alilović: Together with Hungarian international Nándor Fazekas, Alilović is part of one of the best goalkeeper duos in the current season. He arrived from Celje three years ago. He won silver medals from the 2009

World Championship and 2010 EHF EURO with Croatian national team.

Carlos Ruesga: The only reigning world champion from León is the most experienced player in the rejuvenated León squad. The tall left back is playing his seventh season in the VELUX EHF Champions League with

León and formerly with Portland San Antonio.

Gábor Császár: The best Hungarian scorer at the London 2012 Olympics and the best Veszprém scorer (besides Marko Vujin, who left to THW Kiel) in the previous season. Császár is a superb mixture of a playmaker and

shooter, an organiser and scorer for his teams.

Coaches Manolo Cadenas: Back to his roots: Cadenas (57) has returned to Leon, where he had been coach from 1995 to 2007, in the “golden era” of the club. He led Ademar to their only national championship

title in 2001, two cup titles and two titles in the EHF Cup Winners’ Cup. Cadenas also coached in Santander, where he won the Spanish cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup, and Valladolid (1991 – 1995). After his first stint at Leon he changed to Barcelona and Granollers.

Antonio Carlos Ortega Six-time winner of the CL, five European Cup triumphs, six-time Spanish champion, 14 different cup titles in Spain, a silver medallist at the EHF EURO 1998 and Olympic bronze medallist in 2000 – Ortega’s cabinet of medals

and trophies is absolutely huge. As a player for Barcelona he won every possible title at least three times. In 2005 he started his coaching career in Antequera, last summer he left Spain for the first time to take on the challenge in Veszprém.

PICK SZEGED vs VIVE TARGI KIELCE

(Hungary) (Poland)

1st leg: Sunday, 17 March, 15:00, Városi Sportcsarnok, Szeged 2nd leg: Sunday, 24 March, 17:00, Hala Legionów, Kielce

Head-to-head stats: No matches played in the CL or EC

Qualification for last 16: fourth place in Group D Road to last 16: Only in the last round of the group phase Szeged clinched the play-off berth as their direct rivals from Kadetten Schaffhausen failed to make the last step and win at Zagreb. Szeged´s final match in Berlin turned into an exhibition afterwards. Pick lost all away matches in the group, but three home victories including the last second thriller with Kadetten (30:29) paved their way for the top sixteen. Top scorers of group phase: František Šulc 62, Jonas Larholm 43, Gábor Ancsin 33 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 13 March 2013): 2nd place with 37 points out of 20 matches (18 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss), one point behind the top ranked Veszprém in the race for the only Hungarian berth in the CL 2013/14 Notes: … team with the lowest number of points (6) to qualify for the last 16 after only three victories and seven defeats … this is the last season for the head coach László Skaliczki as he is going to be replaced by Juan Carlos Pastor from Spain during the summer … their top scorer of group phase František Šulc scored the CL record 17 goals in one match two years ago … they played only twice against teams from Poland as they beat Płock on both occasions -

Qualification for last 16: first place in Group C Road to last 16: Kielce’s journey through the group phase has been flawless. Opening with four clear victories, the first real challenge for the Polish champions came in the back to back matches against HC Metalurg, but two low scoring victories meant that first place in the group was all but certain. Having lost some key players during the winter break, Kielce ended the group phase without playing their best handball, but coach Wenta cannot complain with 10 wins from 10. Top scorers of group phase: Michał Jurecki 52, Ivan Čupič 49, Krzysztof Lijewski and Rastko Stojković 30 Injury report: Ivan Čupić injured his shoulder at the World Championships in Spain and will not be back before May. Manuel Štrlek suffered injury of right hand in Spain as well, but he might be ready for the second leg, Tomasz Rosiński is after the knee surgery and will not return before April Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 11 March 2013): 1st place with 38 points out of 20 matches (19 wins, 1 loss), leading by two points ahead of Płock. Only the Polish champion will reach the next edition of the CL. Notes: … only the second team with a perfect record (10 out of 10) in the group phase since 2009 … won only one out of six matches against Hungarian teams (Veszprém) … three players met Szeged in 2008/09 season in the Rhein Neckar Lôwen uniforms as Karol Bielecki scored 11 goals (7 in Szeged), Grzegorz Tkaczyk 8 (missed game in Szeged) and Sławomir Szmal was in the goal … In the same season Manuel Štrlek scored 9 goals for Zagreb in Szeged … Venio Losert was in León´s squad last season when they beat Pick twice …

