Györ face three former winners in main round

Four current or former winners of the Women’s EHF Champions League will play in the same main round group as the reigning champions of the European top flight, Györi Audi ETO KC, have been drawn to Group 2 alongside the 2012 winners Buducnost, the 2011 trophy holders Larvik HK and RK Krim Mercator, who dominated already twice in the competition (2001 and 2003).

The draw at the EHF Office in Vienna defined both main round quartets also setting a group of three main round newcomers for FC Midtjylland.

Danish champions will face Germany’s Thüringer HC, Sweden’s IK Sävehof and emerging Macedonian power WHC Vardar SCBT, who are in their first season amongst the Europe’s elite.

The first round of the next stage is scheduled for 1/2 February, the last for 15/16 March. Only two best teams of each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

Chase for Budapest begins with blockbusters

The long winter layoff in the EHF Champions League is unlikely to have lulled either fans or players into hibernation, as the eight best teams in the women’s premier club competition take centre stage this weekend.

The opening clash of the Main Round pits Midtjylland against Sävehof, two teams who defied the odds to advance from the preliminary group stage with every chance of vying for the Final 4 in Budapest, scheduled for May 3 and 4.

Former champions Krim Mercator and Larvik meet in what should also be a delicately balanced match-up in the Slovenian capital, with both sides eager to make a winning start in a fiercely competitive Group 2.

Holders Györi Audi ETO get their campaign underway with a home game against Montenegrin giants Buducnost Podgorica, with Katarina Bulatovic facing her former team mates as the Hungarian side aims to retain the trophy after winning it in grand style last season.Emerging force Vardar Skopje entertain Germany’s Thüringer with world player of the year Andrea Lekic set to lead the charge for the expensively assembled Macedonian outfit.

Despite being hit early in the first round by the injury of their playmaker Laerke Möller, the Danish champions were running abreast Györ with three wins out of three matches.

Although FC Midtjylland stumbled on the court of 2012 winners at Podgorica in the Round 4, they quickly regained the momentum and clinched their main round berth with one game to spare. With their victory at Dabas, Hungary not only did they send one of their rivals - FTC to the brink of elimination from the European top flight, but they also made a huge step towards securing of the top spot in Group B.

Their fifth victory in six matches in the last round (over Lublin) confirmed them for the Pot 1 of seeded teams and improved their chances to emulate their best result in the Europe’s premier competition from 2002/03 season, when they reached the semi-finals.

Line Jörgensen leads their top scorers with 26 goals ahead of the Dutch centre back Cornelia Groot with 24.

Lærke Møllercentre backDuring her childhood and teenage years, the Danish international had more success as a football player than in handball. In fact, she made it to the Danish U17 national team, before she decided to focus entirely on handball which she had been playing alongside football until then. She still has relations to the football world, in the form

of her boyfriend, former Danish football international Thomas Enevoldsen, who plays for Belgian club KV Mechelen.

Helle ThomsencoachComing from a handball mad family, she started playing at the age of five in Frederikshavn. She was a key part of the Frederikshavn team of the late nineties, reaching the Danish championship final in 1998 as well as the Danish Cup final and the quarter-finals of the EHF City Cup in 1999. In March 2012 she became head coach of FCM.

The 2012/13 season was her most successful so far, leading FCM to the Danish league and cup, as well as the semi-finals of the EHF Cup.

Fie Wollerleft wingAt the age of 5, when Fie Woller, now 21, started to play handball, she knew that her future was on the left wing, just like her idol Lars Christiansen. In FCM she used to play in the same team as her twin sister Cecilie. However, lack of time on the court made Cecilie move to league newcomer Nykøbing Falster Håndbold, so now Fie, who won the

W19 EHF EURO 2011 with Denmark, is the only representative of the Woller family in the FCM team.

Line Jørgensenright backThe captain of the Danish national team started playing handball at the age of 3. Her two cousins, Lars and Kenn Eiberg Jørgensen have both played in the Danish national team, both as right backs, just like her. When joining GOG and later FCM, she had to leave the western suburbs of Copenhagen where she grew up. The toughest part of moving

according to Line was being so far away from Brøndby Stadium and her favorite football team, Brøndby IF.

Sabine EnglertgoalkeeperFormer German national team player Englert, is in fact a former teammate of Kiel winger Dominik Klein. When she started playing at the age of 5 in Aschaffenburg, she was in the same mixed team as Klein. Only a few days after signing the contract with FCM in the early spring 2008, she played in her future home, the Ikast Brande Arena, with Hypo NÖ.

