Regional Coordinator’s CornerWe have now survived our first snow of the season. Wow! Snow in October! What a surprise!

Speaking of surprises, there will be a few at the December 3rd Holiday Party, so come, bring a friend and have an afternoon of fun. There will be more about that later in the Tattler.

Next year, we have quite a few fun surprises coming our way. We have another NAME Day in October, and I have seen the unofficial prototype. It is awesome. We have Maryland State Day’s Corner Store, which is so much fun to plan and work on. I know that you will want to be a part of that action!!! A surprise Yard Sale will be taking place in both Maryland and Virginia, so plan now to attend both (more information will be forthcoming).

As we near the close of 2011 and approach a New Year, we reflect on our friends in the miniature world who have left us and also for those friends with “mini-miniaturists” who made their first appearance this year (babies and grandbabies are such a blessing). We are thankful for new mini friends as well as those we think of as more than friends. Thanksgiving this year is truly a time to feel blessed by all that we have and can do. Enjoy the time with your families and friends.

We wish to encourage each person to invite a special friend to become part of our wonderful group – both on a local and national level. NAME and our clubs are a great way to share our talents and love of miniatures with others. We have new clubs forming in both Maryland and Virginia, and we are working on getting our part of West Virginia more involved.

As Thanksgiving and Christmas approach and another year ends, I want to wish each and every one of you a blessed and family-filled Holiday Season.

May your heart be richly blessed during this wonderful time of year.

God Bless!

… From the Northern VA State Reps…

Virginia was fortunate enough to have Two NAME Day locations. Please look for the articles further in newsletter.

Special thanks to Molly Cromwell for inviting us to have a NAME Table & Exhibits. Exhibits came from several local area miniaturists. There was even a section dedicated to Halloween. The Children’s program was a lot fun. What a great way to plant a seed for future miniaturists! Further in this newsletter you will find an article on our Children’s program with photos.

Virginia began this summer by forming the 2013 Virginia State Day Committee. We are fortunate to have more than a dozen talented miniaturists from Virginia to come forward and volunteer. The

committee members are spread throughout Virginia. Therefore, the committee meetings are being held outside of Richmond. Please keep a watch for more information as time goes on. Look for “Save the Date Flyer” in this newsletter.

As George & I are coming close to completing our first year as your Northern Virginia State Representatives, we would like to thank everyone for all their help and continued support. Annette Hammond was so helpful in getting us started, with many boxes of varied items to prepare us for what lies ahead. One such example that comes to mind is a box with pictures and items from previous children’s programs! Look for the pictures further in newsletter to see what the children did this year.

Have a Happy & Safe Holiday Season,

George & Donna

And from your MD State Rep…

Well it looks like NAME has another hit on its hands! The NAME Day event at our venue was a mini success. We had 44 participants at our new favorite go-to place, Bullock’s Family Restaurant in Westminster (convenient, lots of room, good food and lots of parking). There were lots of smiling happy miniaturists, and it is quite obvious that we enjoy each other’s company. Many people completed or nearly completed their projects, and were talking about how to use them in a scene. We offered 4 scales, one inch, half inch scale, quarter inch scale and 144th scale (thank you, Carol Ann of ‘Laser Me This’ and Susan Karatjas of SDK Miniatures).

We had some great tote bag favors (thank you everyone) and some great exhibits. (Helen’s baby changing table was such a novel idea). Gerry showed us her 144th scale kitchen for her completed work table. It was quite amazing. Wonder what NAME’s got in mind for next year.

Speaking of events and happy miniaturists, we are having our Holiday Party at Bullock’s this year. It is such a great place for this event. They will cater our meal and, again, there is lots of room and lots of easy parking. We have changed our program a bit this year. Last year, we gave certificates to several people for silly things they did in pursuit of miniatures. It was fun and we would like to do so again this year.

If you have a funny story about someone in pursuit of miniatures who will be attending the party, please submit the information to Olivia Wall. A panel of judges will select the most “deserving” person(s) to receive the certificates. The judges will not know who the person is. Identifying information will be deleted before the judges receive the nominations. And please do not forget to bring something for the Shepherd’s Staff (www.shepstaff.org). They have specifically suggested the following items:

1. Used books and magazines2. Blankets3. Towels and bath soap4. Laundry soap and bleach5. Personal hygiene items6. Cleaning supplies, baking soda, vinegar, ammonia7. Baby essentials, diapers

They were very appreciative of our donations last year.

I hope to see you at the Holiday Party, but if I do not, have a Blessed Holiday Season and a Great New Year.

…And Highlights from the NAME Board…Starting with the Charlotte convention, the registration forms have been updated to allow submission of the registration forms starting 30 days prior to the opening day for registration. Those forms are then treated as “first day postmarks.”