Key players

Jonas Larholm: The Swedish 2012 Olympic silver medallist has strengthened the Szeged back court. He was the most important transfer of Szeged before the start of this season. He played two years at FC

Barcelona before his move to Aalborg and later to Pick.

Sławomir Szmal: The former World Handball Player of the Year is one of the key players in the Polish national champions’ defence. The goalkeeper played several years for Rhein Neckar Löwen. His

biggest success so far was a silver medal at the 2007 WCh and a bronze at the 2009 WCh.

Roland Mikler: Together with Nándor Fazekas, who plays for Veszprém, Mikler is the number one in the Hungarian national team. The goalkeeper changed from Dunaferr to Szeged

two years ago and immediately became a strong base for the famous Pick defence.

Michał Jurecki Kielce’s powerful left back Michał Jurecki returned to Poland after a three season stint in Germany, which included spells as HSV Hamburg and TuS N-Lübbecke, and has been one of the club’s most consistent scorers since. 28-year-old

Jurecki reached the 2007 WCh final and has made over 100 appearances for his country.

Attila Vadkerti: Since the start of his career more than ten years ago, the left wing only played for one club: Pick Szeged. In the meantime Vadkerti became a constant member of the Hungarian national team, finishing fourth at the 2012

Olympics.

Karol Bielecki: Despite having lost sight on his left eye following an accident during an international in June 2010, he is still known for his “hammer shots”. The left back started his career with a

great performance at the 2004 EHF EURO. He then played for German clubs and returned to his home country before the current season. He has the same medal tally as Szmal.

Coaches László Skaliczki: The 57-year-old is highly experienced in handball from his past as a player to the present as a EHF master coach. He started his coaching career in 1989 at Békéscsaba and became Hungarian youth

national team coach in 1992, before returning to club level in 1995 in Szeged. Intermediately he coached other clubs and the Hungarian men’s national team for a long period. In 2010 he returned back to his roots and started coaching at Pick.

Bogdan Wenta: The 51-year-old Wenta was a player in Spain, Germany and even played for the German national team after changing his citizenship. Directly after finishing his active career he became assistant coach in Flensburg, and become

Polish national team coach in 2004 then acted as head coach at Magdeburg from 2006 onwards. Since 2008 he is coach in Kielce and constantly has led his team to the CL.

spot. Lauge can play on the centre back and the left back positions.

Arpad Sterbik: The 2004 World Handball Player of the Year was part of the famous Atlético goalkeeper duo together with José Hombrados. Now he is aiming for an equal performance with Danijel Šarić at Barcelona. Sterbik is

known for his patience and the minimum of movements in the goal.

Kasper Nielsen: At age 37 he is Silkeborg’s most experienced player. His clear strength is the defence. In 2007 he was the CL finalist with Flensburg-Handewitt where he played four years in total. He joined Silkeborg in 2010 and was

also part of the Danish national team that won the 2012 EHF EURO.

Siarhei Rutenka: In 2011 the Belarusian became the second player to win five CL titles with three clubs. After lifting the trophy in 2004 with Celje, he won three titles with Ciudad Real, followed by the victory with Barca. Left back, who often

switches to the pivot, was the CL’s top scorer twice.

