Few had expected in September that Győr would have to hand over the Hungarian women’s crown to their domestic rivals Ferencváros.

Numerous absences took its toll and Ferencváros beat Győr in the last round of the regular season, but the defending champions still held on to home court advantage for the finals.

Győr wanted to celebrate the national title at home so they asked to switch the venue of the first game, which was duly played in Budapest, but Ambros Martin’s team lost 21:24 on penalties after a thrilling draw in the regular time. Much to their surprise the holders suddenly found themselves in need of fighting for their crown, but Ferencváros gathered momentum and won in Győr 27:25.

Having won the regular season by one point ahead of FC Midtjylland, Esbjerg went into the playoffs in a confident mood. Two one-goal wins against reigning champions Viborg in the semi-finals set up a tense final clash with Midtjylland. Despite holding a five-goal lead ten minutes before the final whistle, Midtjylland only managed to land a 23:22 win in the first leg. The final debutants from Esbjerg, though, did not manage to benefit from the narrow difference in the second leg in front of more than 3,000 spectators in the Blue Water Dokken and they had to be content with silver after a 22:22 draw.

With Larvik maintaining their almost perfect form throughout the season, the rest of the league could only have sights on a place in the final against them. Glassverket finished second in the main round and won their semi-finals against Byasen with ease. The first final proved to be a close encounter as Larvik came away with a 28:27 win before cruising to the title in the second leg.

Baia Mare finished the regular season just ahead of CSM Buchuresti after both sides lost just two matches from 26. There was no stopping the Women’s EHF Champions League Quarter-finalists in the playoffs, before they met CSM Buchuresti in the final and suffered two narrow defeats. After being granted an additional place, Baia Mare will have to make their way through qualification this season.

HC BNTU-BelAz Minsk (BLR)Belarus’ perennial champion left their rivals no chance for surprises, earning the national title for the 22nd time. Only once in the history of Belarusian handball BNTZ BelAZ failed to win gold, losing the final against Gorodnichanka in 2008.

Some of their best players leaving the club every summer to seek happiness elsewhere, does not keep the Minsk region club from collecting national trophies. The team of Konstantin Sharovarov predictably took the first place in the regular season. In the semi-finals against HC Berestie, two victories was all they needed to proceed to the next round.

After winning twice in the final, they gave their opponents HC Gomel some hope losing the third match 18:24 at home. But in the fourth game in Gomel, BNTU BelAZ showed great moral and therefore celebrated a 25:22 victory.

SERCODAK Dalfsen (NED)Dalfsen have won the fifth title in their club’s history in style, beating VOC Amsterdam in the play-off finals twice. After paving the way with a 33:26 victory on home ground, they also dominated in Amsterdam winning clearly 35:25. With five national titles, they are now the fifth most successful club in the history of Dutch women’s handball.

The team of head coach Peter Portengen were never troubled in the finals as they cruised to gold - at one stage they lead by a 13-goal difference (33:20) in the second encounter. Dalfsen have crowned their incredible season with the title after winning all 18 matches in the regular season prior to the play-offs, including two victories against eventual runners-ups VOC. In the upcoming season the team will look much different as many players such as Kelly Dulfer, Inger Smits (both VfL Oldenburg), Esther Shovel (Nantes Loire Atlantique Handball) and Myrthe Schoenaker (Füchse Berlin) will leave the club.

WHC Radnicki Kragujevac (SRB)

ZRK Radnicki Kragujevac took no prisoners in their title defence campaign, as they went on a hot streak of 21 matches without defeat in Serbian Championship. A last round slump in Novi Sad against Minaqua (34:35) did not overshadow the dominance displayed by the “Tigresses”, winning 13 of their 22 matches played by double-digits.

Young Serbian national team right back Andjela Janjusevic led the way for Radnicki, with excellent efficiency displayed when needed the most. The cup final win against the biggest rivals ZORK Jagodina (26:18) exemplified the effectiveness of a blend of youth and experience in a team coached by Aleksandar Radosavljevic.

FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria (HUN)Few had expected in September that Győr would have to hand over the Hungarian women’s crown to their domestic rivals Ferencváros. Double Women’s EHF Champions League holders Győr were hit hard by the absence of Katrine Lunde and Anita Görbicz, who were both sidelined by their pregnancy, then later by the knee injury to World Player of the Year Eduarda Amorim but Ferencváros, who failed to enter Europe’s elite club competition from the qualifiers, were still widely regarded to be only fit for the runners-up position.

Győr failed to reach the MVM EHF FINAL4 in Budapest and effectively drained their confidence. Ferencváros beat Győr in the last round of the regular season but the defending champions still held on to home court advantage for the finals. Győr wanted to celebrate the national title at home so they asked to switch the venue of the first game, which was duly played in Budapest, but Ambros Martin’s team lost on penalties after a thrilling draw (24:21). Much to their surprise the holders suddenly found themselves in need of fighting for their crown, but Ferencváros gathered momentum and won in Győr 27:25.

Ferencváros won their 12th Hungarian championship and were crowned for the first time since 2007. The Győr bound Zsuzsa Tomori kept her promise to win an important trophy with Ferencváros before she left.

A perfect season for Buducnost continued beyond the celebrations of their second Women’s EHF Champions League trophy. The departing trio Clara Woltering, Marina Rajcic and Jelena Despotovic have been granted the best possible farewell to the “Blues”, by lifting no less than three trophies this season.

Buducnost once again proved indomitable on the domestic scene defeating their affiliate Danilovgrad (27:15) before steamrolling over the high-flying Levalea 2010 (37:15) to claim the 27th title with Kinga Byzdra and Milena Knezevic in top form. Young Buducnost starlet playing for Danilovgrad, Djurdjina Jaukovic proved the reputation of one of Europe’s most promising prospects by governing Danilovgrad to the Cup final, with an eye-catching 13 goals in a tight affair against Levalea 2010 (25:24).

The enthusiastic Danilovgrad met the odds on favourites Buducnost in the final, but the defending champions did not allow any surprises, even with the rampant 19-year old Jaukovic scoring alomost at will for Danilovgrad, finishing the match with 14 goals.

Nothing changed in Norway. Once again, Larvik won every national title on offer.

After having won the Norwegian Cup already, Larvik took their 11th Norwegian championship in a row, three match days before the end of the league with a 35:21 win against Skrim Kongsberg in the Arena Larvik.

And even though the championship was already secured, Larvik did not stagger in their last three matches finishing without losing one single point in their 22 league matches. And as usual, Larvik kept on winning, coming out on top of the play-offs as well.

Resigning head coach Ole Gustav Gjekstad hands a with a lot of medals decorated team to his successor current assistant coach Tor Odvar Moen.

The 2014/2015 season was a very special one for sport fans in central Jutland. Not only did the football team of FC Midtjylland win their first Danish championship, but also the club’s handball women won three titles, the Danish cup, the Cup Winners’ Cup and the Danish championship.

Having defeated EHF Cup winners Team Tvis Holstebro clearly in the semi-finals, FC Midtjylland awaited a nail-biting thriller against Team Esbjerg in the two-legged final. Even though Midtjylland lead with five goals ten minutes before the final whistle, they only managed to land a 23:22 win in the first leg.

The final debutants from Esbjerg, though, did not manage to benefit from the narrow difference in the second leg in front of more than 3,000 spectators in the Blue Water Dokken. The team of head coach Helle Thomsen turned out to be more experienced at the end of the match, that gave them a 22:22 draw and the championship through a one goal win on aggregate.

For the third season in a row Vardar enjoyed an easy task of claiming the domestic championship title. After winning against Gjorce Petrov 46:18 in the last championship game, Vardar raised the trophy with an unblemished record of 20 wins from as many matches in the Super League.

The last season match was a farewell for two Vardar players – Julija Nikolic and Begona Fernandez.