A shopping cart has been added to the NAME website for review and testing only. Once we are satisfied that it does what we need, Shannon Moore will install this on the NAME website as a permanent feature to make paying dues, etc., easier.

We will be doing a Hallmark Ornament contest next year. Look for details in a future Gazette/website/NAME Blog. And don’t pack your ornaments away where you can’t find them! This will be an individual contest rather than a club competition.

“Hannah’s House”(A combined project of MEOW and The Friday Conundrums)

The MEOW Club and The Friday Conundrums Club of Westminster recently joined efforts to refurbish a dollhouse for a child in need. There was an article in a recent issue of The Carroll County Times about a condition known as Dravet Syndrome. It didn’t take long before the club members discovered a 9-year-old child and decided to make her the recipient of the newly outfitted dollhouse.

The following is a note from her mother…

“I would like to thank everyone for the thoughtfulness and care that you have donated to Hannah with the gift of the beautiful dollhouse.  It has been so touching….

Hannah has enjoyed the doll house so much this week and when someone comes into our house, she wants to show them "Hannah's House."  The dollhouse has really occupied her and when she comes home from school, she spends time rearranging the rooms.  It has definitely been a big hit with her.  I have attached a few pictures for you to share. Please extend my thankfulness to those that helped design Hannah's House.  God bless each of you and Hannah sends hugs to all.  Love, Lisa.”

INCH BY INCH CLUB MOUNTS ENCORE DISPLAY AT SENIOR CENTER

By Dayle Dawes ~ Photos by Ramsey Alexander

The Inch by Inch Miniatures Club of Annapolis (IBI) celebrated National Dollhouse and Miniatures Month by mounting an eagerly-anticipated (and very well received) encore display in the foyer of the busy Arnold (Maryland) Senior Center.

It is always a pleasure to “share our treasures” and expose non-miniaturists to our wonderful obsession, and this exhibition certainly had its own rewards. Senior Center members were intrigued with the ingenuity and level of detail of the display items, and expressed amazement that miniature homes and vignettes could include so many details and interesting objects. Last year’s display inspired several expressions of interest in inviting club members into the center to teach some classes, and the 2011 presentation offered the Center’s clients a sign-up sheet to test the waters.

The “gems” of our 2011 display, “Antiques in Miniatures,” included five “Gentleman’s Libraries” from a class taught by Carol Trice and created by IBI members Ramsey Alexander, Mary Byrne, Peggy Christman, Barbara Dugan and Sarita Speros. Four are housed in antique sewing machine drawers, and Peggy’s is in an enchanting little antique clock case.

Page 6: Club Corner Tattler - Winter 2011.doc  · Web viewAttendees completed the butcher block companion piece to the 2010 hutch in their choice of scales, and were able to top it off with

Finished in both 1:12” and 1:24” scales, these wonderful rooms are decorated in a variety of styles – each as unique as its maker. The libraries do share one common feature – shelves of books hand-made by their creators! This time-consuming, painstaking process involved cutting and beveling dozens of tiny chunks of basswood into individual “books” and gluing on covers cut from “printies.” Most of the libraries hold at least 80 books, and cleverly-mounted mirrors on the second floor create the illusion that the rooms are wider and hold even more books.

These wonderful pieces are perfect examples of how several people tackle the same project with unique results, and demonstrate the level of complexity and expertise required by the club’s projects.

Other exhibit features included Sarita Speros’ charming Victorian-era Kitchen mounted in a fabulous little glass-topped biscuit tin, Mary Byrne’s antique hand-made wooden dollhouse and its Tootsie Toy and Schoenhut furnishings, and Barbara Dugan’s 1930’s-era wood and lithograph soda fountain. Adding interest and variety to the display were Barbara Dugan’s antique 1:12” scale “customer” and “soda jerk” dolls, her three tiny antique bisque dolls, and a two-sided room box. “The Cluttered Closet” antiques shop is from the collection of Dayle Dawes.

FAME Club(Fairfax Association of Miniature Enthusiasts)

After a hiatus of two years, our club FAME decided it was time to again display some of our Miniatures at the Great Falls Library. The display area consists of moveable glass shelves. Luckily, George got to move and remove and reinstall them several times. Then came the time of moving the pieces around & around & up & down. Results appear below.

Mini Wonder Workers

The Mini Wonder Workers club of Damascus MD had a very successful three-month run of their exhibit held at The Damascus Heritage Society Museum, from August 3 through October 26. The club’s six members exhibited work in a variety of scales and provided information about NAME and upcoming shows and events

in Region E-1. The Museum was only open two afternoons each week, Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon to 5:00 PM, and the display drew close to 700 viewers.

The club also offered six free miniature workshop days (two Saturdays in each of the three months). Workshop participants made plates from soda bottle caps, Shrinky Dink bowls, flower pots of impatiens, Model Magic pies and breads, pompom animals, chalkboard easels, topiaries, free-standing bird houses, cat scratching posts, Fun Foam clowns, ghost vignettes and Michaels’ hutches decorated for Halloween and filled with ghostly items.