Henrik Toft Hansen: When AG København went bankrupt in July 2012, Henrik Toft Hansen had to look for a new club – and found it at Silkeborg. The line player is the brother of THW Kiel’s Rene Toft Hansen and also his sister is

playing for the Danish national team. Together with his brother he was part of the Danish EHF EURO 2012 winners.

Juanin Garcia: The all-time record scorer of the Spanish Asobal league is still one of the best wing players in Europe. In this season Garcia is also supposed to integrate his successor Straňovský in Barcelona. Garcia is 2005

world champion with Spain and two times CL winner with Barcelona, in 2008 he was Spain’s top scorer at the Beijing Olympics.

Coaches Carsten Albrektsen: He was something like a missionary from 2007 until 2009 when Albrektsen was the first coach of the British men’s national team, preparing their first steps for the Olympic Games in

London. While acting as coach in Bjerringbro Silkeborg. His biggest successes were finishing twice as runners-up in the Danish league, which subsequently led to the qualification for the group phase of the CL. He also coached German clubs Hameln, Magdeburg, Gummersbach and Kiel and the Icelandic national team until 2007.

Xavi Pascual: The name is a “double feature” at Barca, as the coach of the successful handball or the basketball teams both coaches have the same name, but are different people. Handball coach Pascual played for a lengthy period in Barcelona

and some other Spanish clubs, before becoming goalkeeper’s coach at the record winner of the CL winners in 2005, where he started working with the legend David Barrufet and others. He then became the successor of Manolo Cadenas at Barcelona – and with this change came success: In 2011 his team won the CL. 38

GORENJE VELENJE vs SG FLENSBURG-HANDEWIT (Slovenia) (Germany)

1st leg: Sunday, 17 March, 19:30, Rdeča Dvorana, Velenje 2nd leg: Saturday, 23 March, 17:15, Flens Arena, Flensburg

Head-to-head stats: 15/02/1997: 17:29 in Flensburg, EHF Cup quarter-finals, 2nd leg 08/02/1997: 19:28 in Velenje, EHF Cup quarter-finals, 1st leg

Qualification for last 16: third place in Group C Road to last 16: Slovenian champions lost the home fortress in the last round against the group winners from Kielce, but especially thanks to their performances and results in Rdeča Dvorana Velenje easily sailed past the knockout stage gates. However they could have had more than twelve points on their account, if they had not squandered the promising lead in Bjerringbro Silkeborg (26:27). Top scorers of group phase: Jure Dolenec 54, Fahrudin Melić 53, Marko Bezjak 51 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 8 March 2013): They have won the main round of the Slovenian league, three points ahead of Celje and five ahead of Koper. They lost just one out of 20 matches (at Koper). The champions and the runners-up qualify for the next season of the CL. Notes: … Velenje lost all four matches against German teams in the CL … have reached the Last 16 for the fourth time, but in all previous participations it was their final destination … in 2010 for the last time, when they were eliminated by Ciudad Real … big summer sale is coming after the season as Melić is leaving to Paris HB, Dino Bajram to Pfadi Winterthur, Jure Dolenec and Matej Gaber to Montpellier, Marko Bezjak to Magdeburg … Bajram won the CL trophy in 2003/04 with Celje when they beat Flensburg in the finals

Qualification for last 16: second place in Group A Road to last 16: With a number of injuries to high-profile players, Flensburg stuttered at the start of the group phase, with two wins, two draws and one loss in the first half of their campaign. A win against eventual group winners HSV Hamburg kick-started Flensburg’s season, going unbeaten until the end of the group, with their inconsistent early form preventing them from finishing top of the group.