Lacking true challenge in the league, several of the youngsters in the squad had an opportunity to wear the “red and black” shirt and contribute on the way to the title.

The biggest margin this season was achieved against ZRK Pelister where Vardar secured 42 goals difference after winning the match with result 52:10.

RK Krim Mercator secured their 21st Slovenian League title, on the wings of the 26:23 away win against runners-up RK Gen-I Zagorje on the final day, although the road to the title defence was somewhat harder than dominant Krim would have liked. Just eight days later, it was the lethal right wing Alja Koren’s 15-goal masterclass that sent “Krimovke” to defend the double, celebrating their 22nd Slovenian Cup glory, upon a 37:24 final win against ZRK Zelene Doline Zalec.

A tight affair in the penultimate round of the Slovenian championship saw RK Krim Mercator let a five-goal lead (15:10) slip in the dying minutes of the away match against the third-placed ZRK Milinotest Ajdovscina. An unexpected 28:31 defeat added suspense to the last round of the championship. Second-placed Gen-I Zagorje had an opportunity to challenge Krim’s title credentials on their home court. Zagorje kept their chances in a rollercoaster match entering the dying minutes of the game with the narrow lead, when Krim displayed greater determination and composure following Tamara Mavsar’s nine goals, to regain control of the match and finish with a 26:23 victory, that brought them their 21st league title.

A 12-year hiatus for Bucharest away from the Liga Nationala throne was ended, after CSM followed in Rapid CFR’s footsteps and earned its maiden national title. Mette Klit’s side had only two defeats in its column this season – one a 0:10 against SCM Craiova, after the coaches failed to wear their badges on the court – but had a perfect play-off, with a 2:0 win in the final against HCM Baia Mare.

Bucharest’s ambitions were highlighted last summer, as the team managed some great transfers coups, bringing Linnea Torstenson, Mayssa Pessoa, Ana Paula Rodrigues and Fernanda Franca da Silva. Sooner rather than later, the team gelled and became the favourite to win the title. Despite clear wins against HC Dunarea Braila and Corona Brasov in the first rounds of the play-offs, few expected a 2:0 win against Baia Mare in the final, but Bucharest deployed a world class defence to beat their opponents with two narrow wins, 23:22 in Bucharest and 20:17 in Baia Mare.

CSM’s ambitions are high, as the team is aiming for success in their maiden Women’s EHF Champions League participation. Therefore, Constantin Caliman, the team’s president, has already announced important transfers for the next season, such as Maria Fisker and Isabelle Gullden (both from Viborg HK) or Line Jorgensen (FC Midtjylland).

After an unbeaten record in the 2013/14 season, Thüringer HC had to fight much harder to win their fifth straight championship in Germany. Right up until the concluding stages of the championship they could feel eventual runners-up Buxtehuder SV breathing down their necks. Buxtehude beat THC in the first meeting and this defeat was the first for head coach Herbert Müller and his team in 47 Bundesliga matches.

However, a 32:26 win in the rematch gave THC the lead again and set up a final round decider against record champions HC Leipzig. A defeat would have handed cup winners Buxtehude the league title, but a clear ten-goal win (35:25) allowed the Müller brothers Herbert and Helfried (assistant coach) to celebrate their ninth German title after four with FC Nürnberg.

“To finish on top this season was the toughest task with Thüringer HC to date. We were hit by so many injuries and we were sapped of energy because of the Champions League, but in the end we managed to do it,” commented Herbert Müller.

The team coached by Denmark’s Jan Leslie caused a small revolution in Russia, putting an end to the six year reign of Dinamo Sinara - well timed as the club celebrates not just the title but also its 50-year anniversary this year.

The last and only time they won the Russian league was in 1994 when the club was still named “Rostelsmash”. Before that they became champions of the Soviet Union twice in 1990 and 1991.