On the same occasion she sustained a knee injury, but since then, she has had happier memories of the hall.

Trine Troelsenleft backWhen joining FCM at the end of 2009, Troelsen actually began as an amateur, as FCM did not have sufficient financial means at the time to sign any more contracts. However, the problem was soon solved and Troelsen, who can play both centre and left back returned to the professional life she has enjoyed since 2003 with Viborg HK. She

was the team’s top scorer during their last Women’s EHF Champions League campaign in 2011/12 with 59 goals.

Louise Svalastog Spellerbergline playerDespite being a back court player for most of her career, a shortage on line players at former club KIF Kolding in the early 2000’s forced a change of position, which sparked a career in the Danish national team. Her husband Bo Spellerberg, with whom she has a four-year-old daughter Mille, plays for KIF Kolding København. In 2012, she took part in

the Danish version of the TV program Strictly come Dancing, where she reached the semi-final.

Trine Østergaard Jensenright wingEver since she started playing handball at the age of nine, Trine Østergaard has been ambitious. As a child was she determined to become a professional handball player. Being true to her motto “You are 100% sure to miss the chances you do not take”, she has not only made as a professional, but has become a key player for FCM, particularly after former

Danish international Maibritt Kviesgaard left this summer. In 2012 she also made her debut in the Danish national team.

The newcomers from Skopje certainly made a splash in their first campaign in Europe’s elite competition, with one of only two unbeaten records in the entire group matches. It was a shaky start for the star studded team, as they stumbled to a 23:19 win at Bera Bera, but they soon showed what they are capable of with a draw against last season’s runners-up Larvik.

Total dominance ensued for Vardar, with three consecutive wins by double digits and qualification was secure. A 31:29 win over Larvik in Round 6 gave them top spot in Group D and sent out warning to the rest of the competition. Jovanka Radicevic top scored on the day with seven goals, bringing her total to 28 and only two behind Andrea Lekic, who leads Vardar’s scorers in the competition.

A place in the main round was the ‘official’ target set by the club at the beginning of the season. However, after their performances so far, expectations have surely risen.

Andrea Lekićcentre backBefore she chose to concentrate on handball, Andrea was successful in several other sports at a young age. First she competed in karate and reached the “blue belt” before moving onto sports with a ball. It started with volleyball, but basketball attracted her attention, played football and also tennis. Lekić has won championship trophies with Knjaz Miloš, Krim

and Győr. She was voted as the IHF World Handball Player of 2013 and in the All Star teams of the EHF EURO 2012 and WCh 2013.

Indira KastratovićcoachKastratovic is starting her second season as coach. As a player, her greatest success was achieved with Kometal GP, playing twice in the EHF Champions League final, and winning the title in 2002. In 1997, she was the best scorer of the WCh with 71 goals as part of the Macedonian team. She was also part of the All-Star team at the WCh 2009. In 2006 she

quit her active playing career handball to concentrate her attention on coaching youth players.

Maja Zebićleft wingZebić has won seven league and seven cup titles in Croatia with Podravka and one title in the Regional League in 2009. With the Croatian champions she reached the final of the Cup Winners’ Cup (2005) and EHF Cup (2006). With Itxako Navarra she won the Spanish Super Cup, and with Zaječar last season won the double in Serbia. Since 2006,

Zebić has played for Croatia, playing in four EHF EUROs and three WCh, she won seventh place at the 2012 Olympics.

Tatiana Khmyrovaright backThe Russian national team player can play in all three back positions - left, centre and right back. Her career began with Dynamo Volgograd, where she played for eight years. With Dinamo she won three championships and one cup title in Russia. She has played in all youth categories and won gold at the World Youth Championship in 2008, the same

year she made her debut for the senior team. She played at the 2011 WCh (7th) and EURO 2012 (6th). MVP of the Youth WCh: 2008.

Inna SuslinagoalkeeperA former Russian national team player, she graduated from the University RGPU Rostov Don as a teacher. For the second time in her career she is playing outside of Russia, and earlier spent four seasons with GOG in Denmark. She has a two-year contract with Vardar ending in June 2014. She won the Russian championship with Lada in 2002,

2003 and 2004. She has twice been voted in the all-star team of the EHF EURO 2006 and the World Championship in 2009.