Top scorers of group phase: Anders Eggert 59, Holger Glandorf 55, Lasse Svan Hansen 41 Injury report: Petar Đorđić tore his cruciate ligament last summer, but there is some chance of his return to the court in last 16, Arnór Atlason is out until May with a torn Achilles tendon Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): They sit on the third (and for the CL 2013/14 last qualifying) place of Bundesliga six points behind leaders THW Kiel and one ahead of Füchse Berlin. Out of 22 matches they won 16, tied three and lost three. Notes: … remained unbeaten on home ground in the group phase …despite their long and successful history, the winners of the last edition of the Cup Winners’ Cup (2012) never made it to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne … the head coach Ljubomir Vranjes is still on the playing list although the last time he played in the CL four years ago … at their previous trip to the knock-out stage they were crushed at home by 14 goals by Ciudad Real in the quarter-finals … they are 8-1-3 against Slovenian teams … in 2003/04 they lost in the CL final against Celje

Key players

Jure Dolenec: The 23-year-old tall sharp shooter started his career at Drustvo Termo in Slovenia, before changing to Mercur and now the right back plays his second season in Velenje. Despite his young age Dolenec is already a key

player in the young Slovenian national team and was one of their best scorers at the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia.

Mattias Andersson: The goalkeeper won the EHF Champions League in 2007 with his former club THW Kiel. Thanks to the saves of the Swedish national team member Flensburg won the Cup Winners’ Cup in the 2011/12 season and

finished second in the German league. Andersson is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the whole competition. He won a silver medal with Sweden at London 2012.

Marko Bezjak: The “Wasps’” captain is a key player in the defence nowadays, after he had been one of the top shooters the seasons before. In his third VELUX EHF Champions League season Bezjak will share the playmaker role

with Dobelsek.

Anders Eggert: Fast, faster, Eggert: The Dane had to fill the biggest shoes ever in Flensburg as successor to the legendary left wing Lars Christiansen. But he coped perfectly with this situation and was top scorer of the Bundesliga two

years ago. Eggert is two-times EHF EURO champion and runner-up of the 2011 WCh.

Fahrudin Melić: He has been a driving force for Gorenje Velenje in his first season in the competition with the club. The 28-year-old right winger is set to join the star-studded Paris Saint Germain next season but has his sights

firmly set on going as far as possible with Gorenje Velenje this season.

Holger Glandorf: Years ago it was impossible to find any German stars in the Flensburg squad, but times have changed. One of two German 2007 world champions in the roster is left handed shooter Holger Glandorf. Despite some

injury breaks, the right back always returned to a high level of performance.

Coaches Branko Tamše: Since 2010 Branko Tamše is the head coach of Gorenje, but ten more years the 34 year old Slovenian is part of the club. Before becoming head coach Tamše was

among the coaching team of the current Slovenian champions. The major task of the former youth and junior national team player is to rebuild a young team with hungry talents.

Ljubomir Vranjes: Player, manager, coach – this the running order of the career of former Swedish international player. After retiring as a player he became club manager in 2009 and coach in November 2010. His biggest

success on the bench was the title in the Cup Winners’ Cup 2012 and finishing second in the German league in the same season. As a player he became World Champion in 1999 and three-times EHF EURO champion.

CHEKHOVSKIE MEDVEDI vs THW KIEL

(Russia) (Germany) 1st leg: Thursday, 14 March, 19:30, Sport hall Olympiyskiy, Chekhov 2nd leg: Sunday, 24 March, 19:30, Sparkassen Arena, Kiel

Head-to-head stats:

0-0-2 (51:60) 28/02/2008 : 26:32 in Chekhov, EHF Champions League: Main Round 17/02/2008 : 25:28 in Kiel, EHF Champions League: Main Round

Qualification for last 16: third place in Group A Road to last 16: Chekhov confirmed the reputation of „kings of draws“ in the Group A as they recorded four draws and in the last three season they have already recorded eleven draws. However, they were always losing points when they squandered several goal cushions in the final minutes against Montpellier or Flensburg and could not defend one goal lead twice against Hamburg. Top scorers of group phase: Timur Dibirov 52, Sergei Gorbok 46, Sergiy Shelmenko 38 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 14 March 2013): 1st place with an unblemished record of 40 points out of 20 matches (20 wins). Fourteen points ahead of second Kaustik Volgograd. Two teams from Russia will qualify for the next edition of the CL. Notes: … did not win against the two German opponents in the group losing once and drawing three times … - in total they are 4-6-16 against German clubs in the EC … their biggest success in the CL was the participation at the inaugural edition of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2010, when Kiel took their second of three trophies in this competition … founded in 2001 as a successor of CSKA Moscow, since then they won all eleven Russian titles … the EHF Champions League trophy is the only major piece missing in the accolades of Medvedi´s coach Vladimir Maximov (Olympic winner, European and world champion)