Club President Sue Ketchum curated the exhibit and organized the events. Sue

Ann and Region E-1’s Program Chair, Nancy Chalmers, designed and taught the Saturday workshops. Club members Linda Bell and Lynda Schrack helped teach the workshops, and the four of them donated all of the supplies for the projects.

In addition, Sue Ann, assisted by Linda Bell, provided a workshop for a Girl Scout troop one Friday evening. They made a 1”-scale table complete with Girl Scout cookie boxes, an order form, and a table cloth with paper Girl Scout logos. Sue Ann made a mini pencil and a plate of Samoa cookies for each of the girls. The 12 girls had a wonderful time. Sue Ann also provided private tours to a few miniaturists groups, a Brownie troop, a Girl Scout troop, the Damascus Y-Women, and the Montgomery Methodist Church Women’s Group.

The Mini Wonder Workers left a sign-up sheet at the Museum for people interested in starting a new club in the area. There were over 30 names on the list, 9 of which are children. The Mini Wonder Worker’s plan is to mentor the group for about a year to assist them with meetings, and offer kits as well as project ideas.

The Damascus Heritage Society was so impressed with miniatures that they asked the Mini Wonder Workers to make a few miniature scenes in tea cups as a fund raiser for their annual tea to be held in February.

Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts (VME) Kick-off Meeting and Fun DayBy Kelly Caprio

Ms. Sydnie Wagner conducted a “Mini Seaside Spectacular” weekend for the Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts (VME) Club on September 9-10. The VME’s kick-off meeting for the new club year was especially exciting for the group because Ms. Wagner created and taught a unique project designed exclusively for the members of VME. The project is a 1/4-inch scale beach scene encased in a glass dome. Details included a little girl making a sand castle along the ocean shore, egrets standing in tall grass in the background, and a worn bench with piles of seashells on and around it. Extra props were offered for purchase, such as additional people, various breeds of dogs, seagulls, and additional egrets. Members learned a technique for making the tall grass and creating sand dunes using caulk and sand.

Ms. Wagner has been creating miniatures for 32 years and is the author of the popular FIMO instruction book, “Petite Eats & Mini Treats.” She’s been a member of NAME since 1988 and was Chairman of the 1995 National, “A Fair to Remember,” held in 1995. Ms. Wagner is well known for her creativity and generosity. She frequently donates miniatures & scenes to charities such as Public Television and NAME as well provides door prizes and houseparty helpers for individual clubs and national events.

VME has some exciting activities and projects planned for the upcoming year. We plan work on a 1/2- inch scale project created from a wood CD case shaped like a house and to complete a Hofco dollhouse provided by Ms. Jan Griffith that will be donated to a charity dedicated to preventing child abuse.   The VME is also coordinating a Christmas Miniature exhibit at the Violet Bank Museum in Colonial Heights, VA.  The exhibit will be open to visitors Monday, November 28, through Friday, January 6, and will showcase miniature creations provided by local miniaturists.

Mt. Vernon Miniatures ClubVisits Local Retirement Community

Residents of the Paul Spring Retirement Community in Alexandria, VA were lined up in the hallway eagerly waiting to see the miniature display that the Mt. Vernon Miniatures Club members brought to their facility. Once the doors opened, there was a rush of walkers, canes, and wheelchairs and lots of oohs and aahs as the residents gazed at the many tiny scenes and chatted with the club members. More than 35 enthusiastic residents, as well as staff members and visitors, viewed the exhibit.

Organized by club member Jane Schwarz, the display covered three long tables and included miniatures in three scales - 1:12, 1:24, and 1:48. There were roomboxes depicting a beauty parlor and doctor’s office,

made by club member Sharon Frazer. Jane Schwarz brought many charming detailed roomboxes and scenes. There were several Nuremburg Christmas Market stalls decorated by club members, and Club President Laurie Sisson brought the roombox “Vincent’s Room,” depicting artist Vincent Van Gough’s famous painting that Laurie taught to children at a Smithsonian Museum workshop. Club member Donna Lulchuk shared a charming Christmas-themed roombox and the Holland centerpiece that she made for the NAME “Far Away Places” Houseparty in Reston, VA. Mary Paris brought some of her club projects, including a scene in a tea cup and one in a maple syrup tin.

A very special treat for the club members was meeting 97-year-old Paul Spring resident Ruth Bruder, who has been a miniaturist since the 1950’s. She invited the club members to visit her charming one-bedroom apartment where she has an amazing collection of miniatures from the 1960s on display.

