We regularly schedule a time when individual club members discuss their business and the contribution their company makes to our community. We also have a comprehensive list of major and small employers in the region who speak at our meetings to keep us informed and to gather feedback. Among interesting recent speakers have been Queens’ Healthcare, Kalaeloa Partners LLP and Monsanto. We take tours to acquaint members with a range of vocational experiences. This week, our club meeting will be at the newly opened Kapolei Fire Station, to learn about the lives and challenges our firefighters face. In addition, we work with and recognize non-Rotarian community members for their service. On March 31st, the day this narrative was completed, we awarded a service plaque to Dr. Nancy Chen of Kapolei Eye Care for her continued support of our Keiki Vision program through the years. Our club remains committed to promoting local businesses, to establishing an effective business networking system to encourage local businesses to participate and to support our educational events, and also to ensure our members are supportive of local businesses.

Our Vocational Service program is part of our membership development strategy, and will continue to be vital going forward. It centers on the Vocational Minutes model, with club members given 10-minute slots at meetings to promote their businesses or professions and a table to display brochures, flyers, business cards, etc. Many of our members have retired from jobs in high levels of mainland companies, or from their own small businesses. Others are developing small business on Maui, or working as independent contractors in retail or real estate. --Kihei Safeway, at the Pi’ilani Shopping Center, hosts our club for August school supply drives and food drives for Rotary Gives Thanks during the holidays and Rotarians at Work Day in the spring. They also run their own cash register program for the Maui Food Bank at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and host a large number of clubs and nonprofits fundraising at their entrance. We plan to award them a Community Service Star Award for their commitment to supporting community service. --Mike O’Dwyer is the owner of Mulligan’s on the Blue, which hosts our club meetings and fundraisers. His support for Hale Kau Kau (a kitchen for the homeless), Hospice Maui, and many other NPs is outstanding, and we plan to award him a Community Service Star Award as well. --Kihei Youth Center runs a micro-enterprise program that trains junior high and high school students in small business planning, administration, and marketing, and also runs Kids’ Kitchen, a Maui Food Bank program. We support these programs with grants for equipment (one of our DGs provided a new refrigerator for their certified kitchen) and mentoring programs run by member volunteers. We also award a KYC Merit Scholarship for outstanding KYC students bound for college or technical training. --Our long-term strategy for membership development has a strong vocational service element. We are looking to recruit younger, more active members. The social media “crowd” on Maui is growing exponentially—as mentioned above, social media strategy is the top priority of small business owners and independent contractors in real estate and tourism. Leveraging the involvement of our members who are already part of this movement provides an exciting opportunity to recruit new members who are working in some of the most creative new areas of business, while at the same time exposing our existing members to events occurring in the community—such as TEDx Maui, business brainstormers, small business meetups, etc. 4th Friday Kihei parties, where we run a booth promoting Rotary and also fundraising with coffee, tea, and chocolate sales, is a huge opportunity to meet up with small business owners and creative leaders in the South Maui community. --One of our District Grant projects will supply a digital bus to the Kihei Charter School, and we are working toward chartering a new Interact Club at the school. We are now planning a project with the School and the South Maui Sustainability Group to build experimental gardens (hydroponic, aquaponics) on the new school campus.

• Vocational/classification presentations by Rotarians in our club, both old and new. This includes their vocation, family, where they grew up, interests and favorite things to do.

• During Vocational Service Month, every meeting had a ‘Vocational Moment’ in which the chairperson focused on an aspect of this Avenue of Service

• Promoted 4-Way Test – Not only do we have stickers in our dictionaries with the 4-way test that are given to all 3rd graders in our local community every year, we also conducted a special program dedicated to the 4-way test. Moreover, during the scholarship selection for the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation awards, we asked students what they their thoughts were on the 4-way test.

• Vocational tours of club members’ businesses – We had two off-site vocational meetings that had high attendance.

o One was at a local automobile dealer, where one member works. We toured the same and learned how the same operated.

o The second one was at a local shopping center where our member is the CEO. We got a behind the scenes tour and learned what is planned to enhance the center and the services it businesses provide. Lunch was catered by the member’s business at the mall.

• Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions – This declaration was presented at a club meeting during Vocational Service Month, and we discussed its meaning and what we can do to enhance our membership to all the other vocations in our community.

• The will award its Vocational Award of Professional Excellence to a worthy member of the community; focusing on their outstanding personal and professional achievements, high ethical standards, passion and commitment to our community, and their support of the Rotary concept of Service Above Self. A meeting will be dedicated to presenting the award and honoring the recipient and the club will sponsor the lunch cost of six of the recipient’s invited friends/business associates to take place in the award presentation.

• will then provide a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior in the recipient’s name. The vocational award winner will be part of the selection process.

District 5000, Hawaii AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM 2013-2014

Vocational Service Narrative This year we had 3 quarterly off-site meetings visiting members’ businesses. These were held in lieu of our weekly meeting on the months with 3 Wednesdays. The first off-site meeting was at Paradise Animal Clinic and Window Trends, both in the same complex. This was an evening event, and dinner was catered by an eatery in the same complex. After dinner, tours were conducted throughout both sites. The second offsite meeting was at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. It included a tour of the NTBG Botanical Research Center and McBryde Garden, followed by dinner and a presentation by the CEO. The third offsite meeting will be in April. We will be having lunch prepared by their Culinary Arts Students at the Kauai Community College campus. Chancellor Helen Cox will be the keynote speaker. After lunch we will be touring the Culinary Arts, Nursing and Digital Media Arts Departments. In honor of Vocational Service month, we had 2 guest speakers. One spoke on the 4 Way Test, and the other on his profession as a pharmacist. We also had a weekly vocational minute, where members talk about their own profession. In October, our club honored Fire Capt. David Bukoski with the Humanitarian Award for his work and dedication to community service. Rotary Member Craig Nishimoto, DVM, spoke on his trip to Samoa, where he provided free spay and neuter clinics to dogs and cats last summer. Members volunteer as AVID mentors at Kauai High School. They also participate in Career Day and serve as mentors to help students do mock job interviews. We awarded 3 scholarships for Culinary Arts students at Kauai Community College, 2 Nursing scholarships at KCC, funded and interviewed applicants for HRYF scholarships, funded and interviewed applicants for the Grow Our Own Teachers scholarships with other Kauai Rotary clubs, and funded an AVID scholarship for a Kauai High School student.