Allison Pineau left backAn extremely talented, but still young player, Pinеаu was ‘reserve’ fifteenth player in the French Olympic team at the 2008 Olympic Games. She was voted World Handball Players of the Year in 2009. With France, she has participated in the 2012 Olympic Games (quarter-finals), three EHF EUROs 2008, 2010, 2012 and three WChs 2007, 2009, 2011 and

she was voted in WCh All star team in 2009 and 2011.

regional titles). Last season she played in Rostov-Don and won the Russian cup.

Jovanka Radičević right wingIn 2012/2013 Radičević won two important gold medals; European champions with Montenegro and the Women’s EHF Champions League title with Győr. As a player with Budućnost, she has won seven championships and seven cup titles in Montenegro (2005-2011), two Regional League titles (2010, 2011) and two titles in the

The Swedish champions were the surprise package of the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches this season. After taking just one win in last season’s competition, not much more was expected from the almost exclusively Swedish side and an eight-goal loss in their opening game did little to suggest otherwise.

However, their season sparked into life with a hard fought win over Metz, coming from four goals behind at the break to snatch a 32:30 win and belief took a hold over the squad. A double-header against Thüringer came at the perfect time, as the German side were struggling with injuries. Sävehof took full advantage with six and seven-goal victories and left themselves on the brink of qualifying for their first main round.

In the penultimate game, they let a three-goal half-time lead slip at home to Krim Mercator, as the Slovenians came back to draw 25:25. However, the shared points were enough to send Sävehof through. Ida Oden and Jenny Alm were crucial for the team, contributing 36 and 32 goals respectively in their six matches.

Elin Karlssoncentre backThe 180 cm tall playmaker had a foreign adventure at a very young age. Even before she was 18, she went to Frederikshavn in Denmark to play for their U18 team who were close to reaching the final of the Danish championship. Today, at the age of 24, she dreams of climbing Kilimanjaro, but in the meantime she organises Sävehof´s attacking

play very well and has also appeared in five internationals for Sweden.

Henrik SignellcoachEven though he is only in his second year in charge of Sweden’s strongest women’s team, he has a long history in the Gothenburg based club behind him as he played eight years for the club during his active days which also included one match for Sweden’s national team. After his active career the 37-year-old was in charge of the male junior

team in Sävehof and later assistant coach for the men’s league team. In between he has also been assistant coach for Finland’s female national team.

Louise Sandleft wingThe 20-year old Swedish international, nicknamed Loui, has been crazy about playing ball all her life. As a child she played with the ball, when other girls played with dolls, and for her confirmation she only wanted a ball as present. With her 160 cm she is not among the tallest on a court, but she more than compensates for that through her outstanding

technique. Coach Henrik Signell claims that she can do things with the ball which he has never seen any other female player do.

Ida Odénright back26-year-old Odén is one of the most versatile female handball players, not only in Sävehof, but in Swedish handball in general. Although her basic position is the right back, she also functions very well as centre back and as left back. Odén, who got her international debut for Sweden in 2012, has been with Sävehof for nine years after joining from Borås HK.

Ida is a busy lady – along with her handball career she works at an IT company, and she works with bookkeeping and economy as well.

Filippa Idéhngoalkeeper23-year-old is one out of extremely few goalkeepers at top level who plays in shorts. She has explained that this makes her feel more free to move, and that being hit by a hard shot on a bare leg does not hurt any more than through a pair of tracksuit trousers. For the first two years of her career, which she started at the age of 12, she was

a backcourt player, but as both goalkeepers in her team were ill for a training session, she took over the new position and has kept it ever since.

Jamina Robertsleft backAlthough her names does not sound Swedish at all, but more British or American, 23-year-old Jamina was born in Sweden – in Bergsjön, close to Gothenburg, where her career has been unfolded. While playing the left back in her club team, she has been used as left wing from time to time in the national team, where she had her debut in 2010. Her father, James

was one of Sweden’s first professional body builders, but Jamina has never felt tempted to follow in his footsteps.

Linn Blomline playerUntil three years ago, 180 cm tall Linn Blom actually played left back. At that time, however, her coach at that time saw her potential on the line, where tall players also often come in useful, and since then she has had so much success in that position that she has made it into the national team. 21-year-old Linn has been deaf on her left ear all

her life, but that has not stopped her from being successful on the handball court.

Hanna Fogelströmright wingWhether her nickname “Birdie” relates to her last name which resembles the Swedish word for bird, fågel, or to the fact that she is afraid of birds is a bit unclear. While she does not risk to run into many birds in the handball halls, though, she is definitely not afraid of the fight on the court. Having won three titles with Sävehof at the age of only 21, she has

far from got enough triumphs yet, her philosophy being that she can never get fed up with winning.