Qualification for last 16: second place in Group B Road to last 16: The defending VELUX EHF Champions League winners began the season where they left off, beating Atletico Madrid in the opening game, and followed that with two comprehensive wins. A 31:30 defeat against Veszprém, followed by another defeat against Celje Pivovarna Lasko left many questioning whether Kiel were capable of retaining their title. However, Kiel stormed back into form, winning each of their remaining games and defeating eventual group winners Veszprém by 11 goals, has shown that the Germans are not going to go away quietly. Top scorers of group phase: Filip Jícha 45, Niclas Ekberg and Marko Vujin 38 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): Leading the German Bundesliga one point ahead of Rhein Neckar Löwen. After 23 rounds they have 20 wins, 1 draw and two losses (at home against Melsungen, and at Flensburg). Three places for Germany next season. Notes: … in total they played 12 EC matches against clubs from the former Soviet Union and won 11 times … the only defeat by Dynamo-Lukoil Astrakhan could not stop them in the semi-finals of the 2003/04 EHF Cup on the way to the winning trophy … the most successful attack in the group phase with 329 goals (eight ahead of Barcelona) … like Medvedi – remained unbeaten on home ground …. since 2005 THW have made it at least to the quarter-finals in every season … in their 16th participation in the CL they made it among the best 16 teams for the 14th time … seven countries represented in the squad of the defending champions (Germany, Sweden, France, Serbia, Denmark, Czech Republic, Iceland)

Key players

Sergei Gorbok: A classical shooter with a big variety of shots. The Belarusian player, Gorbok, started his career in Arkatron Minsk. His international club career took off in 2005 when he joined RK Celje winning the Slovenian championship in

2006 and 2007 as well as playing in the CL. He transferred to German side Rhein Neckar Löwen in the 2007/08 before moving to Chekhovskie at the start of the 2010/11 season.

Thierry Omeyer: No current player of all CL clubs has collected more titles than the French goalkeeper: three times world champion, twice Olympic champion, two times EHF EURO champion, four times CL champion, world handball player of the year and nearly 20 domestic

titles are on Omeyer’s tally. His reflexes between the sticks make him the first choice for the national team and THW Kiel – and he likes the ‘big matches’.

Timur Dibirov: He is competing in his ninth successive EHF Champions League season with Chekhovskie Medvedi. He was named as the left wing in the All-Star team at the 2013 WCh in Spain and had the most steals (20) during the tournament,

where Russia reached the quarter-finals.

Filip Jícha: The left and centre back was the first Czech player ever to be world handball player of the year. Jicha – two times CL winner in 2010 and 2012 – was twice top scorer of this competition, too. He is a danger to all defence sides

with his one-against-one action and his tough shots, but he is also a strong defence player.

Alexej Rastvortsev: A bear-like man, who shoots hammers from far distances and a pure wall in defence – Rastvortsev is one of the most experienced players in the Medvedi team, and with a stable level of performing.

Markus Ahlm The THW team captain is playing his last season in Kiel after winning the CL three times. The line player is the core of the THW defence and has been a constant threat from the six metre line for more than a decade.

Coaches

Vladimir Maximov : A living legend – Maximov (67) is still the only person who has become Olympic champion as a coach and a player. After his career on the court, also crowned with a silver medal at the WCh in 1978 and the

Champions Cup in 1973, Maximov took to coaching in 1992. He led the CIS and Russian national teams to gold at the Olympics (1992 and 2000), World Championships (1993 and 1997) and the EHF EURO (1996).

