ROTARY DISTRICT 5000, Hawaii Awards Submissions Form 2014-2015 INTERNATIONAL SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS Our Club once again had an extensive and thoroughly rewarding International Service Program. A common focus for this year’s international projects and activities was to engage Rotarians across the Globe in order to change the lives of those in need in different countries around the world, as well as foster continuing partnerships to ensure sustainability of initiated and ongoing programs. GLOBAL GRANTS- Our Club participated in THREE Global Grants this Rotary year 1. Romania Rotoplast: One of the largest and most complex grants in our District this year is our Club’s

Volunteer Training Team Grant (Global Grant 1419846: Professional training for the creation of the first craniofacial center in Eastern Europe—partnering with Rotaplast). This grant sets a record for District 5000 Rotary Clubs involvement, with 25 Clubs involved for more than $20,000 in Club cash contributions. This resulted in a total District Designated Funds contribution of nearly $60,000 (TTF budgeted funds + Club District level matching). Its total budget is $157,616, including $72,500 of World Fund matching. This grant breaks new ground in many ways. For one thing, it follows up on one of the first grants from our District to take place in Eastern Europe (Romania, Matching Grant 89681). Since the grant is over $50,000, it required additional review by an Area of Focus Manager—the grant identifies Disease Prevention and Treatment and Maternal and Child Health as Areas of Focus. It also requires Memoranda of Understanding from Rotaplast, two US university hospitals, and the hospital in Romania. Of course, it also involves identifying medical teams, travel itineraries, and shipment of medical equipment. One of our members, Dr. Dan Mirarui, has visited the Romania site and Clubs several times throughout the planning phases for this grant and will lead the training teams for the next three years.

2. Mission for Vision in Sri Lanka is a Global Grant run entirely by the Club and our long time partners in Sri Lanka the Rotary Club of Kandy and Districts, funded a Mission for Vision in Rural Sri Lanka. Our Club contributed $3,500, which was matched by D5000. Total cash contributions (including Kandy) were $4,503), while DDF from all three District reached $13,500, with a World Fund match of $16,751 and a total budget of $36,754. Interestingly, the contributors also included the Avoidable Blindness Donor Advised Fund, which is the endowment fund of the Rotarian Action Group for Blindness Prevention.

3. Global Scholar primary sponsor. One of D5000’s Global Scholar grants this year was led by our Rotary Club. This grant supports Hoyoon Jung from District 3650, who will be a Peace Scholar at the University of Hawaii. This is an outright grant from the PDGs endowment fund for $30,000.

DISTRICT GRANTS- Our Club participated in TWO International District Grants this Rotary ear 1. South African School Toilet Block: Mazzieri Primary School on the outskirts of Luanshya- Installed a

toilet block at a girl’s school to provide the required sanitation facilities and allow the school to operate and changes the lives of the girls, their families, and the community at large.

2. Philippines Emergency tsunami/earthquake relief. Provided galvanized iron roofing to 34 families whose homes suffered severe damage during the recent typhoon in the Philippines. This grant restored saety and security to the families and community to restore their lives back to normalcy.

Fifty (50) people from Honolulu, including 18 club members, traveled to Cambodia to assist in building 6 new classrooms and a 10-room teacher dormitory at Bayon Junior High School in rural Angkor Krau, 20 minutes outside of Siem Reap. Our Club facilitated the entire project cost of US$180,000 and the individual participants paid approximately $120,000 more in travel, lodging and food expenses. The participants, 20 men and 30 women, ranged from 13 to 92 years of age, and included 13 students.
