Fracture of Clavicle and Humerus

Clavicle

• Two slender bones of the pectoral gridle that connect the sternum and the scapula.

Can be divided into 3 parts: 1. Medial End (most common

fracture site*)2. Lateral End

3. Shaft

Fractures of the Clavicle

• Group I: Middle third injuries

• Group II: Distal third injuries

• Group III: Medial (proximal) third injuries

Signs and Symptoms

• Pain• Swelling • Decreased pulse• Nerve dysfunction• Palpation of the scapula• Venous stasis• Discoloration

A clavicle fracture combined with an AC or SC joint dislocation is rare.

Humerus

• The long bone (Tubular bone) of the arm or forelimb, extending from the shoulder to the elbow

Distal Humerus Fracture

• The distal humerus is the end of the upper arm bone (the humerus) that forms the upper part of the elbow.

• These types of elbow fractures are fairly uncommon.

Wrist drop

• also known as radial nerve palsy, is a condition where a person cannot extend their wrist and it hangs flaccidly.

• A person with wrist drop would be unable to move from this position to one in which the fingers are pointing up towards the ceiling.

The Carrying Angle

• When the arm is extended, with the palm facing forward or up, the bones of the upper arm (humerus) and forearm (radius and ulna) are not perfectly aligned. The deviation from a straight line occurs in the direction of the thumb, and is referred to as the "carrying angle"

Signs and Symptoms

• Pain in the upper arm.• inability to raise the arm.• Arm will have tendency to flop and bend.• Bleeding into the tissue of the upper arm.• Significant swelling (usually shoulder to hand)

Varus and Valgus Deformity

Varus• Its a condition which

a bone or joint is twist toward the center of the body.

Cubitus Varus• A common cause is

the supracondylar fracture of humerus.

Valgus• Its a condition which a bone

or joint is twist outward from the center of the body.

Cubitus Valgus.• The deformity can also occur

as a complication of fracture of the lateral condyle of the humerus, which may lead to delayed Ulnar nerve palsy.

• Fracture of the humeral shaft are important because they can injure the radial nerve resulting in the inability to extend or bend the wrist or fingers backwards