The third trip to the Women’s EHF Champions League proved to be a lucky one for the German champions. After they recorded just a single point two years ago in their first attempt and having narrowly missed the main round last season, Thüringer did not stumble at the crucial step this time.

Since the draw of the group matches has been completed, Herbert Müller’s squad knew that their main rivals in the race for the ticket in the top eight will be four-time winners Hypo Niederösterreich. Surprisingly, the Romanian newcomers from Baia Mare refused to limit their participation to harvesting some experience and with their home wins made the qualification knot even tighter.

In the last round Thüringer found themselves under an imperative of at least four-goal victory, but they accomplished this feat surprisingly easily and beat Hypo by nine goals, also taking revenge for last season’s elimination in the Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals. Austrian Sonja Frey led German side with 36 goals in the group matches, followed by Alexandrina Barbosa with 34.

Kerstin Wohlboldcentre backShe is the extended arm of coach Herbert Müller since years. Already when Müller was coaching Nuremburg, she was at his side, and when he switched to Thüringer HC it was clear that Wohlbold (29) would join his squad again. Wohlbold, who intermediately played for Austrian side Dornbirn, is the mastermind of THC with exceptional passes, but also the

ability to go through the defence. She played in the CL Main Round four years ago with Nuremburg.

Herbert MüllercoachThe former mathematics lecturer at the university of Nuremburg was born in the German speaking minority in Timisoara, Romania, where he got in touch with handball very early. Together with his brother and “permanent” co-coach Helfried, Müller started at Augsburg, before leading 1. FC Nürnberg from the fourth division to three titles in 2005,

2007 and 2008. He returned to his home country for a short stint with Braşov and also became the Austrian national team coach.

Sonja Frey left wingAs THC coach Herbert Müller is parallel coach of the Austrian women’s national team, he knows well, which players have the right ambition. So his club signed left wing Sonja Frey in 2012, when she was only 19, but had already played nearly 40 matches for the national team – and had been awarded MVP of the U19 WCh in 2012. Before, Frey played

for Austrian sides WAT-Fünfhaus and MGA Fivers – and it was Frey who had paved the way for THC to become German champions 2013.

Ana Grosright backBefore joining Thüringer HC in 2012 Slovenian international (22) had been part of the squad of Audi ETO Győr, reaching the CL final against Podgorica, what was her last match for the Hungarian side. Gros started her career at Krim Ljubljana, before transferring to Győr in 2010, aged only 19. The student is four consecutive times national champion and

cup winner in three countries and played nearly 50 matches for the Slovenian national team.

Maike MärzgoalkeeperShe does not only know how to save shots, but is an expert in food and beverages too, as in her business life Maike März is a food technician. Although she has not played one single match in the German women’s team she is one of the best goalkeepers in Bundesliga. Three-time German champion and two-time cup winner has been part

of some successful German younger age national team, becoming runners-up at the U18 EHF EURO.

Nadja Nadgornaja left backBorn in Minsk, the parents of Nadja Nadgornaja are Ukrainian and Belarusian, but she moved to Germany already at the age of four. After starting as a swimmer like her brother she chose handball, as she preferred to be part of a team sport. And the decision was correct, as she became junior world champion 2008 and member of the All Star

Team of this tournament. In the 2012/13 season she was awarded as the best player of the Bundesliga.

Anja Althausline playerShe is the only one in the THC squad, who already raised the CL trophy – and even twice with Viborg HK in 2009 and 2010. Born in the famous handball city of Magdeburg, Althaus left her home already at the age of 17 to join Trier in 2000, becoming national champion for the first time in 2003. In her business life she switched from advertisement designer to

hairdresser – and she still styles her teammates in club and national team. She is also well-known for her huge shoes selection.

Lýdia Jakubisováright wingThe Slovak international (32) is one of the most experienced players in the THC squad, but will miss the start of the season due to an injury. Jakubisová can play both on right wing and right back, but since she is at THC, she found her place on the wing position. She was awarded Slovak handball player of the year 2012 – and had made her first steps in

Germany in 2009, when she first played for Sulzbach, then for Trier and Oldenburg, before arriving at Bad Langensalza.

RK Krim Mercator

RK Krim Mercator kick started their campaign in emphatic fashion with an eight-goal win over fellow main round qualifiers IK Sävehof and an equally impressive away win at HC Leipzig. There was a minor setback at the half-way mark in the group as a previously unimpressive Metz came to life and took their first two points in a 21:20 win over Krim.