Alfred Gislason The Icelander (53) is the only current coach, who has won the CL with two different clubs - in 2002 with SC Magdeburg and in 2010 and 2012 with THW Kiel. His current team has become four-time German

champions, three-time German cup winners, four-time German supercup winner, two-time EHF Trophy winners, collected an EHF Cup along with an IHF Super Globe title. In his active career he played 190 international matches for Iceland and became German champion twice with Essen. 46

HC DINAMO MINSK vs HC METALURG (Belarus) (FYR Macedonia)

1st leg: Thursday, 14 March, 19:00, Palace of Sports, Minsk 2nd leg: Saturday, 23 March, 18:00, Boris Trajkovski, Skopje

Head-to-head stats: 1-0-0 (27:21)

03/09/2010: 27:21 in Porto (POR), VELUX EHF Champions League, final of the qualification tournament

Qualification for last 16: third place in Group D Road to last 16: Minsk had to fight their way to the Group Phase through the qualification against Besiktas. And after first three rounds they were only with one point despite being very close to the huge sensation in Barcelona. But the five game winning streak propelled Dinamo towards their first ever participation in the knock-out stage. Top scorers of group phase: Vasko Ševaljević 49, Pavel Atman 43, Dzmitry Nikulenkau 37 Injury report: no injuries reported Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): 1st place with 27 points out of 16 matches (13 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), however a thrilling race for the only Belarusian ticket to the next season can be expected as SKA Minsk and Brest Meshkov are formidable contenders. Notes: … their debut in the knock-out stage … like Metalurg, Minsk had to go all the way from the qualification tournament and the winner of this fixtures will play their first ever CL quarter-final … six East and South European countries represented in the line-up … are 2-0-1 against teams from former Yugoslavia … in the crucial match of the qualification tournament in the 2009/10 season they were defeated by ten goals by Metalurg´s city rivals Vardar (24:34)

Qualification for last 16: second place in Group C Road to last 16: Four wins from their opening four games sent out a clear signal to the rest of Europe that HC Metalurg are aiming high this season. Two successive defeats against group winners Kielce were a temporary blow for the Macedonians, but they held firm and secured second place, thanks to their tough defence, the best in the competition so far, which conceded just 215 goals. Top scorers of group phase: Naumče Mojsovski 55, Renato Vugrinec 52, Dejan Manaskov 42 Injury report: Dejan Manaskov has already undergone a successful surgery of his injured knee, but he is out for the rest of season. Late entries after group phase: David Koražija (SLO) left wing from Ribnica, he played four seasons in Veszprém Current situation in the domestic league (as of 11 March 2013): 1st place in the regional SEHA league with 36 points (three points for a win) out of 17 matches (12 wins, 5 losses), leading by point ahead of Zagreb and two points ahead of Brest. Notes: … the team with the best defence of all 24 teams in the group phase ... clinched the berth for the Last 16 for the second straight time, last season they were closely eliminated by Zagreb in the Last 16 … Milan Levov, Velko Markoski, Stefche Alushovski, Petar Angelov and Nikola Mitrovski played for Vardar when they beat Minsk by ten goals three years ago…. Just one week before the first leg they beat another Belarusian club Brest Meshkov 28:26 on the home court in the SEHA league

Key players

Vasko Ševaljević: He is competing in his first ever CL season, but his prolific scoring for Dinamo Minsk would have you thinking otherwise. The 24-year-old left back moved to Minsk after two years playing in the Asobal League in Spain with Amaya Sport San

Antonio. It has been a season of firsts for Ševaljević, who was part of the Montenegro team that played in their first ever World Championship in January.

Darko Stanić: He got his nickname “minister of defence” during the successful EHF EURO 2012, where the Serbian was awarded best goalkeeper of the tournament and won the silver medal with his team. Stanić was supposed to

transfer to Göppingen, but then signed with Skopje, where he wants to finish his career. His reflexes and his calmness make Stanić of the best current goalkeepers in the world.

