Clavicle fracture treatment

Clavicle fracture is a bone

fracture that takes place on

the clavicle bone or more

commonly known as the

collar bone. Fracture of

clavicle takes place due tofall on to a shoulder or direct trauma to the

clavicle.

Clavicle fracture treatment

  There are generally two

processes done in clavicle

fracture treatment. These

are:-

1.  Non operative

2.  Surgical

In case of non-operative clavicle fracture

treatment involves resting the upper arm of the

affected clavicle and supporting the lower arm

with the aid of a sling. Earlier 8 figure shaped

brace was used but it was found that it was

actually of no help and it also caused patient

discomforts and pains. Now this method is very

rarely practiced. At present clavicle fracture

treatment generally provides with the sling and

some pain killers are given along with anti

inflammatory drugs. The broken area is

constantly put to scan with the aid of X-ray tosee the progress of healing. It has been seen

that 90 % of the clavicle fracture treatments

are done with the non operative method. If the

fracture is at the lateral point i.e. near the end

of the bone then union of the bone is tough as

compared to the fracture in the shaft or themiddle region.

Second method of clavicle

fracture treatment is the

surgical method. Just 10 %

of the cases of the clavicle

fracture are being treated

by this surgical method.

Indications for the surgical interventions are

given below:-

1.  Multiple fracture of the bone2.  Notably foreshortening of the bone that if

untreated my cause forward bending of

the shoulder.

3.  In case of open fracture in which bone is

visible outside the skin.

4.  Involvement of nervous as well as

vascular system.

5.  Non reunion of the broken bone in spite

of following non-operative procedure.

6.  Distil third fractures that commonly

obstructs with the normal activity of

Acriomio Clavicular Joint commonly

called as ACJ.

Discontinuity in the bone surface can clearly be

seen through skin if the clavicle joint is not

being treated with surgical procedure. The

surgical procedures are known as open

reduction internal fixation or ORIF in which a

plate is being used to join the bone correctly.

Surgical clavicle fracture treatment involves the

use of anatomically shaped titanium or steel

plate is fixed along with the superior aspect of

clavicle with some screws. If required in the

later time these plates are removed.

Well there is nothing special done to treat the

broken clavicle until and unless the surgical

aspect is involved. Hence if the bone is aligned

properly and proper supplementation of

calcium and phosphorus is done, there is

nothing in particular is to be done.