During the last two decades, Rostov-Don finished second and third multiple times but constantly fell short of the absolute top. This year, though, Leslie’s team was not only successful on domestic level but also played a prominent role in Europe, reaching the EHF Cup final. In the Russian League they eliminated Universitet and Astrakhanochka on their way to the final and needed just two games in the decisive round to beat Lada Toliatti and take the trophy.

The season turned out well for Sävehof. Not only did the team reach the main round in the Women’s EHF Champions League for the second year in a row – the women from the Gothenburg-based club also won the Swedish championship for the seventh time in a row and for the 11th time in history.

Almost 7,000 spectators in the Scandinavium in Gothenburg saw Sävehof heading to decide the final against Skuru HK already in the first half, leading 19:14 at half-time. Even though Skuru managed to reduce the difference to two goals at 20:18 in the second half, no one really had a doubt about the result. Sävehof was in control of the match at any time and in the end celebrated a 33:30 win and another Swedish championship.

Left back Jenny Alm said a fine goodbye to Sävehof before joining Danish runners-up Team Esbjerg in the next season. With nine goals, she shared the status as top scorer of the match with Emma Hawia Svensson from Skuru.

No team in Europe have even close to the same winning record as Hypo Niederösterreich. For the 39th time the team of Ferenc Kovacs took the Austrian title and they faced their own youth team in the final series of the WHA Austria, beating their club mates twice clearly by 45:25 and 35:18. Hypo also won the Austrian cup with a 35:10 win over Dornbirn.

Despite losing some top players (mainly from Brazil) before the start of the season, the Austrian title was never out of reach, but on international level Hypo missed out on the qualification for the EHF Women’s Champions League main round and was later eliminated from the Cup Winners’ Cup by eventual finalists Fleury from France.

At the domestic level, Hypo won all 22 matches of the regular league season, finishing this part with an incredible goal difference of plus 375, which means that they won each match by an average of 17 goals.

HC Podravka Vegeta (CRO)

Podravka Vegeta have returned the Croatian champions trophy to Koprivnica after one season away. Lokomotiva Zagreb managed to turn the tables last term and take the champions title, sending Podravka to the Women’s EHF Champions League qualification.

There were no surprises this time around for the team coached by Goran Mrdjen, as Podravka performed admirably throughout the season, lifting both the league, as well as the domestic cup trophy to get straight back to their winning ways.

The 32:24 Cup final win against Lokomotiva was an ideal opportunity for revenge, as the last season’s champion had problems to maintain consistency throughout the season, having finished fourth – behind both RK Zamet and ZRK Zelina.

Talented line player, 22-year old Andrea Covic, will take this wonderful achievement to bid farewell to her childhood team, after adding the double to her already impressive resume with the team from Koprivnica.

With their first French league title in club history, Fleury Loiret Handball secure their spot in next season’s Women’s EHF Champions League.

Their path to success was not an easy one though. After finishing first in the regular season, the team of head coach Fred Bougeant had to face tough opponents, meeting Nîmes in the semi-final and Issy-Paris in the final.

Thanks to stellar performances from the likes of Spanish national team players Darly Zoqbi de Paula between the posts and Alexandrina Barbosa at left back, Fleury added a second trophy to their record after winning the French cup last season.

It was one of the most interesting seasons in the last 10 years of the PGNiG Women’s Superleague. For the 18th time in 22 seasons the league title was won by MKS Selgros Lublin, who beat Vistal Gdynia 3:1 in the final series. Third place went Challenge Cup finalist Pogon Baltica Szczecin ahead of Start Elblag and KGHM Metraco Zaglebie Lubin, who were surprisingly out of contention for the medals this season.

The champions from Lublin qualified for the final after a 2:0 quarter-final win against KPR Jelenia Gora and surprisingly cruising past Pogon Baltica Szczecin 3:0.

The final games were tense, but Lublin took the first two victories at home (26:25, 27:22). The third game - a real handball thriller with two extra-times and penalties went Vistal’s way (43:42). Everything was decided in the fourth encounter, in which MKS Selgros won 33:27.