Sergiy Onufryienko: Wherever he plays, the Ukrainian international is always among the top scorers. He started his career at Zaporozhye. In 2009 he transferred to Dinamo and became their key player. In EC competitions, including the CL, the 27-year-old right

back scored over 300 goals.

Naumče Mojsovski: The Macedonian left back has been making a constant impact for the past three years – in the Macedonian national team as well as at Metalurg. Besides top star Kiril Lazarov he is the top scorer for the Macedonians, for Metalurg he is shooter and

playmaker in one person.

Pavel Atman: Usually the Russian national team only count on players, who play for a Russian club. One major exception for years has been playmaker Pavel Atman. He came from his home club Kaustik Volgograd to Minsk in 2010 and was top scorer of his

team in their first season in the CL with 63 goals.

Filip Mirkulovski: Once Metalurg, always Metalurg is the motto of the Skopje centre back, as he goes into his eleventh international season for the Macedonian champions. He is also one of the key player in the Macedonian national team..

Coaches Sergij Bebeshko: A surprising phone call changed the life of Sergij Bebeshko: In December 2009 the former Ukrainian international, who was living in Ciudad Real at that time, was asked on the phone to become new coach of Dinamo. Bebeshko agreed

and after 18 years in different countries - mainly Spain - the 1992 Olympic champion returned to Belarus. He led Minsk to three straight championships including the first ever double.

Lino Červar: He was the most successful coach of the Croatian men’s national team, becoming Olympic (2004) and world champion (2003), and collecting several more medals like two WCh silver medals in 2005 and 2009 or EHF EURO silver 2008 and 2010. Parallel

to his work for the Croatian Federation, Červar was coach of RK Zagreb for a long period. In 2009 he became Metalurg coach – a job he focuses on since resigning from the Croatian national team.

1st leg: Sunday, 17 March, 18:00, Palacio Vistalegre, Madrid 2nd leg: Sunday, 24 March, 18:00, Max-Schmeling-Halle, Berlin

23/10/2011: 37:33 in Berlin, VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase 19/02/2012: 32:27 in Madrid, VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase

Qualification for last 16: third place in Group B Road to last 16: The runners-up of two previous season lost several key players during the summer and had to take several blows from the other two powerhouses in the group as they lost all matches against Kiel and Veszprém. They also lost two points in Savehof unexpectingly, but their goal of reaching the knock-out stage was never really endangered. Top scorers of group phase: Kiril Lazarov 46, Nikolaj Markussen 26, Joan Cañellas Reixach 26 Injury report: José Javier Hombrados with a torn anterior cruciate ligament is out at least until the end of April, Adnan Šabanović with the same diagnosis out for the season, Mariusz Jurkiewicz injured his hand at the World Championship and is out until the end of April, even more players doubtful with minor health problems (names not specified) Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): 2nd place with 37 points out of 21 matches (18 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), five points behind the leaders FC Barcelona. The fight for the title seems to be lost, but they should still get one of three Spanish places in the CL 2013/14 easily. Notes: … three times CL winners … lost both matches against their German opponent Kiel in the group … like their last 16 rivals they were part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne last year … only team to reach the final tournament in all three editions since 2010 (but never won the trophy thought they were finalists twice) … reached at least quarter-finals on nine out of ten appearances in the CL … two recently crowned world champions in the team – Julen Aguinagalde and Joan Cañellas Reixach… just one week before the first leg their manager Luis Miguel Lopez stepped down officially due to personal reasons … rich history of 43 German encounters (25-2-16)

Qualification for last 16: second place in Group D Road to last 16: After a victory against Dinamo Minsk in the opening round, an 11 goal defeat to Barcelona could have knocked the wind out of Berlin’s sails, but Fuchse bounced back. Seven wins in their remaining eight games, including gaining revenge over Barcelona in the return leg, saw Berlin sit comfortably in second place with 16 points, five ahead of Minsk in third. Top scorers of group phase: Ivan Ninčević 45, Bartłomiej Jaszka 37, Iker Romero 30 Injury report: no injuries reported