Last season’s semi-finalists made up for it in the reverse fixture, with a six-goal win against the French side and a draw the following weekend against Sävehof proved to be a perfect result, as it sent both teams through with one round to spare. Krim finished the group matches in style against an injury weakened Leipzig, coasting to a 12-goal win against the German side with only ten players in the squad.

The Slovenian side were well balanced throughout the group. Four players scored over 20 goals in the six matches, with Croatian left back Andrea Penezic leading the attack with 28.

Nina Wörzcentre backThis will be the second season in Ljubljana for the 32-year old from Bremen, Germany. In her first season, when the bulk of the squad was nursing their injuries, Wörz had to step up and carry the load on both ends of the court. She was quite successful — with 46 goals she was joint second best scorer of the team, and she rapidly adapted to the role

of the main playmaker. She is set to cause more problems for the opposition defences with her passing and breakthroughs.

Tone TiseljcoachThe 52-year old from Celje is the most decorated Slovenian strategist, having won two consecutive CL trophies with Krim, and reached the EHF EURO final with men’s national team on home court in 2004. This success has earned him the moniker »Napoleon« and his 2nd season in his 2nd stint at Krim gives him another chance to position

the Ljubljana outfit even more as the one of Europe’s handball forces. He draws inspiration from different sporting legends.

Tamara Mavsarleft wingThis will already be the sixth consecutive CL appearance for the Ljubljana born and raised Mavsar. She was only 17 when she first tasted Europe’s elite, but she immediatelly made her mark on the team. Krim has continuously strenghtened its squad with reinforcement but for Mavsar’s position, and that fact alone proves her worth. She was short-listed for the

competition’s best young player in the last season, when her team fell short in the semi-finals.

Barbara Lazović-Varlecright backThe 25-year old from Brežice is expecting her eighth European season. All but one — a year-long stint in Zaječar, Serbia — will have been played at Krim. She is married to Vuk Lazović, a handball player from Serbia. After contemplating a switch, she remained loyal to the Slovenian national team. After Susann Müller’s departure for Leipzig she will have

a new contender for her position in the new season in the form of Patricia Vizitiu.

Talida TolnaigoalkeeperThe experienced 34-year-old will have to bear the burden of the first choice goalkeeper for some months, since Jelena Grubišić will be recovering from injury. But this should not be an overwhelming task for the seasoned veteran of the Romanian national team. She has 17 European seasons under her belt, 8 of them in the CL and 5 of them were with

Romanian powerhouse Vâlcea. She was closest to the coveted trophy in the 2010 unsuccesful final bid against Viborg.

Andrea Penezićleft backThe London Olympics were not a good place for the Croatian international. In England she picked up a tricky injury, which marred her last season at the perennial Slovenian champions. Hopefully the 27-year old, who used to play for Lokomotiva in her native Zagreb and later Podravka, will be trauma-free in her 7th CL season. She is a formidable

attacking force and a defensive rock, a true all-rounder. She was named the best Croatian player of the year for 5 consecutive times (2008-12).

Oana Manealine playerThe newcomer fill a void on the 6-meter line left by the retired club legend Lyudmila Bodnyeva. She was born and raised in Bucharest at her childhood club Vâlcea. Playing in Slovenia will be her maiden season abroad, although at 28 years of age she has plenty of top-level experience, going into her seventh consecutive CL season and the final

against Viborg in 2010. The 2011 Romanian player of the year is a fundamental part of the national team.

Katarina Krpežright wingWith the Spanish leftie Carmen Martin — Krim’s best scorer in the last CL season (54 goals) — being injured, the bulk of the responsibility on the right wing will fall to Krpež, who was a part of Krim’s vast influx of new talent before last season. She had tasted CL before at Zaječar and Metalurg, but it was at Krim where her full potential as a fast

break specialist and scorer can trully be exploited.

After having failed in seven consecutive European Cup finals before lifting the premiere trophy last May, the defending champions look like their appetite for success has been far from satiated. They entered the new campaign in an impressive fashion winning all six matches and emerging as a class of their own.

Only in the last two rounds, when their main round ticket and the top spot in Group A were already sealed and their key players benched for more time than usual, Györ’s rivals avoided crushing defeats. Away in Round 5 the Hungarian powerhouse won only by the narrowest margin over Hypo and in the last match against well-motivated Baia Mare, who had been still dreaming about second place before the match, Györ recorded a two-goal win.