Southern Virginia NAME Day By Kelly Caprio

The Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts (VME) Club from Richmond, VA hosted the NAME Day event at the Ridge Baptist Church. Members from the Peninsula Heritage Club also attended the event, so both clubs had “double” the fun! Attendees completed the butcher block companion piece to the 2010 hutch in their choice of scales, and were able to top it off with numerous tote bag items provided by club members. And of course, all attendees received the official NAME Day pin as a remembrance of the event.

Talented members from both clubs made a variety of mini gifts that filled up gift tote bags for all participants. Tote bag items included a vegetable platter, a turkey w/platter, a loaf of bread, serving bowls, a clock birdhouse kit, a cookbook kit, a flower in a vase, a Tupperware bowl, planters, crocheted doilies, a cutting board & matching rolling pin, a pie, pumpkins, 2 tea towels and a matching kitchen sign. It felt like an early Christmas!

Muela, Betty Caprio, Cindy Lucas, Dot Hubbard, & Shirley Wilson.

In addition to the tote bag items given to all attendees, members from both clubs donated wrapped gifts for door prizes. There were so many door prizes that winners were announced almost every 30 minutes, and many people won two or three prizes each!

VME Vice President Cindy Lucas brought a Halloween scene to display and created a game that required attendees to guess the number of pumpkins in the scene. Unbelievably, Jerrie Ferris guessed the exact number at 289, and Susan Muela’s came in a close second with an estimate of 288! Now these folks have a good eye for minis!

Members from both clubs contributed food for a pot-luck luncheon, and I am here to testify that there was nothing miniature or small about the quantity, quality, or variety of delicious food available for our enjoyment.

VME has plans to hold a contest among its members to determine the most creative use of the NAME Day hutch and table. The winner will be notified at the June 2012 meeting. The culmination of the 2011 NAME Day event left all participants eager for more “mini fun” and looking forward to the next national NAME Special Event.

A big thank you is due to Carol House, Pris Parker, and Susan Muela, for all of their efforts in making the 2011 NAME Day such a great success. Also a special thanks to Carol Anne Frost for cutting the butcher block tables.

NAME Day inNorthern Virginia

By Mary Paris

The Mount Vernon Miniatures Club hosted the 2011 NAME Day

in Alexandria, Virginia, which was a big success thanks to great

organization by club members Donna Lulchuk and George Pendergraph. Members and

guests from other clubs assembled the NAME Day

creativity center in three sizes: 1”, 1/2”, and 1/4.” Donna Lulchuk brought an amazing 144-scale creativity center that everyone

had to view under a magnifying glass.

Special thanks go to club member Donna Edwards who rewrote the directions for assembling the kits

so that they were clear and straightforward. Especially helpful were paper templates

developed by Donna E., where all the kit parts were laid out and

clearly labeled before assembly. Everyone thought this is a great

technique to use before assembling

all kits.

Club members brought wonderful creative tote bag favors to

exchange. It was a fun event enjoyed by all.

Maryland’s NAME Day

The Maryland E-1 team has found the perfect spot for their gatherings… Bullock’s Family Restaurant in Westminster. There’s plenty of space, excellent food, and good lighting. What more could a miniaturist want?!! And what a day we had! A big thank you to the planning committee and to those who prepared the wonderful totebag favors. And a special note to thanks to Carol Ann Frost who cut all of those kits!

Everyone was so enthusiastic, in fact, that they all agreed they wanted to do it again next year!!!

Children’s program for Molly Cromwell’s Tysons Show15

Page 16: Club Corner Tattler - Winter 2011.doc  · Web viewAttendees completed the butcher block companion piece to the 2010 hutch in their choice of scales, and were able to top it off with

The children’s program was very well received by both the children and their parents. They worked on a park scene, with all the little pieces needing to be painted and glued to the base. They used clay to make little balls, and some decided to make other things they wanted, like turtles, to place in their scenes.

The best part was watching the kids paint. They painted everything, including themselves. One little girl would get paint on her hands and arms and call for “Mr. George” to clean it off before she could continue. Needless to say we had as much fun as the kids did. The kids came up their own ideas on how to place everything.

A special thank you to Annette Hammond for having enough stuff to get us started on the program… and another special thanks to Molly Cromwell for providing the space for the program.

Maryland Holiday Party 2011Your Maryland Holiday Party Committee is looking forward to celebrating the season with you at our 6th Annual Holiday Party.  It will be held on December 3rd at Bullocks’ in Westminster, from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM.  If you have never attended one of these events you are missing a lot of fun.  Our theme this year is “Holiday Traditions.”  The day will be filled with many events, including lunch, exhibits, a chance to win a centerpiece and, most importantly, a chance to visit with our friends from other clubs.  The cost is $50.00 for non-NAME members and $40.00 for NAME members.  We will have seating for 75 guests.  Information is posted on our Region E-1 Web site. Again this year, we are taking donations for items that will be given to Shepherd’s Staff, located in Westminster.