Late entries after group phase: none Current situation in the domestic league (as of 12 March 2013): 4th place (38 points out of 23 matches, 16 wins, two draws, five defeats) is not enough for a ticket to the next season of the CL, they are trailing one point behind Flensburg who currently own the last German CL berth. Notes: … only their second season not only in the CL, but in the EC in generally … last season they made it to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 as newcomers … Iker Romero was the only defending champion who made it to Cologne last season after his transfer from Barcelona … on the home ground the foxes have a 100 per cent clear record this season … the rematch in Max-Schmeling-Halle has been sold out more than two weeks before the game … set the spectators record for the Group Phase by 13.333 fans against Barcelona in the O2 World … are 2-0-4 against sides from Spain … exactly like Atlético they have nine nations represented in the squad … 51

Key players

Kiril Lazarov A classic shooter from FYR Macedonia, Lazarov is the most successful scorer at a single EHF EURO event (2012 in Serbia) with 61 goals and a world championship (2009 in Croatia) with 92 goals. The

Macedonian was also twice top scorer of the CL – but still the title of the major club competition is missing in his cabinet despite playing for top clubs like Veszprém, Zagreb and now Madrid.

Silvio Heinevetter: The current number one goalkeeper in the German national team was one of the keys for the Füchse’s success in their debut season at the CL when they reached the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2012. Like a

typical goalkeeper, he is a little bit crazy, showing unorthodox moves and is extremely emotional.

Julen Aguinagalde He is one of the world’s top line players and presence on the line is a key for Atlético. He has proven that this season with his nomination for World Handball Player of the Year 2012 and being named on the 2013 World Championship All-Star

team. He joined Atlético from Reale Ademar in 2010 and his older brother Gurutz is a goalkeeper for EHF Cup side La Rioja.

Iker Romero: It was the Füchse’s first big international transfer coup when they signed the Spanish top player in 2011. Romero is a legend in his home country, being part of the 2005 world champion squad and winning several more medals with the national team. On club level

the always smiling left back started in Leon, before changing to Ciudad Real and then having successful years at FC Barcelona.

Ivano Balić Two-times world handball player of the year world and Olympic champion – but never winner of the EHF Champions League. Balić was the biggest transfer of this season at Madrid, and the experienced and creative

character inspires the Atlético team with his sensational ideas and passes.

Konstantin Igropoulo: The Russian right back arrived from FC Barcelona before the start of this season and was winner of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in 2011. With international experience in the national team as well as on club level, he should fill the

footsteps of Icelandic Alexander Petersson.

Coaches Talant Dujshebaev He arrived as a player in 2001 and he has stayed as a coach until now: 44-year-old has been loyal to his club for more than a decade. Since his arrival, this club became three-time CL winner, three-time finalist, four-time Spanish

champion, four-time Spanish cup winner, three-time and IHF Super Globe winner.

Dagur Sigurðsson: After 215 matches with nearly 400 goals for Iceland, he continued the line of successful Icelandic coaches in Europe. When acting as a director of his former club Valur Reykjavik and parallel to that as a coach of the Austrian

The event will take place for the fourth time in the LANXESS arena, Cologne on 1 and 2 June 2013 and will see the continent’s top four teams battling it out over two days to lift the coveted VELUX EHF Champions League trophy.

Journalists, photographers, TV and radio representatives can now submit their request for accreditation via an online form at ehfFINAL4.com, the event’s official website. Requests can only be made online.

Requests for media accreditation should be made by Friday 10 May at 15.00, almost two weeks after the completion of the Quarter-final matches.

Media accreditation is only open to professional media representatives working at the event. Freelance media representatives may be asked to provide additional evidence of their work.