Last summer two of Györ’s stalwarts departed for Vardar, but new signing Katarina Bulatovic is firing on all cyllinders and is making the memories of Andrea Lekic and Jovanka Radicevic fade away gradually. In six matches she scored 37 goals and proved herself again as one of the main contender for the top scorer’s award. Besides the Montengrin right back, coach Ambros Martin can also rely on the traditional fire power represented by the captain Anita Görbicz (37) and Heidi Loke (22 goals).

Anita Görbiczcentre backDespite being among the best players in the world over the last decade, the team captain (30) was waiting to secure one of big prizes at either club or national level for many years until she lifted the most coveted trophy with Győr in the 2012/13 season. Before that her only honours were individual titles: 2011/12 CL top scorer and World Handball Player of

Year (2005). She was voted for the best centre back at three WCh in a row (2003, 2005, 2007).

Ambros MartíncoachLike Veszprém, like Győr: Both the top men’s and women’s teams in Hungary are counting on Spanish coaches for the second season in a row. As Veszprém signed Carlos Ortega, Győr opted for Ambros Martín in 2012. He had been coaching top Spanish side Estrella Itxako for seven years, winning the EHF Cup in 2009 and reaching the final of the CL – after defeating his

current club Győr in the semi-final. He redeemed himself already in his first season with Győr with their first European trophy.

Ivett Szepesileft wingSeven goals in the group match against Cluj were the season’s highlight for left wing Yvett Szepesi in the previous EHF Champions League season, her first on the international courts. In the past she played for Dunaferr, Tolnau, Tamasi and Siófok in the Hungarian league but she made her switch to the champions just in time for their first European

trophy. She helped them out with 28 goals in 16 matches, which should guarantee her place in the starting line-up again.

Katarina Bulatovićright backThe Serbia-born left-handed shooter arrived to Győr after a short stint with Oltchim Vâlcea. She made it to the CL final for the first time in 2007 with Slagelse and repeated the trip in 2012 with Budućnost, when her eight goals helped to decide the second leg against her current team. She was a key player in Montenegro’s biggest achievements, when

she was the top scorer at both the London Olympics and EHF EURO in 2012 helping to secure the silver and gold respectively.

Katrine Lunde HaraldsengoalkeeperIf she is extra keen on winning the EHF Champions League, it comes to no surprise, as she knows what it feels like. In 2010, after having won the competition with Viborg for the second year in a row, she joined Győr and accomplished the same feat in her third season with Hungarian perennial champions. At the age of 33 she is adding valuable

experience to her high class in the goal, and as late as at the EHF EURO 2012 she was nominated for the All Star team.

Eduarda Amorimleft backBrazilian international arrived in Europe in 2006 first joining Kometal Skopje in FYR Macedonia and she is just five goals shy of 300 goals milestone in the European top flight. The left back transferred to Győr in 2009. The 27-year-old Amorim is part of the Brazilian national team, became three-time Pan-American champion, participated in

two Olympic Games (2008, 2012), ranked fifth at the 2011 World Championship on home court and won gold in WCh 2013 in Serbia.

Heidi Løkeline playerThe World Handball Player of 2011 is a famous daughter in a big handball family as both of her siblings are professional players and all of them are line players. She is the only player to play in both previous CL finals. In 2011 she took the title with Larvik as the CL top scorer, and in 2012 she only narrowly missed it with Győr only to achieve it one

year later. With the national team was a member of the all-star teams at the London Olympics, 2011 WCh and EHF EURO 2010 and 2012.

Adrienn Orbánright wingShe started her professional career at Váci NKSE, although her childhood club was Győr, where she eventually returned in 2009. In the same year Orbán had her first international match for the Hungarian national team, and right afterwards she was nominated for the WCh in China. After the starter at her position Jovanka Radičević left for Vardar she

is expected to share the challenging workload with a newcomer from Békéscsaba – Bernadett Bognár-Bódi.

Last season’s runners-up got the new season off to a perfect start with a dominant win over Podravka Vegeta in Round 1. The Norwegians looked to be well on their way to making it two out of two when leading by three at half-time against Vardar, but a 27:27 draw was a clear warning that Larvik were not going to have everything their own way in this group.

Three relatively straightforward victories followed, twice against Bera Bera and once more against Podravka, and qualification was confirmed. Vardar came to town on the final day and proved to be more than a match, taking two points away from Norway and meant that Larvik failed to finish first in their group for the first time since 2008.

