Message from the DG. Don writes, The breaking news over the last week is that our District 9670 may be up for some
boundary changes. It is all about evening up the number of Rotarians in districts
around the world without having to increase the number of districts. There are cur-
rently 531 districts. Our district has 49 clubs and 1178 members registered with Rotary International.
There are four districts smaller than us in Australia and all have been asked to submit
reasons why there should not be some combining of districts so that each has well
over 1200 members. There are some very large districts in the world including one I
know of managed by a District Governor in Egypt who has 135 clubs and over 4000
members in 6 different countries. Rotary International is saying that if districts like
that are to be made more manageable then smaller districts will need to amalgamate.
Their argument for not increasing the number of districts is to keep costs down as
more districts mean more expenses and we all pay for that in our annual subscrip-
tions.
Along with DGE Janette Jackson and DGN Greg Bowen and others I will be working
very hard over the next few months on meetings with other districts and on submis-
sions to RI to get the best deal with least disruption for our district. I will keep you
informed and would also welcome input and comment at any time. I have been attending The Zone 8 Rotary Institute in Perth along with many other
leaders and past leaders of this and other districts. It is a little like a district confer-
ence for all of Australia and a great tool for catching up with the latest developments
in the Rotary world. International President Ray Klinginsmith was present for a whole
week joining in the social events and presenting many inspirational speeches as he
asks us to look at ways we can improve the image of our clubs.
Many thanks to those clubs who submitted nominations for Women of Outstanding
Achievement. The panel will soon announce the name of the person to represent this
district at the dinner and presentation in Sydney in March. Rotarians and friends are
also invited to attend that dinner to support our nomination. More details in January
newsletter. Club presidents have been provided with information for the International Convention
in New Orleans next May. Seven members from this district have already registered.

17 December 2010 Dear Governor and Rotary Leader: You may be aware that in Cape Town at the beginning of February 2011 District 9350 will be hosting an event which Presi-
dent Ray Klinginsmith has personally masterminded called Ray’s Rotary Reunions. What began as a reunion for all past
University of Cape Town Ambassadorial Scholars has developed into a three-day gathering including any Rotarian who
wishes to attend. Please see the Web site: http://raysrotaryreunions.weebly.com. The first day will still remain as a university alumni reunion, however the second and third days will be for general alumni
and any other Rotarians interested in discovering projects and partnering with clubs in Africa. As part of the gathering there
will be a project expo at which clubs will present projects that they are about to embark on, or have already started, and seek
partners to help in carrying them out. Interested Rotary clubs may still register for this. During the two days for general alumni and Rotarians the gathering will be addressed by eminent speakers. Scheduled to
speak are Rotarians such as RI President Ray himself and Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. Other notable speak-
ers include former South African President and Nobel Peace Laureate F. W. de Klerk, South African Minster of Finance
Pravin Gordhan, Rotary Foundation alumna and Constitutional Court Judge Katherine O’Regan, and Ambassadorial Scholar
alumnus and South African diplomat Francis Moloi. We would like to have as many interested Rotarians as possible participate. To this end we would ask you to forward this
message, through your assistant governors or by other means, to all club presidents. There may be a club with some Rotari-
ans who would like to become involved in a project in Africa, or Rotarians who would like to attend this event. I might add that Cape Town is a favoured destination for travellers from all over the world, from nearby big game parks to
an unsurpassed wine country. Ray's Rotary Reunions promises to be a wonderful gathering in a beautiful city, full of Rotari-
ans from around the world for the purpose of furthering the aims of Rotary. So we ask you as a matter of urgency – there is

Next May 22-25 an estimated 20,000 Rotarians from around the world will descend on the Bayou State of Louisiana to celebrate the 2011 Rotary
International Convention in New Orleans. It will be FIVE years before another Rotary International convention will be held in the United States.
This is an opportunity to experience the excitement of the world of Rotary and to enjoy an area of the United States rich with history and sites that
welcome the entire family.
Attending a Rotary International Convention can be a life changing experience. This convention is going to be in an area of the United States with
a most distinctive personality. New Orleans with its French-Cajun flavor in the food, music and architecture is unlike any other city in the United
States. Experience the charm of the French Quarter, the aroma of café au lait et beignets at Care du Monde on Jackson Square, Spanish moss
hanging from the trees and jazz and blues music playing somewhere New Orleans around the clock. And don’t forget the restaurants of world

.From the Editor’s Keyboard Welcome to the 6th (December) edition of the District Governor's Newsletter for 2010—2011. Our DG Don Stephens reports that he has been very well travelled indeed. He has just returned from Perth and reports on the latest news from the Rotary Institute. PDG Greg’s wife Lorraine Bevan has included a wonderful article on the activities of the MERV van in western NSW and reports of
the results of the van’s visits to some very isolated parts of the state.

District Governor's Wife's Project: MERV
What an incredible way to serve the community: a rare opportunity to save another human’s life.
MERV, The Men’s Educational Rural Van commenced its trek around Western NSW on Monday September 20 with a visit to
Cobar where Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Cobar hosted the opening of the project. Lorraine’s District Governor’s Wife’s pro-
ject had finally come to fruition.
Past Assistant Governor Peter English had been the lynch pin in the organization of the project and had been working for months to
carry out all the preliminary work necessary to get MERV on the trail. This covered the organization of the Van from GWHAS in
Mudgee where PP Joy Adams was so helpful in taking steps to make the van available. Male Nurse Andrew Whale was another
exceptional resource in the planning process.
This was followed by organizing nurses in every location to be available each day to facilitate the van. Once the van was organized,
Peter started a comprehensive publicity campaign where he canvassed the local newspapers in every town MERV would visit, and
obtained comprehensive coverage on the ABC Radio in the regions. This was a mammoth task which he carried out with distinction.
He also organized an Interview on ABC Radio with himself and PDG Tony Mackenzie to start the ball rolling.
Past District Governor Tony Mackenzie was integral in the project as he offered to tow the Van from Center to Center over the com-
plete two week period. Tony’s efforts were exemplary in this area as he not only couriered the van over long distances but he was
there every day to oversee where necessary to ensure all operated smoothly. A truly magnificent contribution.
The project ran over two weeks and covered eight regional locations.

Males in any location are very hesitant to visit the Doctor. The farmers in the west are no exception. MERV supplied those gentle-
men an opportunity to visit the van and discuss their medical situation and receive advise on any medical need. Almost 300 people
visited MERV over the two week period and the most significant factor was that 6 people were taken immediately to hospital as
they were unaware of their very serious state of health. In other words, visiting MERV saved their lives. There are six families who
will have their father at the lunch table on Christmas day, six groups of grandchildren will have their poppy pulling their legs on
Christmas eve, but without MERV this would not have been the case. Of the other people who attended the van, each of them re-
ceived excellent advice and guidance which would allow them to lead a healthier life.
Patients are given a comprehensive examination with checks carried out on Blood Pressure, Sugar levels, Cholesterol levels, along
with a general consultation on smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep patterns and exercise. Information was freely available on a
host of other health related topics.
Through the generosity of Rotary clubs of District 9670, Lorraine was able to raise
over $13,000 which has more than covered the cost of the project and now allows for
a residual amount. This amount will be used to ensure that MERV will be on the road
again next year, saving people’s lives and improving the health and wellbeing of men
in the far western regions.