Nevertheless, confidence will remain high in the team as long as injured players return for the beginning of the main round. After missing the majority of the last two seasons, Nora Mörk’s return to team has been invaluable, as she top scored with 35 goals.

Anja Hammerseng-Edincentre backThe 31-year-old centre back was awarded MVP at the EHF EURO 2012 after she led Norway to the silver medal. And also for her club team, Edin has proven to be extremely valuable – at orchestrating the Norwegian top team’s attacking play as well as being a dangerous shooter herself which was emphasised by her 58 goals in the European

top flight last season. In the 2013 summer she got married to her teammate Gro Hammerseng.

Linn Jørum Sullandright backThe expectations were high, when Sulland was introduced in Larvik back in 2009, when she joined from another Norwegian league team, Stabæk. Already in 2005/06 she was voted for the best player of the domestic competition and also was the top scorer. And the Norwegian international, who is 28 now, has fully met those expectations. Usually she

is using her strength in the attack only, but here the team benefits a lot from her varied shots from the right back position.

Ole Gustav GjekstadcoachThe former Norwegian international (149 caps) quit his playing career in 1996 and became coach of Larvik HK for the first time in 1998. After seven years on the bench he became sports director of the club and later-on coach of Norwegian men’s club team Drammen HK. In 2011, after Larvik had become CL winners, 44-year-old Gjekstad returned to the Larvik

bench and only narrowly missed the trophy after their defeat by Győr in the last season’s final.

Thea Mørkleft wingNora Mørk’s twin has been playing in the same team as her sister since the age of five – except for the 2009/10 season, when she played for Norwegian side Njård, while Nora was already playing in Larvik. The following year the sisters were reunited in Larvik. Thea is a technically skilled left winger with a fine variation of shots. She is coming from a

breakthrough season scoring 31 goals in the CL. Her other sister Kaja plays handball in Nordstrand.

Cecilie LegangergoalkeeperLarvik can count on a legendary duo in goal: One part is Danish veteran Lene Rantala, the other is Cecillie Leganger. Despite having only one training session with the team each week, 37-year-old Leganger is still one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Apart from a full cabinet of world championship medals and the EHF EURO title in 1998 she has also won

three titles in the CL. In 2001 she was voted for the World Handball Player of the year.

Gro Hammerseng-Edinleft backIn 2007 the left back was awarded the World Handball Player of the year and - excluding the world championship title in 2011 and the Olympic gold medal in 2012 - Hammerseng has the same cabinet of medals as Riegelhuth-Koren. Several times the 32 year old Norwegian was nominated for All Star Teams at major tournaments – and in 2011

she was a key part of Larvik’s CL winning team. In 2013 she resigned from the national team.

Isabel Blancoline playerAfter a glorious career in Danish top club Ikast/FC Midtjylland, she returned home to Norway to join Larvik in the summer of 2011. Experienced Blanco still seems far from the end of her career. In fact, the physically strong line player, who is also a highly skilled painter with several exhibitions behind her, is as crucial to her team as ever. Her father

Fernando was a Spanish football player, who played for Bran Bergen in the 70s. She spent one season in Spain playing for Ferrobus Mislata.

Linn-Kristin Riegelhuth-Korenright wingDouble Olympic champion, world champion, four time EHF EURO champion, winner of the CL in 2011 and world handball player of the year 2008 – “Linka” is one of the most successful players in the current CL season. The right wing also won the Cup Winners’ Cup with Larvik. She has played more than 200 international matches for Norway, scoring

900 goals. She is married to Norwegian international Einar Koren.

The 2012 winners seem to be enjoying last second decisions on their participation in the main round. For the second year in a row Buducnost booked their ticket only in the last round. In the direct encounter against FTC Rail Cargo Hungaria, their only contender, they needed at least one-goal victory.

For 40 minutes it looked like the game could go either way as both teams betrayed their nervousness with many naive mistakes. Only in the last 15 minutes could the full Moraca hall in Podgorica start to celebrate as Dragan Adzic’s outfit, supported by several great saves by Marta Zderic, escaped by five and more goals.

Buducnost maintained a perfect record on home court and combined with two points taken from Lublin, they finished two points below FC Midtjylland and two points above. Radmila Petrovic with 33, Milena Knezevic with 24 and the Romanian reinforcement Cristina Neagu with 23 goals were the main scoring force for Montenegrin champions.

Kinga Byzdracentre backKinga Byzdra is the third Polish player in Budućnost’s history, after Monika Marzec and Izabela Puchacz, who played in Podgorica from 2003 to 2005. Her mother Malgorzata played handball for Montex Lublin and Zagłębie Lubin. With Zagłębie Lubin she won a Polish title in 2011 and three Polish cups in 2009, 2011 and last season, when she scored

14 goals in the final. Named best player of Poland in 2012, Kinga last season scored 33 goals in six games in the EHF Cup.

Dragan AdžićcoachHe was forced to retire due to injury in 1998 and for almost a decade was an assistant to many coaches in Budućnost, waiting for a chance while working with youth teams. He became head coach in 2010 and in a short period of time, he achieved great successes, especially in 2012, winning the CL in May with Budućnost and EHF EURO in December with

Montenegro. He met his wife Timea after she came to the club as an interpreter to former coach, Hungarian Gyula Zsiga.

Majda Mehmedovićleft wingBorn in a sports family, with a mother who played handball as a goalkeeper, Majda Mehmedović’s sports destiny was already decided. She started handball in Bar at the age of 12 with her brother Musa and immediately loved it. After being signed by Budućnost and needed just two more years to get into the first team and is now

irreplaceable for both club and country. In 2012 she was a candidate for EHF Women’s Champions League young player of the season.

Camilla Dalbyright backShe is the first Dane in Budućnost’s history and has proven to be a key player. She started with handball at four, her mother played handball, and later was her coach at Spentrup IF, where Camilla’s father was president of the club. She won a title in Denmark with Randers HK in 2012 and an EHF Cup in 2010. Camilla made a debut for the Danish senior

team in October 2007 after a successful youth career and was named best national team player in 2011/2012.

Clara WolteringgoalkeeperWoltering is set for a third season at Budućnost and second as the captain. She first saw handball at the age of 5, when she went to watch her two older sisters. After seeing Clara playing with the ball, the coach of the team told her parents that the youngest Woltering must play handball. Very superstitious, for a long time she banned her

parents from watching her play, thinking it was bad luck and at one stage wore a cap on her head during matches to bring her luck.

Milena Kneževićleft backShe started playing handball with her sister Dragana and comes from a sporting family, with her brother Ivan a professional soccer player. At 2012 EHF EURO in Serbia, where Montenegro finished first, Milena was first in assists (29) and shared second place in scoring with Anita Görbicz (41 goals). Two-time Montenegrin handball player of the

year and was voted second best young player of the Women’s EHF Champions League in 2012.

Dragana Cvijićline playerSerbian national team player is facing a third season in Budućnost. Cvijić started handball at the age of 10, first as goalkeeper, but being very tall for her age, Dragana’s first coach put her at left back. She never believed she would become a line player, but it happened six years ago in Crvena zvezda and she loved the new position. The 2011/12 title with Krim

was her best season, scoring 33 goals and played through an ACL tear three months before the end of the season.

Radmila Petrović right wingPersuaded by a friend, Radmila started training handball at 12, in her home town of Nikšić, where she played for five years as a right back. When she transferred to Budućnost, in 2005, she was moved to the wing, a right decision for her, since she’s became one of the best in Europe, a strong alternative to Jovanka Radičević in Budućnost

before and now in Montenegro national team. This season Radmila has a new surname – Petrović, after getting married in July.

Budapest to host 2014 Women’s EHF FINAL4

The winning joint bid from Hungarofest, a leading event management company, and the Hungarian Handball Federation (MKSZ), will organise the final event of the Europe’s four best female club teams in close co-operation with EHF Marketing GmbH, the marketing arm of the EHF.

The two-day event will be played in the Papp Laszlo Budapest Sportarena in the capital - an arena with a capacity of 12,500 seats. The arena played host to the final weekend of the Women’s EHF European Championship in 2004 and will once again host the event in December 2014.

Semi-finals will be played on Saturday, 3 May 2014, the third place match and the final will follow on Sunday, 4 May 2014. Playing times will be confirmed later.

EHF President, Jean Brihault, said: “The Budapest bid was very impressive and we are convinced that this event will be a great success in its first year.

“Handball has a huge following in Hungary and we know that this first event will attract fans from across Europe. We’re looking forward to a fantastic atmosphere in Budapest in May.”

The awarding decision of the 2014 event to Budapest was made by the EHF Finance Delegation on behalf of the EHF Executive Committee.

Slovenia’s Ljubljana with its Stozice Arena was the other possible venue in the race for the premiere of the Women’s EHF FINAL4.
